This is a "must have" for any Family and Consumer Sciences teacher just starting out. Yes there are still new people coming into the field. This book contains much information on various topics such as behavioral objectives, running labs, activities, bulletin boards, and much much more. I was lucky enough to find one in a used book store. It is currently out of print but it wouldn't hurt to keep requesting a check on the book. You never know, the author may just decide to put out a new edition if there are enough requests. :)

            Book Description

`Globalisation is a new phenomenon in our economic history. The way our service economy responds to this mega trend is largely unknown. This volume brings together a unique collection of original studies on trading services in a global economy. They all open up new horizons of refreshing insights in a complex phenomenon.'

            - Peter Nijkamp, Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

`This is an outstanding compilation of new materials by some of the leading authors in this field. They demonstrate fundamental understanding of the issues and provide a penetrating perspective that can only be fully appreciated by those with a global viewpoint.'

            - Kingsley E. Haynes, George Mason University

This book provides one of the first interdisciplinary reviews of the relationship between services, globalization and trade liberalization as we enter the twenty-first century. Written by academics and policymakers, it contains a detailed analysis of the characteristics of service trade and of recent and current service trade negotiations.

The authors focus on exploring the complex relationship between the process of globalization and the globalization of services, taking into consideration service trade negotiations. Many service functions reduce the relative distance between places and enable the process of globalization. The globalization of service functions is complex. Services are different from goods as they depend on human capital (embodied knowledge and reputations) and have to be localized to meet specific cultural and political requirements. The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) needs to be informed by an understanding of the differences that exist between goods and services as well as by the processes by which services globalize. The GATS has to be more than just about quantitative-based policies but also has to explore national regulations that inhibit trade in services.

This book will be of special interest to economists, geographers and policy makers with a specific involvement in service trade and trade liberalization.

The reader will learn how to gain at least two to four more productive and enjoyable hours a day at work and at home. Panella contends that behaviors drive our actions, and our actions determine our success. Other time-management methods focus only on the development of organizational and scheduling skills and leave most people frustrated and with little extra time in the long run. By adjusting simple habits and behaviors, as Panella outlines in this book most people find they hav emore time to work with and that they can make time work in their favor.

This Twenty Six Hour Day Is Not Fiction! A Book Review
                  by Mike Banks Valentine

Vince Panella might have been accused of writing a work of
fiction when titling his book "The 26 Hour Day, How to Gain
at Least 2 Hours a Day with Time Control". When he begins
his "Introduction to Time Control" chapter by stating on the
first page that he's . . . "come to the conclusion that --
time management does not work!" he immediately had me hooked.

I was charmed by the intensely human approach he takes from
the beginning. I've got to agree with him because my own
experience with time management is that it has a mechanistic,
almost robotic feel to it as presented by efficiency experts,
management consultants and minutia-charting time accountants.
Here is an approach that allows for "wasting time" and, even
more surprisingly, advocates getting sufficient sleep!

Although he suggests wasting incrementally less time than you
normally might he is clearly aware that as human beings, we
are driven less by deadlines than by emotional needs. At least
once in every chapter, reminding the reader that we are not
perfect and that it's OK that we're not precise as robots.

Panella blends the best of self improvement with his unique
approach to what he calls "Time Control", quoting personal
growth gurus Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra beside references
to American Statistician, W. Edwards Deming, the man who was
". . . given credit for engineering Japan's modern industrial
success over the last 50 years." Deming guided Japanese
business through a formula of continual success improvement.

Constant incremental refining of success formulas is certainly
not limited to Deming. One of my strongest early inspirations
was reading "The Autobiography of Ben Franklin", in which the
continual improvement of Franklin's character throughout his
life is chronicled. Self improvement predated Franklin as well,
but Panella has combined the best of personal growth with time
control to offer what he has called "Success Centered Time
                  Management."

Although Panella does cover critical topics typical to time
management such as standard issue and admittedly important -

                  * Winning the War Against Procrastination
                  * The Power and Purpose of Goals
                  * Reducing Distractions

Those key points are presented in ways that kept my interest,
a surprising accomplishment in itself. But Panella has some
more compelling thoughts on some new approaches he has refined
over his nearly 20 years of presenting this material. Notable
are several concepts that resonate strongly with humanity.

                  * Gain 2 More Hours a Day Through the Power of Sleep

As one with sleep apnea disorder, I require more sleep than
most, but Panella boldly proclaims that, "Lack of adequate
sleep is the reason for 90 percent of the problems many of
us experience in gaining more control of our time."

He makes a strong case for a society that values sleep far
more than does ours. He goes so far as to cite a Gallup poll
that showed "Twenty-Five percent of adults believe they
cannot be successful AND get enough sleep!" He gives ample
reasons, from reduced productivity and performance right on
through loss of life caused by drowsiness and inattention.

                  * Bit by Bit, The Amazing Power of Five Minutes

This section emphasizes devoting a simple five minutes to
gradual progress toward seemingly huge goals on a daily
basis. Slow and steady wins the race might describe this
approach. He refers to this technique throughout the book
in varied ways to suggest that progress doesn't have to be
measured in tireless devoted hours of struggle, but can be
achieved much more easily "bit by bit."

                  * Moments, The Secret of Life

As a teenager, I wondered what my life might look like as
a two hour movie and imagined what little slices of time
might make it to the final cut (as I experienced one of my
first identity crises upon finishing high school). Panella
suggests that all of our lives are much like that and are
defined by individual moments of positive accomplishment
and that all lives are made up of a collection of small
moments we strongly identify with and remember powerfully.

The striking concept he delivers in the book is that we
not only have that inventory of past moments, but that we
should consider steadily depositing in a bank account of
moments from each day, and further, that we consider
investing to accumulate a wealth of moments. "Every day,
consciously look to create significant and simple moments"
to add to your "moments account".

                  * Maximizing Any Experience

"Before any event or experience . . . simply ask yourself
how prepared you are . . . for the event. You'll go through
details in your head and take a subjective measurement . . .
Then you'll ask yourself what you can do to make the event
a little better ahead of time. You'll repeat asking this
                  question . . . listing your answers . . . When complete,
you'll have a laundry list of actions to maximize the
event . . . You get to play armchair quarterback ahead of
time. You pull yourself back and look at the big picture
with a chance to make positive changes. Something we fail
to do more times than not."

"Maximizing almost seems too easy." Indeed it does, but
what a powerful tool if we only developed the habit.

The 26 Hour Day, I'm convinced, is a real possibility
in terms of maximising events, investing in our moments
with sincere gratitude and bit by bit, in multiple five
minute increments, we can gain additional value from our
                  alloted time.

Vince Panella has unwittingly given me the blueprint for
my New Years Resolutions for 2002. I'm committed to
investing significant time to his program of continual
success improvement over the coming year.

                        Book Description

With more than 200 million people online and their numbers on the rise, growing also is a perceived threat to personal privacy. A trend toward consumer protective legislation is developing in Europe and shows signs of developing in the U.S. Frye examines the new online environment, the national and international legislative scenarios that could affect the way online business is done, and proposes steps that would allow organizations to determine the policies best for themselves within privacy-enhanced environments. He lays out the privacy interests and concerns of Internet users in the context of privacy laws in Europe, Canada, and the U.S. Then, without demonizing or lionizing them, he looks impartially at how corporations could and might have to function under a variety of likely legislations. Frye's book, among the first to attempt the task, is a timely, much needed advisory--and warning--for top echelon executives in the public and private sectors both, particularly in marketing and sales, areas where privacy activists are concentrating their efforts. It is also an important source of information and thought for academics and their graduate-level students. Frye introduces the Internet as a social and technological phenomenon by recounting briefly the early days of its predecessor, ARPANet. In the next chapters he fills in the policy background from a legal standpoint, explaining the thrust toward privacy that emerged through Supreme Court and lower court decisions. He then examines Internet economics, and from there turns to Internet-based advertising. He also covers the controversy over "cookies" and shows what Web users can do to visit Web sites without leaving "crumbs." He introduces the infomediary, a type of organization that could allow consumers to maintain anonymity while still granting businesses access to detailed demographic and behavioral information. Frye describes a range of scenarios that could be played out over the next decade and offers specific steps that organizations can take to improve consumer confidence, maintain the flow of information they need, yet still demonstrate their compliance with consumer expectations as well as the law. Two appendices contain the full text of two documents vital to senior managers mapping their own corporate strategies: the European Union Data Directive and an EU Work Paper on the use of contracts to ensure the security of personally identifiable information that is transferred from the EU to other countries, such as the U.S., that lack their own adequate protections.

                          Book Description

The services industries—which include jobs ranging from flipping hamburgers to providing investment advice—can no longer be characterized, as they have in the past, as a stagnant sector marked by low productivity growth. They have emerged as one of the most dynamic and innovative segments of the U.S. economy, now accounting for more than three-quarters of gross domestic product. During the 1990s, 19 million additional jobs were created in this sector, while growth was stagnant in the goods-producing sector.

Here, Jack Triplett and Barry Bosworth analyze services sector productivity, demonstrating that fundamental changes have taken place in this sector of the U.S. economy. They show that growth in the services industries fueled the post-1995 expansion in the U.S. productivity and assess the role of information technology in transforming and accelerating services productivity. In addition to their findings for the services sector as a whole, they include separate chapters for a diverse range of industries within the sector, including transportation and communications, wholesale and retail trade, and finance and insurance.

The authors also examine productivity measurement issues, chiefly statistical methods for measuring services industry output. They highlight the importance of making improvements within the U.S. statistical system to provide the more accurate and relevant measures essential for analyzing productivity and economic growth.

                            Book Description

Agricultural Productivity: Measurement and Sources of Growth addresses measurement issues and techniques in agricultural productivity analysis, applying those techniques to recently published data sets for American agriculture. The data sets are used to estimate and explain state level productivity and efficiency differences, and to test different approaches to productivity measurement. The rise in agricultural productivity is the single most important source of economic growth in the U.S. farm sector, and the rate of productivity growth is estimated to be higher in agriculture than in the non-farm sector. It is important to understand productivity sources and to measure its growth properly, including the effects of environmental externalities. Both the methods and the data can be accessed by economists at the state level to conduct analyses for their own states. In a sense, although not explicitly, the book provides a guide to using the productivity data available on the website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Economic Research Service. It should be of interest to a broad spectrum of professionals in academia, the government, and the private sector.

                            Book Description

Using the growth accounting model proposed by Edward F. Denison in the 1960s, this work analyzes the sources of growth in the postwar Greek economy. The Greek experience is contrasted with that of other countries, and general as well as country-specific causes for the recent slowdown in productivity growth are systematically analyzed. Tsaliki contrasts the 1950-1973 period, in which the growth of output was equally attributable to total input factor and output per unit, with the 1973-1985 period, in which growth of productivity became negative, and the contribution of capital diminished significantly while that of labor reached record high levels. Explanations for these patterns are proposed and compared with those of other countries. The work begins with an introductory chapter that compares Greece's growth rate of output with that of other industrial nations and presents the structural characteristics of the postwar Greek economy. The following chapters then lay out the theoretical foundations of the author's model of the economy and present the income shares corresponding to factors of production, labor input, and adjustments needed to derive an accurate estimate of growth. Capital and its contribution to growth is examined by separating its different constituent components, and the importance of domestic, foreign, and public investment is analyzed. The contribution of land, dwellings, and international assets is also discussed, and the summary findings regarding the factors of contribution to the growth rate are thoroughly explained. The work concludes with analyses of various effects on the growth rate of output per unit of input, as well as comparisons of the Greek experience to the U.S. economy. This volume will be a useful tool for scholars and courses in international and economic development, economic policy and theory, and comparative economic systems. It will also serve as a valuable resource for public and academic library collections.

                              Book Description

Growth patterns through the 1990s and into this decade have turned received wisdom on its head. For most of the post-war period OECD countries with relatively low GDP per capita grew faster than richer countries. In the 1990s this pattern broke down. Most notably, the United States, which, already with a relatively high level of GDP per capita among the world's major economies, drew further ahead of the field from the second half of the 1990s onwards. The growth performance of much of continental Europe remains comparatively weak and Japan remains mired.

What are the root causes of the divergence in growth across the OECD? How much of it can be attributable to new technology and R&D? What role has macroeconomic policy played? How important is education and training? Are unemployment, labour market flexibility and product market competition important influences? Do business start-ups help bring new capital and ideas to markets? How important are the barriers to business start-up and closure? This publication provides a comprehensive overview of these issues and new insights on what drives economic growth in OECD countries.

                                Book Description

Over the past couple of decades there have been surges in productivity in a number of countries, in particular in the UK under the Thatcher government. Explanations of these changes have not been satisfactory. This book examines, for the first time, the data relating to these changes at an individual establishment level in a number of countries throughout the world. Using a variety of the most up-to-date methods of analysis, the contributors show that there is no single simple explanation. Changes in competitive conditions, skills, innovation and the growth of small firms all have their part to play, as does the widespread closure of the least productive establishments.

                                    Description:
Standard sources of growth accounts are empty of content because they rely on neoclassical production theory. Rather, analysis can be based on productivity growth equations derived from national income and product accounts (NIPA) accounting conventions and a helpful algebraic identity. These schemes impose valid restrictions on growth rates of the wage rate, profit rate, capital, labor, and their respective average productivities. One states that the output growth rate equals employment growth plus productivity growth. The standard ''convergence'' model basically adds accumulation dynamics to this identity. Replacing the aggregate production function with proper accounting restrictions gives a growth model with detailed results that differ markedly from those of the standard model. Alternative, essentially Kaldorian supply- and demand-based alternatives to sources of growth based on a familiar output growth versus productivity growth diagram with constant employment growth contours added in look like a useful alternative to the mainstream models. With distributive dynamics added in, the model would also generate Goodwin-style cycles.

                                      Description:
Despite a rapidly expanding theoretical and empirical literature emphasising the role of incessant intra-industry restructuring in productivity growth, few studies have gone beyond the framework of the representative firm in examining convergence or divergence in regional productivity. We use unique longitudinal plant-level data over a long period of time and apply a useful variant of productivity decomposition methods to study differences in productivity-enhancing restructuring within manufacturing industries among Finnish regions. Long-lasting differences in industry productivity growth between Southern and Eastern Finland can be attributed to the ''creative destruction'' components of productivity growth, mainly to the between and entry components.

                                          Description:
The Spanish pharmaceutical industry underwent an important transformation during the 1990s. To survive under the new market conditions, labs had to refocus their competitive strategies towards increasing productive efficiency or reinforcing research and development (R&D) activities. This paper analyzes the evolution of the productive patterns in a sample of 80 pharmaceutical laboratories that operated in Spain from 1994 to 2000. We estimate Malmquist productivity indexes and decompose them into four sources of productivity change. The results suggest that pure technical efficiency change and the scale change of the technology explain most of the productivity growth observed during the period. The contribution of technical change to productivity growth is negligible, indicating a poor result from R&D activities at least in the groups of Small and Medium-sized labs.

                                            Book Description

Time and Poverty in Western Welfare States is the English language adaptation of one of the most important contributions to welfare economics published in recent years. Professors Leibfried and Leisering offer a time-based (dynamic) analysis of the study of poverty, and suggest the need for a radical rethinking of conventional theoretical and policy approaches. Its methodology will make it of great interest to students and researchers in the social sciences, with particular importance for social policy and welfare economics.
