      Book Description

The emergent discipline of ecological economics is based on the idea that the world's economies are a function of the earth's ecosystems - an idea that radically reverses the world view of neoclassical economics. A Survey of Ecological Economics provides the first overview of this new field, and a comprehensive and systematic survey of its critical literature.

The editors of the volume summarize ninety-five seminal articles, selected through an exhaustive survey, that advance the field of ecological economics and represent the best thinking to date in the area. Each two-to three-page summary is far more comprehensive than a typical abstract, and presents both the topics covered in each paper and the most important arguments made about each topic. Sections cover:

Each section is preceded by an introductory essay that outlines the current state of knowledge in the field and proposes a research agenda for the future.

      3 out of 5 stars Only Summaries.......2002-04-17

This is a wonderful collection of essays and the introductory sections are very informative, however the complete essays are not included, only 2-3 summaries written by the editors. This may not be clear from the information given by Amazon.com.

The essays are the some of the best in the field and the summaries well written. But, the overall usefulness of this book is limited. It may be a good starting point for research; readers will quickly find themselves wanting the full text of some of the essays summarized. It may also be a useful study guide for students who have read many of the complete articles and would like a quick summary that is more complete then a usual journal abstract.

Beyond that, this is not a helpful book. I would recommend Ecological Economics: The Science and Management of Sustainability by Robert Costanza, which contains many of the same articles and other works by many of the same authors.

This book is priced much lower than other collections of essays in Ecological Economics, but considering it does not contain full articles it should probably be even cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars One to have !.......1999-04-26

As a student in environmental economics at masters-level, i must say that this essay collection has come as rain from a blue sky. Essay collections in general is a great thing, and indeed there is a few of reccommendation behind from this one. But two things stands out from this one. Firstly in embraces a vast number of articles which rightly belongs to the "classics" category. And unfortunately such articles are sometimes hard to come by, and a number of the article included in this collection has not, to my knowledge, been published before. Therefore the book is excellent as a reference collection. Furthermore the structure of the book, is made up in such a way, that the articles are printed under a thematic heading. And the editors has managed to provide some excellent introductions to each new subject, which mean that the reader, even though he's not capable of grasping the essence of all the collected essays, at least get a fair idea of the problems involved.

In all, this means this collection, apart from being an important reference book, is providing a very comprehensive way of making essay collections in general. So all five stars are indeed well deserved.

5 out of 5 stars Analytical summaries of the best of the literature.......1998-11-03

The Frontier Issues in Economic Thought summaries, along with the overview essays, provide a markedly different service from the standard collection of abstracts. The series will benefit not only scholarly work but the application of our best thinking to the problems of the times.

5 out of 5 stars A new paradigm of economic thought for the 21st century.......1998-10-16

I worked for many years in Central America as a correspondent for the Financial Times and as an economist have felt frustrated at what I increasingly perceived as a yawning gap in economic, political, and philosophical thought, that was preventing our increasingly globalized world from facing the huge challenges of unemployment, poverty, and environmental catastrophe that seem to lay ahead. A SURVEY OF ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS has helped fill that gap for me, and has given me optimism that we are not too late to do something about these issues. The book is exactly what I have been looking for and has helped define for me at least what I believe could be the basis of a new paradigm of economic thought for the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and systematic survey.......1998-10-13

Although I did not understand this during my college years -- nor, I suspect, did the economists who wrote the texts I used -- economics has a key role to play in the urgent quest for a path toward sustainability. A SURVEY OF ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS is an extremely important record of how economics is beginning to collaborate with other disciplines to contribute to that quest, as well as to other essential inquiries into the manner in which people interact with each other and with the world around them.

The editors have searched the literature in many different fields to find keynote articles which extend economic thinking into new areas. Unifying the whole contents of the book -- the overview essays of the editors, and their summaries of about 85 selected papers -- is the underlying theme that new methods must be found which will improve the quality of human lives. This purposeful use of the economic perspective to be of service in the quest for broad environmental and social improvement and for alternatives to the status quo is tremendously valuable. This book serves a unique purpose for me, and I suspect for many other readers. I am certain that I would never personally perform the literature searches which the editors have undertaken. The summaries and overview essays are an efficient way to introduce me to material that is far from my own discipline of training. Without this series I would not have access to the important papers, both current and historical, which are presented and interpreted in A SURVEY OF ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS and its companion volumes in the "Frontier Issues in Economic Thought" series.

        Description:
This paper applies a typology adapted from the consumer psychology literature to a Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) survey. We argue that the typology is helpful as a way of identifying responses that contain useful information on preferences for the environmental good in question, relative to those which are unlikely to contain such information. Applying this framework to a CVM study of agri-environmental payments in Germany, we find that some 90% of responses are preference-revealing; this distribution changes when the framing of the good is changed. The typology may be of most use during the design stage of future CVM studies, since it enables researchers to increase the fraction of responses that are useful.

          Description:
We investigated the ''fringe benefits'' of participating in contingent-valuation mail surveys and their effects on respondents' answers. A two-wave panel survey evaluating Japan's anti-global warming policies was conducted. One sample was randomly assigned to either of two survey treatment groups with different survey loads. Factor analyses of answers distinguished the survey fringe benefit factor from the environmental concern factor. The correlation between the two factors was smaller for the heavy load group than for the light load group. Estimations of structural equation models showed that survey participation became higher when the survey fringe benefit factor scored higher. This tendency was found regardless of the survey load level. Structural equation models did not confirm a positive correlation between the survey fringe benefit factor and the consistency of WTP answers across survey waves. However, a logistic regression of the answers from the heavy-load group revealed a positive correlation between the consistency of WTP answers and the level of ''perception of the survey as a good cause,'' which was highly correlated to the fringe benefit factor in the previous factor analyses. This positive relationship was not detected for the light-load group.

            Description:
Economists generally hold that environmental regulations impose constraints on the production possibilities set and are therefore potentially harmful to economic growth. In recent years, however, it has been recognized that environmental regulation can enhance the prospects for growth if improved environmental quality increases the productivity of inputs or the efficiency of the education system. It is also held that environmental regulation promotes pollution abatement activity and can lead to the exploitation of increasing returns to scale in abatement. Furthermore, expectations of a better environment may encourage households to save. Finally, it has been conjectured that environmental regulations can stimulate innovation because R&D is a relatively clean activity and because the market share of clean innovations increases. Future empirical research should shed light on the relative importance of these different channels of transmission of environmental policy to the growth rate of the economy.

              Description:
Ecovillages, co-housing communities, and other types of intentional communities (ICs) have proliferated in recent years. There are currently several thousands of these communities worldwide and their numbers are increasing rapidly. We surveyed a subset of these communities to learn more about their characteristics, including their world view or vision, the status of four basic types of capital (built, human, social, and natural), and the quality of life (QoL) they provide for their residents. Survey results indicate that ICs have a better balance between built, human, social, and natural capital than unintentional communities (based on a parallel survey of neighborhoods in Burlington, VT, USA) and that this results in a higher QoL among residents. It is difficult to assess the sustainability of ICs, but the data indicates that within ICs, social capital is substituted for built capital thereby reducing the level of material throughput.

                Description:
In an original extension of contingent valuation methodology (CVM), support for a proposed environmental regulation is examined under three alternative polluter-pay specifications. Using a statewide random telephone sample of Washington State's electorate, one scenario asks respondents for their support absent any CV price and absent any information regarding what producers will pay. A second scenario asks willingness to pay (WTP) providing only a CV price but no polluter-pay information. A third scenario asks respondents for their support giving both a CV price and a percentage of total costs producers will pay. Extending the CV methodology, this percentage varies randomly between respondents. Absent any price or firm cost sharing information, some respondents assume producers are absorbing the costs. Providing a CV price reverses this assumption, and reduces support even after controlling for price. When the CV price is given along with the percentage, WTP increases the larger the percentage. Within each scenario support also varies according to whether the type of industry being regulated is small and competitive, or monopolistic.

                  Description:
Hybrid powertrains are considered being a promising technology to decrease fuel consumption of passenger cars. Sales numbers of hybrid cars are expected to rise considerably until 2010. However, the introduction of more efficient products is often accompanied by rebound effects, which counteract the positive effect of increased efficiency. We investigate two kinds of direct rebound effects that could possibly occur when buying hybrid cars: (i) people could tend to switch from small and/or already fuel-efficient cars to the new hybrid car, and (ii) the average vehicle ownership could increase, if the hybrid car is often purchased without disposing of an already owned vehicle. A survey was conducted with all 367 buyers of the Toyota Prius 2 in Switzerland in the first nine months after market entry. Return rate reached 82.6% without sending out reminders. The survey-based approach does not allow us to investigate whether hybrid drivers will in the future drive more (the classical example of the direct rebound effect). Detailed data on the car replaced by the Prius and on the other cars owned by the household were collected. Our analysis shows that average CO2 emissions dropped from 210 g/km for the previously owned vehicles to 104 g for the Prius. Empty vehicle weight (curb weight) increased by 9 kg only, which is below the market trend. A constant population-averaged vehicle ownership still allows for a certain amount of first-time car purchases and for increasing vehicle ownership for individual households, as these additional cars are compensated for by other households disposing of a vehicle. We present a new vehicle ownership model which assesses whether the vehicle transaction behavior of a sample of new car buyers corresponds, on average, to constant or increasing vehicle ownership. It is based on disaggregated data from the Swiss travel behavior micro census. Model results are consistent with market data and data from literature. Model results show that if ca. 20% of car purchases do not replace a vehicle (for a population with an age distribution identical to Prius buyers), this still allows for constant average household vehicle ownership. Only 13.7% of the surveyed Prius buyers did not replace an old car. Hence neither of the two rebound effects investigated could be found though the sample would have been large enough to do so: vehicle size did not increase, nor did average household vehicle ownership.

                    Description:
In this paper I survey and discuss recent developments on the incentives provided by environmental policy instruments for both adoption and development of advanced abatement technology. A main conclusion to be drawn from the literature is that under competitive conditions market based instruments usually perform better than command and control. Moreover, taxes may provide stronger long term incentives than tradable permits if the regulator is myopic. If the government can anticipate new technology or is able to react on it optimally, regulatory policies by virtue of administered prices (taxes) and policies by setting quantities (issuing tradable permits) are (almost) equivalent. The literature also shows that under competitive conditions there is no difference between auctioning permits and grandfathering. Moreover, timing and commitment of environmental policy is not crucial for adoption under competitive conditions. Commitment has positive incentive effects, however, if an R&D sector has market power. In the presence of market imperfections the ranking of the different policy instruments is ambiguous.

                            Book Description

                            SAY CHIC...C'est magnifique!

Ever wonder why some French words have become so common in English as to be clichés? Or why your witty repartee wouldn't be quite so witty without them?

In Say Chic, Françoise Blanchard and Jeremy Leven collect more than seventy familiar French words and phrases that have become a permanent part of the American vocabulary. In their clever, often amusing style, the authors explain the origin of each word, its meaning, and how it came to be adopted into English. Uniting the sensibilities of an American author and a French author, these surprisingly entertaining stories combine world history, pop culture, etymology, and pithy observations about Americans and the French, with no small amount of panache.

Featuring delightful illustrations, Say Chic will find its raison d'être on the bookshelf of anyone who has ever longed to be an American in Paris and hankers for a bit more of that irresistible je ne sais quoi in America.

                            Book Description

People decide 10 things about you within 10 seconds of meeting you. These decisions are based on your image, a combination of your appearance and behavior. This workbook helps you examine the behavior part of the equation. You will learn that how you say something (body language)is far more powerful than what you say. You will also learn the specifics, like what you say through your posture, gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, etc. Your actions do speak louder than your words!

                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars We Say It Without Words.......2001-09-03

I found this book to be interesting, easy reading and thought provoking.

Realizing that body language is important, and to be able to "read" it, is one of the best people skills a person can develop. Whether you are the office manager, or a clerk in a store, by reading the body language of co-workers, or customers, can give you the advantage in most situations.

The reader takes a pre-test, and without looking up the answers, studies the book. At the end a post-test is taken and then the answers are compared. I was amazed at the improvement. I wouldn't recommend doing the entire book at once. Take 1 or 2 sections and apply them before going on.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more to the book. The exercises were good, I just felt like there should have been a lecture to go with it, to re-enforce what the book said.

Overall, this would be a good workbook for staff training.
