I purchased this one after a brief flip-through, thinking it presented a good overview of intellectual property law woven through a framework of unfair competition law.

That's not the right way to describe this book. It's really a nutshell about unfair competition law (the foreword reveals that the book used to be called "Unfair Trade Practices in a Nutshell"). Intellectual property law is discussed, but only inasmuch as it relates to unfair competition law. Lots of IP is left out--the section about patents, for instance, says very little about best mode, statutory bar, and other basic concepts, other than defining them in a sentence or two.

While this is still a useful guide for business lawyers and law students, the title is very misleading. If you want a decent guide to IP, get the other nutshell on intellectual property.

          If only the author stuck to what he proposed he would deliver, this would have been a great book... all a reader is expecting to get is practical mail order businesses they can start. The estimated profits to be made from some of the ideas are just too impractical, and yes ridiculous! You can tell he is just guessing his way to the end of this book.

          In my opinion the book was useful, except for the end of each chapter (and the end of the book) when Mr. Hicks tries to covince people to buy a book, a kit or a subscription to one of his newsletters. Also most of the time Mr. Hicks impresses people (at least that is what he thinks or wants) with all his fortune and his yacht. If I had read another book, would I have stated that it was useful to me?.

              Dr. Madhukar Shukla has been referred to as the "indian guru of the learning organisation" and in this book he shows why. Drawing on the theories of giants, he builds up a case for managing in the times when the capital (the K in economics) is Knowledge and vastly different from the traditional capital. As an entity knowledge is tacit and proprietary and as it becomes more explicit it becomes freely available. It is Dr. Shukla's contention that like truth, "knowledge will out" and it makes no sense for organizations to try to put locks on its mobility. Why like truth?...knowledge is truth!

              With the examples of case studies of organisations like ABB, British Airways, GE, Citicorp and Xerox , Dr. Shukla shows us how successful corporations around the world are recognising this fact and are trying innovative ways to leverage this capital for competitive advantage...to turnaround themselves, to transform and to innovate.

              What makes this book doubly enjoyable, is that it steers as clear of dobbledegook management jargon as much as possible..and when the author has to resort to jargon, they are suitably explained in lay terms. Coupled with examples strewn throughout the book, the often esoteric theories start to make startling sense and sock you between the eye.                   Microsoft Press has always produced books about Microsoft's products, but rarely has a book been produced about how and WHY you should be using them.                   This book presents B2B e-commerce through the eyes of Microsoft. It is not a technical book on the architecture to use to conduct B2B instead a business strategy book. However, it does present three case studies on B2B technical (.NET) architectures to use. In particular the servers : Windows 2000, Commerce Server , sql server and Biztalk.
                  The focus of the book is the business case for implementing B2B for any small or large company. The core of this is the ability of the technical (.NET) architecture to increase revenue or decrease costs. B2B and in particular procurement can lead to increased sales ( instant globalised company due to the global nature of the internet) and cheaper procurement costs through automation of buying processes.
                  The book is a business book that is able to justify the technical infrastructure needed for implementing a B2B solution. Most Microsoft Press books have historically been technically focused. This book breaks away from that tradition and is amost in the format of a Harvard Business School Press book. However, this is still an element of technical focus through the case studies presented.

                        I was gratified to read this guide as it's made me that much more prepared as I start thinking about what I need to do to snag an internship at CSFB. I liked how in-depth the front of the book was in chronicling the company's merger and the subsequent ups and downs the company has been going through. I feel more convinced that this company is a good fit with my goals and aspirations. I enjoyed the insider insights on what's great and what's not so hot at CSFB. And I really appreciated the in-depth info on the recruiting and training of associates and analysts who get into CSFB. As I'm fluent in 2 languages other than English, I'm definitely looking for a place such as CSFB that will call that into action and give me the chance to live abroad.
