This book is quite informative and comperehensive. The essays are high-quality and present a wide variety of ideas on transformational leadership, its bases, and behavioral manifestations. I've actually read some of the academic articles on transformational leadership, which are somewhat confusing and inconsistent; I find this book to be the proper mixture of theories and approaches. I recommend it!

This is an interesting collection of essays. I never realized just how much leadership research has advanced. It seems like Avolio and Yammarino's associates are really pushing the frontiers of leadership knowledge forward. I am really pleased that some real scientific work is being done, because frankly, I am getting sick of reading some of the popular works, which come a dime a dozen.

      Description:
      This study aimed at empirically clarifying the similarities and differences between transformational, transactional, and charismatic leadership. More specifically, the convergent, divergent, and criterion validity of two instruments, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) and the Conger and Kanungo Scales (CKS), was explored. It was found that transformational and charismatic leadership showed a high convergent validity. Moreover, these leadership styles were divergent from transactional leadership. With regard to criterion validity, subjective (e.g. satisfaction) as well as objective (profit) performance indicators were assessed. Firstly, results indicated that transformational as well as charismatic leadership augmented the impact of transactional leadership on subjective performance. In addition, transformational and charismatic leadership both contribute unique variance to subjective performance, over and above the respective other leadership style. Secondly, transformational leadership had an impact on profit, over and above transactional leadership. This augmentation effect could not be confirmed for charismatic leadership. Furthermore, transformational leadership augmented the impact of both transactional and charismatic leadership on profit. Implications for leadership theory and practice are discussed.

                The completion of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations coincided with the development of a worldwide trend towards increased regionalism, as witnessed by the conclusion of NAFTA, the emerging process of regional integration in Latin America and the launching of APEC. While this new trend has caused some observers to evoke the prospect of a world economy increasingly divided among rival "trade blocs", recent studies by the OECD and the WTO suggest that regional trade agreements may complement rather than threaten the multilateral trade system.

                This book reproduces the proceedings of a conference on Regional Trade Agreements and Multilateral Rules after the Uruguay Round organized by the University of Liege Faculty of Law. The reports cover the following issues: - comparative analysis of the major regional trade agreements in Europe (excluding the EC domestic market system), the Americas and the Asia Pacific area; - the emerging new form of regionalism, inter-regionalism, the most spectacular example of which could be the Transatlantic Free Trade Area (TAFTA) currently under consideration; - comparative analysis of the treatment of selected issues under the major regional trade arrangements in the world and their relationship with the existing or emerging multilateral rules: rules of origin; dumping, subsidies and anticompetitive practices; intellectual property rights; social protection and social clause; environmental standards; national treatment; mutual recognition and legislative harmonization; dispute settlement mechanisms; - analysis of the extent to which multilateral rules act as a constraint on regional trade arrangements and the reciprocal influence between regional and multilateral trade rules.

                    This is a book full of contradictions. The few gems inside are hardly worth the price. Just to give a few-- on one hand he says spend most of your time with your bigger clients. Then talks about how great service he gives "all" his clients. Then says, some large clients don't want a lot of your time. I have been in sales all my life, moving into training and coaching. I never had a B client develop into an A, without time and effort. He goes on about being a "professional visitor", if you aren't in the office with the desire to close something. You call this soft selling? And how a sale should be 3 calls and 3 calls alone, meeting, proposal and close. Or you are doing something wrong. The bigger and more complex the sale the longer the sales cycle may be. Consultative selling takes as long as required to find the right solution. Most sales people quit after the 3rd attempt and if they're following this advice I can see why. Please let me know which salespeople are following this advice so I can go behind them and sweep up those commissions.

                    Straight forward advise. No gimmicks. Just very sound how to information on how the sales process works, and how to navigate within it. Very useful for all sales positions. Whether it be telemarketing or corporate sales or network marketing, this book will increase your ease of selling through mastery of the sales process.

                    Also, very interesting take on buying motives. The author is an advocate of the "we buy from want not need" consumer mindset. This of course flies in the face of the "uncover the hidden need (pain) sales philosophy and focuses squarely on want as the true emotional basis for buying. It just shows this fellow has experience and knows exactly what he's talking about. Buy this book. You'll be very glad you did.

                    PS. The recommended reading list suggested by the author is worth the price of the book by itself. No joke. I'm trying to help you here---buy the book!

                    5 out of 5 stars Far and away the best sales book I've ever bought.......2006-03-11

                    In his opening paragraphs Tim says that only 5 percent of his readers will attempt do anything permanent with the material covered, and that these 5 percent already know who they are. He goes on that the book is written for the other 95%, and that his goal is to get under my skin, be a thorn in my side, and make me uncomfortable with myself and my progress. If change is to take place it must come from within me, not from books, family, my work environment or some other outside force.

                    And it worked for me! I felt somewhat depressed and apathetic about my situation going in, but now have a clearer perspective on my issues and an action plan for moving forwards.

                    I've got about 20 sales books in my business bookshelf; some (Socratic Selling, SPIN Selling) address listening and questioning skills, others (How to make friends and influence people) address attitude, others (Strategic Selling) address organization, tactics and closing. This is far and away the best!

                    Soft Sell contains adequate coverage of all the topics in my other books, extracting the perls of wisdom of these other books, explaining them clearly and concisely and telling you where to go for more detail. Reading Soft Sell was like taking inventory of my sales skills to determine what is working best and what might need improvement. It also contains the tools necessary to pursue improvements. And it was also (for me) a positive attitude adjustment.

                    There is so much compressed and valuable content in the 248 pages of this book that I am sure I will return to it many times.

                    This is the best resource book on sales I have ever come across. When I started sales, I knew absolutely nothing... and I struggled for years.

                    I read other sales books, but I never quite got it.

                    Until I read this book. This book gives you the psychology, the tactics -- and what works now.

                    You won't find cliched 70's style sales techniques. And you won't find hard-sell techniques. In my market, which is home businesses and Network Marketing, specifically Emerald Passport, the hard sell does not work anymore.

                    This does -- and if you read this book -- and apply it -- I'm sure you will have the same success I am having. And let me tell you that as soon as you realize you need to learn how to sell and actually begin to learn, you will feel relief as your self-confidence goes up.

                    But perhaps more importantly, once you learn how to sell, you will not fear for your family because you will know that no matter what happnes, you will be able to provide for your family.

                    There is probably more here than most people need or can handle all at once. I'd going to guess I'll probably get more out of this book in a second reading some time in the future. However, that being said, I give a strong recommendation to this book to any in a selling career.

                    There is common selling advice here, but there is also items with a twist from the authors point of view. Every bit helps. There is something here that would make it worth reading for almost any sales professional or manager.

                    Another great thing in this book is a long list of recommended reading. These types of lists, when complied by someone trustworthy, are often worth there weight in gold. I plan on checking out some of his recommendations myself.

                    There is a lot here on setting goals and planning out the future. I am not big on "filling out the forms", however I recognize the importance of what it is that he is trying to get across here. Perhaps in my future I'll be more disciplined in this area.

                    The handling objections portion of the book is worth the price of owning it. Remember that it only takes one tip or bit of advice for a book like this to pay off in a big way. I give it a strong recommendation.

Myers mediates between discussing the intricacies of segmentation and positioning techniques and showing the ways these techniques can be interpreted and used in the real world. The book covers measuring scales, cluster analysis, conjoint analysis, multivariate analysis, CHAID, and classification and regression trees. Other chapters deal with perceptual positioning maps-point and vector, value maps laddering techniques, and quadrant analysis. Myers uses examples to explain research analysis and provides practical information. In addition to explaining how to evaluate results, he provides caveats and explains pitfalls of each technique.

                            Basically, if the reader has a formal background in marketing research, or has a basic business statistics "know-how", then this book could be a refresher, or a reviewer so to speak. Otherwise, the reader could end up scratching head upon reading the chapters that discuss discriminant analysis, F Ratio, CHAID, etc. I would recommend the readers to get a basic marketing research, or Database Marketing books. It covers almost the same topics, just a lot more comprehensible.

                            How can we determine which economic model best provides for economic development and social welfare? In this major comparative work, noted economist Carmelo Mesa-Lago analyzes three Latin American countries with divergent economic systems: Chile (a market economy), Cuba (socialist), and Costa Rica (mixed). He examines their economic and social policies, shows how these policies affect performance based on a set of socioeconomic variables, and ranks the countries among themselves (using new techniques) and in comparison with international indicators. The time frame of the study embraces thirty-eight years for Costa Rica (under the democratic social democracy) and Cuba (under the socialist revolution) and twenty-four years for Chile (under Pinochet and the return to democracy). Mesa-Lago focuses on the three diverse socioeconomic models that these countries represent during these periods.

                            Being a Student/admirer of Carmelo Mesa-Lago, I have seen his share of great works on Cuba and Latin America. None however compare to this one. This book has information that only Mesa-Lago, the formost Cuban economist outside of the island, could present and analyze. He breaks down the economies of Cuba, Chile, and Costa Rica and explains the path to development that each country has taken. IF you are a student of economics, international relations, political science... or just intrested in Latin American issues, this book is a must!!!
