Like a Coca-Cola bottle and a McDonald's arch, Kodak's yellow packaging has become a 20-century business icon. As the company prepares for the 21st century, however, all is not going smoothly. In much the way she chronicled the changing times at Proctor & Gamble in her previous book, Soap Opera: The Inside Story of Proctor & Gamble business editor Alecia Swasy now examines the film company's struggles in Changing Focus: Kodak and the Battle to Save a Great American Company.

    Book Description

Changing Focus recounts Kodak's roller-coaster history, including a string of failed product launches, management blunders, and ill-conceived attempts to diversify. Readers see today's Kodak struggling to revitalize itself, beginning with a portrait of CEO George Fisher, who has been charged with the daunting task of remaking one of the world's largest companies. 1 out of 5 stars Missed The Drama.......1997-07-26

Changing Focus could have been a compelling and dramatic story about the challenges still facing the Eastman Kodak Company. Sadly, it lacked focus, and more importantly, it was weak on drama.

Fiction or non-fiction, the story needs to be a 'page turner.' For example, the author glossed over the aborted attempt to move marketing headquarters from Rochester to D.C. The dramatic moment was a semi, drapped with a protest message by local merchants, parked in front of Kodak Headquarters during a board of directors meeting. The board freaked and the move was over in a Kodak moment. The author destroys CEO Kay Whitmore's financial judgement, but omitted an infamous memo by Jack Thomas, Whitmore's president, to all employees to reduce everything from postage stamps to toilet paper to achieve fourth quarter earnings. Wall Street howled and the stock went down with the stamps.

Without the real drama, Ms. Swasy dabbles in a variety of mundane opinions by employeees, insiders and the community. The Class of '93, a group of layoff victims, revisited often in the book, was not generally a sympathetic group. This is especially true of the Coutures, a yuppie couple impacted by layoffs, who sang, 'The world owes me a living,' throughout the book.

Swasy's biggest challenge is that the Kodak story is far from being complete. The battle with Fuji, the shift to digital, and the change in culture may one day yield a dramatic business case and drama. 'Changing Focus' is a blurred attempt, which falls short.

        Book Description

Energy and Transport analyzes the history of energy use and regulation from the nineteenth century through to the present, as represented by broad policy and consumption in the individual household. The relationship between energy and the evolution of energy policies, and the relationship between fuels and environmental pollution are historically reviewed. Thus these thirteen essays shed much historical light on current energy debates and root out persistent myths about energy use.

'...this volume is in many respects a pioneering effort. One hopes it will stimulate further research into the wide range of questions it addresses.' -- Science, 17th June 1983

'The editors of this book have succeeded in gathering 13 papers that provide excellent historical perspectives on energy policy issues...The readings in this book are a must for students taking courses on energy policy.' -- Science Books and Films, Vol 19 No 1, Sept/Oct 1983

          Book Description

Technology and U.S. global competitiveness is a major concern today, and yet there is no study that surveys the key issues describing federal and state policies in the United States. What new technologies are likely to increase our national productivity and international competitiveness in the future? Editors Lambright and Rahm have gathered together a group of experts to provide varying perspectives and recommendations for students, scholars, experts, and policymakers to consider. The edited collection describes federal and state programs, institutions, and changing policy issues given the new world order of technology and competitiveness. Part I analyzes federal competitiveness policy, the decontrolling of technology transfer, the role of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the emerging role of the Department of Defense in Technology Transfer. Part II covers turbulent state programs in the 1990s, state space technology programs, and basic research and development. Part III deals with recent theoretical and organizational approaches to U.S. technology policy, changing international relations and U.S.-Japanese competitiveness, and corporate culture in small high tech firms.

NEPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, SHPOs, THPOs, CEQ, EIS, SIA, Section 106, the National Register, Executive Order 11593. The federal laws, regulations, protocols, and agencies associated with the identification and protection of American cultural resources can be bewildering to the outsider. Thomas F. King, who has been actively involved in cultural resources management practice for almost three decades, demystifies this web of regulation, providing frank, practical advice on how to ensure regulatory compliance in dealing with archaeological sites, historic buildings, urban districts, sacred sites and objects, shipwrecks, and archives. In this brief, informally written guide, he discusses the various federal laws that govern the protection of resources, how they have been interpreted, how they operate in practice, and even how they sometimes contradict each other. The author also provides helpful guidance to the wide array of federal, state, and tribal offices that are concerned with cultural resources management and the special challenges of working with each. King's insider's guide is an essential tool for CRM work by archaeologists, historic preservationists, environmentalists, tribal governments, agency managers, and students. Sponsored by the Heritage Resource Management Program, University of Nevada, Reno

5 out of 5 stars I was dreading this book..........2003-07-12

I was dreading this book. It was required for a class in CRM law, but I have now decided that it is an essential reference that will always be found on a handy shelf in my office.

King is recognized as a leader in the field of federal cultural resource management and has written a comprehensive, digestible overview of the history of the subject and the laws that govern archaeology on federally-funded projects. The chapters are informative, yet to the point, opinionated, and, dare I say, actually funny! King gives bibliographic references to most case studies, in case you'd like to chase down the details behind a certain cultural resource management decision, but it is also the perfect, readable beginner's guide to the history and development of CRM law.

The one critique I have is that it may be time to do an update of the book to reflect the ways that CRM law has changed since 1998. However, the fundamental concepts and laws are still the same, and the book remains the best on the subject. Today, I'm buying his newest book "Thinking About Cultural Resource Management: Essays from the Edge" (2002) to see what else King has to say. I will definitely seek out other books by the author.

                        Book Description

Every salesperson must ``make the sale''--but chatting, networking, even listening to a customer's ``needs'' will only get them so far. What really spells success in sales is the salesperson's ability to determine the customer's true ``wants''--and appeal to those wants directly. Armed with feedback from hundreds of decision-makers, buyers, and end-users at various corporations, authors Brooks and Travisano show how customers almost always make a partly emotional buying decision and demonstrate how to: identify the ``hidden buying motivation'' defined by a customer's wants; use words, phrases, and techniques that work most effectively to uncover customers wants; create a perception in the customer's mind that is favorable--instead of relying on facts and stats.

If you think that there is such a thing as the "science" of sales, this is the book you need. Easy to understand and apply to whatever product or service you sell. It helped me change the way I approach new clients and service existing clients. Worth the money and more...

4 out of 5 stars Easy Read with Great Information.......2000-03-30

This book really gets to the core of successful selling. It emphawsizes identifying and understanding the decsion makers wants which are personal, emotional, and under the surface. Too many sales people focus on the surface stuff especially customers needs. What we really should do is tie in want based selling into our successful needs based approache we are curretnly using.

This book is a very easy read. Key points are emphasized and repeated several times to make sure they sink in. The charts and exercises used really help you grasp the concepts.

The only downside is the first helf of the book tends to be very repetitive and you wonder are they having going to get to some other points. However the second half of the book is fantastic! It really gives you excellent ideas and techniques for identifying decsion makers wants and applying the concepts to your customrs.

                        Enjoy and Good Selling!
