      Book Description

Written by well-informed thinkers in leading NGOs, this book seeks to add to the pressure on the World Bank to shift policy in favor of sustainable energy. Explaining the historical development of the bank's energy policies, the book outlines promising initiatives within the bank and explains why these are having little impact on mainstream energy lending. The bank's energy policies have actually led to an increase in fossil fuel power plants in the ten lowest income countries. While not engaging in an ideological attack on privatization, the authors are concerned with how the Bank has allowed regulatory processes to be hi-jacked by vested interests.

This concise, affordable volume accomplishes two major goals. First, it provides an informative overview of the U.S. juvenile justice system, outlining the processes by which the system deals with a wide range of illegal activities. Second, the authors discuss the critical issues currently facing policymakers and practitioners, summarizing published research on juvenile issues and the impact of programs targeted toward juveniles.

No matter what country people live in, they all dislike high taxes and inflation, because they recognize the hardships they impose on their lives and families. By nature, we are a compassionate people. We don't like to see other people suffer, especially starving children. The September 11 disaster has proved beyond doubt that the American people can and do respond to crises with compassion and generosity, even heroism. When we hear that worldwide, 24,000 people die of hunger every day, we know this is a crisis. We care and we'd like to help. But what can we do? When most stocks were rising faster than flames on a pine tree during a forest fire, investors in the stock market felt prosperous even wealthy. They didn't think what would happen when the stock market crashed the way it's doing now. They couldn't visualize how that would devastate the whole economy and that greed was destroying the market itself.

I have read the "World Held Hostage By Debt" and
was left feeling outrage and the need to take action
                  to do something about it.

I have read about of all these topics before and
knew what you were writing about, but many
Americans have not and need to be told. But even I
who already knew the truth about our money system
was moved to action as by no other book I've ever
                  read on the subject.

Your book is so well researched and based on fact
rather than emotion that it is absolutely convincing
where other books can be easily dismissed by the
skeptical. This is why we must bring it to the reading
public. There are lives at stake.....

                  Book Description

New European Cinema offers a compelling response to the changing cultural shapes of Europe, charting political, aesthetic, and historical developments through innovative readings of some of the most popular and influential European films of the 1990s. Made around the time of the revolutions of 1989 but set in post-World War II Europe, these films grapple with the reunification of Germany, the disintegration of the Balkans, and a growing sense of historical loss and disenchantment felt across the continent. They represent a period in which national borders became blurred and the events of the mid-twentieth-century began to be reinterpreted from a multinational European perspective.

Featuring in-depth case studies of films from Italy, Germany, eastern Europe, and Scandinavia, Rosalind Galt reassesses the role that nostalgia, melodrama, and spectacle play in staging history. She analyzes Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso, Michael Radford's Il Postino, Gabriele Salvatores's Mediterraneo, Emir Kusturica's Underground, and Lars von Trier's Zentropa, and contrasts them with films of the immediate postwar era, including the neorealist films of Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, socialist realist cinema in Yugoslavia, Billy Wilder's A Foreign Affair, and Carol Reed's The Third Man. Going beyond the conventional focus on national cinemas and heritage, Galt's transnational approach provides an account of how post-Berlin Wall European cinema inventively rethought the identities, ideologies, image, and popular memory of the continent. By connecting these films to political and philosophical debates on the future of Europe, as well as to contemporary critical and cultural theories, Galt redraws the map of European cinema.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective on European Cinema.......2006-08-17

An interesting and intelligent read, aimed at academia but with much to offer the informed layman, Galt's book addresses an area of film theory that so far seems to have merited little discussion. While focusing on films of the 90s, the book's ideas remain topical, and will have you looking at some old favourites with a fresh and newly-informed perspective.

                  4 out of 5 stars a double perspective.......2006-07-24

Galt gives us a strange double perspective in her analysis of European films. These were mostly made around 1990, as communism collapsed in eastern Europe. And they were mostly made by people in those countries. But the settings of the films tended to be in World War 2 or in the immediate aftermath. The doubleness of the analysis is given by her book being written presumably shortly before the book was published in 2006. This 15 year lapse gives another temporal distance, that aids in the objectivity of the analysis.

What we see in the movies is that they were made in a time that was consciously aware of its historic significance. As a transition between eras. Between the Cold War and whatever would come after it. Hence, Galt choose to look at the movies set at the end of World War 2. She reads in them a subtext that just as those were at the end of another era, so too was this used as a thematic vehicle for the hopes (and fears) of 1990.

                    Book Description

Have de-industrialization, expanding services and occupational upgrading put an end to class divisions? Drawing on extensive empirical research, this book adds new insights to the debate about the end of class and shows that Western European societies remain decidedly stratified with respect to material advantages and citizenship rights. Well grounded in theory, it offers a highly original account of today's social stratification and presents novel findings about working conditions, political preferences and pension coverage of different classes in contemporary Britain, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.

                    Book Description

This uniquely penetrating guide to where Europe as a whole, from the European Union to Russia, may be heading as it approaches the new millennium focuses on its historical driving forces, its politics and economics, and its strategic options. Michael Emerson draws on rare experience of Europe's new political and economic structures, from Brussels to Moscow, to explain Europe's contradictory tendencies towards both integration and conflict. He confronts the two strategic issues for the Europe of the early 21st century: how to ensure success for the euro and how to stabilize the wider Europe with a strong structure for EU-Russian relations.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-19

Author Michael Emerson - a former European Union (EU) Ambassador to Moscow and European Commission official - has created a concise, systematic analysis of the cultural background, policy issues and the political-science frameworks surrounding the emerging organization of a 21st-century Europe. This is not a book for the casual observer of European politics - but anyone with a sincere curiosity about the nuts-and-bolts construction of the integrated Europe will be fully sated. The book has the advantages and disadvantages of being densely packed with details, but the strong introduction, conclusion and index help the reader put it all together. Although the publication date - 1998 - ensures that some of this information is dated, the book might actually benefit from its pre-euro publication, in that Emerson's arguments give full optimistic credit to the potential of a unified Europe. We [...] recommend this valuable resource to executives with business interests in Europe and all students of globalization.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent and thought-provoking discussion on Europe.......2000-01-20

I use this book as part of the recommended reading in a course on EU Enlargement. The author is very knowledgable and I find the book clearly written. It deals, in an interdisciplinary fashion, with many facets of 'What is Europe'. I found the discussion of the divisions and unity in Europe based on geography, history, politics and economics interesting and convincing. The vision of a Europe that he develops into a 'European Civil Society' is much in tune with the times, enlightened and realistic. The historic possibility of an enlarged EU toward 25 or more members is closer than ever before, a means to overcome religious, linguistic, cultural and political divisions of centuries or millennia. It can, and will, happen, provided robust institutions are there to support it. Utopic as it all perhaps may seem (and it is always much easier to be a cynical pessimist), the author rightly points out the often bloody and nationalistic alternatives (all also very European) that have been tried time and time again, and from which there are still very real dangers today. To counter these he makes a number of constructive proposals on linkages and current overlapping institutional set-ups. Provocative and interesting.

                                    Book Description

There are many books available on the technical theories that underlie direct marketing methods. This is not one of them! With The Direct Marketing Cookbook you will acquire the skill and knowledge needed to create successful direct marketing programs that garner profitable responses. Discover how to identify and create offers that sell, contact potential customers without being bothersome, gather needed customer information, turn responses into sales, and even how to dominate the marketplace in your industry.

The Direct Marketing Cookbook teaches and guides both professionals and those responsible for marketing their businesses, how to successfully plan, develop, execute and manage direct marketing programs that can build their customer base and keep customers coming back. The simple truth is that many business professionals have little or no marketing experience, especially in the complex and confusing area of direct response marketing. Yet they are constantly challenged to acquire more of the right customers if they are ever to survive these difficult times.

It makes no difference whether you work at AT&T, IBM, or as a consultant with a part-time secretary; The Direct Marketing Cookbook: A Recipe for Getting and Keeping Customers will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the system and techniques needed to master the process of developing successful direct marketing programs.

What a refreshing and remarkable anthology on how to garner consumer attention, generate qualified leads and maintain customer loyalty. I read this book from cover to cover as it flawlessly provided me with a host of direct marketing solutions that I had long been trying to create for my business. The book goes beyond marketing into customer service, retention, and recurring sales. I believe it dovetails seamlessly into the infrastructure needed to support and ongoing integrated marketing strategy. Definitely, a must read for those who need to acquire more of the right customers and retain them long after the initial sale.

3 out of 5 stars Overview on Latin America.......2000-04-05

This is a great book to see how countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico made their structural reforms to fight for a democracy and to be part of the most potential countries in the region. Definitely, this is a book that the congressman in Paraguay should be reading, and every other country in Latin America that wants to follow potential countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

                                              Book Description

The debt crisis of 1982 caused serious economic disruptions in most developing countries. Reform, Recovery, and Growth explains why some of these countries have recovered from the debt crisis, while more than a decade later others continue to stagnate.

Among the questions addressed are: What are the requirements for a stabilization policy that reduces inflation in a reasonable amount of time at an acceptable cost? What are the effects of structural reforms, especially trade liberalization, deregulation, and privatization, on growth in the short and long runs? How do macroeconomic instability and adjustment policies affect income distribution and poverty? How does the specific design of structural adjustment efforts affect results?

In this companion to Macroeconomics of Populism in Latin America, the authors confirm that macroeconomic stability has a positive effect on income distribution. The volume presents case studies that describe in detail the stabilization experiences in Brazil, Israel, Argentina, and Bolivia, and also includes discussion of Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Turkey.

For decades, Central America has faced market dependency, natural disasters, and political systems characterized by protectionist policies and low participation--situations that have had a tremendous impact on its economic development. This two-volume set is a comprehensive assessment of Central America's position in the world economy, and it serves as a handbook for the important economic reforms Central America must undertake to become a viable competitor in the international economy.
