Book Description
There are a number of distinctive features of this book that makes it different from other on Six Sigma.
It recognizes that there are two diametrically opposing views expressed on Six Sigma, those that are strongly in favour, and those that are not, for various reasons. The book deals, head on, with the principle reasons for such hostility. It cuts through the hype associated with the brand name. It proposes simple remedies for certain defined frailties in the standard approach, particularly those related to the Sigma Measure that provides the brand name for the Six Sigma breakthrough strategy.
The book is highly supportive of the Six Sigma continuous improvement process, provided it is tailored to the needs and expectations of a particular organization. The commitment and active participation of top management is emphasized, to ensure the necessary change in culture and priorities demanded, in most organizations.
Practical guidance is given in the setting up, operating and developing the project by project approach across an organisation. The book also covers how to equip a critical mass of members in an organization with the core workforce competencies required to get the desired results.
The book covers the realities of applying Six Sigma in a range of functions within an organization and also to various types of organizations from the manufacturing sector to commerce and public service. It demonstrates how statistical thinking, coupled with the application of technical and operational knowledge of processes and focus provided by Six Sigma, can considerably enhance quality, competitiveness, effectiveness and efficiency.
Statistical process control is a tool, which enables both manufacturers and suppliers to achieve control of product quality by means of the application of statistical methods in the controlling process. This book gives the foundations of good quality management and process control, including an explanation of what quality is, and control of conformance and consistency during production. The text offers clear guidance and help to those unfamiliar with either quality control or statistical applications and coves all the necessary theory and techniques in a practical and non-mathematical manner. This book will be essential reading for anyone wishing to understand or implement modern statistical process control techniques.
* Well-known, authoritative author
* Cuts through the 'hype' surrounding the subject
* Offers real-life information about applying Six Sigma across a range of business functions, within varied organisations

Great Collection of Articles.......2007-03-22
There are eleven good articles in this little book, some of which are reprints and others of which are original. The first, by Gunaratna, is perhaps his best writing on the post-9/11 Al Qaeda threat. Cronin's article follows on terrorism as anti-globalization. Third up is an article on financial counterterrorism tactics which bridge military and civilian resources. Fourth is a similarly interesting piece about using private contractors to fight substate foes. Fifth is a network theory piece about how to disrupt terrorist networks. Sixth is a WMD counterproliferation piece. Seventh is a reprint of Hoffman's 2003 update on his logic of suicidal terrorism. Eighth is a short number about how China handled the SARS epidemic. Nineth is the author's own contribution on preemptive strategy. Tenth is a reprint of Jenkins' thoughts on countering Al Qaeda. Eleventh is Gen. Downing's attempt to wrap things up in terms of the four D's of GWOT strategy: defend; defeat; deny; and diminish. Although in some parts this little book will have to be supplemented, there is no other more concise introduction for the beginner to GWOT strategy and tactics.

Book Description
Poverty reduction has come to be proclaimed as the core function of international development agencies, including the World Bank. This book focuses on a notion of best practice, and the key role which it can potentially play in strengthening anti-poverty strategies. Contributors explore the social and organizational factors influencing the transition of an ordinary particular anti-poverty project or strategy into becoming established as best practice. They examine the critical policy-relevant aspect of the conditions under which a best practice, once identified, and embedded as it is in a social setting, can be successfully transferred to other situations and countries.
Book Description
Updated to include the latest digital camera models, imaging software, and current image proofing and sales techniques, this business guide teaches wedding photographers how to build a profitable business. From formulating a business plan to presenting final images to clients, the strategies presented help photographers avoid the pitfalls that ruin many wedding photography studios. Photographers learn how to define a target demographic—whether that be low-volume big-budget or high-volume low-budget clients—and market to those demographics in print, on the Internet, through networking, and at bridal shows. Customer service tips include how to interview clients to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable portrait experience, conduct presession consultations, and write a contract, as well as presentation techniques for wall-size images, coffee-table–style books, and guestbooks. The featured images and drawings include a gallery of the author's wedding photographs and samples of advertising, marketing, and promotional literature.
Book Description
Beyond taking great photographs, professional wedding photographers must master a workable strategy for selling their images. Entrepreneurs of all levels will learn how to create, refine, and restructure their studio business and to achieve their financial goals with professional sales techniques. Covered are valuable skills such as creating pricing strategies and dealing with clients on a one-to-one basis. Advertising techniques from print ads and direct mailing to the latest opportunities and strategies made possible by e-commerce and digital photography are discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Pages missing.......2003-10-04
I almost liked the book until I found out that pages 17-32 are missing (but I've got a two-pack of pages 33-48 instead!).
Sending the book back to amazon.com costs about as much as to buy it, so I just pass a word of warning.
Otherwise, this book is quite practical and is good if you are a photographer already and are looking for details specific to the business.
By no means is it a book to learn photography. And do you need it after all? As the authors put it, "A photographer with mediocre talents and an incredible marketing and business structure can often become a success". The illustrations in this book are the best proof to this statement.
Wonderful addition to any Photographers library.......2001-08-06
This book is a wonderful and insightful addition to any professional photographers library. My wife and I found this book to be extremely helpful in our profession, not to mention the great photography throughout the book. A+ for any novice or professional who needs further information into how to market and sell a successful photography business.
The Things Good Photographers Need Most.......2001-05-17
I come in contact with thousands of talented photographers each year, both at my job as editor of Rangefinder Magazine and through WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers Intl.), where I edit the monthly newsletter and help coordinate the annual convention and speaker programs. Too many talented photographers don't have a clue as to how to price their work, how to market it effectively, and how to deal with clients. The Hawkins' new book gives photographers precisely that information in an approachable, easy to follow format. If wedding photography is your profession, you need to study this book. Even if already successful, you will undoubtedly find a few things in the book you will want to incorporate into your business, especially in the area of sales and marketing strategies. It's a must-own for the modern wedding studio.
Keeping customers happy.......2001-05-13
This book could serve as a valuable resource not only to wedding professionals and photographers, but other special events planners as well. It contains a great deal of useful information about building relationships with your clientele and easing them through what is often a very tense and stressful (but joyful) period. It is about much more than snapping pictures...it is about creating an atmosphere to be enjoyed and remembered for years after as a wonderful experience for everyone involved. A TERRIFIC RESOURCE!

From the supplier: The American equality principle should not be viewed as authorizing federal judges to invalidate reasonable affirmative action programs. The content of such programs should be a democratic, not a judicial, responsibility. More needs to be learned about the successes and failures of current programs to see which of them works best. More can also be learned from the affirmative action policies of other nations, such as India's programs to help its lower caste citizens.

From the supplier: The concept of "continuing violations" must be clearly defined in settling labor disputes. But they are often difficult to define because consequences of acts exist over time. Policies that exist over time create particularly difficult cases and parties in dispute must clearly define acts that enforce policies. A discharged employee who fails to file a complaint within the required time period is in a different situation than an employee who has been underpaid over time due to an administrative error.

From the supplier: The claim that Article II of the Constitution entrusts the President with authority over all implementation of federal law in order to provide political accountability for public harms constitutes constitutional revisionism. This interpretation of Article II would use as its justification against citizen suits a distinction between public and private accountable relators. Congress would therefore not have the power to allow citizens to sue private or public individuals who do not meet their legal obligations of accountability. Because Congress itself would be accountable for its actions if deciding to allow citizen suits, this interpretation does not make sense.
