In the early 1980s, R.F. Engle pioneered the econometric technique of Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (ARCH), which has subsequently generated a very considerable literature. This collection brings together the leading papers which have shaped ARCH research from its inception to the latest developments. Papers present both theory and financial market analysis, and discuss the key issues in the use of ARCH models to study volatility and correlation: - what model to use - what time intervals to employ - how to model multivariate systems - how to apply the models to price and trade options - how to model volatility spillovers across markets and within the day For each of these issues, the selection of a number of papers by different authors allows a variety of viewpoints to emerge. Many applications to financial markets are included, and a new introduction by the editor connects the papers to trace the development of the field. the result is a timely, useful book which will bring graduate students, faculty, and practitioners up to date on this rapidly expanding field of research.

A collection of the most important papers in ARCH literature.......2001-08-27

R.F. Engle invented the ARCH model (1982). Since then, such models (the original ARCH and a plethora of cousins inspired by Engle's.) appear every time you deal with heteroscedasticity problems. Being one of the most important developments of the last 20 years, every manual dealing with that is welcome. As the title suggests, this one is a collection of the most important papers of the ARCH literature. You'll find among others, the original Engle's paper presenting the ARCH, Bollerslev paper proposing the GARCH, Engle, Lilien and Robins ARCH-M paper, and many others dealing with their stationarity, the advantages of being good diffusion approximations, many empirical studies (stock returns and its volatility, exchange rates, etc...) and semi-parametric ARCH models. I can't deny the utility of the manual (If you are able to read the whole book, you'll understand pretty well the ARCH theory), but be warned, you won't have the very latest developments, the ones that appeared during the 90 decade (I recommend, in that case, to buy "Non-Linear time series models in empirical finance", by Franses and van Dijk). All the articles here appeared in specialized econometric journals; Robert Engle chooses the most important ones. This book is good, but you should be aware that some of the articles are particularly difficult as the ones written by Nelson, a brilliant econometrician. I think undergraduate students won't appreciate the book, it's pretty hard; even graduate students not specialized in econometrics will have problems. It's a book for those knowing already something about ARCH, the others, if they want to learn, should start somewhere else. I propose James D. Hamilton book or, a simpler one, Enders manual.

Synergistic Communication is a Win/Win book........2002-07-05

I am a business executive and have been a collegiate professor of business administration. Over the years I have read, evaluated, and used a number of books to teach business courses. The Art of Synergistic Communication is one of the best books I have read! It is a down to earth approach that enables you to use a win/win communication strategy.

The number one problem in business is in fact communication. The art of communication can be complex and at times mystifying. But this book provides the concepts and strategies necessary to be successful in business communications. And it provides those tools in a straightforward, simplistic manner.

The author clearly wanted the journey to be enjoyable. I have always believed that business can be fun and exciting! This book is fun to read because it is written for the reader. I highly recommend this book.

Rare Insight.......2001-09-10

This is the only book I've seen that applies scientific principles to personal growth. I've known Thomas Fields for many years and have seen his principles at work. Anybody would admire, if not envy, his professional and personal accomplishments. There is never any question that he will do what he starts out to do, or at least fail in a way that could not have been foreseen. His success is based on the ideas in this book. These strategies rely on rationale thinking, not voodoo. Reading the book caused me to examine my own project planning methods and gave me inspiration (and a framework) to do better. What's especially rare is that a personal growth book should be written with such absolute clarity. I think this book is going to make a positive difference in many lives.

I have been reading similar books (including the secret), but as the little red start sticker says on the book "Secret beyond the secret" is true.
I truly understood what Mr. Wattles talks about and this is the first time I really thought of it and said "AHA" thats how it works!
Well worth the read, one of my favorite books I re-read every month!!!

Though the author was not rich in the traditional sense, He does present an interesting view of what it is to be rich. The book is worth reading.

Great book if you are interested in the inspiration behind The Secret. To think that the author wrote the book in 1910 just goes to show that The Secret isn't really a Secret at all but rather a philosophy which has been part of human consciousness for a very long time. Sadly for Wallace D. Wattles he died very soon after writing the book, so I gather it didn't work for him!

A good read and absolutely right on!.......2007-05-27

Wattles died in 1911, yet he writes about space travel, electric cars, energy from wind and sun,and microwave technology. Hygenic health practices and organic farming are also mentioned. I want to know more about this guy! He writes with a good sense of humor and his ideas work. Now I know what I was doing wrong and the changes he suggests made the difference--my bank account is growing and I'm buying a vacation home!

Can there be any truth to the concepts expressed in this book originaly published in the early 1900"s? I read it a while back and still find myself thinking about the alternative theories expressed in the book ... and recycled in a thousand and one personal motivation books since.

Don't be fooled, this book is difficult to read and comprehend. However, for those willing to tread the waters of early 1900s writing styles, the message in this book is wonderful and can potentially change your life.

If you are interested in the money aspect of the law of attraction, you may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsworth.

The "Thinking Stuff" which Wallace Wattles declares, permeates the universe really caught my attention. The noted theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg refers to this "Thinking Stuff" as the Divine Wisdom in the book Divine Love and Wisdom, (published in Amsterdam in 1763).

I agree with the premise of Wattles book and as I reflect upon my life I can see where the Lord has indeed blessed me in ways I had desired.

Doesn't Work.......2005-09-16

Wattles' philosopy is New Thought, popular at the turn of the 19th century. It is really just wishful thinking or magical thinking. It doesn't work. Just because you think something doesn't make it come true, and you should be glad, because some people think very unpleasant things. You aren't Harry Potter, and magical thinking won't get you what you want in life. As for Monism or the theory that God is in everything, that would mean that God also exists in evil things, which would mean that God is not all good, so Monism cannot be true. This is just an early self-help book that seeks to empower people who feel powerless by telling them they can get anything they want if they just think about it hard enough and long enough. It's a waste of your time. Wattles wrote the same thing about health, and he died at about age 51. If he had lived to be 100 in good health and been a multimillionaire himself, he theories would be more credible. In fact, one of the people Wattles criticized as being "competitive", John D. Rockefeller, did live to be 98 and was a multmillionaire, so who are you going to believe?

This book is inspiring to me because it gives me hope in everything. The concept of an unlimited supply of everything, no matter what, is awesome. The concept of "Thinking Stuff" that premeates, penetrates and fills the inner spaces of the universe, to use in creating by thought.

I have read this book many times. The reason I keep re-reading it is because it reminds me that there is always enough, there is never a lack and what I can do to make a difference.

It also reminds me what powerful beings we are for positive experiences and creation.

Obviously written about the turn of the century. If you can get past the outdated lingo and examples, the meat of the text is rich and rewarding. Women be warned, it was written in a time that we were not considered citizens. Again, if you can get past the lingo, the text is well worth the read.

I have long experienced aspects of this teaching without ever realizing it. When you finally get into the whys and hows of this idea, you too should see very clearly what I am suggesting.

I particularly like the references to Christ and his teachings. It may seem contrary at first, stick to it. Jesus told us we could do these things if we only had the slightest bit of faith.

I am a huge Secret fan & good thing Byrne only took a few excerpts from this book/CD otherwise we would have people depressed convinced they are a failure. Not enlightening, not inspiring.
