Well written, exceptionally easy to understand and more importantly not just another vacuous theory book. It is applied modeling, which is what makes the book a very engaging read. One of my top two Kondratiev wave picks.

Always worth trying.......2000-12-14
To understand this brief book requires some impression to the origin of the author, Brazil. Unger comes from a upper-middle class Brazilian family of politicians. In this gigantic and once colonized state, economic and social problems are never too few, especially the great gap between the priviledged and the under- priviledged. Various programs, reformative or revolutionary, hence appear in the political market one after another.
Among the competition, Unger stands on the "left" side if we have to label it. Unlike some stereotypes of "left", Unger proposes in this book his political experimentalism. This idea aims at expelling the superstition of Great Institutions, such as traditional legal systems of property, contract and torts, and typical British or American political frameworks. The proposal points out the problem that "developping countries" naively count on transplantation of those institutions but are unable to see positive outcomes. What's worse, these countries are simply repeating what the west Europe and the United States have undergone in the 19th century.
As a scholar of law, Unger urges the legal analysis to be a medium leading to reflections of more profound social reforms. It should more closely observe the present institutions, and concretely develop new setout. For the readers in "developping countries", where battles of diverse political ideas never stop, Unger's advice can be a valuable option. Whereas for those in "developped countries", Unger offers a perspective other than self-centrism.
Another remark: comparison of Roberto Unger's ideas and those of "New Left" in UK and Germany can be very interesting. We can roughly categorize both of them as "left", but more nuances lie behind.

Instead of writing a sales how-to book, sales guru Todd Duncan has taken a slightly different tack and written a what-not-to-do book. He identifies the 10 most common fatal mistakes salespeople make every day in every business. These oft-overlooked errors in approach and strategy can chase away sales and, in the worst cases, destroy careers. Duncan explains how common blunders such as asking for the sale before establishing a connection ("begging") or failing to ask questions to ascertain your client's needs ("arguing") often kill the sale. If you've read even a few books about sales techniques in the last decade, you are familiar with much of what Duncan preaches. In fact, he has addressed the topic in other ways in his previous books, but his sales advice is solid. We believe it will be helpful to the sales neophyte, and can serve as a handy refresher for experienced salespeople.

This book is as funny as it is true. If you've spent any time selling, you'll find yourself giggling in one moment and slapping yourself on the forehead in the next. Duncan's anecdotes and admonitions ring true and his advice is generally simple to implement. Worth the read.

Good book for entrepreneurs.......2005-09-02
Especially useful because it describes how Direct Marketing is different from other marketing/advertising.
Many marketing books are aimed at large corporate end of town. However this book is great for both large and small businesses. In fact if you are a small business then this book may save you from wasting money on campaigns where you don't sufficient funds to get bang for your buck.
The thing I liked most about the book, other than being easy to read, was that it contained loads of tips and techniques that I could use straight away in my business.
My only criticism is that the book is too orientated toward physical mail campaigns. The book also covers trade-shows and internet-based marketing, although some of the internet-based methods have been somewhat superseded.
Direct Marketing for Dummies.......2001-08-02
The internet section of this book is not at all useful. The techniques are very outdated. For instance, he describes (not in great enough detail to help at all) how to make ad banners. Any marketer with any sense knows that ad banners don't work like they used to. People ignore them, completely. He doesn't give any information about writing copy, or how to approach direct marketing on the internet. He does, however, have lots of "useful" information on how to "get started", none of which is really useful, since it is all common knowledge. If you've never been on the web before and haven't a clue about business or direct marketing, this book is for you. He gives a great introduction to the web. For anyone with even a bit of knowledge, your way ahead of him.
