Consumption matters to everyone, arguably more than ever before. This up-to-date selection of papers considers some of the key changes in the patterning and social significance of consumption. It is based on a recent series of ESRC funded seminars (1994-96) involving sociologists, social anthropologists, and policy researchers.As well as reporting on recent empirical studies, an extended introduction is provided, and future directions for social scientific research, especially sociological research, are discussed. Among the issues considered are: the privatization and marketization of welfare state services; class, gender, ethnicity, and consumption; the consumption of education, Christmas and vitamins; consumption and identity; the consumption of the past; and the influence of Bourdieu on the sociology of consumption.

Included are time management techniques for one's personal work habits, techniques for work routines involving other staff members, and techniques for library administrators. Cochran, a law library administrator focuses on effectiveness (doing the right job) rather than efficiency (doing a job right). The major topics include setting goals and objectives for one's personal and professional life that support one's values, planning and scheduling work each day, fighting procrastination, limiting interruptions, planning effective meetings, delegating effectively, building morale, and cultivating creativity. Other chapters cover time management techniques for special situations including travel and lunch time, balancing a career and personal life, and implementing a time management training program in a library. The Time Management Handbook for Librarians provides many valuable time management techniques and tips for library professionals. The author, Wesley Cochran, is a law library director and has taught time management workshops for librarians. The end result is a book that does a good job of taking time management techniques and applying them to libraries.

This time management handbook does not only cover personal time management techniques, but it covers techniques for working with others, and techniques for library administrators. The last two chapters briefly describe balancing career with ones personal life and how to implement a time management plan.

The focus is not so much on saving time as it is to decide ahead of time what goals are most important to accomplish. Having goals and objectives in place librarians can then create a daily plan of action that allows them to work on high priority items first. This will help librarians avoid time wasters such as procrastination, taking on too much, and not being able to say no. Other good tips mentioned were setting aside uninterrupted quiet time everyday, deciding which time of day you are most productive, how to plan effective meetings, and how to delegate effectively.

The Time Management Handbook does what other time management books don't, apply time management to a library setting. However, this book does not explain how to implement a time management plan in great detail. Concepts of planning, goal setting, and implementing time management techniques are not mentioned in depth. Instead the book provides a helpful framework for effective time management.

El libro es estupendo y me ha enseñado muchas cosas respecto al dinero. Creo que todos deberian leerlo. Le di un puntaje de 3 ya que, como hispanohablante y traductora, se me hizo dificil de leer en su version española. La traduccion suena a eso: una traduccion. Asimismo, note una cantidad un tanto alarmante de faltas de ortografia y errores gramaticales. Este libro se habria beneficiado de una edicion minuciosa. En fin, se puede leer si no hay mas remedio. De otro modo, recomiendo que lean su version original en ingles. (NOTA: Escribo sin acentos porque siempre se joroban :).

Recent years have seen a number of initiatives which seek to provide a range of community services on school sites, including adult education and other social and welfare services. These developments aim at co-ordinating more effectively services whichare usually provided separately while optimizing the use of increasingly sophisticated and expensive educational buildings and equipment. However, providing integrated services "under one roof" poses a number of practical problems. What is the rationale for integrated service provision? What are the implications for the local authorities, planners and architects in charge of designing school sites that meet the new requirements? This report presents the main lessons learned from a conference held in Stockholm, drawing on case studies from Finland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Quebec, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
