        Book Description

Until recently, many Japanese believed that they lived in the richest country in the world, and in the early 1990s, they welcomed the end of one-party dominance. However, by the middle of the 1990s, many Japanese are no longer confident in their economy, nor optimistic in their politics. This authoritative study analyses various aspects of Japanese society and economy in order to provide a balanced view between the optimism of the 1980s and the pessimism characteristic of more recent years. The Political Economy of Japanese Society is a revision and translation of a multidisciplinary research project carried out by the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo. Beginning with the late nineteenth century, it examines the historical developments of Japan's contemporary political economy, paying particular attention to the changes that have occurred 'from below'. Social actors who have often been given peripheral treatment, such as opposition parties, the aged, female and foreign workers, are brought to the forefront of the analysis, alongside those considered more mainstream, such as the governing party, large corporations and labour unions. The Japanese political economy of the 1980s and 90s has had a strong impact on the global economy, and this book also analyses selective influences on the outside world, in particular on other Asian nations and the USA. Volume 1 analyses the structures of the Japanese political economy which encouraged continuous economic growth in the period from 1955 to 1990, focusing on such phenomena as Japanese political management, the Japanese employment system, and one-party dominance in politics. Volume 2 examines some of the problems inherited from this period of dramatic economic growth.

            Book Description

The Chinese Economy in Transition provides an analysis of the economic reforms introduced under Deng Xiaoping. It attempts to answer the question: what was the economic system that the Chinese were trying to reform and what approach have they adopted to reform it?

Whilst the book focuses primarily on economic issues, it also explores the political and social environment and concentrates on three broad areas of the Chinese economy: agriculture, industry and macroeconomic management. Within these broad areas the focus is on two major themes: competition and cooperation, and central authority and regional autonomy.

This book will be of special interest to senior undergraduate and postgraduate economics students, academics and China analysts.

              Book Description

: Written by Barry Farber, one of the country's best known, most respected and incredibly successful sales gurus (Entrepreneur magazine), 12 CLICHES OF SELLING AND WHY THEY WORK is steeped in the language and knowledge of what it takes to sell. It uses one clich, per chapter as a starting point-and mines its truth and powerful wisdom.

Never take no for an answer, for example, belies the image of the stereotypical make-the-sale-at-any-cost salesperson and focuses on finding ways to get around obstacles, such as making the gatekeeper your ally and using humor to open closed doors. You never get a second chance to make a first impression shows how to sell yourself first, how to make people like, trust, and respect you, and how and why to make eye contact and keep a questioning attitude. Your attitude determines your altitude describes how to build and maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of rejection. Don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle gives the 12 steps to a solid presentation. The art of networking and mentoring is covered in It's not what you know, it's who you know, while the importance of value, including the value of getting your money's worth-and all that it implies-falls under You get what you pay for. It's the book for everyone who sells-and, as Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote, Everyone lives by selling something.

4 out of 5 stars quick read, back to basics sales philosophy.......2004-11-29

This book is simple and to the point. Farber doesn't try to teach you any new "system." These are the basics and the reason I keep this book handy for quick inspiration - to remind me that sales is not that complex.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense selling with uncommon techniques.......2004-07-17

I saw this book at the bookstore and normally I don't buy books on impulse. But I'm glad I bought this one. Farber discusses the 12 universally known cliches that apply to business but are equally applicable to life in general. He gives reasons why these things are common knowledge and why they work. Then he gives great examples of sales professionals who succeeded by applying the principle (the cliche) Farber just discussed.

Not only do these principles work in business, but they are also applicable to everyday living, especially the last one that Farber discusses. My teenage daughter is always asking me to recommend books that she can read to teach her to prepare for college and beyond. This is one of the books I'm recommending for her, along with Masters of Success and The Mental Edge (mainly for sports but applicable in other areas of life), and How to Succeed in Business By Breaking All the Rules.

We have heard of all of these cliches, but it's great to have them reiterated in an engaging, entertaining, and educational manner as Farber did. Definitely should be a part of every sales professional's library.

From the supplier: Changes in the Federal Reserve System's reserve requirement structure are often complex; consequently judging in the net effect on reserve requirements is difficult. One measure of aggregate reserve requirement policy effects, the reserve adjustment magnitude, is calculated by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. This measure is used to review monetary policy actions taken with respect to reserve requirements over the period 1959-88. Particular attention is devoted to the complex changes in the reserve requirement structure initiated under the Monetary Control Act of 1980. The potential consequences that changes in reserve requirement ratios have on debt monetization is also considered. (Printed by permission of the publisher.)

                      Book Description

Donald Kirk explores the reasons for Korea’s economic crisis, its aftermath, and its impact on the system that brought it about. He traces a variety of events that constituted the crisis, including a series of scandals at the height of the Korean miracle; the efforts of the one-time dissident Kim Dae Jung as president to curb the overweening power of the chaebol, or conglomerates; and the outside intervention by the IMF and the country’s desperate efforts to obtain foreign investment. At the same time, the book explores another overwhelming problem, that of coming to terms with North Korea, which is suffering from famine but still a threat. Based almost exclusively on the author’s original reporting from the onset of the crisis through the intervention of the IMF, this book is the first to look at Korea’s experience of the regional turmoil in Asia.

4 out of 5 stars Telling it Like it Was.......2005-08-02

Don Kirk is the grand old man of the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' club; he is a first-class writer and quite a character in person. Now with CBS News, this book distills Don's extensive reporting of what Koreans still call "The IMF Crisis." As such, it is a valuable resource - full of names, dates and places - as reported from the scene, on the ground, at the time. It is also a compelling story of an era when it looked as if the miracle really was about to unravel. Clearly, that did not happen, but many at the time thought it would, and this book captures the atmosphere. Not as analytical as Clifford's "Troubled Tiger" but still, an eminently readable account of an era that - given the rapid pace of change in Korea - is fast receding into history.

4 out of 5 stars A Journalistic Account of the Korean Financial Crisis.......2001-06-09

Don Kirk is a newspaper reporter for the International Herald Tribune based in Seoul. He had previously written a book on Hyundai. This book is a journalistic account of the financial crisis that swept South Korea in 1997-98. Its strong points are lots of vivid quotes and anecdotes. Its weakness is a lack of overall analytical framework. In essence, it updates Mark Clifford's "Troubled Tiger" to the late 1990s. Readers interested in a more systematic analysis of the crisis should see Marcus Noland "Avoiding the Apocalypse."

                      5 out of 5 stars Korean Crisis.......2000-10-25

I am working in country risk assessment section in the Bank. I have been in charge of South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. We always get in contact with IMF staff and collabolate the task for international coordination. To this end, I put a great deal emphasis on that this book must be resourceful for my job!
