Book Description

With baby-boomer retirement drawing nearer, Social Security, long a "third rail" in American politics, has become fair game. When President Clinton launched national discussion in April on the future of the program, the loudest voices seemed to belong to those who claimed the system would go "bankrupt" and argued for scrapping it in favor of a privatized plan. Is the nation's premier social insurance program on the brink of collapse?

In this book, two of the nation's most widely respected economists argue that the "Chicken Little" view of Social Security--that future costs doom the current system--is so exaggerated that it is just plain wrong. Certainly, the retirement of the baby boom generation will require some adjustments, but they need be no greater in type or size than adjustments the government has adopted to deal with the overall budget deficit.

The book provides the historical background of the economic circumstances that different generations have faced in this century and shows how changes in Social Security has affected life in America. The authors also analyze the economic assumptions underlying current reform efforts, closely scrutinizing the increasingly popular proposals to privatize Social Security by transforming it from an insurance program to a system of individual retirement accounts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book that informs the reader about the SS debate.......1999-04-03

The authors provided an easy to read text that gives the reader a basic understanding of Social Security - Old Age Insurance. They provided information of all the current initiatives as well as devoting an entire chapter to a critical review of the privatization plan. Excellent suggestions for reforming the current plan are given that make good sense to the reader. A must read for anyone who wants to be informed for the ongoing debate on Social Security.

              Book Description

This book provides a new model of workplace equality based on capabilities theory. This approach identifies actions which organizations can take to evaluate and improve the ways in which they support equality for all their members and also helps ensure that individuals feel they are being treated fairly. Moving on from equal opportunities and diversity management approaches, this innovative book offers a new answer to `what is equality' and provides new insights into how equality in the workplace can be pursued and achieved. Covering both theoretical debates and practical applications, the contributors use examples from organizations such as Honda, BP, the UK Police Service, the Australian Government, RTZ and Coca-Cola to demonstrate real-world practices. To reflect the broad nature of current businesses, the book covers both public and private organizations and discusses the international implications of workplace equality for multinational corporations both globally and locally.

From the supplier: The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld a ruling that school vouchers for private religious education is constitutional. The Jun, 1998 ruling, stated using public funds for religious schools did not violate the state's constitution, the first such ruling in many state-level cases. Opponents feel parents do not control voucher monies, since checks are sent directly to schools, and can be used for any school expense. Newspaper editorials believe if the US Supreme Court upholds the Wisconsin ruling, public school education will be harmed and the separation of church and state will be violated.

From the supplier: Dane County, Wisconsin's Regional Planning Commission will vote on May 22, 1997, on whether to adopt the Vision 2020 land use and transportation plan that has created controversy, criticism, praise and support among residents in Madison, WI and its parent Dane County and in the political councils of the state. The plan hopes to deal with increased population, new employment, transportation and urban development but raises fears of creating a "little Chicago" in an area now listed as one of the best places to live.
