Book Description
At Harvard, tenure decisions are a matter of life -- or death.
For Dennis Gossen, the economics department whiz kid currently being considered for tenure, it's definitely death. When he's turned down by the high-and-mighty Promotion and Tenure Committee, Gossen commits suicide.
A Question of Cost Accounting...
Or does he? It's hard to imagine why a young man with a brilliant scholarly future -- at Harvard or not -- would come up with an equation in which the opportunity cost of killing himself (a high price, considering his potential earnings) would be outweighed by the emotional cost of failing to receive tenure.
... Or Utility?
Then two members of the P and T Committee are murdered, and it becomes clear to Professor Henry Spearman of the Economics Department that the killer must be on the committee. But which of his illustrious colleagues would have significantly increased his -- or her -- utility (i.e., happiness) by murdering a faculty member or two? Or three?

A fun mystery..........2007-06-07
If Milton Friedman liked it then hey - gotta argue with him right? :)
This is a great book. Its interesting and provides a lot of thought behind it. At the same time, its not challenging in any way. Thankfully, the book is explained well, the concepts are explained even better. Even if you don't understand basic economics concepts (which you should), the book will explain to you quite well in a very fun context.
It will leave you a bit curious and wanting a bit more at the end, yet the writer has weaven a great story with an economics setting. A bit dark and gloomy at times though.
I do wish there was more mystery at the end, but the novel is a very short read. I believe the writer didn't want to neccesarily bore the readers with too much economics. If you like mysteries, read this book! It'll give you a little thought and a lot of fun.
Economist fiction.......2001-07-17
Fatal Equilibrium reminded me of early science fiction (written by scientists about scientists for an audience of other scientists). This book is definitely written by an economist about economists. If you're part of that clique, it's a great book.
Not everyone will consider it light reading, though. If you don't have at least one econ class somewhere in your background, some significant parts of the book (and the plot) will go over your head. There were sections that felt like they were cut-and-pasted right from the author's lecture notes. I kept hoping that the book would be more like Larry Niven's work - grounded in theory, but first and foremost, a gripping story with compelling characters. I'd rather absorb my knowledge along the way than be lectured to.
I enjoyed it and I'll read it again.
Good Mystery Novel w/ great apllication of economic concepts.......2001-05-26
Marshall Jevons collaborates both a great mystery novel while presenting economic applications that people face in the world. Henry's explanation on the ecnomics of love and romance can be seen as strange, interesting, but most of all, comical. I truly recommend this book for those who plan on taking economics in college or are interested in the field of study. My economics class at the University of Chicago read this book which many enjoyed. After completing the book, we were asked to analyze the economics this book contains at a "deeper" level. Humanities clashed with economics without causing any type of argument among literature and economics majors.
A fun and educational read.......2001-01-04
I read this book as part of a study on how detective fiction mirrors society. The class was taught by Prof. William Breit at Trinity University, one of the co-authors of the book. Being an Econ major myself, I found this book's novel approach to blending economic concepts with a murder mystery to be unique and entertaining. Not your typical mystery novel, but one worth checking out.
Econ in a mysteriously potable format.......2000-11-02
This book was assigned to me for my Econ 201 class at UVa (virginia), and lo and behold, the author's real name is the professor for this class. Would this mean that one could say he is manipulating the market, and causing an immediate surge in demand during the otherwise weak sales-periods? Or is he simply using his power to dictate the syllabus to earn royalties? Cynicism aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I am a big fan of economics, and felt it was intriguing enough to read. The book manages to deftly intertwine many econ concepts and definitions throughout it, which is always useful for the beginning economist.

It looks at and analyzes changes which are taking place in the nature of international business, both in terms of the drives of trans-border transactions and the strategic orientation of the firms that engage in these transactions. The book also takes under consideration the dynamic forces of globalization.
Book Description
One of the best kept secrets in hollywood is the use of consultants to fine-tune scripts. Whether you are a screenwriter or not, if you have a second sense or insightful knowledge that can improve film storytelling, you may have just found a new way to make over $100,000 a year.
Customer Reviews:
A must in every screenwriter's library.......2006-08-06
Read and analyse your script from cover page, FADE IN to FADE OUT. Derek Rydall packs a lot of useful information in this well thought out, well written book. This is the meat and potatoes of the biz.
Do yourself a huge favor and read this book before you submit your next script. Chapter Two shows you how the studios see the difference between an amateur wannabee and a pro. Chapter Four brings in a wealth of good advice from well known experts like Linda Seger, Michael Hauge and David Freeman. David Freeman's sample scene analysis alone might make the difference between being kicked up the ladder or kicked out the door. You need every tool you can get your hands on to make your script a contender. Make this book part of your arsenal.
Whether you want to get your scripts in the door or want to be a script consultant this could be your blue prints to success.
The ONLY Book of Its Kind...A Great Way to a 6-Figure Income!.......2006-05-30
I really liked this book and I believe that there aren't any others like this one. It talks about how you can start a highly lucrative business as a script consultant and a re-writer.
The only thing that makes me hesitant is the ease (or difficulty) in establishing credibility as a consultant if one hasn't written anything worth mentioning.
Other than that, this is an incredible book and I hope that not too many people read it because it's an INCREDIBLE business idea and I want to pursue it myself.
An Interesting Insight into the Business.......2006-04-24
Can anyone who has ever been to a movie not have looked at some of them and wondered how such trash got produced? No one would start out with the intend of making a bad movie. You have to wonder how a group of people, presumably experienced and not unintelligent have produced something like that.
This book is written by a script consultant who tells what it's like to review and consult on the movie that's about to be made. While we all think that we could do this work, here's what the work involves. Here's how to get started. The best advice that I think he gives is work with someone in the business to at least establish the contacts.
This is a business like any other. You need at least the understanding of who does what. It is unlikely that very many of the readers of the book will actually become successful at script consulting, but it is still interesting reading to see what is done. It's an interesting insight into the movie production business.
Couldn't put it down!.......2006-02-28
As a screenwriter, this is the 14th book I've read on the subject, and by far the best. Derek Rydall not only prepares you externally to be a script consultant, he prepares you internally as well; forcing you to peel back the layers of your own psyche, and examine your inner obstacles to your own success.
Derek is not afraid to share his failures along with his successes, to help you avoid making the same mistakes. Each chapter starts with a few appropriate and inspirational quotes that create the setting for the chapter, and inspire the reader. What can I say? If it's not in the book, you don't need it! Five stars for this book that helps you shoot for the moon.

Screenwriter and Author
How to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more.......2005-12-04
There are plenty of movies on the market which feature substandard writing - so bad that even an audience member might think they can do better, let alone an aspiring screenwriter. If you're a member of the latter group, I Could've Written A Better Movie Than That! How To Make Six Figures As A Script Consultant Even If You're Not A Screenwriter is for you. It tells how to use this sense of perfection to earn cash as a script consultant, and comes from author Rydall's years of experience in the industry. Chapters show how to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more. Plenty of books tell how to write the script: few, except for this, tell how to make money repairing one.

For a variety of well-documented reasons, the overall market for business consultants--and the fierce competition among them to garner clients--continues to grow at an astounding rate. Robert Bly's The Six-Figure Consultant provides a series of clear guidelines for anyone hoping to grab a piece of this $30 billion annual industry. Whether your aim is to carve out a lucrative niche as a long-range strategy counselor, short-term implementation specialist, training-and-development guru, information provider, or temporary advisor, Bly presents solid advice on getting started, becoming an acknowledged expert on specific disciplines and industries, selling yourself, managing time and contacts, and boosting income with ancillary products and services. He concludes with a lengthy list of relevant books, magazines, software products, Web sites, vendors, organizations, and conferences, as well as various documents for everything from outlining a monthly retainer arrangement to advising clients when you're on vacation. --Howard Rothman
Customer Reviews:
Good book for start-up consultant.......2003-04-07
Mr. Bly has been in this business for a long time. He gives his own address, phone number, home page, ... which is unusual. His personal approach may just work in this economy.
What the book does not tell you, is how you can get consulting assignment in the first place. Being all things to all people will not work.
Very helpful.......2000-02-24
This book is one of the better ones out there. It really does take you step by step through all the different business development considerations inherent in a consulting business, and offers some excellent advice for getting yourself started. The appendix offers some useful forms and examples as well. This book is probably more for the beginner than the established consultant, but as a beginner, I learned quite a bit.
AWESOME Guide to Jump Start Your Consulting Business.......1999-04-04
Mr. Bly a well known consultant gives an outline guide for one to become a successful consultant. This book also details what is expected and needed for you to achieve the coveted 100,000 a year status. Though, it does not have a cohesive flow throughout its chapters this book can take you from point A to point B in no time.
I really liked this book.......1999-03-18
If you can get beyond the cover and perhaps the title, what you will find is an up to date book full of excellent examples and infomation. Not only does it offer the usual do's and don'ts, it offers well researched results and invites the reader to challenge their own thinking and go beyond what they think they can do. I don't think you will be disappointed. Excellent for someone starting out and someone who needs what Bly calls a, "jump start."

Practical and Doable Advice.......2003-12-07
To get into the spirit of things, Dr. Goodman starts with a discussion of the lifestyle and credentials of consultants. The energetic and informative way he talks about it is contageous. He does not ignore the downside (every worthwhile venture has one) but he is enthusiastic in talking about all the advantages associated with the work.
From this initial foundation he goes on to talk about marketing one's skills is which perhaps the major challenge faced by consultants new to the enterprise. He offers a number of options on getting one's name known.
This is a book for serious, hands-on people who want to enter the field. For veterans it is a useful reference book. I recommend it highly.

Book Description
Culture and Privilege in Capitalist Asia shows that the cultural reconfiguration of domestic and international relations around Asia's new rich has often been characterized by tension and division, and by an elevated status for the new rich themselves and the societies in which they live and work.
In this latest volume in the New Rich in Asia Series the authors examine the cultural reconfiguration, consumer behavior, economic success and cultural status of the new rich. The book includes case studies from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, India and China that challenge the narrow political-economic and cultural-determinist approaches that have so far dominated the literature on capitalist development in Asia.
