    Book Description

The terms 'global ' and 'civil society ' have both become part of the contemporary political lexicon. In this important new book, Mary Kaldor argues that this is no coincidence and that the reinvention of civil society has to be understood in the context of globalization. The concept of civil society is no longer confined to the borders of the territorial state. Whether one considers dissidents in repressive regimes, landless labourers in Central America, campaigners against land mines or global debt, or even religious fundamentalists, it is now possible for them to link up with other like-minded groups in different parts of the world and to address demands not just to national governments but to global institutions as well. This has opened up new opportunities for human emancipation, and, in particular, for going beyond war as a way of managing global affairs. But it also entails new risks and insecurities. This is a book about a political idea - an idea that came out of the 1989 revolutions. It is an idea that expresses a real phenomenon, even if the boundaries and shape of the phenomenon are contested and subject to constant redefinition. The study of past debates as well as the actions and arguments of the present is a way of directly influencing the phenomenon, and of contributing to a changing reality, if possible for the better. The task is all the more urgent in the aftermath of September 11.Global Civil Society will be read by students of politics, international relations and sociology, as well as activists, policy-makers, journalists and all those engaged in global public debates

      Book Description

Pound, Roscoe. The Ideal Element in Law. [Calcutta]: University of Calcutta, 1958. xiii, 370 pp. Reprint available 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2002073034. ISBN 1-58477-279-4. Cloth. $90. Roscoe Pound [1870-1964] was the dean Harvard Law School and one of the most important legal scholars of the early twentieth century. This book reprints a series of lectures he delivered at the University of Calcutta in 1948. Pound was deeply critical of contemporary legal interpretation because he believed it had abandoned its commitment to enduring ideals. By relying instead on sociological theories, political ends, or other objectives, legal practice loses its connection to both the rule of law and the idea of law itself. The resulting loss of boundaries, he warned, would enable government to encroach on individual rights. With a table of cases, index and bibliography.

              Book Description

At the heart of China's remarkable economic growth is a new economic system, which has emerged out of radical reforms in virtually all areas of economic activity. Understanding this system is the key to understanding the Chinese economy. This book, the culmination of many years of research in
Hong Kong and China, is a comprehensive account of these systemic reforms, as well as of their transferability to other economies in transition.

              5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-08-16

China is still an enigma to many business people and investors who wonder about the extent to which the country really will participate in a market economy. This book provides a strong, yet concise, review of the history and results of China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy. Author Joseph C. H. Chai covers the Chinese government's reform efforts across several economic sectors, including agricultural, industrial, financial, trade liberalization and foreign direct investment. The chapter on non-state sector business fully rounds out Chai's portrait of the current state of the Chinese economy. We [...] recommend this fascinating book to anyone who wants a scholarly review of the economic issues facing China before, during and after market economy reforms. The better your knowledge of economics, the more useful this book will be to you, but even so, it will intrigue any reader who has more than a passing interest in China.

              5 out of 5 stars A thorough overview of China's economic reform.......1999-03-25

The research of J.C.H. Chai is best described as solid and thorough. He utilizes a sound methodology to consider "what reforms have been conducted" "why reforms were conducted" "were the reforms effective in acheiving their purpose". This balanced approach is a welcome change to the popular style of writing to force one's own personal viewpoint on the success of China's economic reforms. If you are looking for a sound overview of China's economic reform, then this book is for you.

                Book Description

The Chinese Economy in Transition provides an analysis of the economic reforms introduced under Deng Xiaoping. It attempts to answer the question: what was the economic system that the Chinese were trying to reform and what approach have they adopted to reform it?

Whilst the book focuses primarily on economic issues, it also explores the political and social environment and concentrates on three broad areas of the Chinese economy: agriculture, industry and macroeconomic management. Within these broad areas the focus is on two major themes: competition and cooperation, and central authority and regional autonomy.

This book will be of special interest to senior undergraduate and postgraduate economics students, academics and China analysts.

                  Book Description

Much attention has been focused in recent years on the transformation of the economies of Eastern and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union. However, a growing demand for policy advice, technical assistance and expertise is also coming from Asian reforming countries such as China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In addition, business communities abroad are increasingly interested in exploring investment and marketing opportunities in these reforming countries. Such developments are too important to overlook or ignore.

The transformation of socialist economies towards market-based systems entails an unusually wide range of problems. Studies of related topics are complicated by the speed of the changes and the lack of clear historical precedents. Although the structural features of Asian reforming economies are in important ways different from those of the Eastern European economies, all socialist economies share similar fundamental conditions on the eve of economic reform which raise a similar set of reform issues.

This volume brings together a rich collection of expertise and information in an attempt to shed some light on the transitional process in Asia. The contributions are by no means exhaustive. However, they provide the reader and analyst with an excellent starting point to the problems and prospects which are specific to Asian transforming economies.

                        Book Description

Presenting the first integrated view of transition based on a unified analytical framework, this book evaluates the experience of several transition economies.

Fabrizio Coricelli's view of transition emphasizes the connection between peculiar initial conditions and the effects of market reforms. Taking the starting point of underdeveloped markets and market institutions, he evaluates macroeconomic policies in relation to their impact on the development of markets. Coricelli stresses particularly financial markets - the 'missing' market under the system of central planning - and he highlights fundamental trade-offs for economic policy which can play a crucial role in determining the success of reforms.

                              Book Description

This book - the third in the Movements in Entrepreneurship series - examines entrepreneurship as a societal phenomenon. It provides an in-depth study of the social aspects of entrepreneurship, illustrating how entrepreneurship affects society. The need to move beyond economy to disclose entrepreneurship in its societal forms is demonstrated, as is the relevance of our understanding of entrepreneurship as a societal phenomenon.

The contributors show that entrepreneurship is a society-creating force and as such, it evokes new questions for entrepreneurship research and attempts to engage with new theoretical formulations. They begin with discussions on early Schumpeter and a rhetorical analysis of the current academic literature on social entrepreneurship. They go on to present myriad contextual examples of how entrepreneurship can shape social change, and indicate how this is initiated through various social settings, relationships and communities.

Through rich empirical work this book explores the social of `social entrepreneurship' and in doing so shows us how entrepreneurship is at home where society is created. As such, it will prove a fascinating read for academics, researchers and students with an interest in entrepreneurship, sociology and economic sociology.
