The form and dynamic of wages and salaries are crucial to the shaping of industrial societies. Wage relations are regulated by states both to benefit their economies and to achieve a specific form of freedom, equity and justice. Though there are signs of a common dynamic, wage relations throughout Europe present a bewildering diversity and wage bargaining at European level remains virtually non-existent. Wages were recognised as an issue of concern by the Social Charter but the European Union has shunned direct interference.
This book is intended to inform and intensify debate on wage relations in Europe. It focuses on three aspects: the state and the regulation of wages; wage forms, the reproduction of labour and living standards; and competition, the market and changes in work organisation. In papers and discussion by a range of leading experts from eastern and western Europe, rehearsed initially at a symposium supported by the European Commission, entrenched orthodoxies are challenged and new approaches proposed.
Should social protection be integrated into the wage system? Are wages best determined according to the quality, quantity or value of the input or the output of labour? How do wage relations reinforce inequalities and social divisions, especially gender divisions, and exclude sections of society? Have flexibility in the labour market and unregulated competition adversely affected firms' productivity and the organization of work and pay? These and many related questions are addressed in this wide-ranging and provocative book - essential reading for all those concerned with wage policies, whether politicians, academics, employers, trade unions or those `just interested'.

We are getting a "pleasant" divorce. Very few fights, just have different gooals in life. This book almost got me stirred up. It pushes many hot buttons and wants you to prepare for battle. I promptly destroyed the book for fear that my spouse would find it and get even more stirred up than me.

It appears to be accurate, but I can't recommend it.

The book is well organized, clearly relates the history of family law in Texas, and makes references to the law that are easy to follow. Mr. Vanden Eykel's professional, yet compassionate approach to divorce in Texas makes this book a wonderful way to access sound legal advice at a fraction of an hourly attorney's fee. It is this reader's sincere hope that marriages can be reconciled whenever possible. Initially as a "greene country towne," the city's development led to significant pollution concerns, including rivers filled with sewage, typhoid deaths, and smoky plumes from coal combustion. Technological pollution controls improved conditions, but blunt regulatory tools eventually evolved into more refined economic approaches. This book describes that transition and the economic mechanisms that have emerged in recent decades, as well as prospective markets for ozone precursors, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental risk (potentially offering what one pundit labeled "cancer futures"). As an environmental history, this book rates five stars because the author so skillfully and comprehensively weaves together the many different threads that form the actual experience of environmental protection. At the most basic level, the book is a history of pollution in Philadelphia, a surprisingly good choice since it was an important colonial city, a major manufacturing center during the industrial revolution, and a typical troubled post-industrial metropolis of the 20th century. At the same time the book is a history of environmental management and ecomomics. And it discusses the trajectories of pollution-control technologies and the politics of pollution as well. Able to quote authoritatively from environmental regulations and quantitative risk assessments in one chapter, and from philosophers like Isiah Berlin and Lewis Mumford in others, the author provides readers with as detailed, comprehensive, and engaging a story as one can find in the literature on environmental history.

Dr. Raufer introduces the reader to the multifaceted environmental history of one of America's most unique urban environments. From the early privies to modern waste facilities, Raufer chronicles the city's solutions to problems and the problems that resulted. Following the history is an in-depth and informative section on current environmental regulations and how they came about. I highly recommend this for anybody interested in environmental issues or even Philadelphia history. I actually found the book hard to put down at times.

Introduction is an understatement.......2005-08-21

This book gives a very quick introduction to sustainable development and economic principals. There are short colorful chapters on GDP/GNP as a measure of welfare, pollution levels in different countries, foreign investment, etc. but it simply introduces the concepts and mentions why they are important. There is very little in depth discussion.

The second half of the book contains tables of data collected by the World Bank on foreign aid, immigration, pollution/air quality, population growth, GNP per capita, and so on.

Buy this book for the data, and if you are new to the economics of sustainable development. Don't buy it if you want to do any research or reporting of your own.
