    Book Description

Although most people believe that some form of government is necessary, until recently it was merely an assumption that had never been analyzed from an economic point of view. This changed in the 1970s when economists at the Center for the Study of Public Choice engaged in a systematic exploration of the issue. This stimulating collection, the first book-length treatment on the public choice theory of government, continues and extends the research program begun more than three decades ago.

    Book Description

As late as the 1960s, states could legally punish minorities who either had sex with or married persons outside of their racial groups. In this first comprehensive study of the legal regulation of interracial relationships, Rachel Moran grapples with the consequences of that history, candidly confronting its profound effects on not only conceptions of race and identity, but on ideas about sex, marriage, and family.

"A good introduction to an issue too often overlooked. . . . The writing is clear and accessible, the evidence is evocative, and the ideas are challenging."—Beth Kiyoko Jamieson, Law and Politics Book Review

"U. S. government bodies have tried to regulate interracial intimacy from the day Pocahontas married John Rolfe up through Loving v. Virginia, which found antimiscegentation laws unconstitutional in 1967. . . . The weirder anecdotes from our racial history enliven this study, which is likely to become a classic in its field."—Publishers Weekly

"Moran examines the history of U. S. regulation of cross-racial romance, considering the impact of that regulation on the autonomy of individuals and families as well as on racial identity and equality. . . . She is attuned to the nuances of race in this polyglot nation, and supplies thoughtful analysis of these nuances."—Booklist

3 out of 5 stars an okay read for a controversial topic.......2001-06-13

Moran is a biracial Latina law professor examining the issue of interracial relations in the United States. She starts by suggesting that analyzing race separatism must not end with segregation in schools and housing; we must look at the personal choices of marriage and adoption as well. She gives a history of race-mixing and prohibitions against it, the Loving decision which made such marriages legal in this country, and the modern continuance of most people's choosing same-race coupling. This book was more historical and statistical, rather than legal. Moran does an excellent job of looking at Blacks, Latinos, Asians, and Natives equally. The book is neither as pessimistic as "Jungle Fever" or as optimistic as "Fools Rush In". This book will validate and challenge readers of all racial backgrounds. My only criticism is that the book is disturbingly heterosexist. Moran's refusal to look at interracial relationships among gay men and lesbians borders on homophobia. Otherwise, this was a decent book.

          Book Description

The effects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on globalization, innovation, growth and productivity are immense. ICTs contribute to the globalization of production and capital markets by reducing the cost of information and communication. These technologies have certainly made it easier for multinationals and other companies to spread production facilities all over the world, to co-ordinate international marketing campaigns, and to ease collaboration in projects taking place on different continents. While the anti-globalization movement may claim otherwise, individuals and consumers also have much to gain from the internationalization of trade and commerce. Using the Internet, consumers can today find products on sale in other countries or not available in their own countries, and compare their standard of living to those of others. It is also, as a result of the Internet, much easier for consumers to become better informed. As a result of this increased access to information, markets work more efficiently. Furthermore, globalization has speeded up the diffusion of innovation, bringing new knowledge, products and services to developing countries in months rather than years or decades.

This book deals with the implications of a global economy and the emergence of a society permeated by information and communication technologies. The book includes a special focus on telecommunications markets and policy and on user perspectives. The editors have been careful to select a wide range of papers by expert scholars and policy analysts in order to capture the book issues from a number of perspectives. The book represents a holistic approach, bringing to bear a number of critical perspectives: economics, engineering, business, organization theory, psychology, policy analysis, and security concerns. The volume succeeds in providing a multi-faceted and rich view of the book topic.

                    Description:
Better management of the international migration of highly skilled people may provide a way to expand the global talent pool as well as to allow existing talent to be used more efficiently. After reviewing contemporary scholarship on the knowledge economy and on migration patterns, this paper considers three broad approaches to governance of migration at the global level: sovereignty, treaty, and intergovernmental networks. Each approach has strengths and weaknesses, with respect to the key objectives of facilitating knowledge spillovers from receiving countries to source countries and expanding investment in the development of talent in source countries. The complementarities among the three approaches reveal the promise of a workable international regime in this vital policy area.

                      Description:
Broadband technology has made the world 'flat' so that anyone with a laptop computer can compete in the global economy. Many countries have implemented policies to quickly expand broadband penetration and adoption rates as well as encourage the development of higher-speed services. But the United States is falling behind, primarily due to the U.S. government's failure to implement policies that promote competition in the areas of affordable access and quality of service. The situation in New York City is a microcosm of this problem: most residents have only one or two service providers from which to choose, and many are unable to afford the service. It is recommended that the municipal government of New York City implement policies that facilitate competition in the broadband market so all residents, nonprofit organizations, and businesses have access to affordable broadband and other advanced communications technologies.

                                                Book Description

With the trend to downsizing, many seasoned executives have left the workforce, and with them has gone the knowledge and wisdom gained from years of experience. In this dramatized presentation between mentor and students, a veteran leader takes two young professionals under his wing to show them how to find the inspiration and self-understanding they need to forge strong ties with their customers and build their careers. Addressing 15 key issues, Jack Carew gives powerful force to such truths as "Life is one big sales call. Everybody is selling somebody something. To be successful in selling, your beliefs have to become your cause." Carew's twenty years of training in sales techniques for such clients as Coca-Cola, Georgia-Pacific, Anderson Consulting, and International Paper, give him the background and the expertise to make these truths come alive for any reader in pursuit of success. *Story format recalls the bestselling One-Minute Manager. *Carew is available to speak at sales conferences and meet with heads of major chains and other accounts. *Major special premium sales opportunities to companies with whom Carew is related: Coca- Cola, Anderson Consulting, Deloitte & Touche, and International Paper.

                                                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Sales maybe, business maybe, not life.......2004-10-13

What is a salesperson, really? Isn't it a middleman who serves as the agent for a seller? Rarely, the salesperson will serve as an agent for the customer or buyer.

Thus, there is a basic contradiction in the lives of most salespeople: they are working on their own behalves and for their suppliers or sellers, but the customer necessarily comes third. This is part of the capitalist system and Jack Carew's little pointers are hardly going to change that, no matter that he dresses it up with "spiritual" recommendations.

To get to the spiritual, the salesperson would finally have to give up playing the "getting game" for himself or herself, but when that happens, the game is over. No more "success" in worldly terms, in terms of monetary gain, in terms of quantity of sales, or even "happiness" of the customers.

A new game has started, that of the spiritual paradox (the sound of one hand clapping?): You give up striving to do for yourself, you give up striving to make the sale, you give up striving to gain the monetary reward, and paradoxically, life takes care of itself.

Don't believe it? Try it. Try it, Jack Carew. Quit trying to swing people over to materialism and capitalism by throwing in a few spiritually-oriented words. It won't work. They're in basic opposition. The way of the world is not the way of the spirit. Sorry to be so preachy. Diximus.

1 out of 5 stars "Pay no attention to the little man behind that curtain".......2000-04-16

What a disappointment. A ficticious "after hours" chat with Tim and Jill and "the mentor" who knows all. Lots of beating around the bush, but no berries. Any author who can't be more direct and uses phrases like "inner knower" to describe intuition and instinct isn't worth reading. Spend your $$ on something else.

The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) is the official export credit agency of the United States. Ex-Im Bank's mission is to assist in financing the export of U.S. goods and services to international markets. Ex-Im Bank enables U.S. companies — large and small — to turn export opportunities into real sales that help to maintain and create U.S. jobs and contribute to a stronger national economy. Ex-Im Bank does not compete with private sector lenders but provides export financing products that fill gaps in trade financing. We assume credit and country risks that the private sector is unable or unwilling to accept. We also help to level the playing field for U. S. exporters by matching the financing that other governments provide to their exporters. Ex-Im Bank provides working capital guarantees (pre-export financing); export credit insurance; and loan guarantees and direct loans (buyer financing). No transaction is too large or too small. On average, 85% of our transactions directly benefit U.S. small businesses. With more than 70 years of experience, Ex-Im Bank has supported more than $400 billion of U.S. exports, primarily to developing markets worldwide.

This incredible CD-ROM is packed with over 21,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. I purchased this book over 8 years ago and use it for reference on a continuous basis. The section I use the most is "monthly payment needed to repay a loan". It has tables ranging from 1 year to 40 year loans and interst rates from 5% to 25%. It also gives easy to understand info on obtaining student loans, home mortgage guidelines, second mortage financing, mortgage refinancings, car leasing, consumer credit, point discount tables and load progression charts.
