Book Description

Many organizations are embracing knowledge management as a source of strategic advantage. But already people are asking: "what comes next?" Likewise almost every large organization is heavily involved in e-commerce and turning their organizations into e-businesses. At the moment most e-commerce is focused on selling traditional products and services through the new medium of the Internet. However, the more an organization evolves into an e-business, the more they can exploit knowledge flows between themselves and their marketplace. This book draws together the two strands of knowledge and e-business into the emerging field that this book has called k-business. A k-business is one that turns an organization's knowledge assets into knowledge products and services and uses the Internet to market and deliver them online. Despite its newness, the Delphi Group have forecast that within 5 years person-to-person information e-commerce (a major aspect of k-business) will be a $5 billion business leveraging $50 billion in sales of other products and services.

Capitalizing on Knowledge aims to give professionals and managers early insights into how to develop successful k-businesses. It takes a critical and balanced view of the building blocks of a k-business including knowledge productizing, e-commerce enablers and Internet marketing. It draws on lessons from successes and failures in the dot.com landscape and of the early pioneers of knowledge markets. The writing style engenders interest and readability supported by diagrams, screen images, check lists and frameworks. There are 'points to ponder' to stimulate thinking and decision-making. Five case studies and over 50 illustrative examples provide insights into the application of the book's concepts. No other book brings all the elements of a k-business together in one place to provide a thought provoking yet practical companion for those who want to capitalize on their knowledge.

Demonstrates how the overlap of the two high profile strands of e-business and knowledge management is creating new k-business opportunities
Describes new business models for marketing knowledge over the Internet
Provides practical guidelines for packaging knowledge and participating in knowledge markets.

5 out of 5 stars great reference for entreprenuers.......2002-12-18

Only book that communicates very useful information for people with average knowledge on the subject. I great resource for entreprenuers who need help constructing a business model. Not the useal jargon & recycled themes found in other how to books.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for knowledge entrepreneurs.......2002-09-26

If you offer knowledge products or services on the Internet, or plan to do so, you will find this book invaluable for the thoroughness with which it catalogues and explains developments, alternative approaches, and factors to be taken into account in developing a successful operation.

The first chapter gives an overview of aspects of knowledge management in order to 'frame' the main subject of the book, which is how to realize value from knowledge, using the Internet as the medium to deliver or mediate delivery of the value to customers. The last chapter touches on wider issues including the vexed questions of valuation of knowledge and of ownership of knowledge, but does not go into these in any great depth. The rest of the book is concerned with the practicalities of identifying and exploiting the commercial potential in various forms of knowledge held in 'knowledge objects' or by persons.

The aim of the book is to help practitioners 'to build a thriving knowledge business'. Broadly, it works within well-established conceptual principles. Its value lies in the thoroughness of its identification of the various forms of commercial offering, where they can be applied, their strengths and weaknesses and what a seller of knowledge needs to do to be successful.

At first, the book looks indigestible. I nearly put it aside before recognizing the value contained in its rather dense structure. If you contemplate using the Internet to sell knowledge products, it is well worth persisting. The table of contents and index are good enough for the book to be used as a ready reference.

4 out of 5 stars A practical, comprehensive guide to knowledge management.......2001-06-21

I am not a knowledge manager, however I wanted to get to grips with how I can use knowledge to benefit my department. I found this book practical and easy to read, it is a comprehensive source of insights into the future knowledge business and the opportunities arising. I think this is important outline for anyone who wants to make practical use of knowledge management - without the hype. Buy it!

For most of history, the law permitted men to "chastise" their wives. Common law explicitly recognized a man's right to beat his wife with a stick, as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb (it is from this tradition that we derive the phrase "rule of thumb"). Men who beat their wives were, and are, infrequently punished, or if at all, only leniently. Women who are battered are often blamed for provoking the attack--even by the most trivial of acts or omissions--or for failing to leave, even though they may fear retribution, or other motivations may make flight less obvious a solution than it seems.

In the face of a history that held women to be legally dead upon marriage, subsumed into the identities of their husbands, feminist theorists and lawyers have tried to reconceptualize and relitigate domestic violence. In framing the personal as political, feminists have sought to draw back the curtain that shielded the private realm from the scrutiny and censure of the law. The theoretical and practical challenges, implications, and struggles of this feminist lawmaking--at all its levels--are the subject of Elizabeth Schneider's book Battered Women and Feminist Lawmaking.

The book is organized into four sections, covering the history of the battered women's movement, the theoretical dilemmas of feminist analyses of battering, feminist legal practices and strategies in domestic violence cases, and the possibilities for change through feminist lawmaking, including discussions of the Violence Against Women Act, and of legal education. The issues of domestic violence are fraught and complex, the ways to handle it no less so. Schneider is a law professor at Brooklyn Law School and a longtime legal activist on the issue, and her take is both sobering and enlightening. It is an erudite, well-written examination of law, domestic battery, and the implications for equality, and a highly recommended read for activists, legal actors, academics, and interested lay readers. --J. Riches

      Book Description

As recently as the 1960s the harm of domestic violence was not legally recognized. This book examines how pathbreaking feminist activists and lawyers have brought the severity of domestic violence to public attention since then and led the U. S. Congress, the Supreme Court, and the United Nations to address the problem. Written by a leading expert on violence against women, the book chronicles and assesses this crucial contribution of the women's rights struggle.

Most marketers know that firms spend more on Sales Promotion than on mass media advertising, but text books don't tell you how to manage Sales Promotion. This book is everything it promises: The authors define classes of customers ("loyals", price switchers, etc) and then go through the cost benefit of Promotion techniques from coupons to free samples. If you want to know the difference between a contest and a sweepstake--and more importantly which one is better for your marketing situation--this book is for you. It explains "promotion to the trade" (it's more than free trips to Hawaii). The book is highly readable and attractively laid out. Thoroughly recommended.

I've 2 version of this book, 1982 and 1997. Both of them are very helpful for my work. Schultz tells you not only "what" to do for Sales Promotion but also "why" to do. And that's very important for every business, even dot com. This book also collects many useful examples, if you want to launch a sales promotion next day, week or month, you can find out quickly what you can/should do.

Do you know what CR LN RNST means on your credit report? The "Debtor's Guide" includes a glossary of Codes and credit terms that demystify the debt collection process.

The book is very potent for telling how to get rid of Collection Agencies. I cannot find another book that was very precise and helpful in existance today. Introduces the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and tells how, using this, one can assert their rights. The book also includes some basic coverage for dealing with Credit Reporting Agencies as well (though there are other books more well suited for this)

Just finished reading the "Debotr's Guide." It was quite revealing in showing me I needn't take anymore abuse for those few debt collectors hassling me both at home and at work. I especially found it useful in avoiding taking my credit problems to Consumers Credit Counseling Services. What a Rip-Off! I don't need another creditor addred to my TRW. How I wish I'd read this MUCH SOONER! I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting peace of mind without having to resort to filing bankruptcy!

                        Book Description

The problems recyclers face with wastepaper are connected to the issues addressed by forest advocates, as well as to the difficulties confronted by those involved with industrial pollution from the paper industry. In this richly detailed study, Maureen Smith shows how industrial and environmental analysis can be synthesized to clarify these complex problems and produce solutions.

Smith outlines the basic structural characteristics of the U.S. pulp and paper industry and its relationship to the larger forest products sector, as well as its patterns of domestic and global fiber resource use. She then reviews the core technologies employed in virgin pulp production, with an emphasis on their environmental impacts, the role of technological innovation, and the relationships between fiber choices and pollution prevention. Building on this base she reveals structural barriers within the industry that have impeded positive change and shows how these barriers are reinforced by the traditional isolation of environmental policy domains.

The study includes a comparative analysis of how organochlorine pollution from pulp mills has been addressed in the United States, Europe, and Canada (and why the United States has seen the slowest rate of progress); an assessment of commodity trade patterns in the industry and how they are linked to resource demand; an examination of the momentum building around annual plant fiber use and the diverse interests it reflects; and a review of recent developments in paper recycling within the context of historical trends in fiber utilization.

A case study of the controversial environmental review process of the largest recycled pulp and paper mill ever proposed ties together earlier elements of the book and forms the basis for the conclusions. In closing, Smith argues convincingly against narrowly focused attempts to "fix" the problems associated with the industry, and offers practical guidance on new frameworks and approaches for industrial restructuring. She highlights the need for regional perspectives that integrate environmental, social, and economic objectives.

                            Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for paper industry machines for cutting paper and paperboard and for making bags, boxes, and molding articles in paper pulp, paper, and paperboard across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                                    Book Description

This book examines the U.S. pulp and paper industry between 1900 and 1940, the period when pulp and paper production relocated from the North to the South and the West. This relocation was one of the most influential shifts in industrial production in the 20th century, ranking second in extent of out-migration only to the exit of the cotton textile industry in roughly the same period. This study focuses on the reason for the shift, with an emphasis on the interrelationships among firm location, industrial structure, vertical integration, and firm survival and growth. The work opens with an introductory summary of the economic background of the industry during the period and, then, provides a more detailed description of economic trends in pulp and paper production from 1900 to 1940. Chapter 3 analyzes the relocation of pulp and paper production to the South and the Pacific Coast. Chapter 4 discusses the structure of the industry in light of modern industrial organization theory. The vertical integration of pulp and paper production is covered in chapters 5 and 6, and chapter 7 analyzes mill survival and growth. The final chapter reviews the study's major findings. The book will be of interest to economic historians, industrial economists, and students of economic geography, development economics, and regional economics.
