    Book Description

Challenges to Globalization evaluates the arguments of pro-globalists and anti-globalists regarding issues such as globalization’s relationship to democracy, its impact on the environment and on labor markets and wage levels, and the associated expansion of trade and its effects on prices.

The contributors to this volume present surprising findings that often run counter to the claim that multinational firms primarily seek countries with low-wage labor.

          Book Description

Breaking the Vicious Circle is a tour de force that should be read by everyone who is interested in improving our regulatory processes. Written by a highly respected federal judge, who obviously recognizes the necessity of regulation but perceives its failures and weaknesses as well, it pinpoints the most serious problems and offers a creative solution that would for the first time bring rationality to bear on the vital issue of priorities in our era of limited resources.

                Book Description

I know a lot of intelligent people whose ideas never change and think that determinate regimen is the solution to sweep away poverty. But they never attend the facts in their effort to maintain their beliefs. If you think you are a smart person you must agreed William Blake's quotation "The man who never alters his opinions is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind". No matter what kind of ideas you profess about underdevelopment, this book surely is going to confront a lot of them and will provide you with a wider view. Give it a change to understand why Latin America is so poor.

                  Book Description

Health service delivery is being restructured in many different ways in both the industrialized and developing countries. As the scholars in this volume show, this process is set to accelerate as a result of diverse factors including fiscal pressure, privatization, and the impending renegotiation of the WTO General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). The key policy issues that arise are what are the implications of these changes on access and equity in the healthcare field. The research in this volume, which has been supported by the European Commission, reviews the rapidly changing context in which debates about financing health care and its relationship to globalization and privatization are taking place.

2 out of 5 stars Elementary book. Not really dealing with subliminal methods........2000-01-31

The book should have been called "Persuasion techniques, beyond convention". But never "Subliminal Persuasion". What is so subliminal about using and understanding body language? This book is very elementary. I don't know why I ordered it; I was looking for a book on "real" subliminal techniques and was possibly fooled by the first reviewer's comments. It is a self-help/sales book that lacks depth and doesn't add to the available literature.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Communication and Persuasion In Years.......1999-09-09

This is without a doubt one of the best books (and I've read them all) on communication and persuasion that I have read in years. And although I've made it mandatory reading for every member of my sales force, with outstanding results by the way, the concepts presented by the author can be applied by anyone in social, business, or personal situations with equal results.

Unlike some of the "motivational" books which continue to tout concepts developed 50 years ago, this book actually trashes some of those ideas, shows good reason why they no longer apply to contemporary society, and instead gives bright new approaches backed by scientific study of methods that DO work in just about any persuasion situation.

Most important, the author presents it in such an easy-to-read format that I was glued to it from start to finish. And it wasn't until the end that I realized I had to go back and highlight the information to see just how much substance was really there.

In short, I'd recommend it highly to anyone regardless of their profession or station in life.

                      Book Description

Are the combined human resources at DUFF & PHELPS CREDIT RATING CO. productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on DUFF & PHELPS CREDIT RATING CO., CHICAGO, USA.

                      Book Description

Fashion is a multibillion-dollar international business; it permeates our lives and our economies. Yet there has never been a book of solid, hard-hitting, uncompromising business/cultural/social journalism on this subject--because the fashion press is subsidized by the very industry it covers.

Teri Agins, however, covers the fashion beat for a publication that does not rely upon fashion advertising--and she is thereby uniquely unfettered and able to finally tell the whole truth about this gigantic, flamboyant, and endlessly fascinating business.

Her book traces an arc from the origins of couture and its apotheosis in the early part of this century to the advent of prjt-a-porter postWorld War II and the sweeping changes that have taken place as the century ends. It is an arc from when "fashion" was defined by elite French designers whose clothes could be afforded only by the global socialites--but whose designs were copied and followed by everyone else--to the point where the rules are set by the consumers, and the designers must follow them. It is an arc from class to mass; from art to commodity. Above all, it is the story of the triumph of marketing.

The narrative includes profiles of designers Emmanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, and Zoran, as well as retailers Marshall Field and the Gap.The End of Fashion is classy and stylish, filled with insider details; it is dishy and lively and fun--as well as astute and full of insights about how the changes in the fashion business have reflected changes in the culture over the last fifty years.Fashion is a multibillion-dollar international business; it permeates our lives and our economies. Yet there has never been a book of solid, hard-hitting, uncompromising business/cultural/social journalism on this subject--because the fashion press is subsidized by the very industry it covers.

4 out of 5 stars The download on the Fashion industry!.......2002-01-10

This is an interesting and well written business book about the fashion industry and some of its most important designers. The author describes the growth and changes in the fashion industry and the changing role of the customer and the designers. The books material is mainly focused on the US marketplace and the different stand-offs between ex. Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, the growth of Armani and the Italian designers, and the decline of the French. The main thing is that it nowadays more comes down to great marketing and expensive ad budgets to stay successful, that great design techniques. Overall great insight into an industry mostly concerned on hype and over inflated egos.

                      5 out of 5 stars a real eye opener.......2000-08-15

I love clothes and I consider myself a smart shopper...I don't buy labels and the most famous brand names. I shop for the best prices and clothes that are flattering on me. I follow Vogue and all the magazines, and I thought I knew what was going on. But this book really did open my eyes. The fashion business is really dog-eat-dog and all those big designers don't seem to really understand that real people don't spend $1000 on a dress, or as the author writes in the book, that the consumer is king. No wonder so many fashions don't sell. And those Paris designers, after reading this book I see that they really are not what they appear to be. They are so clueless and overrated. I also finally understood about the stock market and why Donna Karan's DKNY doesn't appeal to women like me anymore. The stories in this book were funny and factual and read really fast. I finished it over a few days. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Great reporting, mediocre analysis.......2000-08-07

The End of Fashion was an enjoyable read, with an amusing view into the belly of the fashion beast, but ultimately it did not tie together the major points it uncovered.

Agins writes about various the various forces that have fundamentally changed fashion -- societal shifts, the changing retail landscape, impatient public markets, licenscing mania and so on. However, it is frustrating that she does not explain how these forces fit together, or extrapolate them into a view of the future of fashion.

We do get good dose of fashion one-liners, such as Zoran's "give diamonds and jewelry to housekeeper", but the aftertaste of mediocre analysis persists.

                      5 out of 5 stars Good perspective........2000-06-22

This book was very well written with an interesting perspective on the changes in society and the effect it has had on the fashion industry. The author has chosen a variety of examples to demonstrate her point on the direction fashion has taken and seems to be headed for the future.

                      5 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-06-14

Interesting, business-view of fashion, that shows the indulgences of vain, shallow designers like Isaac Mizrahi, Donna Karan and Mossimo, whose idiocy was their downfall, and the more business-minded, but nonetheless creative, designers that flourish. Shallow, as only fashion can be, but interesting, too.
