    Book Description

The geography of the Canadian economy is undergoing significant change. North-south links encouraged by the North American Free Trade Agreement are loosening east-west ties forged since Confederation. Metropolitian economies have replaced resource-based hinterlands as the centres of dynamic growth, and as the regional economies of traditional geographical units, such as the Praries, have become less homogeneous, policy choices have become more complex. In A Geography of the Canadian Economy, Wallace offers a detailed account of how geography has simultaneously shaped the evolution of Canada's economy and has been shaped by economic forces. It explores these themes along three dimensions. Part I, Context, reviews Canada's external economic relations, globally and particularly within North America. Probing the implications of culture, politics, and regionalism for Canada's economic geography, it assesses the roles played by the natural environment, structural change in industrial systems, and the character of cities in shaping domestic economic opportunities and challenges. Part II, Sectors, presents an overview of Canada's major economic sectors, from the traditional, resource-based ones such as agriculture, forest products, and energy to those built on contemporary expertise in high-technology manufacturing and services. Part III, Regions, explores the distinctive core/periphery economic structure of four major regions: Atlantic Canada, Central Canada, Western Canada, and Northern and Aboriginal Canada. A final chapter takes stock of the forces of continuity and change that make the geography of the Canadian economy a fascinating 'work in progress'.

                  Book Description

Four experienced teachers of beginning Chinese have developed this introductory textbook. A pilot edition has been tested widely in classrooms and refined over a period of years. Among its salient features are lessons that are lively, amusing, and relevant to everyday life: concentrated training of ear and tongue in the sound system of Chinese; extensive grammar notes, clearly presented, with attention to mistakes English-speakers are likely to make; a carefully sequenced character workbook embodying a new and effective approach to the learning of Chinese characters; and audiovisual reinforcement via a complete set of audiotapes and two videotapes, one of which offers entertaining dramatizations of the lesson dialogues.

The Chinese Primer is available in two versions, one using the GR system of romanization, which employs different spellings instead of diacritical marks for different tones, the other using Pinyin romanization. The contents of the four volumes are as follows: (1) Blue Book [Lessons]: Introduction; foundation work on pronunciation; lesson dialogues in romanized Chinese and English; appendices; glossary-index. (2) Red Book [Notes and Exercises]: Vocabularies; grammar notes and culture notes keyed to the lessons; exercises. (3) Yellow Book [ Character Workbook]: workbook. (4) Green Book [Pinyin Character Text]: Texts of the lessons in both traditional and simplified Chinese characters, and a Chinese introduction for teachers.

The first three volumes: Blue Book, Red Book, and Yellow Book are sold as a set (GR Set or Pinyin Set). In addition, the GR Blue Book [Lessons], GR Red Book [Notes and Exercises], and GR Yellow Book [ Character Workbook], along with the Pinyin Green Book [Pinyin Character Text] are sold separately. The GR Audio and video materials are available from the Chinese Linguistics Project at Princeton University for use with this text. These supplementary materials are not published by Princeton University Press. For further information and prices, contact the Chinese Linguistics Project, 231 Palmer Hall, Princeton University, Princeton, N.J. 08544. (609-258-4269).

5 out of 5 stars La aventura de los viajes!.......2007-01-10

                      5 out of 5 stars Bottled Water............2006-11-08

Sometimes literature can vividly evoke an image of a time, place, or city, stirring up the desire to visit and track down distant locations and adventure. Have you ever entertained the idea of taking a prolonged sabbatical from your job or day to day grind to circle the world? The author of Bottled Water does just that and he is able to conceptualize the meaning of journey based on location and situation. Here is something novel to think about. Let us suppose for a moment that we all have the time and ability to travel around the world in search of something but you don't know what that something is. How would you go about doing this, what would you search for, what would you discover about yourself and those around you? During the voyages of bottled water, we witness lost love, unforgettable scenes, and situations that are thought provoking while others perhaps humorous. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Life is Adventure; Live it!.......2006-10-20

Most of us only dare to dream of chucking the 9 to 5 gigs for world travel and more importantly, adventure. What Chris and his two friends find while they are away is more than a vacation but nothing short of life lived to its fullest.
I enjoyed reading the book because it caused me to ache for my lost youth. I realized that the adventure of life is somewhere between what you actually do everyday and what you dream of doing everyday. If you are still stirred by travel to far away lands and the mystery of meeting new people, you will love this thrill ride!

                      5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a book........2006-10-19

Fantastic depiction of the trips all of us take when young and in search of ourselves. The author and his crew were lucky to have such action packed travels to far away places and cultures, traditions and realities. I liked the way each place was presented and how the best features were emphasized. It doesn't sound the trips were well planned so the spontaneity of events keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. I like the open mind of the crew and how they land at places without any prejudice and feel of American superiority. Very often we all see how Americans are very close minded and opinionated when they set foot across the Atlantic or Pacific and how they make fools of themselves when something not related to the Yankees or Lakers is discussed. The World is not flat and it certainly does not look like a Wal-mart parking lot. I liked the author as he escapes from this well familiar stereotype. I certainly hope he has more coming!!!

5 out of 5 stars Laughter, tears, excitement, foreign places.......2006-10-11

Bottled Water is a novel that makes the countries we read about in the news real and vivid to us, and it makes us laugh, cry a little, and pause for thought about the lives of others, whether in Cuba, Israel, Turkey, or the more off-beat location of Bulgaria. Somehow, the main character gets himself adopted by local families in these countries to see and feel how they live, and he and "the brotherhood" (the other multicultural Americans in their mid-twenties he travels with) also manage to get into exotic and exciting adventures from the Full Moon Party in Thailand to meeting a multi-millionaire with body guards up close in Bulgaria. And throughout is woven a thread of love. This book is fresh and entertaining!

The Asian economic crisis began in Thailand and ended a decade of sustained economic boom. This book identifies the role of policy errors involving both the Thai government and the IMF that lead to the crash of the fastest growing economy in the world. Warr addresses the consequences of the crisis, including sharply increased poverty incidence and a backlog of non-performing loans, which clogged the banking system, delaying recovery. This book also explores the political consequences of these events, including the emergence of the populist government of tycoon turned politician Thaksin Shinawatra. Featuring distinguished contributors, including many from Thailand, this survey concludes that Thailand's long-term prospects depend on crucial economic reforms.

                        Key contents includes:

The Social Consequences of the crisis, and alternatives

                          Book Description

Remembering is socially constructed through a range of social activities, ranging from rituals to political events. The social activities presented here are in the context of "crisis of modernity" experiences related to processes such as secularization, integration into the modern nation-state and global economy, and the expansion of the mass media. These processes are linked to the rapid transformation of social and cultural reality, to an increasing sense of insecurity and anxiety in the present and to crises of identity.

The book makes a significant theoretical contribution to the study of social memory. It will be of considerable value to scholars interested in the ways people of Thailand and Laos are responding to the rapid and radical changes brought about by modernity.

5 out of 5 stars East Asian Labor Markets.......2006-01-12

The recent financial crisis in East and South East Asia had sudden and painful consequences for millions of workers and their families. Falling employment and earning opportunities in the formal sector forced them to survive on reduced incomes, informal activities, and meager social assistance. The World Bank and the International Labour Office (ILO) collaborated to explore ways in which they could support the region's governments, employers, and workers in their response to the difficult social and economic situation.

Resulting from the collaboration, this joint study covers the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. It addresses the labor market impacts of the crisis, and identifies needed labor policy reforms for the longer run, particularly in the areas of employment benefits, active labor market programs, support for vulnerable groups, and social dialogue. The book will be a valuable resource not just to policymakers and researchers but to everyone interested in a world where economic crises are a fact of life and where unfamiliar labor market conditions pose a new set of challenges. -- from book's back cover

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A443563. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis investigates the effects of the Thai financial crisis on the Thai military from the fiscal budget allocation aspect. The thesis explores the changes in the expenditure reduction pattern during four years of the recent financial crisis in Thailand. The thesis finds that the budget allocation in Thailand follows the historical expenditure reduction pattern found by Norman L. Hicks. The defense budget bears a high burden from the fiscal budget reduction during the financial crisis as found in the Hicks' study. This budget allocation pattern creates short-term and long-term effects on the Thai military. The short-term effects mainly come from the real term reduction in the defense budget, while the long-term effects draw from the decline in defense budget as a proportion of the GNP and the central government budget, in addition to the decline in the GNP. These effects deteriorate the capability, readiness, and the modernization process of the Thai armed forces. The thesis concludes that the effects of the Thai financial crisis tend to cause the Thai armed forces to restructure their organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Selling to your customers' behavioral style!!.......1998-12-30

This book is great because it offers readers a different way of approaching sales. Instead of looking at how you sell, and what your product is, you look at your customers' behavioral style/personality and adapt your style and approach to fit your customers' needs. This book offers a different approach to the very popular Myers-Briggs personality profiles. I recommend this book for all salespeople!!
