    Book Description

While considerable progress has been made in analyzing the formulation of international economic policies, the existing literature remains deficient in several respects. First, the existing models take a relatively simplistic view of the political-economy environment. For example, in contrast to the observed reality, a large majority of the models view the government as a monolithic entity. Second, there is only limited recognition of the political-economy interactions between interest groups across national borders. Third, dynamic factors governing trade policy formulation have been essentially absent in the literature. Fourth, the empirical work in this area, both cross-industry within national boundaries and cross-national, is very much in infancy and in need of further development. Fifth, other aspects of international economic policy such as foreign aid and foreign direct investment have been scarcely addressed in the existing literature. In this volume, edited by Devashish Mitra and Arvind Panagariya, a group of distinguished scholars in international trade, especially from the younger generation, analyzes several of these important but neglected aspects of the political economy of international economic policy. The volume contains 12 essays topped by an introduction by the editors. The contributors to this volume are Alok Bohara, Carl Davidson, David Feldman, Kishore Gawande, Amy Glass, Omer Gokcekus, Keith Hall, William Kaempfer, Justin Knowles, Pravin Krishna, Phil Levy, Chris Magee, Steve Matusz, Wolfgang Mayer, John McLaren, Devashish Mitra, Alex Mourmouras, Doug Nelson, Arvind Panagariya, Martin Richardson, Martin Ross, Kamal Saggi and Ed Tower. The volume makes major advances in the area of political economy of trade, aid and investment policy, and therefore will be of considerable interest to academic researchers and students of international economics. Because of its obvious focus on the process of policy formulation, economists as think tanks, international institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization, and trade-policy analysts in developed and developing countries will also read it.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Enjoyable Casebook..........2006-08-07

To litigate, negotiate, mediate, or arbitrate? That is the question. Unfortunately, unless you take advantage of a clinical program, law school does a pretty pathetic job of preparing you to litigate after graduation. However, whereas some attempt is actually made to teach law students something about litigation (see, e.g., courses in Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Legal Research and Writing), a minority of students receive exposure to alternative dispute resolution principles, which are increasing in popularity at courthouses nationwide.

This book won't make you a great negotiator, mediator, or arbitrator anymore than reading a baseball rulebook will make you a great umpire. However, if you take the information and techniques offered in this book and actually put them to use in hypothetical exercises, you'll be well on your way to acquiring skills that are every bit as practical and valuable as knowing how to deliver an opening statement or how to write a fantastic brief. (Trust me, they can even help you save a grand or two the next time you buy a car.)

Simply put, the book provides a nice survey of alternative dispute resolution concepts. Aside from the chapter that addresses arbitration law, you won't feel like you're reading an average law school casebook (for my money's worth, that's a good thing). Instead, Menkel-Meadow, Love, Schneider, and Sternlight do a nice job of explaining the basic ADR processes, i.e. negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, through law review articles, charts, diagrams, and even an occasional cartoon. The authors then offer insights about multiparty and international negotiating techniques, highlighting the importance of designing good processes.

Are there things I'd change if I were one of the authors? Sure. At times, some of the techniques seem like they'd be less successful if "opponents" negotiate in an old-school manner, i.e. in a way that doesn't embrace, but actually rejects the problem-solving approach advocated by the authors. (This also is a problem in GETTING TO YES.) Thus, better techniques on how to combat such opponents would be nice. Overall, however, I was quite surprised about just how much I actually learned from the book, especially from the negotiating and multiparty dispute resolution chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book that balances substance and policy.......2006-07-27

After having to research different ADR textbooks, I found that this book gave a great balance of "soft" skills and the law that isn't found in the rest of the books. For those law students who are used to reading incredibly case-heavy texts, this book takes a bit getting used to and seems like there isn't much to it. In fact, the skills taught in the law review articles are what can make the difference between an effective and ineffective mediator.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CASEBOOK.......2006-05-09

If any professor is thinking about getting this book for their ADR or negotiations class, PLEASE THINK TWICE! This is a HORRIBLE casebook with nothing but pure FLUFF and ZERO substance. We have a joke in my ADR class that not even Menkle Meadow read the book it is so unbelievably lacking in substance.

If you want to learn about negotiation just buy a $12 copy of "Getting to Yes". Not only will you have about 80% of what you'll find in the Menkle Meadow book, but you will actually learn something.

However, if you want to get a book to read to your parents to prove to them how horrible law school is, than this is the book for you.

Since its founding in 1975, Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy has been in the forefront of the struggle to end world hunger. Through its research, Food First has shown that there is more than enough food for every man, woman, and child on the planet, but all too often the poor do not have access to that food. The Paradox of Plenty gathers together excerpts from twenty-seven of Food First's best publications to provide an integrated overview of the world food system, how global politics affect hungry people, and the impact of the free market.

The Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First) was founded in 1975 and has been an important element in the struggle to end world hunger. Through its original research, Food First has consistently shown that there is more than enough food for every man, woman, and child on Planet Earth, but all too often the poor do not have access to that food. Highly recommended for personal, professional, academic, and public library collections, The Paradox Of Plenty: Hunger In A Bountiful World is an outstanding compilation of excerpts from twenty-seven of Food First's best writings designed to provide food system activists and the non-specialist general reader with an integrated overview of the world food system, how global politics affect hungry people, and the impact of the free market on the growth, processing, and distribution of foodstuffs.

        Book Description

From the War on Poverty to new farmers' markets, a food expert tackles America's dangerous dietary split

Limp lettuce. Rotting apples. Dusty cans of spinach, corn, and peas under glaring fluorescent lights. Such a setting does not appeal to the modern shopper, who much prefers softly lit stores stocked with fresh produce and healthy prepared meals, or even open-air markets. But for many impoverished Americans, as Mark Winne explains, such pleasant shopping experiences are simply not an option.

Closing the Food Gap tells the story of how we get our food: from poor people at food pantries or bodegas and convenience stores to the more comfortable classes, who increasingly seek out organic and local products. Winne's exploration starts in the 1960s, when domestic poverty was "rediscovered," and shows how communities since that time have responded to malnutrition with a slew of strategies and methods. But the story is also about doing that work against a backdrop of ever-growing American food affluence and gastronomical expectations.

Calling largely on his own experience in this field, mixing in surprisingly witty observations on our evolving relationships with food, Winne ultimately envisions realistic partnerships in which family farms and impoverished communities come together to address their continuing struggles.

"An engaging, candid, and sometimes funny look at how ordinary people—and extraordinary ones like the author—have struggled over three plus decades to create a fair food system, in the absence of public sector compassion. Winne has done it all—food coops, emergency feeding, farmers' markets, community gardening, Community Supported Agriculture, public policy. He tells us why and how, weaving into his own experiences stories from other cities across the country to create an essential picture of how people like him are struggling to reset the country's table for everyone."
—Joan Dye Gussow, author of This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader

"Closing the Food Gap is a deeply moving account of Mark Winne's long career as an advocate for policies that will ensure adequate nutrition for the poor. Reading this book should make everyone want to advocate for food systems that will feed the hungry, support local farmers, and promote community democracy—all at the same time. I want all my students to read this beautifully written and important book."
—Marion Nestle, Paulette Goddard professor of nutrition, food studies, and public health at New York University, and author of Food Politics and What to Eat

"Mark Winne tackles the world of food deserts, hunger relief and the disparities of the 'haves' and 'have-nots' from both a personal and professional viewpoint that at once educates on and illuminates these very complicated issues. Winne makes these issues and their interrelationships not only understandable but also compelling for all those who care about social justice in our country."

                          Book Description

New World Economies: The Growth of the Thirteen Colonies and Early Canada examines the economic development of both the original American colonies and early French Canada, looking at the impact of changing prices, capital flows, and shifts in demand. It is a companion volume to Marc Egnal's well-regarded earlier book, Divergent Paths, which emphasized the influence of culture and institutions upon growth. New World Economies studies transatlantic ties and sets forth a rigorous model to explain the pattern of growth. It features seventeen tables and more than one hundred graphs, many of which are based on original data. Several appendices present these valuable new statistics. Egnal's core argument is that the pace of economic development in the colonies reflected the rate of growth in the mother country. In advancing this central notion, the book employs a theoretical foundation that builds upon, and then moves beyond, the traditional "staple thesis." Thoroughly documented and rich in quantitative data, this study traces the trajectory of economic growth by region and establishes a clear connection between colonial and European rates of growth. Given its clear arguments, its rich data, and its persuasive overall method, New World Economies will interest scholars and students of economic history, of American and French-Canadian colonial culture, and of transatlantic relations during the eighteenth century.

In addition to the fact that this book is written from the perspective of a radio account executive it is poorly written and doesn't address the real problem that the title promises to address. If you have call reluctance or one of it's subsets such as telephobia (fear of prospecting with the phone)than you and your career need some serious help. Call reluctance behaviors such as telephobia are very real and the cost to salespeople are enormous. This author regergitates the same old useless information that anyone who has been in sales for more than 20 minutes has probably already heard. Here is an example of one of the exercizes in this book - "Cross your arms. Now switch arm position so your arms now go the opposite way. Feels odd, doesn't it?" He goes on to say that this will feel odd but if you do it long enough it will begin to feel natural and relates it to his program. In fairness he mentions that you may have heard this in a seminar before. Really? This is one of the oldest and most tired mini exercizes in the seminar business. The rest of the book isn't much better.

If you really have a fear of cold calling and want to find out the real reason as well as some specific things that you can do about it read The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance.

If your not selling media advertising save your money! This book contains less than 20% of information on actual cold calling. WASTE OF MONEY! All the positive feedback on this book must have been written by the authors friends, or by others who have never read a decent book on cold calling!

I am relatively new to the sales game, having spent most of my career in the nonprofit and public sectors. My new job requires lots of cold calling, often to larger corporations. I found Don's book (and his similarly titled class taught through the Learning Annex)to be very helpful. I came away with some great tips and several guiding principles. For example, his emphasis on organization and tips for managing leads got me to set up and actually use a contact database. His 20 call a day rule has helped break down my cold calling fear. His advice on dealing with gatekeepers was invaluable. One receptionist not only helped me land the account at her company, but referred me to her former company that had laid her off! I followed up and ended up landing the account! To be honest, I would have preferred less information specific to radio advertising sales, which shows up mostly towards the end of the book. But there is plenty of good information that can be universally applied.

This book has some valid sales tips, but the only place that conquering cold-calling fear is mentioned is in the title. The author indicates that more sales proficiency conquers cold-calling fears. I do not agree. I read the book and had no change in my call-reluctance. I am very very disappointed.

WoW! How can somebody gather up secondary sources and call this a book is beyond me! All it is is a listing of the websites where they sell products to you and the sites or stores features. Well gee I can do all that myself with sites like MySimon.com or heck, even Amazon.com whre you can easily compare the lowest prices.

The only somewhat useful information I found is the "What to do if your product didn't arrive," your rights, policies, safety etc, but nothing that I already didn't know.

So if you are a beginner and know nothing about shopping and how to compare prices, this book is great! If you are an expert, this will be your new doorstop after a day's reading.

There are some really good stores in this book which I had never heard of before. I was recently looking to purchase a camcorder and found one for $150 less than if I had bought it at Best Buy. I also found a vacuum cleaner for much less than if I bought it at the local mall. This book has already more than paid for itself. I highly recommend it.

What I hate is malls and the same old junk everywhere you go. What's great about this book is the hundreds of niche companies you've never heard of that have terrific products---and at discount prices! I found a source for packing materials that's going to save me hundreds of dollars a year when I ship out my artwork. I've bought fine food as gifts for less than I'd pay in my local supermarket. And so many of these places are still Mom and Pop operations. You talk to real people, not customer service reps...

Asia and Europe are becoming more and more important to one another, and yet scholarship about their relations remains thin. This book fills an important gap, by offering a comprehensive and timely analysis of the economic linkages among the key protagaonists from the two regions. It is especially important for developing theoretically based understandings about the nature of regionalism and region-to-region relations, providing alternative readings from among key perspectives. Written in an elegant style and replete with detailed information and useful tables, this book is a must for those interested in Asia, Europe and the political economy of regional issues.

                              4 out of 5 stars Eurasia Unplugged.......2001-01-28

In a world economy dominated by Europe, North America and East Asia, competition and contention among the three regions (the `Triad') shape global economic relations to a significant extent. How the triadic relationships unfold in the future will have a major impact on the distribution of power, wealth and opportunity for the citizens of these regions, and for the world at large.

The economic relationship between the European Union (EU) and East Asia is becoming an important structural feature of the world economy, and Christopher M. Dent, Senior Lecturer in Economics and European Studies at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside makes a commendable effort at drawing together the threads of the emerging EU - East Asian inter-regional tapestry.

Dent's latest book offers a thorough analysis of the present state of Eurasian economic relations, and their historical development, primarily in a post-war context. He examines bilateral, inter-regional and multilateral dimensions of EU - East Asia `economic diplomacy' with frequent reference to the wider triadic framework. Developments at the sub-national, state and regional level that influence the EU - East Asia economic relationship are identified.

In the concluding sections to most chapters, different theoretical perspectives from the field of international political economy are applied to enhance the reader's understanding of the substantive issues covered. The theoretical perspectives chosen from the field of international political economy - neorealism, neoliberalism, and Marxism - serve to highlight the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach.

The first chapter sets out the theoretical perspectives and introduces some of the economic themes echoed throughout the text. Following an overview of recent events up to 1998 in EU-East Asia economic relations, Dent details the development of `economic diplomacy' between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and South Korea. These relationships are all subjected to a rigourous treatment, backed up with a good many statistical and economic data presentations.

The economic development prospects and future challenges facing the East Asian states are reviewed, with consideration to the impact and implications of the 1997-1998 financial crises that enveloped Asia. The role of regionalism in both East Asia and Europe, and the evolution of inter-regional co-operation mechanisms also are covered. The inter-regional dimension provided by the Asia-Europe Meetings (ASEM), is discussed, as are challenges related to its future development. The concluding chapter considers the future prospects of the EU-East Asia economic relationship.

Dent's principal argument is that the EU must give greater priority to the promotion of its economic relationship with East Asia, a relationship that could have a significant impact on the international economic system in the twenty-first century. As the weakest component of the triadic link, the EU risks future `geoeconomic marginalisation' as the transpacific axis endures into the twenty-first century. Dent argues that the EU and major East Asian powers therefore must assume greater responsibilities for managing the international economic order, in part to counter the continuing influence of the United States in the global economy.

The text demands a careful reading, as Dent has peppered important insights throughout the narrative. A short review cannot do the study justice, but his treatment of EU - China relations is noteworthy. Dent makes a convincing case that China's accession to the WTO will have an unprecedented impact on international economic relations.

Of relevance to the current effort to launch a new round of trade negotiations, Dent considers the EU-US initiative to include new issues (environment, investment, labour, etc.) traditionally regarded as matters of domestic economic policy as unwelcome by China. Given its sensitivity to managing its own internal affairs, and the existing suspicions among developing countries about the inclusion of new issues, China becomes a formidable force against the further extension of the multilateral trading system. Mr. Pascal Lamy, EC Trade Commissioner, has acknowledged this recently, and urged that a new round be launched if possible before the formal WTO accession of China is completed.

Dent also points out that it is likely China will request WTO dispute panels targeting the EU anti-dumping regime, and deploy other multilateral instruments to further open the EU market for its products. In this regard, China will be joining with other states in the region, such as Indonesia, which are becoming more determined to overturn the European and American anti-dumping regimes. It is clear that access to the EU textile and clothing market, among others, will be a flash point in the future.

He also takes note of the key role in Chinese domestic and foreign economic policymaking played by the provincial authorities. The internal dynamics of Chinese political economy are rarely highlighted in western policymaking circles, where it is still assumed that Beijing really does hold all the power cards. Dent, however, realises this is a flawed perspective and proposes an eyes-open approach to engaging in economic diplomacy with China. Brussels would do well to heed him on this point, and take his counsel on developing a more robust engagement strategy for reinforcing the EU in East Asia as a whole.

Students of International Economic Relations, and Asian and European Studies will find the volume offers insights to the challenges facing East Asia, and the potential role the EU can play in the region.
