    Book Description

Developed countries, especially in Europe, face a number of issue related to migration: social and economic disruptions caused by the declining demand for unskilled labour and resulting unemployment, a shortage of skilled labour in many professions, increasing international competition for highly qualified human capital, radical demographic changes, and the forthcoming expansion of the European Union, which will trigger further immigration into major European countries and create new market opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe. This suggests a need for a deeper knowledge of the causes and consequences of increased labour mobility. This is especially important when it is associated with tension and fears among native populations. This book brings together analyses of migration issues in major European countries, and compares evidence with more countries that have traditionally seen the most immigration. First, it studies migration streams since World War II, and reviews major migration policy regimes. Second, it summarizes the empirical evidence measuring wages, unemployment, and occupational choices. Third, it investigates how migrants affects the labour markets of their host countries, and evaluates econometric studies into the wage and employment consequences of immigration. Surprisingly, there is wide evidence that immigration is largely beneficial for receiving countries. There might be phases of adjustment, but there is no convincing evidence that natives' wages are depressed or unemployment increases as a consequence of migrant inflow. However, there is a growing impression that migration does serve less and less the needs of the labour market. This suggests a stronger focus on economic channels of immigration, for which the book provides a conceptual basis and the required empirical facts and institutional background.

          Book Description

Stability of International Exchange is a report on the introduction of the gold-exchange standard into China and other silver-using countries.

Originally published in 1903, this was a special report to Congress on the efforts requested by Mexico and China for U.S. cooperation to bring about a fixed relationship between the moneys of the gold-standard countries and the silver-using countries. The subjects covered included the benefits of establishing a gold-exchange standard in China, the adoption of a common ration between the gold unit and the silver coins of countries considering changes in their monetary systems. At the time the United States was strongly pushing for adoption of the gold standard by other countries.

Measures to put an end to the fluctuations of exchange in China appear to be desired equally by the people and Government of China and by the foreign merchants doing business there. The representatives of the Imperial Government, under instructions from Peking, have supported the representatives of the United States and Mexico at the principal capitals of Europe, and assurances of approval of the objects to the Commission have communicated to our minister at Peking.

Great benefits to the trade of the United States and other exporting and manufacturing nations would result from the adoption of a stable exchange in China in place of the fluctuating silver standard upon which her transactions are now conducted.

In submitting the report to Congress, then Secretary of State John Hay said, "The experience of Russia and Japan indicates that the introduction of the gold standard increases foreign trade and the investment of foreign capital, while the importations into China from the United States during the past year have greatly fallen off, partly as the result of the violent fluctuations in silver during this interval."

            Book Description

"A cut above most workplace histories. Looking at the separate but sometimes overlapping development of European and African-American hairdressing from the early twentieth century to the present, Willett shows how race shaped different trajectories for black and white salons."
            —Lingua Franca

"Offers an unusually comprehensive look at a significant twentieth-century industry and female preoccupation"
            —American Historical Review

"Refreshing to read a history so firmly historicized and grounded in working-class and Afro-American history"
            — Journal of Social History

"Carefully nuanced and [a] compelling history."
            — Nan Enstad, The Journal of American History

Throughout the twentieth century, beauty shops have been places where women could enjoy the company of other women, exchange information, and share secrets. The female equivalent of barbershops, they have been institutions vital to community formation and social change.

But while the beauty shop created community, it also reflected the racial segregation that has so profoundly shaped American society. Links between style, race, and identity were so intertwined that for much of the beauty shop's history, black and white hairdressing industries were largely separate entities with separate concerns. While African American hair-care workers embraced the chance to be independent from white control, negotiated the meanings of hair straightening, and joined in larger political struggles that challenged Jim Crow, white female hairdressers were embroiled in struggles over self-definition and opposition to their industry's emphasis on male achievement. Yet despite their differences, black and white hairdressers shared common stakes as battles were waged over issues of work, skill, and professionalism unique to women's service work.

Permanent Waves traces the development of the American beauty shop, from its largely separate racial origins, through white recognition of the "ethnic market," to the present day.

All that this book would be good for is perhaps giving to someone as a present with the intent of offending them (by suggesting that they are not already organized).

This book is basically about using moving averages. The author at times does not recommend using stop loss. Books by Elder + study guide I found to be more useful in money management area. The method is discretionary and is difficult to program into any computer for backtesting to see performance statistics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best futures books I have ever read.......2007-07-26

This book turned my trading around. It took me about 5 reads and I switched back and forth between his other book Intelligent Futures Trading, as they are two different presentations of the same subject, with this book being the more detailed.....(the way the IFT book is written appeals to the left brain-the analytical side, and TDBD is more of the in depth version the right brain would appreciate-if that makes sense). Now that everyone thinks I am sufficiently crazy, I will continue: This book will make alot of people gloss right over it without realizing the true power behind the information presented....the info seems so basic that alot of "experienced traders" will go right past it like it is some kind of cliche book....WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WOULD BE! The problem with most traders is that they want to outcomplicate other traders, or find the secret method or whatever you want to call it. Chick explains in a realistic format that we as individual traders must bring the other competitors down to our level if we wish to succeed. Many people will read this book and not appreciate the information- but that is their problem. This book, along with Chuck Dukas' book and Stan Kroll's books are the best books I have ever read.

However, If I had to pick only one book- this would be the one. Chick is a man of integrity and one would do well to listen to everything he has to say.

It took me almost two years to write this review because I wasn't sure if I even wanted anyone else to know about it! But hey, Chick deserves some recognition for outstanding and extremely generous work he has done.

P.S. I still read his book over and over again-being 375 pages and a large textbook size, there is alot to grasp.....very hard to do all at once.....I suggest to read it, read it again, and then repeat often. I learn something new every single time. But maybe I am just dense.

                5 out of 5 stars Beyond belief.......2006-11-10

What Chick teaches in this book has taken me from being a new trader to a profitable trader in less then one month. Check out his website and review his newsletter. This IS that one way of trading that you have been looking for.
It very well could change your life. It did mine.

Now fully updated, the classic account of how a bottle of sweetened caramel-colored soda water became synonymous with American capitalism

For God, Country and Coca-Cola is the unauthorized history of the great American soft drink and the company that makes it. From its origins as a patent medicine in Reconstruction Atlanta through its rise as the dominant consumer beverage of the American century, the story of Coke is as unique, tasty, and effervescent as the drink itself. With vivid portraits of the entrepreneurs who founded the company-and of the colorful cast of hustlers, swindlers, ad men, and con men who have made Coca-Cola the most recognized trademark in the world-this is business history at its best: in fact, "The Real Thing."

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. You learn a lot about history in general not only the saga of the company. I would hope every business student in college reads this fine work. I was so impressed with the story of the Coca Cola Company that half way through the book I bought some stock. Coca-cola is an interesting company in its development. This book is the best one out of many on how Coca-Cola became what it is today. Even through it is arguably falling apart at the seems you can see how Coke stayed ahead of Pepsi and its early products during the years of development. The book tracks the days when coca-cola was thought of as a medicine. This is a must have for anyone interested in the soft drink industry or American culture as a whole. Very enjoyable and well written. It is the best book on the subject to date and will be very hard to top.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight to the most devine beverage in the world :-().......2006-07-08

Coca-Cola is my 'poison' of choice. I love it so much and it's about all I drink; therefore I have always wanted to know all the details behind the company and the beginning of the beverage itself etc. This book is the best out there for all that you want to know about Coke.
It's very comprehensive (smallish print and over 450 pages (not including the notes and appendixes at the end). From information about the inventor John Pemberton to the marketing of this great soft drink, this is an excellent book to get some understanding into the Coke company and the drink itself. Just be warned; it's a long and hard going read, but if you are truly interested in it, it flows well and you'll get through it easily.

3 out of 5 stars And God Created Coke for Stomach Sufferers........2006-06-24

In May 1886, Coca-Cola hit the market as a soda-fountain patent medicine. Thought to originally contain cocaine from which it took its name, because of its kick. Now 120 years later, they've come up with one formula which has twice the kick. It's an energy drink but is not with the other such type at the grocery. It is stocked with the bottled coffee. It has to grow on you, as did lima beans on me when it was touted to be a favorite of my idol, the star of Coke-time during the Fifties. It was on twice a week in 1953. Coke Blak is addictive.

The folks in Atlanta made a big mistake in March, 1985, when they attempted to change the formula to compete with Pepsi. The Coke lovers persisted and got a form of the original (now called Classic) back on the market (minus the Coke kick). This new blak fusion beverage is definitely a thing apart. Perhaps it has drugs beside coffee added to make it distinctive. Of course, it costs much more than regular Coke, but anything good is expensive, like fancy cars and houses for the rich.

The advertising since the Eighties has hurt Coke's image and now it's just one choice out of many. My son Justin used to bring his friends home to meet Mom, inevitably asking me what I liked to drink; I'd always declare "I prefer Coke." LBJ got holier than thou when he became U. S. President and his "Great Society" (which was anything but!) prompted Robert Woodruff to use blacks in their commercials. That was the demise of Coke's Royal place in the beverage world. Change is not always best, as they learned the hard way when they changed the formula.

For a hundred years almost, Coke was the holy grail which became tarnished as the publicity consistently went down the drain. How much can people in the slums and government projects spend on soft drinks? -- they'd rather spend whetever they have on drugs. Their promise of a stress-free society due to Johnson's abject reasoning (he wasn't the brightest president we ever had and slid into that lofty position when JFK was killed in his home state of Texas) was all a pipe dream.

Even though Coca-cola is now available around the globe, even in the smallest and poorest countries, it's second rate to the "real" Coke of the Fifties. We used to order Cherry Coke at the soda fountain; now their Black Cherry/Vanilla Coke and Dr. Pepper is nauseating. The first formulas for both were meant as a digestive aid. No so today. It has changed so drastically and includes too many forumlas which will be its fall into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a history of Coca-Cola.......2005-12-10

Apart from being the most excellent and comprehensive history of Coca-Cola. It is a most invaluable book for a marketeer, as it chronicles the marketing innovations that Coca Cola pioneered from Liability Insurance, product placement, stress on promotions to point of sale merchandising.

On reading the book one is left with the feeling that Coca-Cola practically invented modern advertising and marketing as we know it.

                  Book Description

Managing the entire environment in which products are conceived, manufactured, transported, stored, marketed, sold, and consumed is the marketing channel orientation to marketing management. Marketing managers will not perform product development and manufacturing functions, but they must be a part of the planning that controls these functions in order to reflect the needs of the marketing channel. How to accomplish this important management task is structured step by step in this comprehensive, instructive and practical book devoted to the development and management of the marketing channel. The book starts with a pragmatic approach to the development of a marketing channel structure, the selection and motivation of channel participants and the adoption of management programs and methods to insure the marketing company can reach its objectives with the greatest efficiency. Section One presents the physical distribution and channel structure section. The second section is dedicated to the presentation of creative management methods, skills and systems of analysis. These methods are presented as a way to plan and implement a successful marketing channel management. The primary, full channel, management focus is directed to product and market management. It includes marketing program development, advertising, promotion, marketing planning, pricing strategies and product positioning. People management and methods of motivation embraces all marketing channel members from manufacturers, wholesalers, agents, and retailers to users or consumers. Special attention is given to key topics such as the management tasks involving the collection and analysis of marketing and sales statistics, forecasting and profit planning methods. Product pricing methods and positioning are also emphasized. Effective alternatives for management action to competitive promotions are directed to all levels of the marketing channel. The special needs of product and market managers, who have accepted broad responsibilities without the authority of position power to accomplish them, are accommodated with the "Manager's Authority Profile." This is a method designed to provide these managers with the power to perform without the risk of conflict. The book concludes with what Paul Harvey would call "the rest of the story." It is about the rest of the marketing channel participants we identify as competitors. The competitive analysis system presented incorporates an outline for the development of a unique competitive profile. It also offers a new competitive market share analysis process. This book is intended to be a complete marketing management reference for the development of physical distribution with the creation and management of marketing programs for the entire marketing channel.

                      Book Description

Regional economic arrangements such as free trade areas (FTAs), customs unions, and currency blocs, have become increasingly prevalent in the world economy. Both pervasive and controversial, regionalization has some economists optimistic about the opportunities it creates and others fearful that it may corrupt fragile efforts to encourage global free trade.
Including both empirical and theoretical studies, this volume addresses several important questions: Why do countries adopt FTAs and other regional trading arrangements? To what extent have existing regional arrangements actually affected patterns of trade? What are the welfare effects of such arrangements? Several chapters explore the economic effects of regional arrangements on patterns of trade, either on price differentials or via the gravity model on bilateral trade flows. In addition, this book examines the theoretical foundation of the gravity model. Making extensive use of the gravity model of bilateral trade, several chapters explore the economic effects of regional arrangements. In addition, this book examines the theoretical foundation of the gravity model.

                        Book Description

This volume explores one important feature of the new global politics--the emerging role of regional systems of relations. The contributors concentrate on key questions: What constitutes a region? How is the historical process of region-formation developing? What are the roles of main state and non-state actors involved? What are the future prospects? The book examines 11 different regions that are coming into existence in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa to show how regionalization is an uneven developing, heterogeneous, and multi-dimensional phenomenon.

                            Book Description

Once torn by ideological conflicts and the dominance of command economies, Southern Africa is now moving towards economic liberalization and openness. In general, the ascendancy of "market economies" is acknowledged by its governments, albeit with different degrees of enthusiasm. Theoretically rich and empirically engaging, this timely book offers a critical insight into the ensuing debate on regionalism and the process of regionalization in region.

While processes of innovation are increasingly realized globally, they can also take a highly regionalized expression. In this book, the global networks that link regions are set against the local aspects of innovation. With contributions from international experts, this book examines local 'Islands of Innovation' where research and industrial expertise are concentrated, along with areas where traditional industrial regions have passed through a process of innovative restructuring.

                                  Book Description

This important new book provides an exhaustive analysis of the strategic responses of transnational firms to current trends in the world economy, specifically the trends towards 'globalization' and 'regionalization'.

The primary focus of this book is on the strategy of transnational firms, particularly those from East Asia, in the geographical regions of Europe, North America and Asia, including the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the ASEAN Free Trade Area. The contributors discuss protectionism and trade agreements, strategic alliances, competitiveness and investment strategy towards Eastern European states and compare business strategies in the triad region. The distinguished contributors are from industry, academia and international organizations and have first-rate, detailed knowledge of the issues raised. Their approach is policy-oriented and they use case studies of Toshiba, Toyota, Samsung and the Notebook PC Consortium to illustrate the investment strategies of East Asian firms.

This book will offer insights to scholars and students seeking to understand East Asian and European firms, the topics of globalization and regionalization. It will also appeal to policy makers wishing to influence and understand the strategies of transnational firms.
