A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2007-02-19
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Customer Reviews:
A very cheap education, worth 10 times the price!.......2007-06-08
If you are looking for a book that will tell you what kind of corporate entity you should put your company in, this is as close as you're going to get.
The bad news is, you will still want to hire an attorney to set up the corporation for you. The biggest benefit with the book is, you will not have to have the attorney spend his time (at $200+ and hour)explaining to you what the differences are from one type of entity to the next. After reading this book, you should be pretty much up to speed, with maybe one or two additional questions needing to be asked.
So, let's review: read a book, four hours and less than twenty bucks. Listen to an attorney: one hour, $200. Having done the math, I chose to read the book. Unless your business has too much money on its hands (in which case, I'll take some of it!) all of us corporate executive wannabes should read this book! :-)
This is a good overview of corporations for individuals.......2007-05-14
I found this to be a good overview of corporations usage for individuals. It has certain tilt to using Utah corporations that may be biased by the author's home state. But the insights offered are valid business considerations. The author's views should be discussed together jointly with your accountant and attorney.
Own Your Own Corporation.......2007-03-09
I realy got some good out of this book and I recommend to anybody doing their own business.
Good job.
own your own corp........2007-02-20
Perfect for the bigger businesses, but I'm not going to need this book for a few more years. Until then, it'll sit on my book shelf and wait for me to grow. I skimmed through it and it seemed very well put together.
Good business info.......2007-02-17
Typical of Kiyosaki's Rich Dad series, this book delivers a sound business concept in an easy to read format. Kiyosaki encourages us to create corporation, specifcally Nevada based corps, to achieve our financial goals and protect our assets from litigation and our income from taxes. This book also expands on the idea of being a business owner, as in the B quadrant of the Cashflow quadrant.
I also recommend you read "The Richest Man in Babylon," by George Clason, adn "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.
Book Description
Today, the industrial world is experiencing the most revolutionary change since Henry Ford's assembly line -- which forever changed the way things are made. Japanese companies are sweeping the world, as Western companies and governments struggle to find ways to emulate them.
The Machine That Changed the World points for the first time to a positive way out of this dilemma. It shows that being defeatist about the Japanese threat, and tougher protectionism, are not the answers.
This book outlines the enormous tasks facing Western companies in the 1990s and has cogent messages for Japanese firms as well, as they move abroad.
The Machine That Changed the World is based on the largest and most thorough study ever undertaken in any industry: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology five-million-dollar, five-year, fourteen-country International Motor Vehicle Program's study of the worldwide auto industry.
Twice in this century the auto industry has changed our most fundamental ideas about how to make things. Now it is doing it again. Just as mass production swept away craft production, so a new way of making things, called lean production, is now rapidly making mass production obsolete.
Lean production is the Japanese secret weapon in the industrial wars and is spreading throughout the world. If Western companies and their managers and workers are to survive in the 1990s, they must learn and adapt to lean production. Some of the smartest already have begun to do so.
Lean production welds the activities of everyone from top management to line workers, to suppliers, into a tightly integrated whole that can respond almost instantly to marketing demands from consumers. It can also double production and quality, while keeping costs down. Its adoption, as it inevitably spreads beyond the auto industry, will change almost every industry and consequently how we work, how we live, and the fate of companies and nations as they respond to its impact.
In clear and compelling terms, this book explains what lean production is, and its global implications for all of us.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, but dated and perhaps a little too fawning.......2007-01-23
The title sets the tone the authors carry throughout the book. A little too much glorifying. A little too much hype. Yes, what Toyota and others did was impressive. But no, they did not change the world. In my opinion, not even close.
And this book is dated. In fact, though written in the early '90s, it reads more like many of the books written about Japanese management in the early '80s. Books like "Japan As Number One." Or "Trading Places." At the time, the Japanese were thought to be able to do no wrong.
Now, of course, we know that Japanese executives and managers are mere mortals too. Toyota has certainly done better than most Japanese companies over the last 15 years. And part of the reason -- a big part probably -- has been the effectiveness of their management in areas like lean production. But even without the benefit of the hindsight we now have, the authors of this book should have realized that their unstinted praise was not warranted. Even for the brains behind Toyota.
Still, this book is the best I have found on the history of the "Industry of Industries." It traces the history of the automobile industry from craft production to mass production to lean production. No other book I have read has done that so well.
And for an academic book, The Machine That Changed the World is easy to read. It keeps a careful balance between informing the reader and keeping the reader's interest. Most writers, particularly of works like this, tilt too much one way or the other. Either too dry and pedantic or too light and entertaining. A happy medium is hard to achieve.
Where does the auto industry go from here? Lean production is no longer exceptional. It has become the rule. But it seems to have run its course.
The future of the automobile industry may lie in "collaborative production." Major automakers concentrate on sales and service, not production. Suppliers develop specialized skills in technologies from hybrid power trains to drive-by-wire control systems. And everyone sells to everyone else. Technology becomes less important than brand.
If that is the case, Toyota may still lead the pack. In Business Week's list of the top 100 global brands, Toyota leads all carmakers at number 7. No one has caught Toyota napping on the increasing importance of brand.
Even so, Toyota fiercely defends the idea that is a motor company, not a sales company. Innovative technology and excellent manufacturing have been much more of a focus than sales. Will it be able to adapt if the industry does change?
An interesting question that we should see answered in the next few years. Like many good history books, The Machine That Changed the World gives us hints as to what that future will be.
The evolution of the business world.......2006-01-11
A visiting professor recommended this book when I asked him about the LEAN philosophy. What is great about this book is how it introduces the birth of not only the LEAN concept, but also the MASS PRODUCTION which preceded and still dominates the world of manufacturing. With its timeline based structure, this book shows how and why the complex automotive industry is changing to LEAN. All other industries tend to follow...
Understanting the Toyota Way.......2004-02-22
Since the beginning of the 50's, Toyota has been a making a revolution in the way corporation works. A real unique approach named lean has been allowing the company to achieve superior performance concurrently in manufacturing, product development and suppliers management. The Machine brings to the reader a wide explanation of "Toyota Way". If you are looking for a book about Lean and you'd like to understand Toyota, it certainly should be your first choice!
The beauty of thinking.......2003-11-18
This book should be read by every business student. It is a perfect summary of 20th century's industrial development.
This book also provides a perfect insight to large scale academic programs and reseachs. Every student reading this book will gain much more than taking 2 or 3 courses in an MBA program. This book has much to offer than any of the books that I have read. It makes you think and then gives the answers and at the end it presents with you issues to think further.
Mistake.......2002-06-19
The Machine that Changed the World has been published more than once. Amazon, you're offering a special "buy these 2 titles, and save", but they are the exact same book.
Book Description
The field of electronic commerce has grown rapidly over the past few years. Major corporations and even small businesses are using electronic commerce as a channel of distribution. This growth has led to the need for business students to understand the security, risk management, and control issues related to electronic commerce.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview of Security Issues.......2002-10-22
Greenstein and Feinman's "Electronic Commerce Security, Risk Management and Control" presents a nice overview of the major security issues and ways to address them.
The book in particular focuses on security applications for the accounting industry so accountants in particular should find this text worthwhile. However, the book is still relevant to all fields and industries that are looking to get in on the e-business revolution.
Here are the topics Greenstein and Feinman address:
1. The Role of Third Parties
2. The Regulatory Environment: Cryptography and International Laws, Libel Laws, Domain Name Disputes
3. EDI, E-Commerce and the Internet
4. Risks of Insecure Systems: Data Interception, Social Engineering, Sabotage by Current/Former Employees, DoS attacks, Viruses
5. Risk Management: Managing Security Gaps, Culture Management, Disaster Recovery Plans
6. Internet Security Standards: Standards Organizations, Security Protocols
7. Cryptography and Authentication: Encryption Techniques, Public and Private Keys,
8. Firewalls
9. Payment Mechanisms: SET, SSL, Smart Cards
10. Intelligent Agents
11. Web-Marketing
Overall, Greenstein and Feinman do a fine job of covering the various technologies and issues that deal with security in e-business. This book was used as a text for an e-commerce security course I took during the summer of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, Greenstein and Feinman's "E-Commerce Security, Risk Management and Control" is a decent choice.
Highly Recommended
Financial risk management.......2002-04-04
This book is great if you are reading it to complete financial statements audit. The author is linking electronic commerce with financial risk. Some audit procedures are proposed to manage these risk. In general, the book is from a manager point of view and you always find an accountant/auditor point of view at the end of each chapter.
Useful but boring.......2000-10-05
I'm using this course for a business class in ecommerce. It was the best book I could find at the time (May 2000). I like the coverage and the approach (not too technical) but, oh my gawd, it doesn't read well. Long convoluted sentences. Diagrams that don't always communicate much. On the plus side, if you're an accountant, this is the probably the best ecommerce book around.
