    Book Description

From the authors of the critically acclaimed Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury comes a collection of closing arguments that spans 250 years and eight landmark trials that have redefined civil rights in America and profoundly affected our society.

Every day millions of Americans enjoy the freedom to decide what they do with their property, their bodies, their speech, and their votes. However, the rights to these freedoms have not always been guaranteed. Our civil rights have been assured by cases that have produced monumental shifts in America's cultural, social, and legal landscape over the past three centuries.

Until now, the closing arguments from these trials have been unavailable to the lay reader -- except in the lasting effects of the decisions that they influenced. But here the authors have collected some of the most pivotal and exciting closing arguments in history -- from the Amistad case, in which John Quincy Adams brought the injustice of slavery to the center stage of American politics, to the Susan B. Anthony decision, which paved the way to success for women's suffrage, to the Larry Flynt trial, in which the porn king became an unlikely champion for freedom of speech.

One instance demonstrates how bad lawyering can make bad law -- the Carrie Buck case, in which the Supreme Court upheld the forced sterilization of women, a decision still on the books today.

Each of the eight chapters presents a case in the context of American society -- then and now -- and includes a brief historical introduction, a biographical sketch of the attorney involved, an analysis of the closing argument, and a summary of the impact of the trial's conclusion on its participants and our country. In clear, jargon-free prose, Michael S Lief and H. Mitchell Caldwell make these pivotal, society-changing cases come to vibrant life for every reader -- fully revealing the trials that have helped resolve America's most complex civil issues and define our lives.

Another brilliant piece...Lief has done it again! A must read for the legal novice or the established professional. Lief has a gift for dissecting the subject cases like the legal Ninja he is. This latest work of legal art engages the reader's interest and won't let go... Should be mandatory reading in all the law schools.

An outstanding review of civil rights cases were people stepped up to represent and provide for the freedoms of others and protected what America is all about. High School, college students, and others can really appreciate our history and from where today's societal norms came.

    5 out of 5 stars Intresting throughout.......2004-09-27

Couldn't put the book down. Every chapter was well written and to the level of the average reader. You don't need to be a lawyer to read and enjoy this book. If you love Law and Order this is the real life stuff. Would recommend to anyone.

      Book Description

Throughout the 1990s, Russian households experienced a dramatic fall in their traditional sources of subsistence: wages and social benefits. Many commentators have argued that households have adopted `survival strategies' that enable them to make ends meet, particularly taking second jobs, growing their own food and calling on the help of family and friends.

This book reviews the available data to analyze the forms, scale and incidence of these phenomena. The author finds that so-called `survival strategies' merely represent a continuation of traditional soviet practices. He demonstrates that they disproportionately benefit the better off and that they do not provide a means by which those who have suffered misfortune can compensate for a fall in their earnings. Instead, he illustrates that most Russian households have adapted simply by cutting expenditure rather than by finding new sources of income. The author concludes by arguing that the notion of a `household survival strategy' is inappropriate for the study of post-soviet society.

Based on the analysis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, Making Ends Meet in Contemporary Russia provides a comprehensive analysis of the means by which Russian households have secured their subsistence in the face of a collapse in wages and employment since the end of the soviet system. It will be required reading for all students, scholars and researchers of transition studies, development studies and human geography.

SalesKills is well named. I purchased it along with a few other sales techniques books, hoping to learn techniques to polish my selling/communicating ability. Instead I read about high pressure, hard line sales techniques, all written in a tone that gave me the impression the author thought little of the client and would be willing to go to any lengths to make a sale.
There is better sales material out there.

Mr. Lux takes the role of a wanna-be salesperson and transforms them into a cutting edge, not to be reckoned with hitter! His tone is brusque but why sugar coat what works? I bought a copy for each of my sales staff and made it mandatory reading. For my new hires it is a required manual for learning sales technique!

        5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2000-02-11

SalesKills is a terrific primer for anyone in sales; and after reading this, I realized...we're all in sales in one form or another.

Without fluff, Steve Lux leads the reader through all the classic and lesser known sales techniques. His writing style is raw, but very digestible, and extremely useful. I'm sure any decent salesman will dramatically increase the deals they close after reading this book. Don't be put off by the skull and cross bones book cover and claims of being not politically correct. This book is powerful stuff made clear with concrete examples.

This text is destined to be a classic. I bought four copies for friends, and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone.

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and export managers whose primary concern is the world market for fresh apples. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for fresh apples for those firms serving the world via exports and foreign direct investment. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, this report begins by summarizing the world exporter's market for fresh apples. The total level of exports on a worldwide basis is based on a model that aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market. These shares lead to a volume of import values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that competitors (countries serving that market) are likely to receive this year. From these figures, world rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritise markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes. Of the 150 countries considered, if a country is not reported here it is therefore estimated to have only a negligible level of trade in fresh apples (i.e. their market shares are close or equal to zero percent). "Fresh Apples" as a category i

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "apples" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "frozen apples and applesauce" for the year 2007. Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for apples across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                                Book Description

As perhaps the world’s most economically dynamic region, the Asia-Pacific is generating increasing attention from academic, business, and policymaking circles alike. At a time when the area is projected to continue its unprecedented economic growth well into the 21st century, it is ironic that the Asia-Pacific regional institutional framework is incommensurate with developments in other parts of the world. The most ambitious attempt at regime creation in this region began in 1989 with the formation of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC). Institutionalizing the Asia-Pacific provides a novel theoretical approach to examine the interplay of economic, political, and security factors in APEC’s evolution. It focuses on the likelihood for APEC to become smoothly "nested" within the World Trade Organization and considers how subregional groupings in the Asia-Pacific might in turn become nested within APEC. The essays draw on the examples of the OECD and the EU to explore APEC’s future prospects for fostering economic liberalization in the Asia-Pacific and across the globe. Institutionalizing the Asia-Pacific offers the first rigorous and systematic theoretical and empirical examination of the APEC forum by a multinational, interdisciplinary group of scholars.
