Economic globalization--as author Greg Buckman persuasively argues in the first half of this book--has never been an inevitable part of human history. It is eminently reversible and hugely resistible. In the second half of the book Greg Buckman argues there are two broad approaches within the anti-globalization movement. One, perhaps the most influential strand today, he calls the Fair Trade and Back to Bretton Woods school. This argues for immediate reforms of the world's trading system, capital markets, and global institutions. The other, an equally broad church (the Localization school) take a more root and branch critical position and argues for the abolition of these institutions and outright reversal of globalization. Being a long time Alan Kaminsky groupie and self-described landlord, crime buff and NASCAR fan, I found Mr. Kaminsky's book to be both a fantastic and informative journey into the minds of property owners, victims, perverts, freaks, cat burglers and crime scene investigators. I have used the book as a practical and spiritual road map to assist me in the management and securement of my vast holdings. However, as much as the book gives, I feel that its glaring need has become even more apparent in the wake of the new age of terrorism. The book makes no mention of it and it is high time that the third edition, as anticipataed as the latest Harry Potter book, be written. Please Mr. Kaminsky, put pen to paper and give us more!

From the supplier: The trend to allocate fault between negligent defendants and intentional tortfeasors threatens the future of negligent security litigation, a way crime victims have traditionally been compensated. If the intentional tortfeasor must stay on the verdict form, jurors should at least be told that the fault they assign this tortfeasor will make the plaintiff's recovery smaller. Apportionment of fault can be defeated by ways including a challenge of the statute's constitutionality, a determination if joint and several liability still exists, securing every procedural advantage possible and reasoning with the jury members.

Why are some countries without an apparent abundance of natural resources, such as Japan, economic success stories, while other languish in the doldrums of slow growth. In this comprehensive look at North American economic history, Marc Egnal argues that culture and institutions play an integral role in determining economic outcome. He focuses his examination on the eight colonies of the North, five colonies of the South (which together made up the original thirteen states), and French Canada. Using census data, diaries, travelers' accounts, and current scholarship, Egnal systematically explores how institutions (such as slavery in the South and the seigneurial system in French Canada) and cultural arenas (such as religion, literacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and intellectual activity) influenced development. He seeks to answer why three societies with similar standards of living in 1750 became so dissimilar in development. By the mid-nineteenth century, the northern states had surged ahead in growth, and this gap continued to widen into the twentieth century. Egnal argues that culture and institutions allowed this growth in the North, not resources or government policies. Both the South and French Canada stressed hierarchy and social order more than the drive for wealth. Rarely have such parallels been drawn between these two societies.
