Book Description

Investors are anxiously considering what sector will provide the next leap forward. Lou Dobbs, the best-known personality in American broadcast financial journalism, founder of CNNfn, CNNfn.com, and CNN's Lou Dobbs Moneyline, believes that question can be answered in five letters: SPACE.

In Space: The Next Business Frontier, Dobbs and co-author HP Newquist explore where the money has gone, is going, and will go in space development by the private sector. Here they examine which new technologies have the edge, which corporations are players in the space game and which are destined to be, what start-up companies have to do to become players, and how to judge for yourself which ones will have the best chances for success.

Space: The Next Business Frontier is a crucial examination of an industry with unlimited opportunity.

4 out of 5 stars Dated but Insightful Basic Space Business Premier.......2007-01-05

Lou Dobbs is a well known American through CNN. I read the book more because of who he is as opposed to his knowledge of space science. The book, after all, is entitled: Space - The Next Business Frontier. For a 2001 publication date, the book was and remains insightful. American space industry still faces the International Traffic in Arms Regulation of the U.S. State Department that he seeks to provide commentary. The Congress has yet to adopt a Zero Gravity Zero Tax regime so desperately needed to foster the commercial space business. After reading this book some time ago, I still cite it now and then because of the business personality author and because of his correct insights to make space commerce more viable even in 2007. It is a contribution to enlisting non-space business niche people to understand the sector's problems. It would be great if he updated and republished.

1 out of 5 stars This book is junk.......2003-11-19

Lou Dobbs is a national embarrassment. He obviously doesn't know how to think straight, as this book clearly shows. It is totally unrealistic. Space is not the next business frontier unless we are willing to hand over the satellite launch business and space tourism business to the low-cost and reliable Chinese. And that's something Dobbs does not realize in his wildest fantasy. This guy has zero imagination and clearly doesn't know how to make money. I wish I could give it zero star as it doesn't deserve any. The author of this book belongs in a lunatic asylum.

1 out of 5 stars China: the Next Hope for Space.......2003-11-18

Lou does not have the wits to realize that China is the only hope for future space business. Otherwise his scheme is totally out of this world. Save your money - don't buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars The Next Frontier?.......2003-10-19

Why not let the Chinese make all our rockets to space, under contract from Boeing? After all, their manned spaceflight is a success. Besides, EVERYTHING is now made in China at a fraction of the cost here. This way space business is guaranteed a future. The next frontier indeed.

    Book Description

Having already penned Getting in the Game, his inside scoop on the mayhem within baseball's winter meetings, Josh Lewin once again gives baseball fans a window into the big leagues. By interviewing big league ballplayers about their first day in the majors, Lewin creates fascinating mini-biographies of the players, highlighting the personalities hidden behind the on-field accomplishments. He lets the players recount their own memories of how they made it to the big leagues.

In You Never Forget Your First, Lewin shares the stories of players great and less so. Tony Gwynn recalls singling in his first at bat and finding Pete Rose waiting for him at first base with a wink and a warning: "Don't break my record all at once, kid." Bob Brenly heard of his call-up on the car radio while on a family trip to the Grand Canyon. He then stood helplessly in the middle of the Arizona desert after his transmission gave out, trying to convince passersby he was a ballplayer heading to the big leagues and needed a lift to the airport. Duane Kuiper witnessed a fight both on the field and in his own clubhouse his first day in Cleveland. Greg Maddux recalls being stuck at the Chicago River drawbridge, convinced he'd never make it to Wrigley Field in time for his debut.

Lewin interviews modern star players such as A-Rod, Barry Bonds, and Manny Ramirez, as well as Hall of Famers such as Jim Palmer, Don Sutton, and George Brett. More than 100 popular baseball players are profiled, complete with the box scores of their big league debuts.

    Book Description

Shorthand, as a means of written communication, has been with us for centuries. Such diverse men as Julius Caesar, George Bernard Shaw, and Charles Dickens all used shorthand. The plays of William Shakespeare, the words of St. Augustine, the lectures of Martin Luther, and the Gettysburg Address were all captured by an alert reporter using shorthand techniques.

No form of written communication has lasted so long or has had as much impact in world history as shorthand. The need to have an indelible record of courtroom proceedings led to the creation of the court reporter. Early on the reporter had to rely on pen and ink, but today has the advantage of a vast assortment of machines.

In The Record Never Forgets, Fannie H. Smith has presented an in-depth history of the development of shorthand and its eventual impact on court-reporting. With over 100 illustrations of key people, samples of shorthand technique, and the various court-reporting machines, hers is an unparalleled, exhaustive work. It is the fruit of nearly ten years of research.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A slapdash piece of work.......1999-11-30

True, this book contains a great deal of information, but it is not based on any thorough research. I would describe it as a haphazard compilation drawing extensively on works by other authors, many of which were published several decades ago. Consequently, it is not very up-to-date when it comes to the development of shorthand and reporting in other countries than the US.

The history of American machine shorthand is covered quite extensively, as are the lives of the shorthand inventors Isaac Pitman and John Robert Gregg. The various shorthand systems as such are described very briefly, and for a large part, the book consists of enumerations of names and dates (many of which either incorrect or misspelled).

The chapter dealing with the use of shorthand in non-English speaking countries contains some very grave inaccuracies. Even though the author claims to have brought her information up-to-date, most of what she writes about the situation in e.g. Germany and Scandinavia describes the situation decades ago. It is evident that Mrs Smith has not had access to modern sources.

When it comes to the early history of shorthand, the author mixes facts and myth in a very un-scholarly fashion, without any criticism of her sources. What she writes about shorthand in biblical (Old Testament) times is pure nonsense. It is based largely on the author's own imagination and reading of the Bible - not on any scientific evidence.

In addition to the chapters about shorthand, the book contains a chapter on the history of the typewriter and a chapter on cryptology. These chapters are for a large part just summaries of other works (according to the author, an article about the typewriter published by a Ms Gilman in the Journal of Court Reporting in 1977, and David Kahn's The Codebreakers from 1967 respectively).

The book contains countless misspellings and errors, which add to the impresssion that this book was written in great haste.

          Book Description

Despite China's growing importance on the world stage, it is often and easily misunderstood. Indeed, there are many Chinas, as this sustained survey of contemporary China vividly illustrates. Offering the first comprehensive geography of the reform era, the authors trace the changes occurring in this ancient nation across both time and space. Beginning with China's diverse landscapes and environments, and continuing through its formative history and tumultuous recent past, this text places China in its international context as a massive developing nation that must meet the needs of its 1.3 billion citizens while becoming a major regional and global player. Through clear prose and abundant maps and photos, the book highlights the diverse landscapes, economies, and cultures that represent China today.

              Book Description

One aspect that overwhelmingly defines the second half of the 20th century is the remarkable economic growth of Asia. This book offers a comprehensive view of the various factors--scientific, technological, and economic--that enabled the region to make a brilliant comeback after centuries of oppression. The past is often a mirror into the future. By exploring these factors from a historical perspective, the book attempts to look into the future and predict what the twenty-first century and the new millennium will bring.

5 out of 5 stars A priceless resource for understanding new religions.......2002-08-27

In this fascinating book, professors Karla Poewe and Irving Hexham look at the new religions that have been spawned within the last two hundred years, indeed right to this very day. The first chapter is a look at the "Great Anti-cult Crusade," wherein the authors show how many people, especially (but not limited to) those of a Christian background, have misunderstood, and battled the new religions. After that, the authors plunge into an erudite look at the new religious; placing them within a global context, showing the underlying concepts that tie the new religions together, and explaining what sets them apart from the older religions that they often claim to be a part of.

This book is quite fascinating, and offers the reader a real in-depth understanding of where the new religions are coming from and where they are going. Individual groups are referenced, but the focus of this book is on their underlying premises and similarities, rather than a look at each group in particular. My one complaint against this book is that is written in a scholarly tone, that sometimes makes the writing hard to follow (for me, that is). However, in spite of that, I do think that this is an excellent book, and a priceless resource for understanding new religions.

As the global economic downturn makes itself felt in all aspects of the global telecom industry, sobering announcements of financial losses, sweeping layoffs, investment write-downs, and office closures are becoming daily fare. As evidenced by a new sense of conservatism emerging in revenue forecasts industry-wide, telecom executives appear to be less certain about their companies’ business outlook. Is the heyday of the telecommunications industry over? According to the Yankee Group’s latest Global Network Strategy (GNS) End-User Survey, the pessimists have yet to win the game. According to our survey results, corporate network users in Hong Kong and Australia, on average, expect their communications services budgets to grow by as much as to 20% in 2002. And, although corporate spending on voice services will remain flat, data and IP services will continue to be a strong growth area. A year ago, a majority of MNCs in Asia-Pacific were skeptical about the scalability and reliability of IP-based networks, but those perceptions have been changing. As shown in Exhibit 1, when asked about the three major changes to their network over the next two years, approximately 45% of respondents say they expect to deploy IP VPN.

                    Book Description

As Japan comes to grips with a decade of economic malaise after its spectacular post-war growth record, how will Japanese society react? Contributors to this volume examine the challenges ahead for Japan in the fields of politics, economics, sociology, environment and business. This multidisciplinary inquiry looks for areas of continuity and for new directions in government, business and social policy and practice. Also examined is how Western students should approach the study of Japan; what new directions should institutions take to ensure that students learn about the `real' Japan? Written by Canadian academics, the articles in this volume will be of interest to academics and policy-makers studying or teaching about contemporary Japan.
