                    Book Description

Why do some organizations learn at faster rates than others? Why do organizations "forget"? Could productivity gains acquired in one part of an organization be transferred to another?
Learning curves have been documented in many organizations, in both the manufacturing and service sectors. The classic learning curve model implies that organizational learning is cumulative and persists through time. However, recent work suggests that firms also demonstrate depreciation of knowledge, or "forgetting". Such understanding becomes more exciting as one looks at the link between learning and productivity.
Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge describes and integrates the results of research on factors explaining organizational learning curves and the persistence and transfer of productivity gains acquired through experience. Chapter One provides an overview of research on organizational learning curves. Chapter Two introduces the concept of organizational "forgetting" or knowledge depreciation. Chapter Three discusses the concept of organizational memory. Chapter Four argues that analyzing small groups provides understanding at a micro level of the social processes through which organizations create and combine knowledge. Chapter Five describes results on knowledge transfer. Chapter Six discusses various tensions and trade-offs in the organizational learning process.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars A tremendous achievement.......1999-09-29

Linda Argote not only summarizes what is know about organizational learning but also integrates her own creative research into the mix. Her research on pizza franchises is legendary, and in this book she shows why. Using innovative methods in shipyards, truck factories, airplane factors, pizza shops, and elsewhere, Argote derives propositions and puts them to the test.

I particularly liked her discussion of organizational memory and forgetting. What a great notion -- organizations CAN forget things! -- and Argote shows just how quickly that can happen.

This book belongs on the shelf of every scholar and manager interested in how organizations learn (and forget).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for both teaching and research.......1999-08-26

To my knowledge, Linda Argote presents the first multi-level treatment of organizational knowledge and learning. Other authors seem to have chosen to focus their analyses on either knowledge or learning - or, limited their assessments to the individual, group, or organizational level of analysis. Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge provides a more comprehensive and integrative approach. Some authors would argue that knowledge and learning are modern discoveries. Prof. Argote provides an evenhanded assessment of what is new, and what is supported by decades of past research.

I believe this book is appropriate for anyone wanting to understand the basis of our beliefs regarding organizational knowledge and learning. I have just finished using this book as background for a paper on knowledge and virtual teams. I also will be using sections in my MBA course on Organizational Design.

Professional Commerce Server 2000 Programming from Wrox Press is an excellent guide to this powerhouse new product.

One of Commerce Server's strengths is its balance between "out of the box" Web store solutions that build easily with wizards and its extensible architecture that allows programmers to extend and customize sites any way they like. This guide steps the reader through the creation of the basic retail store but quickly gets down to the business of customization. Halfway through the book, the reader will have a good feel for setting up user profile and authentication; customizing the store catalog; configuring promotions, tax tables, and shipping rates; and setting up the order processing pipelines to meet an organization's needs. Plenty of sample code--all of which is downloadable from the publisher's Web site--is included to illustrate customization techniques.

Advanced topics such as content targeting and BizDesk integration are covered in great depth, making this guide a veritable Commerce Server bible you'll turn to time and time again. The book's authors address the sticky issue of migrating Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition stores to Commerce Server--a Herculean task that programmers will have to think about long and hard before attempting--with two separate chapters that focus on moving the Membership Directory and stores respectively.

Commerce Server 2000 is one of the most powerful e-commerce solution tools available. This well-organized guide is perhaps the most powerful documentation you will find for the product. --Stephen W. Plain

                                Book Description

Microsoft Commerce Server 2000 provides a COM-based framework and suite of tools that can help you build and manage effective web sites - in particular e-commerce solutions - on the Windows 2000 platform. It supports catalog management, user profiling, content targeting, and business analytics, as well as providing a component-based 'pipeline' framework to simplify the implementation of linear business logic.

This book explores the most important areas of the Commerce Server 2000 product, taking you through from product installation, and configuring and customizing the ready-made e-commerce solution sites, to low-level application of the component framework, integration with third party components and external systems, and site migration from Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition.

1 out of 5 stars Ridden with too many errors.......2002-07-09

For 16 authors (programmers??) to make so many typos, mistakes, ommissions, is unacceptable. I even sent email to the authors who cared to provide addresses and none responded.

The authors must have been confused or took so much for granted. The problems I found with the book are too many. For example: Code snippets fail, poor steps (making the book a very tidious read.). The steps are embedded in lengthy theories, making them impossible to follow. Focus is lost and references are poor. For example, on page 88, they write "you can find this function [global_service_lib.asp] in the include directory". Wrong because, the global_service_lib.asp resides in the siteroot/service/include directory. These are minute errors that can frustrate many readers in the middle of the night.

Some diligence should be put into books that involve program codes. I generally do not tolerate such errors from programmers. We should be people akin to details!!

This book hasn nothing to rate is as Professional. The book does not give you any thing that is not there in the MS docuentation. It can only be used by person who wants to use the GUI tools provides with Comerce Server. There is no effort made by authors to actually explore the full capacity of Comerce Server objects to leverage the functioanilty. Overall, i don't think it is worth spending $(...) on this book.

                                4 out of 5 stars Good Book........2001-10-19

This is a good point to start developing applications based on Commerce Server. Don't think it's an absolutely complete solution to CS2K issues, but it covers all the topics and it's useful. Better than Help files and CS2K Resource Kit.

                                2 out of 5 stars Sloppy.......2001-10-18

I am only on Chapter 2 and have found at least 5 typographical errors in the text AND the code listings. It is real frustrating to spend so much time trying to understand a topic only to realize that what really was preventing you from understanding was the bugs in the code. You would think that maybe the book is also trying to teach debugging. If Wrox keeps coming out with books that are so poorly edited I will have to look elsewhere for my needs.

2 out of 5 stars At first glance this book seems to be a lamens' saviour........2001-08-22

After going through the steps in this book, you quickly find that this book is just an overview of topics available to the Commerce Server 2000 administrator. There's not enough detail about any one of the subjects to learn how to customize your e-commerce solution.

We used this book in a one semester graduate class for International Economics. We used the book mostly for open economy macro as opposed to trade theory i.e. Chapter 16 & on. Like our professor told us, the book builds on concepts in a gradual fashion starting from the Marshall-Lerner condition right up to the Dornbusch Overshooting Model covering along the way, the basic Keynesian framework, Mundell-Fleming framework and, the policy assignment problem. The concepts helped us trace the causes for UK's renouncement of the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992 (and also how George Soros made his billions!). Using the book in this integrated fashion (Theory + Case Study) makes it a valuable addition to one's library.

Currently I am a student of Professor Jones, one of the text's authors. The text is as drawling and insufficient as Jones' lectures. My first complaint is that there is a crisis of definition. Having only taken one economics course prior, I find that the text tends to move too quickly through topics of international economics, failing to provide illustrative examples so one can better understand how theory is put into practice. Second, the conceptual framework, as in all classical economic theory, is rooted in a place far from reality, a point Jones fails to make clear. The world is not perfectly competitive and does not contain countries equipped with fully developed capitalist institutions (like banking and credit), necessary to make internal economic adjustments in the face of free trade prices. I find the utility of the course to be very low, especially when free-trade is non-existent in the world. Discussions on the state of the contemporary world are sorely needed, if at least to serve as as comparison to the theoretical one constructed by this text. My last complaint is Jones' characterization of "anti-globalizers," those who he claimed "rioted" and were "violent" on the streets of Seatle in 1999 during the meeting of the WTO. The irony is that many of those protesters were advocating for FREER trade, pointing out that US farm subsidies cripple the economies of some underdeveloped nations who primarily produce agricultural commodities. The text's mypopic view of economics will not help those interested in learning how the world economy actually operates.

I found this book to be a very good learning tool, as the course reader for an introductory international economics course. I find that most textbooks are good as reference, not as learning tools, but this book is an exception. In a very concise manner, it builds theory upon theory of international trade, until the student has developed a strong set of analysis tools. The portion on international finance is good intro as well, even though it does not compare with more specialized texts. This text is sufficient to prepare the reader for any advanced trade issues, with the exception of more mathematically based arguments (which the book does not develop, given its focus on beginners).

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, intelligent textbook.......2001-01-15

This textbook for International Economics is a rarity. It's intelligent, exceptionally well written by the experts in the field. It does include a thorough review of the state-of-the-art theory of international trade and finance. To facilitate learning and yet challenge the reader, the authors equipped each chapter with really tough exercises. Only having solved them one might have an impression that he grasped the metarial really well. Good exercises are an indispensable companion of a student. Here we have one of the best I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot. Superior to other textbooks and highly recommended.

                                    Book Description

In this reexamination of Canada's balance of payments experience under the gold standard, the authors develop and empirically test a new portfolio approach to the mechanism of balance of payments adjustment. This adjustment mechanism responded to massive inflows of foreign capital during a critical period of Canada's economic growth in the early years of this century. The authors show that the existence of international mobility of capital requires a fundamental revision of the price-specie-flow theory that has traditionally been used to explain adjustment when the balance of payments was more nearly dominated by the balance of trade. The approach Professors Dick and Floyd take not only answers the critics of Jacob Viner, who first explored the Canadian case after 1900, but also offers a new perspective on how the gold standard in general actually worked. The authors apply standard elementary economic principles to this working of the balance of payments under the gold standard, making this book useful reading for those studying intermediate and upper level economics, especially in the field of international finance.

This book tells the story of credit cards around the world: why people use them, the effects on the economies of the nations where they prevail, why they are used so differently around the world, and what should be done to respond to the problems they cause. It includes a wealth of data from around the world, fascinating narratives about the differences from country to country, and penetrating analyses of policies that might stem misuse of cards.

                                        Book Description

This is a guide to the experiences of economic reform since the Second World War and of system reform and economic integration across the world in the past decade. The first part of the book examines why only a small number of developing countries have succeeded in their modernization attempts this century. What lessons can be learned from the successes of the East Asian NIEs and failures of other economies to emulate them? The very different experiences of the transition to market economies in the former socialist countries of Eastern Europe and China is the focus of the next section, with comparisons drawn to the Latin American reform experience, especially in Chile. The effects of economic integration schemes are examined in the final section, with case-studies of Tunisia and Morocco's Free Trade Agreements with the EU, and economic integration and the Arab-Israeli peace process.

                                                    Book Description

Tanzania has been a recipient of donor aid since the sixties and its relationships with donors have evolved considerably since then. One critical moment was in the early 1980s when donors began to question Tanzania's basic policy framework and management, firstly cutting back aid, and then tying it more directly to policy reforms, which precipitated worsening relations. At the height of this deterioration the Danish government funded an independent group of local and foreign experts to address the problems, primarily the point that Tanzania and Tanzanians no longer owned their policies and projects: and in 2000 the Economic and Social Research Foundation was appointed as an independent broker to co-ordinate further. Professor Wangwe, the editor of this volume, was part of the working group. His book contains The Helleiner Report (1995) and recommendations, which initiated the new phase of monitoring; and records of the subsequent independent assessments made between 1997 and 2000. He presents an individual country's experience of reforming and monitoring aid relationships, with a view to contributing to wider debates about new partnerships in development co- operation within individual countries, and the African continent more widely; in particular within the framework of NEPAD.
