Book Description

In Human Well-Being and the Natural Environment, Partha Dasgupta explores ways to measure the quality of life. In developing quality-of-life indices, he pays particular attention to the natural environment, illustrating how it can be incorporated, more generally, into economic reasoning in a seamless manner. Professor Dasgupta puts the theory that he develops to use in extended commentaries on the economics of population, poverty traps, global warming, structural adjustment programmes, and free trade, particularly in relation to poor countries. The result is a treatise that goes beyond quality-of-life measures and offers a comprehensive account of the newly emergent subject of ecological economics. With the publication of this new paperback edition, Professor Dasgupta has taken the opportunity to update and revise his text in a number of ways, including developments to facilitate its current use on a number of gradate courses in environmental and resource economics. The treatment of the welfare economics of imperfect economies has been developed using new findings, and the Appendix has been expanded to include applications of the theory to a number of institutions, and to develop approximate formulae for estimating the value of environmental natural resources.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book!.......2007-01-06

This book is easy to understand. The language is very simple. This book contains the work of Partha Dasgupta and -mainly- Karl Goran Maler during years about several issues, as "genuine investment", "why the NNP is not a good measure to evaluate sustainability?", etc. It is a very good book to understand these issues (and others).

    Book Description

    * One of 14 publications comprising the official UN strategy on how to reduce extreme poverty and achieve the fundamental worldwide human development goals for the coming decade
    * Project directed by Jeffrey D. Sachs, named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine, current Director of The Earth Institute, Columbia University, and Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
    * The essential reference work for all governments, policymakers, aid and donor agencies, development practitioners, researchers, and students worldwide
Achieving human development while overcoming, rather than exacerbating environmental challenges--such as the degradation of land, watersheds and marine fisheries, deforestation, pollution, and climate change--is an immense but central challenge to humanity. "Environment and Human Well-Being" presents principles upon which each country can determine for itself the most appropriate steps to take towards achieving environmental sustainability. The authors integrate cross-cutting strategies, present case studies and propose specific interventions and policy changes required to improve environmental management at the country, regional, and international levels.

    The UN Millennium Development Library
Environment and Human Well-Being, in conjunction with the flagship publication Investing in Development, is one of 13 thematic publications that comprise the UN Millennium Library. This set of reference handbooks charts world progress and presents strategies for dramatically reducing extreme poverty in its many dimensions--income poverty, hunger, disease, exclusion, lack of infrastructure, and shelter--by 2015, while promoting gender equality, education, health, and environmental sustainability. This Library is the official, comprehensive point of reference and action plan for achieving the fundamental development objectives embodied in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the UN and world leaders in 2000.

            Description:
This paper investigates the contributions to life satisfaction of four basic types of capital: human, social, built, and natural. Life satisfaction data were available for respondents from fifty-seven countries from the World Values Survey over the decade of the 1990s. Data on proxies for human, social, built, and natural capital were available for 171 countries, using data from the 1998 United Nations Human Development Report [United Nations Development Programme, 1998. Human Development Report 1998. Oxford University Press, New York.], Freedom House (1999) [Freedom House, 1999. News of the Century: Press Freedom 1999. Freedom House, http://freedomhouse.org/pfs99/pfs99.pdf, September 30, 2003.], and Sutton and Costanza (2002) [Sutton, P., Costanza, R., 2002. Global estimates of market and non-market values derived from nighttime satellite imagery, land cover, and ecosystem service valuation. Ecol. Econ., 41:509-527.]. Regression models show that both the UN Human Development Index (HDI - which includes proxies for both built and human capital) and an index of the value of ecosystem services per km^2 (as a proxy for natural capital) are important factors in explaining life satisfaction at the country level and together can explain 72% of the variation in life satisfaction. We did not find a proxy for social capital that was a significant predictor in the regression models. This was due to the inadequacy of available proxy variables for social capital at the national scale and intercorrelation with other variables. We discuss data limitations and a range of other problems with the existing limited data along with methods to overcome some of these limitations to improve future analyses. We propose a National Well-Being Index (NWI) based on our findings and describe a path to improve it over time.

                        Book Description

In today’s highly competitive selling world, changing old habits has never been more important.

It’s been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again, while expecting different results. Yet, many sales professionals continue to tap into tactics that have been used for many years, anticipating that “this time” they will secure the deal, not because their methods work, but because these methods have become ingrained in their company’s selling culture and processes.

In his new book, Counter-Intuitive Selling: Mastering the Art of the Unexpected, Bill Byron Concevitch reveals a secret to sales success in today’s highly competitive sales world – doing the exact opposite of what your competitors are doing and the exact opposite of what clients expect. Concevitch’s unique approach provides specific action steps and techniques that are designed to help you establish new habits that lead to sales-winning behaviors and results.

In Counter-Intuitive Selling: Mastering the Art of the Unexpected, you will discover:

How to plant the necessary behavioral change triggers inside yourself that will lead to a new level of success. How to integrate counter-intuitive thinking and behavior into whatever sales process, techniques and strategies you and your company practice. How to use the Decision-Maker Rater™ to determine if you are really talking to the right individuals with prospects and clients. What really matters in today’s technology-enabled professional selling environment. How to make yourself a valuable member of your client’s or prospect’s team, even before you make the sale.

No matter what you may have been told in the past, sales is not a numbers game and business is not lost on price. If you are ready to move beyond the predictable results that traditional selling techniques bring, Counter-Intuitive Selling: Mastering the Art of the Unexpected will provide you with a new game plan to increase your success.

As a seasoned sales, sales management and sales training leader who has spent 18+ years helping companies improve sales performance, I've read literally hundreds of books on sales over the years... some absolutely great; many absolutely worthless; most just floating in the mundane middle.

In comparison to most, I found this book refreshing and insightful. Admittedly, maybe it's because, like Concevitch, I've spent time leading both sales teams and training teams, and tend to focus on creating lasting behavior change (it's the only way to tap into the huge potential of the 70% of sales performers in the middle... who are neither the top 20%, nor the bottom 10%). But that is a big focus of the book - so it's had to ignore - and frankly, it's right on target and much needed in most of the sales forces I've observed. If you want to create some lasting, positive change in your sales force, there are some good tips here.

As a training pro, it's also hard to ignore the mnemonic acronyms, like G.U.I.D.O., N.E.R.D., H.E.R.B and H.A.N.K. - all part of the Decision-Maker Rater system. Okay, perhaps they foster a slight wry grin, but in doing that, they also stick in your memory. More importantly, the concepts make sense... a sort of account development primer for how to identify the decision roles within accounts and navigate appropriately.

Those who enjoy the story-telling style made popular by other business authors in recent years will also easily follow the sales rep, Ken, through his journey learning from his sales mentor, Frank. Somewhat subliminally, this also underscores the critical element of coaching and mentoring - also missing elements in some of the sales forces with which I've worked or consulted.

Now, having said all that, you won't find sales training basics here. It's not a treatise on basic selling skills, territory management strategies, or pipeline/opportunity management. If you need those basics, there are other places to learn them. But if you're seeking to break out of the mold, think solidly about account development, and change some behaviors to increase your major-account (maybe "tough" account) selling prowess, you'll pick up some food for thought and actionable ideas here.

                                Book Description

Beginning with a detailed discussion of the World Trade Organisation and the Uruguay Round and its achievements, this book delves into the causal factors behind the failure to launch the new round of multilateral trade negotiations in Seattle in December 1999. Dilip K. Das tries to determine the precise point reached by the global trading system and map out a way forward, exploring the likely items to be included in the agenda for the new round of multilateral trade negotiations and provides contours for a post-Seattle global trading system.
