    Book Description

Globalization has altered in significant ways the tools available to regulate international commerce. One result is the emergence of ethics codes, codes of responsible conduct, and best practice codes designed to win adherence to internationally acceptable norms of conduct on the part of corporations and other organizations interacting in the global market place. This volume looks at these developments with particular focus on five topic areas: respect for human rights, treatment of labor, bribery and corruption, environmental protection, and international finance and the control of money laundering. What is significant about these developments is the emerging emphasis on self-regulation as the primary method for raising standards of corporate conduct. The contributors examine the reasons for the emergence of ethical codes and the phenomenon of self-regulation within the context of globalization and look at the role of national governments, international government institutions and other international organizations in shaping and enforcing them. They also study the implications of these developments for corporate governance and the changing roles of national and international institutions in the regulation of international commerce. Authoritative and engaging, Ethics Codes, Corporations and the Challenge of Globalization will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners in the areas of business, economics, political science, labor, and corporate environmentalism.

      Book Description

For nearly 20 years, William Hubbs Rehnquist served as the 16th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. During these two decades, the Court issued major decisions involving federalism, abortion, affirmative action, civil rights, privacy, and the 2000 presidential election. Throughout his tenure, Justice Rehnquist was conventionally perceived as a conservative, partly for the anti-civil rights memos he had written earlier in his career. He became a lightning rod for controversy during his confirmation hearings for Associate Justice in 1972, and again in 1986 when he became Chief Justice. Hudson's balanced, nonpartisan examination of the Rehnquist Court and its personalities shows that, surprisingly, Rehnquist's conservatism is quite mild compared to that of the "ideological purity" of Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, and that Rehnquist did an admirable job of playing moderator as Chief Justice, exhibiting sensitivity toward his colleagues.

                  Book Description

This important book, written by some of the leading scholars in the field, provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in coalition theory and presents both the latest theoretical developments and novel applications in the field of economics.

The authors demonstrate the many uses of coalition theory and its ability to address a whole host of complex economic problems, such as the provision of global public goods, the adoption of co-operative R&D strategies and the emergence of sovereign states. By highlighting important game-theoretic results they are able to compare and contrast the effectiveness of different approaches.

Some of the specific topics addressed include:

                  • advances in the theory of large cooperative games
                  • non cooperative models of coalition formation
                  • a survey of the partition function in the formation of coalitions
                  • farsightedness in coalition formation
                  • coalition stability
                  • coalition formation in industrial economics, trade theory, environmental economics, public finance.

This essential study of recent theories of coalition and group formation will arm the reader with a new set of tools with which to analyze a variety of problematic economic issues. It will prove invaluable to economists, ecologists, and political and social scientists.

                    Description:
In this paper, we analyze the coordination of macroeconomic stabilization policies within the EMU by focusing, in a dynamic set-up, on asymmetries and externalities between EMU countries. We study how coalitions among fiscal and monetary authorities are formed and what are their effects on the stabilization of output and prices. In particular, our attention is directed to study the consequences on these issues of different institutional contexts in which policy-makers may act. To do so, a stylized macroeconomic model of EMU is built and a framework of policy coordination introduced. Numerical simulations illustrate the main workings of the model. It is found that in the case of symmetric shocks, full cooperation is always a likely equilibrium, except for the perfectly symmetric setting. Asymmetric shocks tend to reduce the scope for cooperation. In the case of anti-symmetric shocks the coalition formation is most sensitive to procedural aspects and also to asymmetries in parameters and bargaining weights. Asymmetries in structural parameters, bargaining powers and policy preferences may have a sizable effect on (optimal) policies, coalition formation and adjustments in the monetary union.

                          4 out of 5 stars It Helps.......2001-07-09

This is helpful. This can be useful for those that are new to sales. Some of the information should already be intuitively known by people that have common sense. Tom Hopkins is just as good as many of the other sales masters.

                          1 out of 5 stars Just awful.......2000-04-07

This audio tape was embarrassingly useless. Hot tips like "don't wear too much jewelry", "where to sit at a conference table", and "use a cell phone and fax machine" don't get the listener anywhere close to understanding how to close a sale, how to overcome buyer hesitation, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Sales Tips That Really Work.......1999-06-19

Tom has a very easy approach to selling--one that works. He focuses on the words that make all the difference in a sales presentation and puts forward very clear solutions that can gently push the prospect into buying. I love his non-agressive manner which is so different from the pushy sales types that tend to dominate in the market-place today. Use his principles and it could pay for the cost of this cassette many times over.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Knowledge for Sales Professionals.......1998-12-14

This is a very affordable way to "attend" one of Tom's seminars. This tape runs about an hour and covers all of his principles. Tom is not a self-declared sales guru, spare bedroom consultant, or business philosopher. He has achieved tremendous sales success in the real world. Tom makes just as good a teacher as he does a salesman. You can use Tom's techniques to sell your prospects without them realizing that they're being sold. Tom's the best sales trainer I've come accross. I also recommend Dan Kennedy's paperback "No B.S. Sales Success."

                                    Book Description

The establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995 brought about significant changes in international economic relations between countries. To comply with the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement of the WTO, India introduced product patent protection in pharmaceuticals from January 2005. TRIPS has generated a huge controversy in India and abroad. India has emerged as a major source of low-cost, quality drugs for the entire world and thus plays an important role. While there are a large number of pharmaceutical manufacturers in the world, only a handful of multinationals dominate the industry. By using patent rights, multinational companies prevednted developing countries like India from realizing their potential of industrial growth and drug prices were among the highest in the world. The book analyses: BL the remarkable growth of the Indian pharmaceutical industry since the early 1970s when product patent protection in pharmaceu ticals was abolished BL whether the claimed benefits for developing countries, under TRIPS, have materialized BL what can be done, if as apprehended, the prices of patent protected drugs rise BL whether, and to what extent, developing countries have been able to use the provisions and the flexibilities promised under TRIPS The volume will be of interest not only to academics but also to policymakers, pharma companies, business analysts, students, NGOs, and others interested in the impact of globalization under WTO.

This comprehensive discussion of topics of international trade—from telecommunications, transport, education, and e-commerce to questions of compatibility between obligations towards environmental protection and social concerns in international treaties in the World Trade Organization (WTO)—covers future problems that could arise as India enters into an increasing number of regional trading arrangements. Discussing the importance of these issues to India, this volume suggests the appropriate positions for India to take on issues at future WTO negotiations.

                                                        Book Description

This book is a synthesis of the author's ideas and research concerning the monetary consequences of trade flows, and the relevance of conventional balance of payments adjustment theory. These ideas are considered mainly in the context of developing countries, many of which suffer from deep structural difficulties and severe foreign exchange shortages.

Mainstream economic theory regards the balance of payments to be self-adjusting, meaning that the impact of the balance of payments on the growth and development process is neither considered nor analyzed. In contrast, the author emphasizes the importance of integrating monetary considerations into trade theory and argues that the balance of payments consequences of trade policy need to be carefully addressed. This approach has a number of implications for important issues such as: the sequencing of trade liberalization; the role of the exchange rate in equilibrating the balance of payments; the case for protection; and the way in which the importance of export growth is articulated. Some of the ideas expressed have a long and distinguished ancestry, but they are not part of the mainstream orthodoxy and need airing in a world increasingly divided into rich and poor countries. The author also considers the case for a new international economic order which would better serve the needs of developing countries, particularly by stabilizing primary product prices and controlling speculative capital flows.

Trade and development economists and policymakers concerned with economic growth and development will appreciate the original and illuminating research in this book.
