A Survey of Ecological Economics (Frontier Issues in Economic Thought)
Manufacturer: Island Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1559634111 |
Book Description
The emergent discipline of ecological economics is based on the idea that the world's economies are a function of the earth's ecosystems - an idea that radically reverses the world view of neoclassical economics. A Survey of Ecological Economics provides the first overview of this new field, and a comprehensive and systematic survey of its critical literature.
The editors of the volume summarize ninety-five seminal articles, selected through an exhaustive survey, that advance the field of ecological economics and represent the best thinking to date in the area. Each two-to three-page summary is far more comprehensive than a typical abstract, and presents both the topics covered in each paper and the most important arguments made about each topic. Only Summaries.......2002-04-17
The essays are the some of the best in the field and the summaries well written. But, the overall usefulness of this book is limited. It may be a good starting point for research; readers will quickly find themselves wanting the full text of some of the essays summarized. It may also be a useful study guide for students who have read many of the complete articles and would like a quick summary that is more complete then a usual journal abstract.
Beyond that, this is not a helpful book. I would recommend Ecological Economics: The Science and Management of Sustainability by Robert Costanza, which contains many of the same articles and other works by many of the same authors.
This book is priced much lower than other collections of essays in Ecological Economics, but considering it does not contain full articles it should probably be even cheaper.
One to have !.......1999-04-26
In all, this means this collection, apart from being an important reference book, is providing a very comprehensive way of making essay collections in general. So all five stars are indeed well deserved.
Analytical summaries of the best of the literature.......1998-11-03

A new paradigm of economic thought for the 21st century.......1998-10-16
A comprehensive and systematic survey.......1998-10-13
The editors have searched the literature in many different fields to find keynote articles which extend economic thinking into new areas. Unifying the whole contents of the book -- the overview essays of the editors, and their summaries of about 85 selected papers -- is the underlying theme that new methods must be found which will improve the quality of human lives. This purposeful use of the economic perspective to be of service in the quest for broad environmental and social improvement and for alternatives to the status quo is tremendously valuable. This book serves a unique purpose for me, and I suspect for many other readers. I am certain that I would never personally perform the literature searches which the editors have undertaken. The summaries and overview essays are an efficient way to introduce me to material that is far from my own discipline of training. Without this series I would not have access to the important papers, both current and historical, which are presented and interpreted in A SURVEY OF ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS and its companion volumes in the "Frontier Issues in Economic Thought" series.

Say Chic: A Collection of French Words We Can't Live Without
Francoise Blanchard , and Jeremy Leven Manufacturer: Scribner ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1416561846 |
Book Description
SAY CHIC...C'est magnifique!
Ever wonder why some French words have become so common in English as to be clichés? Or why your witty repartee wouldn't be quite so witty without them?
In Say Chic, Françoise Blanchard and Jeremy Leven collect more than seventy familiar French words and phrases that have become a permanent part of the American vocabulary. In their clever, often amusing style, the authors explain the origin of each word, its meaning, and how it came to be adopted into English. Uniting the sensibilities of an American author and a French author, these surprisingly entertaining stories combine world history, pop culture, etymology, and pithy observations about Americans and the French, with no small amount of panache.
Featuring delightful illustrations, Say Chic will find its raison d'être on the bookshelf of anyone who has ever longed to be an American in Paris and hankers for a bit more of that irresistible je ne sais quoi in America.

Book Description
People decide 10 things about you within 10 seconds of meeting you. These decisions are based on your image, a combination of your appearance and behavior. This workbook helps you examine the behavior part of the equation. You will learn that how you say something (body language)is far more powerful than what you say. You will also learn the specifics, like what you say through your posture, gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, etc. Your actions do speak louder than your words!Customer Reviews:
We Say It Without Words.......2001-09-03
Realizing that body language is important, and to be able to "read" it, is one of the best people skills a person can develop. Whether you are the office manager, or a clerk in a store, by reading the body language of co-workers, or customers, can give you the advantage in most situations.
The reader takes a pre-test, and without looking up the answers, studies the book. At the end a post-test is taken and then the answers are compared. I was amazed at the improvement. I wouldn't recommend doing the entire book at once. Take 1 or 2 sections and apply them before going on.
I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more to the book. The exercises were good, I just felt like there should have been a lecture to go with it, to re-enforce what the book said.
Overall, this would be a good workbook for staff training.
