Book Description
This book offers the most comprehensive characterization assembled to date of the historical, institutional, and economic forces affecting electricity regulation. Eminent economists organized by the University of California Energy Institute survey the US, UK, Scandinavia, Latin America, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. Recent experiments with privatization, competition, and restructuring in electricity are contrasted with instances where government ownership and traditional vertical integration still dominate. The introductory essay by Richard J. Gilbert, Edward P. Kahn, and David Newbery synthesizes individual country studies.

Book Description
This book explains the paradox that China's rapid economic growth for the past twenty years has taken place in a communist institutional context and under the firm rule of the party-state. In contrast to the dominant explanations of the "Chinese miracle" that feature prominently the
marketizing and liberalizing reforms, this book examines the role played by communist institutions and communist cadres in the economic success. With administrative decentralization and the opening of markets within the communist hierarchy, a peculiar institutional hybrid is created, and a new form
of economic dynamism-bureaucratic entrepreneurialism-generated. Bureaucratic entrepreneurialism in the Chinese context is the phenomenon of state cadres redirecting communist institutions toward the pursuit of market opportunities. It is an effective growth engine in that it fully utilizes the
inherent capacity of the communist system for economic promotion. The institutional context from which it arises also makes it possible for non-economic incentives (notably a top-down political pressure) to be systematically deployed to drive economic expansion. In other words, rapid growth took
place not in spite of the persistent communist system but in part because of it. However, although proven a powerful driving force in the economy, bureaucratic entrepreneurialism has helped to preserve the basic structure of the communist system and together with it many of the inherent weaknesses
of the Stalinist system. It is effective when the economy is characterized by shortage. Under strong market demand-itself a legacy of the Maoist era "shortage economy"-bureaucratic entrepreneurs, once empowered by decentralization, are extremely effective to mobilize production to meet the still
crude, unsophisticated demand. However, once a seller's market turns into a buyer's market, bureaucratic entrepreneurialism runs out of steam. Therefore, sustaining the current strong growth into the future requires a complete overhaul of the basic developmental institutions. The country needs new,
more market-based growth mechanisms other than those provided by bureaucratic entrepreneurialism. However, because of its political implications for the party-state, the required structural transformation will be a long and painful process with no guarantee of succeeding, and it will have to be
undertaken in a much harsher macro-economic environment created by an inevitable economic slowdown, as well as its ensuing threat of social unrest. The book offers a lucid analysis of the most fundamental driving forces in the Chinese economy during the past two decades. It also raises prominently
the issue of non-economic incentives in economic development at both the theory and policy levels, and challenges the hegemony of neoclassical economics in development policy-making.

Market Communism has strength in theory but not evidence.......1999-12-18
Lance Gore's work synthesizes findings about Chinese political economy in the past ten years or so into a somewhat coherent framework. He argues that because local cadres have different mandates (provide public goods, get profit, maximize local economic growth) and because many economic powers have decentralized to the local level, local officials have used these powers (setting tax rates, controlling lending..etc.) to spur local economic growth. While this has generated phenomenal economic growth in the past decade, it also created the problems of investment fragmentation, local protectionism, and continual state intrusion in the economy. Implicit in this framework is that local officials have many different roles, not just that of a rent-seeker, as the neo-classical approach would argue. I think this framework successfully resolves one of the major contradiction about the reform-- why was phenomenal economic growth possible under such rampant state intrusion. The story he provides for the incentives facing local officials is logically compelling. However, this framework does not explain the vast amount of variation that exists in China. For example, if all local officials have investment hunger, why do some localities get so much more loans than others. Do all local governments have the same ability to garner local resources for economic growth? Also, although he borrows empirical evidence from other studies to bolster his claims, there are other things he could have done. For example, he could have shown a correlation between investment fragmentation and the decline of central revenue as a percentage of total revenue. Despite some of these shortfalls, Gore's work constitutes the cutting edge in Chinese political economy and has contributed greatly to our understanding of CHina.
Book Description
"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion," asserts Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric, in an interview featured in The Articulate Executive. This insightful collection illustrates the powerful connections between effective communication and effective leadership in the information age. While some of the articles focus on the mechanics of communication-providing applicable ideas and guidelines for improving writing skills, presenting plans, conducting interviews, and holding meetings-the emphasis is on the variable beneath the surface, such as nonverbal cues and personal agendas, which have at least as great an impact on how messages are received and acted upon as they travel up, down, and across the organization.

Book Description
Afuah and Tucci’s Internet Business Models and Strategies: Text and Cases, 2e draws on research to develop and integrate a framework to help students understand factors that surround a firms performance and the central role that business models play in the face of the Internet. In the first part of the text, Afuah and Tucci explore the concepts on which Internet models rest. The second part offers cases of both Internet firms and Brick and Mortar companies that must formulate and execute successful business models and strategies.
Customer Reviews:
How companies survive in rapid technology sectors.......2005-02-07
Professor Afuah reveals how companies can structure successful Internet business models. He describes buying behavior among early adopters, ways to transfer innovations within a company, ways to reduce uncertainty, and methods of achieving a strong competitive position. The book's case studies give concrete examples that readers can use as a foundation for making business decisions. This is an instructive book for entrepreneurs and product managers who aim to launch products in fast-moving technology arenas. (Note: Bryan Richards is co-author of a case study on Microsoft's X-Box Online that appears in "Internet Business Models and Strategies").
Took Mr. Afuah's class at Michigan ...........2003-02-08
The book is (or was) an excellent primer to understanding the fundamental concepts of e-commerce. But while there are some business concepts thrown in (i.e. the 5 C's), they do not expand on those basic understandings of the Internet and its businesses. Anyone who had been following the Internet years via other publications would already possess the necessary knowledge that this book provides. If you don't have a good understanding, then at [$$$], there are cheaper alternatives.
A great boost to this book would have been including a CD containing even one of Mr. Afuah's lectures. Mr. Afuah is a brilliant and knowledgeable man who challenges his students to think beyond just the basics. We were not able to get away with trite responses not backed up with data. Since this is hard to do through a book, an interactive CD could at least be somewhat useful.
internet business model.......2002-11-21
this book really helpful for all students that really interesting with ecommerce. Not really difficult and easy to understand when you reading.Good Words and conceptual. And off course all reference up to date.
Great book for beginners.......2002-11-21
After reading this book, I found this book was very helpfull for me in understanding kinds of Internet Business. Since I don't have "Internet" background in my education, this book is really recommended by me to be your reference book, whether it is for student use or business implementation. Least but not last, it is resourceful, up-to-date, and comprehensive but not too technical also fill with real case studies.
Good Book!!.......2002-11-21
This book contains a lot of things - conceptual and technical - we need to know about internet. Especially about business models and it's strategies. It is up to date and suits for business on internet nowadays. This book is not so difficult to understand, so to know more about business on the internet, this is the right book to read.

Book Description
The debate on the impact of globalization tends to stress different and sometimes opposite aspects. Some argue that globalization is likely to have a positive impact on economic growth and efficiency, whereas others seem worried of its negative impact on workers, of the generation of new forms of social exclusion and of a worsening of market failure. The essays presented in this volume offer critical elements for assessing these positions. They also examine the role of national and international institutions in ensuring that globalization leads to a more sustained and equitable economic growth without endangering social cohesion.

Impressive.......2004-09-14
This book presents an encyclopedic overview of gender and employment in selected countries in the Middle East and North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iran, and Algeria). The author gathers and analyses economic statistics from a wide range of published sources; she also includes data from her own fieldwork. The countries covered are each taken up in separate chapters (although Morocco and Tunisia form a joint chapter, as do Jordan and Syria).
Moghadam describes how the factors of educational attainment, cultural restrictions, and economics (need for family income, as well as the labor market) determine whether a woman can and will work. In the beginning chapters of the book (Morocco and Tunisia, Turkey), she gives a pointed emphasis to economic factors, perhaps because these can be firmly supported with economic data. By the time she describes Algeria, however, she seems to place more emphasis on cultural factors. Perhaps this shift from economic factors to cultural factors was the basis for ordering the chapters in the way she did, although she does not state this explicitly.
If Moghadam had included the richer Gulf states in the study, she might have been forced to address the competition between the factors more directly. In the richest Gulf States, women often attend school equally as long as men do, but their participation in paid employment is even lower than that of Jordan or Algeria. Thus it would seem that economic need and space in the labor market are both required in order to overcome cultural restrictions against women working outside of the home; education alone will not get a woman a job. If, however, the cultural restrictions are overcome by economic factors, then education will help a woman find work and security.
