3 out of 5 stars Rehabilitating the Puritans.......2001-01-01

The first reviewer for the work gives an admirable and accurate summary of its main theses, so I will cut to the chase and begin my critique. I am one of the undergraduates who had the good fortune to actually read this book for Innes' course in Colonial American history at U.Va. As such, my opinion of the book may be skewed by the context in which I read it. In the book, Innes makes an admirable effort in making the Puritans understandable to the modern reader. He cogently outlines the foundational ethic of Puritans and how its internal paradoxes fostered constant striving for social justice and economic prosperity. The book is useful in dispelling much of the fairy tale images of early American history that popular culture feeds us. Readers shouldn't fear the word "economic" in the subtitle; the text is dense but not inaccessible. Nevertheless, the book IS an undergraduate level textbook, and it is rather substantial. I recommend it only for the reader with a real passion for the subject matter.

3 out of 5 stars Creating the Commonwealth.......2000-05-05

Innes argues that the economic success of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was due to the Puritans creation of a society in which capitalism, community, and civil society were connected. The Protestant work ethic, which was taught in the household, pulpit, meetinghouse, and assembly, instructed that God provided every man with a calling and it was his duty to work hard at it. This religious-based work ethic coupled with the belief that profit taking was fine as long as the profits were used to help others (the linking of individual and collective well-being) encouraged the development, within the community, of an individual-based capitalism. These two beliefs endorsed "striving" behavior and enterprise which led to the growth of the economy.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for those entering the conversation on these controversial and complex issues.......2007-07-09

Mary Ann Glendon tackles a very difficult task with great care and precision - she attempts to engage in a conversation about two very emotional and complex subjects which usually find people either at polar extremes from one another or completely ambivalent and ignorant of the real discussion at hand - these two issues are abortion and divorce. To embark on this conversation, Glendon suggests that we consider not how America has addressed these issues, but rather how the rest of the Western world has done so through their laws and regulations - and she does so with great precision.

Would you be surprised to discover that the United States has the most liberal laws regarding both the regulation of abortion and the application of divorce in the entire western world?! I was. But Glendon doesn't just stop with the comparison, she seeks to examine how and why this situation exists and it is through her careful examination that one can learn how to better address and speak to these complex and controversial subjects here in America.

The book is not an easy read, but I believe it is an important read for everyone wanting to not merely understand the current situation of abortion and divorce on demand, but also wish to change the present landscape on these issues. Glendon realizes that changing any one law isn't going to change the perception or attitude of an entire country, but she does realize that something must be done and she seeks to better prepare and equip those entering into the fray with solid background information that can be used to advance much needed change in these areas.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding and Vital Contribution to the Subject.......2000-10-10

Professor Glendon of the Harvard Law School is a rare voice of sanity, compassion and honesty in America's abortion debates. She is an especially rare voice within the legal academy. Glendon shows that America's abortion regime, set into place by the Supreme Court in its infamous Roe v. Wade ruling, is the most radical in the Western world. In the United States, the richest nation in the world, we have the least amount of legal protection for unborn children; to use Orwell's phrase, they are "unpersons" as far as our laws are concerned.

But Dr. Glendon's book is about much more than looking at comparative abortion laws. Glendon demonstrates that abortion laws are necessarily related to the provisions a society makes for vulnerable women and families facing difficult pregnancies. Glendon adopts a wholistic, communitarian-based approach to the issue of abortion, arguing that it is more a question of societal responsibilities than individual rights. Thus, the current rhetoric, especially popular on the "pro-choice" side, that posits a conflict of rights between mother and child, is very misguided ... and as we have witnessed, deadly to unborn children and damaging to the fabric of our society.

I believe Dr. Glendon's book represents a prophetic call to a new way of thinking about abortion, and our response to this tremendous national tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Fair-Minded and Comprehensive.......2000-07-18

Mary Ann Glendon is among the most talented members of the faculty of the Harvard Law School, and this book is a detailed comparison of abortion and divorce laws in the major developed nations. Such a comparison leads to the conclusion that American law on these matters is the most extreme in the developed world. Glendon then argues that the peculiar extremity of our legal situation reflects the deficiencies of a constitutional order that places unprecedented importance on rights, a contention which is further developed in her book, Rights Talk. This book is very valuable in dispelling the notion that where we Americans stand with regard to abortion and divorce is simply consistent with the law of other Western nations.

This concise and up-to-date introductory text on British economic policy and performance from 1945 to the present day offers a balanced assessment of the extent to which there was economic underperformance. Book Description

The significance in business and economic history of Japan's startling rise in international competitiveness since the mid-1950s has not only given business academics much food for thought but has also served to increase the amount of English-language writing on modern Japan. Many researchers have sought to dissect the `economic miracle', isolating key factors which range from the national character and `consensus' to the favourable conjunction of market forces, from unique structural elements and government policy to a `free ride' based in American support and free trade. This new book uses a comparative perspective to shed important new light on the components of the miracle. By looking at the key components of international competitiveness in Japan and Britain, new light is shed on the secrets of Japanese growth and refinement of allegations of British `failure'. There are two contributions, one written by a Japanese scholar, the other by a British scholar, on the key variables: the government-industry relationship; management structures; education and training; and finance. The book concludes with new case studies of automobiles and electronics. The essays revise many established notions concerning the two countries. Differences in education/business links, for example, are not as pronounced as is often claimed, and the performance gap in financial services is now much narrower. The book will serve as a starting point for further research on the critical aspects of modern corporate behaviour and international competitiveness.

5 out of 5 stars The impressive power of empircal research.......2000-05-18

Earl J. Hamilton spent a good part of his productive life gathering enormous amounts of data on the evolution of prices, wages and the value of money in Spain form 1350 to 1800. In this volume, the second of Hamilton's "trilogy", he presents his main findings on the critical period between 1500 and 1650, when Spain rose to dominate the world and at the same time laid the foundations of its future decline. Hamilton emphasizes the key role of American precious metals in fueling the Spanish political and military expansion, as well as its effects on prices, wages , geopolitical ambitions and the ultimate demise of the empire on which the sun never set. Carefully constructed series for imports of gold and silver, price indexes for as many as 150 commodities and wages during the whole 150 years period at several locations are the fruit of prime quality research on almost every primary source available. Despite being originally published in 1928, this work still provides excellent raw material for researchers, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Selling Services: Marketing for the Consulting Professional.......2002-05-08

This is the best small book on sales/marketing I have found for the small business person. I'm no sales/marketing pro, so the book gave me "hand rails" to hold onto for my business development work. The book pays for itself several times over.

                      1 out of 5 stars Selling Services.......2002-03-06

This is probably the worst book I've ever read on the topic of selling professional services. Not only is it shallow in its discussion on the client's wants and needs, it provides zero foundation nor proof of success for any of its ridiculous "sales techniques". I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers Key Tactics/Concepts.......2001-12-28

One big account put me in business. To grow beyond, this book seemed to simply & clearly lay out all of the sales/marketing topics that my mind naturally reached out for. I have implemented actions from the book that are paying off in the here and now.

                      2 out of 5 stars A very basic read.......2001-01-30

For those people unfamiliar with basic marketing concepts, this book is fine. Professionals with any marketing experience will find that this book lacks depth or insight. It barely touches on Internet marketing or the valuable tools available on-line. I found this book to be geared mostly towards individuals trying to launch their own consulting firm rather than people in an existing firm looking to augment their business.

5 out of 5 stars A practical book filled with illuminating sales/mtg skills.......1999-10-02

"Selling Services" gave me usable and practical specifics on how to acquire new accounts as well as tactics for maintaining revenue from my existing accounts.

Writing simple but illuminating outline plans, asking proper and timely questions, clues to improve my awareness on what to look out for while cracking an account are things I learned. As well, paying attention to the details of the negotiation process is another skill that this very practical book gave me.

Over the last three decades, debt, bankruptcy, and home foreclosures have risen to epidemic levels. To make matters worse, the personal savings rate is at its lowest point since the Great Depression. Why, in the richest nation on earth, can't Americans hold on to our money? Winner of the prestigious William James Book Award for Believing in Magic and an authority on irrational behavior, Stuart Vyse offers a unique psychological perspective on the financial behavior of the many Americans today who find they cannot make ends meet, illuminating the causes of our wildly self-destructive spending habits. But unlike other authors, he doesn't entirely blame the victim. Bringing together fascinating studies of consumer behavior, he argues that the mountain of debt burying so many of us is the inevitable byproduct of America's turbo-charged economy and, in particular, of social and technological trends that undermine our self-control. Going Broke illuminates everything from the rise of the credit card, to the increase in state lotteries and casino gambling, to the expansion of new shopping opportunities provided by toll-free numbers, home shopping networks, big-box stores, and the Internet, revealing how vast changes in American society over the last 30 years have greatly complicated our relationship with money. Vyse concludes both with personal advice for the individual who wants to achieve greater financial stability and with pointed recommendations for economic and social change that will help promote the financial health of all Americans. Engagingly written, with startling insights into modern consumerism and with poignant human-interest stories of people facing financial failure, Going Broke offers a provocative new perspective on American economic behavior that is likely to stir controversy and serious debate.
