3 out of 5 stars Good book, but..........2002-05-03

This book is a nice short piece on the nuts and bolts of selling, but be forewarned: it has about as much to do with Microsoft and its methods as I do (hey, I'm running Office 2000 on my computer, woohoo!).

You get the occassional gem about taking Bill Gates along on a sales call. That's what you call a closer. But that's about it. Other than that, Dayton could be describing how to sell cardboard. Not that it's a bad thing. But if you're looking for strategic selling techniques for high technology sales, best look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars A great tech sales roadmap.......2000-04-19

As opposed to most "hot new" sales approaches which focus on changing your personal style, this book does a great job of providing a strategic step-by-step plan from A-Z. It's void of fluff and gets right to the point of outlining the nuts and bolts of the process including pre-sales planning, performance tracking, maintaining growth, and time management. It's worth reading in general and especially for those migrating into tech sales.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on selling high technology products.......1999-04-27

This book is one of the best books on selling high technology products on the market. It provides invaluable knowledge on a full range of selling topics including effective time management, marketing, sales support, sales people, sales managers, and customer support. The section on time management was very helpful. When I first started reading it I was wondering why the author took the time to insert a chapter on time management when there are so many books devoted to the subject. Before I realized it I was saying to my self, "... this is happening to me every day I must take control of my schedule." The Client Centered approach to sales is the central focus of the book and is described in detail. Some of the methods presented in the Client Centered approach have been presented in other books, but the author did an excellent job of bringing together the various ideas into a well-defined plan. The forms and checklists included are a valuable addition, and help in transforming the ideas presented into a plan of action. I was so impressed with the book that I am purchasing copies for all my sales and marketing people.

              Book Description

This book, by an independent journalist and academic, shows how US oil policy has repeatedly been linked to gross violations of human rights by US-supported militaries and has bolstered the perception of the US as a rogue nation. Its involvement in Colombia, Indonesia and Iraq has been at least partially driven by the desire to secure access to oil. The Bush administration has made it a priority to consolidate US hegemony over Middle Eastern oil while securing access to alternate sources. Washington has implemented regime change in Iraq and escalated its military role in Colombia's civil conflict. It has also increased its military presence and political and economic influence in the oil rich regions of Central Asia and West Africa. These areas, already rife with socio-economic inequalities and human rights abuses, are likely to be the settings for new oil wars in the years ahead. The strategic use of the war on terror to protect oil interests raises important new questions about the dangers posed by US foreign policy.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful study of the effects of some US interventions.......2006-11-28

In this useful book, journalist and lecturer Garry Leech shows how oil, not concern for promoting democracy, drives the US to intervene in countries across the world. He looks at the damaging effects of US interventions in the Middle East, Central Asia, West Africa and Latin America.

The US-British invasion of Iraq has brought disaster to the people, but a bonanza for US companies. It gave US and British oil companies access to Iraq's oil reserves. The US government controls the Development Fund for Iraq, where, by UN mandate, Iraq's oil revenues are deposited for the Iraqi people's benefit. The Coalition Provisional Authority claimed that most of the Fund paid for contracts to Iraqi companies, but 85% of the $2.2 billion went to US companies, mostly to Kellogg, Brown & Root, a subsidiary of Dick Cheney's Halliburton.

The 1999 Silk Road Strategy Act spelt out long-term US policy, "It shall be the policy of the United States in the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia ... to help promote market-oriented principles and practices ... to support United States business interests and investments in the region." The effects have been dire: in Kazakhstan, for example, since its counter-revolution, wages have been cut by more than 50%, poverty and corruption have soared and health care has worsened. In Azerbaijan, 68% of the population now live in absolute poverty.

The US has exercised influence in West Africa through the World Bank. So in oil-rich Nigeria, 66% of the population live in absolute poverty, up from 43% in 1986. In Angola, 82% live in poverty.

In Colombia, the number of poor rose from 60% in 1995 to 64% in 2000. The state is warring on the people: the USA backs it as part of the `war on terror', although no US citizens have been killed in Colombia.

In Venezuela, by contrast, life for the people is improving as the nation reclaims its resources and defends its sovereign independence. The government funds free medical care, subsidises food, enrols ever more children in schools, and distributes land. 20,000 Cuban doctors and health educators are helping to improve people's health. Hugo Chavez won 57% of the votes in the 1998 presidential election. In 1999, 70% of voters approved the new Constitution, which allowed the recall of all elected officials, including the President, and increased democratic participation in decision-making. Chavez won 59% of the votes in the 2004 referendum.

                Book Description

Have neo-liberal reforms succeeded? To what extent the promises of less-restricted business operations were fulfilled? Although the ideology of neo-liberalism was extensively diffused, as well as the movement toward deregulation, the outcomes are puzzling.

As the papers in this issue of The Annals suggest, the current economic order is anything but free of regulation. Indeed, many policy changes seem to have expanded and extended regulation – in a global sense. The international arena is increasingly legalized, and new layer of regulatory controls is being created at still another level of policymaking as regulatory solutions adopted in North America and Europe have spread across continents.

Instead of accepting the position of a neo-liberal hegemony, this volume of the annals examines the complex relationship between markets, regulation, private property, and public institutions and closely studies the reasons for policy changes in the environment of regulatory capitalism.

Going beyond the national case based approach, the authors in this issue take diffusion approaches, which hold a combination of horizontal, international and domestic explanations that will give readers a new understanding of how the global move to regulatory capitalism occurred and what the sources of its success are.

Divided into three major parts, this issue includes articles covering globalization and diffusion in the following areas of analysis:

Taken together, these topics create a comprehensive image of the many dimensions of the world-wide regulatory capitalism and a clearer understanding of its emerging characteristics. Scholars and policymakers in political science, sociology, and economics will find this an invaluable resource in understanding the enormous impact that increased regulation has had on the global social and economic fabric.

                      Book Description

In the years since World War II, the United States and other countries have created a new economic order which has produced one of the broadest and most sustained periods of prosperity in world history. The essence of this new economic order is a system of rules to govern, facilitate, and promote trade in goods and services. The result is applauded by some and condemned by others. This study discusses the roles of money, systems, and growth in the emerging, new economic order. Studying the roles of money, systems, and growth are important for gaining insight into the likely behavior of economies such as China's. A nation as large as China could undermine the ability of other countries to impose politically difficult economic disciplines. There is need for caution. The upheaval in Asia that is affecting the world's largest markets is a case in point. Failure to implement reforms consistent with the rules of the new economic order has pushed such countries as Albania, Romania, and Macedonia close to becoming Europe's hidden Third World. The power of monetary policy and economic growth to either facilitate or hinder a country's readiness to adopt the rules of the new economic order is underscored in this study.

                              Book Description

Globalization presents a paradox in light of the tendency toward regionalization in world trade and investment, and the emergence of the three economic super blocs--the Asia-Pacific Rim, North America, and the European Economic Community. The Third World countries and regions in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere are left out of the action. This work states the fundamental problems that face Africa, draws the attention of the world policy makers to the problems, and proposes answers and solutions.

                              Book Description

'Globalization' is a term which dominates much political discussion at the start of the 21st century and is accepted by many as an inevitable process. However, as recent protests in the United States and elsewhere have demonstrated, there is considerable popular opposition to the much vaunted 'New World Order.' This book examines the key debates about globalization and provides a detailed and incisive analysis of the varied and often contradictory opposition to globablization within the United States.

So your interested in globalization? Well, this book takes a look at it through the lenses of the American far-left (Cavanagh, Wallach)AND the far-right (Buchanan, Perot).

How do these ideologies merge? Well, they don't, but the book does examine how they arise from American ideologies of yesteryear. And that is really the book's strong point. How are American cultural beliefs exceptionalism, Fordism, Keynesianism, nationalism, racism, and conservatism coping with the "New World Order."
