      Book Description

How can a promise be a lie? Answer: when the promisor never intended to perform the promise. Such incidences of promissory fraud are frequently litigated because they can result in punitive damages awards. And an insincere promisor can even be held criminally liable. Yet courts have provided little guidance about what the scope of liability should be or what proof should be required. This book—the first ever devoted to the analysis of promissory fraud—answers these questions. Filled with examples of insincere promising from the case law as well as from literature and popular culture, the book is an indispensable guide for those who practice or teach contract law.

The authors explore what promises say from the perspectives of philosophy, economics, and the law. They identify four chief mistakes that courts make in promissory fraud cases. And they offer a theory for how courts and practitioners should handle promissory fraud cases.

          COMPETING AGAINST AMERICA

Critical acclaim for Competing Against America: Why Canada Has Fallen Behind in the Race for Talent and Wealth (And What To Do About It)

"Michael Alexander has provided a searching look into Canadian and American society and asked, why has the U.S. pulled so far ahead in the race for talent and wealth? His insightful answers should receive serious study from concerned citizens—on both sides of the border."
—Clark S. Judge, Managing Director, White House Writers Group, Washington, D.C.

While Canada no longer perches atop the leader board of the UN's Development Index, it does continue to outstrip all other industrial nations in comp;agency. Michael Alexander tackles the perils of smugness. he shows that neither our present nor our likely future is as bright as our leaders like to assure us it is. Puncturing the ten comforting myths by which Canadians live, he tells us how we will have to change in order to reach our full potential both as a nation and as individuals."
—Clifford Orwin, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Program in Political Philosophy and International Affairs, University of Toronto

"Michael Alexander cares deeply about Canada and has devoted much effort and considerable talent and energy to providing a thorough and penetrating analysis of Canadian political culture. This important book deserves an audience of thoughtful people who accept their serious responsibility to be informed citizens and to engage in publish debate regarding these issues that impact the future prosperity of us all."
—Dr. James Breech, President, Cougar Global Investments, Toronto

"Having known Michael Alexander since our days at Columbia Law School, he has the sharp intellect, eclectic insight and academic pedigree to attack some of Canada's most sacred cows, from multiculturalism to 'the best place to live' mantra. He argues persuasively that the pertinent question for Canada is not what we are, but what we can become."
—Richard J. Goossen, CEO, M&A Capital Corp., Vancouver, author of The Greatest Thinkers on Entrepreneurship

            Book Description

Personality Selling is a unique and long overdue concept for understanding the art of influence. It is the first book to combine the most powerful psychological models in use today - Neuro-Linguistic-Programming (NLP), Ericksonian Hypnosis, and the Enneagram personality typing system - with traditional selling techniques to show you how to apply the golden rule of selling: "Sell unto others the way they want to be sold to."

Personality Selling acts as a map that allows the reader to get inside the head of others and recognize the seemingly random and often mysterious aspects of the many personalities we meet. Personality Selling describes such things as; NLP personality traits, the nine personality types of human nature, how the mind makes associations, the structure of rapport, the power of language, and the impact of physiology. It also examines the basics of selling using a powerful psychological approach to gathering information, tailoring presentations, handling objections, and recognizing the various ways people make decisions. It also includes a comprehensive section on the psychology and tactics of negotiation. Through extensive use of experiential language and examples, the reader can actually experience the impact different approaches can have on others so they can fine tune their selling style to achieve success.

5 out of 5 stars Personality Selling : Using NLP and the Enneagram to Understand People and How They Are Influenced.......2006-03-16

One of the best books that I read on Selling and NLP. However, it is of advantage to have some idea about NLP and the Enneagram. But that's what the title already presupposes, anyway

            4 out of 5 stars Good Straight-Forward Tools.......2005-09-23

I just took a 3 week intensive Practitioner's Certification training course in California with Robert Dilts and I found this book to be really helpful with "people reading". I found some information we really didn't have time to go into in CA in this book. It is written cleanly and clearly on subjects that can be complex. I recommend it to anyone studying NLP for any reason.

            3 out of 5 stars The Enneagram.......2004-10-25

If you have already read books on NLP and selling, you won't get anything new out of it. It gets three stars because it introduces the enneagram and correlates the meta-programs to it, and that's something quite interesting.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to understand NLP READ THIS BOOK.......2004-05-20

If you want NLP to make practical sense and apply it then this book is a must. The author clearly has an in depth grasp of NLP, the Enneagram and selling. Filled with practical examples, tips for influencing all personality types, and how to tie different psychological models together, this book is a must for everyone whether in sales or just trying to understand and get along with the people in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Distinctions that make the difference........2003-12-06

It is clear that Valentino has fluid experience with NLP in the real word. The distinctions he makes can only come from practical application. Valuable insight brought out in a well written book.

From the supplier: A Massachusetts law that imposes a 10% penalty on bids and contracts from companies that do business with Burma has been declared unconstitutional by federal court judge Joseph Tauro. Ruling in a case filed by the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), Tauro ruled that the law infringed on the federal government's right to regulate foreign affairs. The NFTC case, which had the support of European Union, will move on to the federal appeals court which may choose to affirm or reverse Tauro's ruling on the right of a state to impose sanctions against companies that do business with Burma.
