Book Description
After decades of egalitarian, restricted consumption, residents of China's cities are surrounded by a level of material comfort and commercial hype unimaginable just ten years ago. In this first in-depth treatment of the consumer revolution in China, fourteen leading scholars of Chinese culture and society explore the interpersonal consequences of rapid commercialization.
In the early 1980s, Beijing's communist leadership advocated decollectivization, foreign trade, and private entrepreneurship to jump-start a stagnant economy, while explicitly rejecting any notion that economic reforms would promote political change. However, by the early 1990s the reforms in the marketplace not only produced double-digit growth but also enabled ordinary citizens to nurture dreams and social networks that challenged official discourse and conventions through millions of daily commercial transactions. Using participant observation, contributors to this book describe and analyze a wide range of these changing consumer practices: luxury housing, white wedding gowns, greeting cards, McDonald's, discos, premium cigarettes, bowling, and more.
Customer Reviews:
If you're interested in Chinese studies..........2006-12-19
There are some definite highs and lows in Deborah Davis' book (lows being the very first chapter on housing developments and an entire chapter devoted to greeting cards), but the book gives a very in-depth analysis of the effects rapid consumption in urban areas has had on the daily life of urban Chinese citizens. Davis selects essays that show changes in culture, like the essays regarding McDonald's, discos, and bowling. Davis even shows us consumption patterns in the more marginal cultures of China. For instance, there is an essay devoted to the Hui (an Islamic minority in China) wedding tradition. Since rapid consumption has happened in China, these Hui women are starting to wear more Western-style wedding dresses. These dresses greatly resemble the dresses we see everywhere in America, with the exception that the Hui women's dresses are brighter in color (coral, pink, red).
Davis also devotes much of the book to showing changes in eating traditions. One chapter on outdoor food markets explains the shady side of economics in China. Food vendors will cheat Chinese so much that some Chinese will bring their own scales to weigh the food. Also, in the chapter dealing with the influx of McDonald's into urban China, we can see that the push for modernity can sometimes win over Chinese tradition. For instance, some people will go into McDonald's and just sit by the window so they can have a sense of superiority over the people walking by on the street. Many Chinese people don't even like the food at McDonald's, but feel the need to go to express their modernity.
Davis' book shows us many different effects of the consumer revolution, both good and bad. I recommend this book for anyone interested in studying China. Just don't get discouraged when you come across a dry chapter!
An insight into the sociology of consumption in China.......2001-07-11
The consumer revolution in China is a relatively recent phenomena with the former state controlled society slowly moving to a capitalist market where the individual is beginning to exercise choice in his/her consumption decisions. Chinese consumer behaviour is therefore a relatively unchartered area and this collection of studies by 14 authors provides a socio-political context for a range of consumer practices. The studies range from a semiotic analysis of advertising for luxury housing in Shanghai to an analysis of the social impications of the emerging trends of adopting Western bridal wear, purchasing greeting cards, and visiting discos. The book helps the reader get under the skin of an otherwise impenetrable consuming society with anecdotes and insights not available anywhere else. It makes for highly absorbing reading and I would recommend it to anyone interested in gaining an understanding of consumers in this unique market

A great portrait of chinease consummer in the 21st cent.......2001-04-06
The book has some very good facts and concepts about Chinese culture and consumers. However, it is very Chinese in its writing style - not linear but very circular. The author covers issues in somewhat random order and occasionaly covers the same concept multiple times. He leaves it up to the reader to sort out the infomation. It reads easily and is full of interesting thoughts and ideas on how to penetrate the largest market of the 21st century. We recommend this book to all of our clients who are thinking about exporting to, or establishing an operation within China.

Book Description
China's rapid economic growth has attracted much international attention in recent years, partly due to the potential purchasing power of the largest population in the world. This timely book examines general patterns of Chinese household demand for a variety of consumer goods such as food, durables, housing and health care and investigates the impact of economic and social factors on household consumption.
China's Consumer Revolution focuses on comparisons between different consumer groups, such as rural versus urban and rich versus poor. Special attention is given to the impact of the newly affluent consumers, the so-called 'new rich'. This book also compares China with other countries in terms of household demand for consumer goods and sheds light on the prospects for international trade in this area. Drawing upon newly released household surveys, this book is the first of its kind and it will be of interest to both academic researchers and business advisors.

Lectures on the History of Political Philosophy
ASIN: 0300107889 |
Book Description
In this first book-length study of positive law, James Bernard Murphy rewrites central chapters in the history of jurisprudence by uncovering a fundamental continuity among four great legal philosophers: Plato, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas Hobbes, and John Austin. In their theories of positive law, Murphy argues, these thinkers represent successive chapters in a single fascinating story.
That story revolves around a fundamental ambiguity: is law positive because it is deliberately imposed (as opposed to customary law) or because it lacks moral necessity (as opposed to natural law)? These two senses of positive law are not coextensive yet the discourse of positive law oscillates unstably between them. What, then, is the relation between being deliberately imposed and lacking moral necessity? Murphy demonstrates how the discourse of positive law incorporates both normative and descriptive dimensions of law, and he discusses the relation of positive law not only to jurisprudence but also to the philosophy of language, ethics, theories of social order, and biblical law.

Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive defence of legal positivism on the basis of a novel account of social conventions. Marmor argues that the law is founded on constitutive conventions, and that consequently moral values cannot determine what the law is. On the basis of a theory of social conventions and an analysis of law's authoritative nature, the book sets out the scope of law in relation to moral and other critical values. The book also maintains, however, that moral values are objective. It comprises a detailed analysis of the concept of objectivity, arguing that many aspects of the law, and of moral values, are metaphysically objective.

The Transmission of Affect
ASIN: 0415237068 |
Book Description
Exhausting Modernity is a bold and exciting new work on the exhaustion of our resources, both natural and human. Brennan marshalls the insights of Marx and Freud to provide a compelling analysis of the pervading modern capitalism: environmental collapse, rising poverty levels, and the increased global economic disparity. Linking the consumption of environmental resources to our own depleted psychic life, she shows that modernity must be rethought if we are to find a sustainable future for both the environment and our own psychic life.

Book Description
Power Selling distills the hundreds of strategies, techniques, and behaviors used by the world's best salespeople to seven strategies.
Every year, it seems, there's a new ""can't fail"" approach to selling. For sales professionals, that means more training sessions to attend, more workshops and simulations, and, of course, ever more pressure to produce.
George Ludwig believes salespeople deserve better. He's spent the past 20 years observing and researching the most effective sales strategies in the world-from the phenomenal success of celebrities like Zig Ziglar and Dale Carnegie, to ordinary men and women who produce extraordinary sales results. These people must have something in common, Ludwig theorized. And like a tenacious scientist, he finally ""cracked the selling code,"" as he describes it, by distilling and synthesizing hundreds of skills, strategies, techniques, and behaviors to seven core areas.
Salespeople who are tired of theories and hungry for results will welcome this simple, powerful tool for achieving extraordinary sales outcomes. PowerSelling helps readers realize and appreciate their own power, including the power of:
*
Reputation: including ways to invest and leverage their identity for increased sales.
*
Real Passion: or how to direct their psychology and physiology for greater results.
*
Research: how to diagnose prospects more effectively following the RPM Questioning Model.
*
Rapport: how to engage prospects faster and with more credibility.
*
Resource Management: how to utilize their primary ""tools"" to seize more sales.
*
Resiliency: with advice on turning sales setbacks into sales comebacks.
*
Relationships: or how to convert client satisfaction into unbreakable client loyalty.
Asking readers to raise the bar on their personal best, Ludwig gives salespeople the tools they need to heighten awareness, change behaviors, and make the most of innate sales skills. Readers will also have access to a ten-minute online quiz to test their current proficiency of the seven powers.
Customer Reviews:
The Sales Funnel.......2007-05-21
One of the most powerful messages in this book is on page 127. It is here that Ludwig illustrates the sales funnel. This is a core philosophy and driver in the sale profession that many times is ignored. Great book and solid message.PowerPrinciples: Do You Have The Winning Edge?
A Good Read ! .......2005-07-29
Sales folks by nature tend to be uninhibited, and when they become sought-after trainers and speakers, audiences reinforce this tendency by responding warmly to charming, oddball openers and anecdotes. In this case, however, even while providing substantial advice, author George Ludwig demonstrates that personal stories that bring down the house during a speech don't always translate into print. Moreover, a single anecdote, like a sharpshooter's bullet, often has more effect than a machine-gun spray of tales. Some of the stories (maybe the one about "Captain Underpants") don't contribute much. If you put the distracting anecdotes aside, however, what you have left is a very solid book capitalizing on the author's extensive practical experience. Has Ludwig cracked a genetic "sales code" that will help you earn more? Maybe not. However, his seven secrets are seven staples any salesperson needs. We believe that most sales professionals and sales trainers will benefit from his sound motivational and logistical advice.
George Ludwig - The Power of Real Passion Personified.......2004-08-20
Our firm has had the pleasure of working with George in a consultative relationship, and when he told us about his vision for "Power Selling" I was concerned. George is chapter two ... The Power of Real Passion. How are you ever going to capture your energy and enthusiasm for attracting and retaining client relationships in a book...I wondered. Well, he has done it. By reading Power Selling you will feel George's energy ramp up with every passing chapter. This book is the only resource that I've come accross that takes the best of sales success of the past half century and finally connects the dots. If you're looking for gimmicks and a quick fix then move on. But if you have a passion for people and a passion for your commodity, then this book is a must read!
This book has topped Strategic Selling and Solution Selling.......2004-08-07
George Ludwig grasps concepts that seem to have eluded many of the leading thinkers in sales and he debunks many of the myths that revolve around so-called "strategic selling". His original research that uncovered "the seven powers" of the world's greatest salespeople, which are really "best-of-breed practices," is right on the money. This might be the first sales book you could actually hand to your buyer and say "Here's how I'd like to proceed with you," because of the integrity and trust woven into the Power Selling approach. I literally read the entire book cover-to-cover in one sitting, and as of this writing I'm reading it a second time. And Ludwig's on-line assessment tool is a great addition to the book. The book has definitely helped my air charter business grow to the next level and it's the best overall book on selling strategy I've ever read--and I think I've read most of them.
A Must Have For Your Sales Library - A Fresh Point of View!.......2004-08-07
I love this book! I was quite surprised at Ludwig's refreshing and unique sales approach which if employed will (according to some heavy hitting testimonials) boost your bottom line. Ludwig's "Up Close and Personal" writing style makes Power Selling an enjoyable read while revisiting old strategies and inventing some fundamental new strategies Ludwig's Power Selling will revitalize your selling style. This is a nuts and bolts tool that can be used by sales professionals as well as business professionals across the spectrum for purposes of honing skills in the areas of client communication, client relationships and customer service. Mr. Ludwig might want to do a sequel to Power Selling, leave out the abundance of quotes and stick to his own inventive, ingenious thoughts - they are definitely worth expounding on. C. Roach
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK ROCKS!.......2007-07-27
Nothing will stop corporate America to raising credit card interest rates to 100% if they can get away from it. Sure you can sue the them, but did you know you can sue the company that issued that debt? Like the ENTIRE Board of Directors too? NOTHING will stop companies from REAPING off consumers faster then this book. I could not even read the fine print on my CC bill. This allows you to FIGHT back. Don't believe the reviews, this is a Harvard Lawyer, he's knows EXACTLY what he is talking about. Go Stanley, Go! :-)
Horrible Book.......2006-05-26
This book is one-sided and a total waste of time and money. The "solutions" he offers are not detailed and many are very unrealistic.
I am a 3L law student that knows a little regarding collections and this book is a horrible book for the average person to use. He recommends filing a malpractice suit to fight against medical collections - this is total BS and will get any attorney in hot water. Additionally, the average person that cannot afford a $500 medical bill will definitely not be able to pay the retainer on a med-mal suit that is groundless (let alone no attorney in their right mond would file such a suit).
He outlook on the judiciary system and juries is also distorted and very disturbing. Lawyers like Hilton should be disbarred.
Where's the Beef?.......2006-03-28
I read this book and the author is very vague about how you can go about doing some of the things he brings up in the book.
At least he could have suggested some lawyers that are versed on
how to proceed with some of this debt elimination tactics that he describes. After reading the book one is left to fend for oneself without much in the way of help or useful information just vague ideas.
Do NOT buy this book! It is full of lies and outdated information!.......2006-03-15
I have over 5 years of professional credit repair experience and I know just about everything there is to know about credit repair. I have read many books on the subject, but this is the worst one I have ever come across! The author states that FICO scores are issued by TRW, yet TRW has not existed for over 10 years! He further states that the credit bureaus have 60 days to complete an investigation request by any consumer, yet the Fair Credit Reporting Act, cleary states that they have 30 days to conclude any investigation! The author goes on to say that writing letters will not work, which is precisely the way that I have helped hundreds of people, including myself. The author states that the only way to remove negative or inaccurate items is to sue the credit bureaus! Well, this is easily said than done and he knows it! This is yet another lie! For all I know, the author probably works for the credit bureaus and banks by feeding the reader false, inaccurate, outdated information and drilling to sue the bureaus and creditors, because he knows it is easier said than done! I do not like this book, I do not recommend at all and the writing style is just plain dumb as it has absolutely no logic and too much beating around the bush for nothing in order to make the book thicker. I can't understand how it got published!
Unique and liberating perspective!.......2006-02-13
I love this book - if only for the way that it challenges the idea that creditors are right and debtors should feel guilty for existing. Credit card companies are feeding off the consumer by luring them in with promises, and then suddenly imposing impossible fees and interest rates.
Debtors don't fight back - and they should!! This book shows one way how to do that - and I am very appreciative. And I imagine it's a pretty scary idea to credit card companies - that we can turn around and sue them for harrassment, for usuary, for bait and switch.
I'm postive that some of the bad reviews here are from credit card companies - particularily the laughable one which says that sueing companies is illegal and will get you in trouble. Even that review tries to make you feel guilty - "you borrowed the money, so suck it up." Well, I borrowed the money at 4% interest, not 30%, which I got after one late payment. There's a word for that - it's called loan shark.
Thank you to Mr. Hilton for a book of empowerment! Whether or not I decide to follow his advice (which I probably will,) it was liberating to even think about it!
