    Book Description

Policymakers are often hard-pressed to understand what economists have to say on policy issues, and scholars and students need to know what the latest research findings are and what questions remain unanswered. Fiscal Policy: Lessons from Economic Research presents the work of leading contributors to the public finance literature. The papers were originally presented at a 1996 conference sponsored by the Robert D. Burch Center for Tax Policy and Public Finance at the University of California, Berkeley.

Although the papers are broad in scope, they are not intended to be neutral, comprehensive surveys of the literature. Instead, authors were encouraged to focus on the issues they thought most important or interesting. The conference confirmed that on some questions there is a broad consensus, and on others there is strong disagreement. Because perspectives differ, after each paper two discussants offer their own views on the subject. More so than in many conference volumes, these comments are an integral part of each presentation.

The eight chapters fall into three subject areas: government budget management and control, federal entitlement programs, and attempts to influence private sector behavior through tax code management.

Contributors: Henry J. Aaron, B. Douglas Bernheim, David M. Cutler, Nada Eissa, Jeffrey Frankel, William G. Gale, Roger H. Gordon, Edward M. Gramlich, Bronwyn H. Hall, Kevin A. Hassett, James R. Hines, Jr., Hilary Williamson Hoynes, R. Glenn Hubbard, Robert P. Inman, Laurence J. Kotlikoff, Robert A. Moffitt, Joseph P. Newhouse, James M. Poterba, John M. Quigley, Robert D. Reischauer, David Romer, Daniel L. Rubinfeld, John B. Shoven, Jonathan S. Skinner, Joel Slemrod, John B. Taylor.

      Book Description

Much recent discussion has focused on the prospects for monetary unification in Europe and the possible creation of a European central bank. This book discusses in detail the possible structure and operational procedures of such a bank and investigates their implications for the community's member states and for the global economy. Presented at a conference organized jointly by the Centre for Economic Policy Research, Georgetown University's Center for German and European Studies and the International Monetary Fund, the papers collected here examine evidence from US experience, the influence of Community voting rules on monetary policy, the implications of centralized policy-making and a single currency, the fiscal requirements of monetary union, and the possible role of the ecu as an international reserve currency.

From the supplier: Eastern European countries rapidly moving toward economic redevelopment have been encouraged to accept unrestricted currency convertibility as part of the process of integrating into the world market economy. Currency convertibility has long been important in international economic relations. The preconditions to convertibility include realistic exchange rates, appropriate macroeconomic policies, and the elimination of price controls.

Subtitled A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, this absurd and very simple story has become a classic, selling hundreds of thousands of copies since its first publication in 1940. A peddler walks around selling caps from a tall, tottering pile on his head. Unable to sell a single cap one morning, he walks out into the countryside, sits down under a tree, checks that all the caps are in place, and falls asleep. When he wakes up, the caps are gone--and the tree is full of cap-wearing monkeys. His attempts to get the caps back generate the kind of repetitive rhythm that 3- and 4-year-olds will adore. (Preschool and older) --Richard Farr

                                Book Description

Monkey Business"Caps! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!" The peddler has huge stack of caps, balanced carefully on top of his head. Brown caps, blue caps, gray caps, and red caps. But no one wants to buy a cap. So he goes for a walk in the country, and takes a nap under a shady tree. When he wakes up, the caps are gone -- al except his own checked one. Where could his caps have disappeared to? And how will he ever get them back?

I ordered this book for a new first-grade teacher because she was lacking reading material in her classroom. It has been a favorite story of mine for probably 20 years. I used it in the classroom to have the kids dramatize it as a comprehension check. They loved acting it out. We used paper plates for the caps. The "monkeys" sat on a table when they were "treed." I would recommend it for children's libraries.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL EDITION TO AN OLD, OLD CLASSIC.......2007-05-12

I hate to admit it, but I can remember this story being read to me by my mother shortly after it was first published. I loved it as a child and love it now. The story, at first glance is simple, well told and an absolute delight. The illustrations are "old world," and the type I grew up on. Even though the story has been around for years and years, it is certainly no worse for the wear. What delighted me as a child seems to delight the kids of today. I read this one to my various classes and the kids all seem to love it. Actually, there is not much to not like about this one. Recommend it highly.

I recently started reading this book to my two year old, and she loves it as much as I did when I was young. It's fun to incorporate lessons on counting and colors as we read this silly tale of monkey see, monkey do.

5 out of 5 stars Monkey See Monkey Do.......2007-03-29

"Once there was a peddler who sold caps. But he was not like an ordinary peddler carrying his wares on his back. He carried them on top of his head."

When a peddler falls asleep on the job, he finds that his caps are stolen by a bunch of cheeky monkeys. The peddler discovers a way to get his caps back in a hilarious illustration of "Monkey see monkey do".

This book, first written in the 1940's has stood the test of time.

                                  Book Description

This book brings together articles on business agreements in the People's Republic of China, which have been carefully edited to present the reader with a uniform format. The articles are drawn primarily from the United States journals and reviews, but the legal and management issues treated in them are relevant to all businesses in the PRC. The book also contains sample joint venture, sales and commodity agreements and translations of key legislation relating to international business. This work is timely as the PRC is actively stimulating foreign investment, among other things by creating free economic zones. Audience: Law firms and in-house counsel who have to advise on doing business in the PRC and are seeking an understanding of the dynamics of PRC international business agreements.

Every client/prospect/customer is different. But, how can you indentify each person's profile and sell to them in the best way?

That's what People Reading does. Bill identifies three significant behavioral traits during each stage of the selling process and offers explicit suggestions on what to do and how to react.

In addition, salespeople learn precise presentation skills and determine the best closing style or technique for each client. And, it supports any successful system already in place.

There are also informative sections on questionning to build value, presentation tips, suggestions on how to handle or avoid objections, and sample closing techniques.

Mr. Whiteside has a simplistic way of writing that makes the information easily understood and very helpful. Anyone who must encounter people on a daily basis for sales purposes will benefit from this book. It provides helpful pictures that make the learning process for his recommended technique simple and easy. Even though I am not in sales, I have found his techniques very helpful in customer service and interactions with my own clients.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch- Simple- Easy to Implement.......2007-03-26

If you are looking for a simple system that doesn't require you to copy lists, type everything into your computer or become a slave to your PDA, then this book is certainly for you. I'm amazed that more people aren't familiar with this work and I'm lucky to have found it years ago. This book has helped me turn my paper mountains into organized and prioritized accomplishments. It helped me throw out the junk, keep the best items, and develop a system that keeps me organized and accomplishing more. This is a must read for anyone who wants to avoid the fancy books on time management.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A SLEEPER TIME MANAGEMENT BOOK.......2006-10-28

This book is the best book on Time Management and priority setting ever written. I read this book about 12 years ago it helped me organize my day and set priorities on the important versus the urgent.
For example - you put a "1" next to all the items on your to do list that equal the important to your career/success/well-being/etc. The you put a "2" or "3" on the others that are less important. Then you go back over all the "1's" and put a 1,2 or 3 based upon the time it takes to do it. For example - something that should take a short time a "3"; a long time to do - a "1" . Then your "to do" list looks like "1-1" long time to do very important; a "1-3" is a short time to do, but very important; And you do all the 1-1's and 1-2's and 1-3's first before the 2-1's and 2-2's ... get it? Like if pick up laundry would be a "3-1" - it is not important but takes a long time to do (if you are working) and therefore not going to make it to the head of the list. It forces you to think and prioritize and DO THE THINGS THAT COUNT. And you keep a MASTER LIST where write everything .... UNBELIEVABLE!! A SHORT BOOK - and it tells you volumes!!! and it works!!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for the Unorganized.......2004-04-25

The truth is that many of the quick fix techiniques and tips that are given to the many unorganized people as I used to be don't work well for long. I was on a quest to find out how to become organized my self and be part of the select few who seem to be born that way. By following what this books says I have been able to do it. See, many of the things that are believed to help aren't very effective, such as writing down things to do on an agenda that has times written down--doesn't work because its easy to be interrupted and not finish something on the alotted time etc. etc, but these are the foundations of personal organization. I have observed that these also happen to be the things that real organized people actually do. Now they might seem simple, but these book truly brings all the aspects of personal organization together--the three pillars as i like to call them, which with one missing, the other two fall in despair and chaos once again. Master List, Master filing system, and a clean work area--sound simple, it is, but trust me, read the book. Easy read, and well worth your time if you're disorganized--true testimonial form me, I can't stress it enough. My word.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-02-17

Occasionally a book comes along that is short, a pleasure to read and truly helpful. If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over is such a book. Mayer has spent much of his career as a time management consultant and he has written a basic primer for those interested in organizing their lives to a greater degree.

Most of us are being required to do more work with fewer people. How to get this increased workload accomplished is a common problem. Mayer asks, "But are we really increasing our productivity, or just the number of hours we work?" He then offers a solution. The key to getting work done is not simply to work harder and longer but smarter! Better organization is a solution. This book is centered on the principle of "save time by wasting less of it!" The author uses his vast experience to offer ideas, techniques, and concepts to save time and use it more effectively.

If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over provides common sense ideas that really work if we are willing to apply them. Being creatures of habit we tend to do things because that is the way they have typically been done. Mayer has boldly stepped out of the habitual routine to find ways to overcome daily obstacles to time and productivity. He attempts to show how time can be saved in "small pieces" rather than in large blocks. He ponders, "Save thirty seconds every five minutes, and by the end of the day, you've saved an hour." The book is divided into two parts. The first part shows you how to organize your workspace including your office, files management and desk. The second part shows you how to streamline your entire business to become more productive and organized.

This is a useful and rewarding book. If it helps you to change only one routine in your life due to its beneficial ideas it will have served a valuable purpose. Easy to read and understand from cover to cover!

5 out of 5 stars I first read this book in 1993 and still use it today........2001-08-10

Unfortunately, I later handed it off to a coworker who was struggling with organization. It's definitely a "read it once" type of book. My disorganized boss continuously comments on my organizational skills, so I've decided to pick up a copy for her as well as another coworker and replace my own.

5 out of 5 stars How to turn clerks into salespeople!.......2002-10-30

Do you work for a company that employs people in sales work that usually function more like "clerks"? This is the book that will turn them into effective salesmen and saleswomen. Most peole think that successful salespeople must be flamboyant extroverts, (or just plain liars!). SELL YOURSELF RICH explains, in layman terms, exactly how to sell more than you ever thought possible, and feel good about it. This is the ultimate textbook on WIN/WIN selling, and I, the author, have been on the front lines and have seen the methods work, and work well!
Too many books on salesmanship have been written by professors of psychology who think sales work is a matter of outsmarting or manipulating the customer/victim. While that may be one approach, it's not for everyone. SELL YOURSELF RICH is the "other route" to a successful and financially rewarding career.
