    Book Description

Although general equilibrium theory originated in the late nineteenth century, modern elaboration and development of the theory began only in the 1930s and 1940s. This book focuses on the version of the theory developed in the second half of the twentieth century, referred to by Lionel McKenzie as the classical general equilibrium theory. McKenzie offers detailed and rigorous treatment of the classical model, giving step-by-step proofs of the basic theorems. In many cases he elaborates on the individual steps to give a fuller understanding of the underlying principles. His goal is to provide readers with a true mastery of the methodology so that they can derive new results that will further enrich their thinking about general equilibrium theory. Special attention is given to the McKenzie model, in which it is not assumed that the number of firms is given but rather that technologies or activities are available to any agents who can supply the resources they require. The McKenzie model is used to establish the turnpike theorems of optimal and competitive capital accumulation.

        Book Description

Nucleation is the initial step of every first-order phase transition, and most phase transitions encountered both in everyday life and industrial processes are of the first-order. Using an elegant classical theory based on thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a fully detailed picture of multi-component nucleation. As many of the issues concerning multi-component nucleation theory have been solved during the last 10-15 years, it also thoroughly integrates both fundamental theory with recent advances presented in the literature. Classical Nucleation Theory in Multicomponent Systems serves as a textbook for advanced thermodynamics courses, as well as an important reference for researchers in the field. The main topics covered are: the basic relevant thermodynamics and statistical physics; modelling a molecular cluster as a spherical liquid droplet; predicting the size and composition of the nucleating critical clusters; kinetic models for cluster growth and decay; calculating nucleation rates; and a full derivation and application of nucleation theorems that can be used to extract microscopic cluster properties from nucleation rate measurements. The assumptions and approximations needed to build the classical theory are described in detail, and the reasons why the theory fails in certain cases are explained. Relevant problems are presented at the end of each chapter.

          2 out of 5 stars The basis of Torr's book,that Z=pO,is a mathematical error.......2005-06-09

Torr's goal in this book is to reappraise Keynes's theory of Effective demand .Unfortunately,Torr combines his misbelief that chapter 3 of the General Theory(GT;1936)contains Keynes's important analysis,an error originally committed by Dennis Robertson and Harry Johnson in a 1955 article published in the Economic Journal, with the erroneous claims of Sydney Weintraub and Paul Davidson, who also built their analysis on the same erroneous 1955 Economic Journal paper ,that Z=pO while D=C+I,where Torr claims that Z is Keynes's aggregate supply function and D is Keynes's aggregate demand function .Torr likewise claims, erroneously, that Z is also the aggregate supply curve.Keynes's actual modeling in the GT is contained in chapters 10 and 20-21.Any reader of these chapters ,who can follow simple, straightforward definitions and knows how to differentiate and integrate functions ,will find that Z=wN +P,D=pO,and Y =C+I,where Z is Keynes's expected aggregate supply function,D is Keynes's expected aggregate demand function,Y is Keynes's actual aggregate demand function, and D=Z,a locus of all expected results,is the expected aggregate supply curve.Keynes then gives the major result of the GT on pp.261-262-the marginal propensity to spend, mpc+mpi, must equal 1 or there will be some level of involuntary unemployment in the economy that will be impossible to reduce by labor,in the aggregate, cutting its money wage. The major technical result, derived by Keynes ,not once but twice(once in chapter 20 and once in chapter 21) is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi).Neoclassical theory is a special case of Keynes's GT where mpc+mpi=1.Once this result is obtained, neoclassical theory becomes operational.Given the full employment of resources, rational, optimizing economic agents can choose the particular mixture of consumption and investment goods, from the set of all such mixtures on the boundary of the Production Possibilities Frontier, that will maximize the utility of consumers and maximize the profits of firms-industries.

              Book Description

Together with Marx's Economics and Walras' Economics this book completes a sequence by Professor Morishima on the first generation of scientific economists. The author concentrates on Ricardo's main work, The Principles, and shows that his economics is the prototype of mathematical economics without the symbols and formulae. Morishima then translates Ricardo's economics into mathematical language to find a general equilibrium system concealed within. The analysis contradicts the conventional view that marginalism emerged in opposition to classical economics, showing instead that Ricardian analysis is firmly based on marginalist principles, using prices, wages, and profits rather than labor values. The book ends with a discussion of the historical character of economic theory and an attempt to specify the epoch of Ricardian economics.

                Description:
The paper proposes a general equilibrium model based on the classical assumption that the real wage rate is determined from outside the system of production. In this model, the Walrasian auctioneer in the labor market is replaced by a flexible accumulation rate. Several equilibrium concepts are introduced and studied.

                    Book Description

Why do some people not hesitate to call the police to quiet a barking dog in the middle of the night, while others accept the pain and losses associated with defective products, unsuccesful surgery, and discrimination? Patricia Ewick and Susan Silbey collected accounts of the law from more than four hundred people of diverse backgrounds in order to explore the different ways that people use and experience it. Their fascinating and original study identifies three common narratives of law that are captured in the stories people tell.

One narrative is based on an idea of the law as magisterial and remote. Another views the law as a game with rules that can be manipulated to one's advantage. A third narrative describes the law as an arbitrary power that is actively resisted. Drawing on these extensive case studies, Ewick and Silbey present individual experiences interwoven with an analysis that charts a coherent and compelling theory of legality. A groundbreaking study of law and narrative, The Common Place of Law depicts the institution as it is lived: strange and familiar, imperfect and ordinary, and at the center of daily life.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent, meticulously researched book........2000-03-06

The richness of this book comes from four hundred thirty interviews that support the text. The gist of the book is that people have three takes on the law: before the law, against the law, and with the law.

"Before the law" is an attitude of awe and respect for the institution. Faith in that day in court, that statue of blind justice and the policeman is my friend. "Against the law" is an attitude of resistance to the institution. Law as a caprice of the powerful, and resistance the right way to deal with it. "With the law" is an attitude of game playing with the institution. I didn't make the rules, but me and my lawyer, we sure as hell will play the game. People shift and change among these modes depending on where they are in life, the particulars of the situation, and growing experience with the law.

The biggest contribution of this book is in highlighting the game playing aspect of dealing with law. I think game-playing gets short shrift from other law authors who may be stuck inside their very serious institution. Most other books reduce game-playing to simple economic theory and don't pay enough attention to the human side of gaming with the law. I mean, really. Just look at how big the sports section of the Sunday paper is versus the economic analysis section! Games are a big part of everyday life. Ewick & Silbey give game-playing the appropriate type of attention. Big bravo.

My only criticism is that the language of this book is mainly for an academic audience, and thus I give it only four stars-sorry. The writing could be de-academicized and made more powerful and popular. Overall it is an excellent, meticulously researched book

I got the book for its cover-the picture of chairs in newly shoveled parking space. Now that's a real hotbed of attitude in the informal/formal law divide. Thanks to the authors and worker-bees for all their work.

5 out of 5 stars Common Place Of Law is anything but common.......1999-10-19

The Common Place Of Law is a literate, witty and very well written explanation of how law does and does not work for the people for whom law was created: the common citizen.

Using anecdotal material mixed with sociological theory, Ewing and Silbey have created an intelligent mix of the plebeian and the patrician.

5 out of 5 stars A very, very important book for the study of law today........1998-11-11

This book is accessible to many different audiences and is profound in its content. It would be an excellent book for undergraduate education, legal education or, even for pleasure reading. The anecdotal chapters interspersed with the analysis of the role of law in the lives or ordinary Americans makes this sophisticated book about the sociology of law in contemporary society one that should have staying power in the academy as well as more popular venues. What it has to say about law -- that Americans have a complex and sometimes contradictory relationship with the legal system and its promise of justice -- is not surprising as much as it is affirming and explanatory of so much of what we experience these days in the media and popular culture. The method the authors use to tease their thesis is rigorous and convincing, a model of scholarship for students and professionals. The Common Place of Law is a book to which I will refer and which I will reread for years.

                          Book Description

Korea experiences a traumatic and largely unanticipated economic crisis in 1997-98 from which the country is still recovering. The crisis laid bare numerous structural, economic, and policy weaknesses. The authors chronicle and analyze the key factors behind Korea's economic miracle from 1962-1989 and the causes that contributed to the economic downturn and ensuing crisis of 1997-98. As the country undertakes a series of recovery measures, the authors consider the importance of the ongoing restructuring efforts in the corporate and banking sectors, the development of the 'new economy', and the potential economic advantages to be derived from reunification with the North.

                              Book Description

`Here is a macroeconomic account of consumption based from the start on innovation and growth, by-passing decades of fruitless debate. Davide Gualerzi presents a new theoretical framework, the dynamics of “market creation”, and marshalls evidence for it from the US economy in the 1980s. This is a major contribution to the macroeconomics of structural change.'

                              - Ed Nell, New School for Social Research, New York

`“The end of all production is consumption” said Adam Smith more than two centuries ago. In this book, Davide Gualerzi brushes aside all literature on static consumer preferences and proposes a dynamic, modern re-interpretation of Smith's famous statement. Gualerzi marries a long run extension of Keynes's principle of effective demand with Schumpeter's insights into the driving forces of technological, market and organisational innovations. The resulting model of structural dynamics shows remarkable richness. The author carries out empirical tests for the US economy in the 1980s. This provocative book is good reading and a real challenge for all theorists of economic growth.'

                              - Luigi L. Pasinetti, Catholic University of Milan, Italy

`This is a new approach to the problem of growth in industrial economies. It contributes a fresh perspective on the debates on growth theory by suggesting that the investigation of consumption patterns should be a central feature of the theoretical and empirical analyses of growth processes. The book also presents a view of the transformation in the US economy which started during the 1980s. We find here a systematic effort to examine the period from a theoretical perspective combining disaggregated empirical analysis with an analysis of stylised facts.'

                              - Neri Salvadori, University of Pisa, Italy

The theme of this book is the relationship between consumption and growth in the context of the long run theory of effective demand. Taking Schumpeter's views on economic development as a starting point, the author proposes an original framework for the analysis of consumption patterns as an element of growth in advanced market economies. The book examines the role of demand with respect to the theory of structural change and the theory of consumption at both the micro and macro level. The theoretical framework is employed to analyze the consumption-growth relationship and its implications for the process of structural evolution.

The actual dynamics of consumption are examined in terms of the cycle of expansion in the US economy during the 1980s. The author concludes that there is a distinct shift towards a pattern of `consumption deepening' that explains the consumption fuelled recovery of the 1980s and mirrors a process of `intensive growth' of the market. This interpretation sheds light on the underlying process sustaining US expansion during the 1990s and the questions facing advanced market economies which have begun to experience the emergence of an `Internet Scenario' in terms of development.

In focusing on the relationship between consumption changes and the growth process, this book distinguishes itself from much of the literature on the subject which deals with these two aspects individually. Davide Gualerzi breaks genuinely new ground with his empirical and theoretical research. This book will appeal to economists interested in growth and economic development, scholars in related social sciences, and the wide base of economists and academics sympathetic to new approaches to the problem of economic growth.

                              4 out of 5 stars A Solid Book.......2007-07-08

This book would be on my list of the Top Ten best sales books to own... but it would be in the middle of that list. The author breaks apart the buyers processes into roles and issues and it is helpful.

There is a better book out there titled "Sales is Dead." However, this book would still be an excellent addition to your library and much better than most of the books which have been written on sales process.

5 out of 5 stars The book was great!.......1999-07-06

After 20 years leading sales organizations, both large and small, I thought there was very little new that I could learn about selling. And I was right! What I had been missing until I came across "Getting Into Your Customer's Head" was understanding how customers buy. "Getting Into Your Customer's Head" provides sales representatives with the ability to act like a consultant who is working in the best interest of his/her customers. A tremendous book which can help the entry level sales rep all the way up to the President of the company.
