Economic Superstitions 101.......2006-09-15

All you need to know about this book is that it's written by a useful idiot helping out the government who makes completely false claims such as that:

1.) The Federal Reserve protects the dollar, never mind that the dollar has lost over 90% of its value since the Federal Reserve was created.

2.) The government should work to guarantee full employment, never mind that government policies and regulations are what cauase massive unemployment to begin with and government jobs themselves are usually less useful to the rest of society, such as paper shuffling.

3.) The government should manage international trade, never mind that massive problems that have come about because of institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the Orwellian titled North and Central American Free Trade Agreements. Never mind that regulation of international trade usually exploits consumers for politically-connected domestic interests.

4.) The government should protects us from pollution of our environment when it's places where government is biggest such as in D.C. where it's usually dirtiest.

5.) The government can create in increased standard of living for all, yet Americans' standard of living has decreased for nearly thirty years due to the growth of government and its having its hands in almost every area of the economy.

6.) There is such a thing as overall demand in the economy when there really isn't amongst consumers.

7.) Investments and capital are the same thing. Actually they're very diverse.

8.) Perhaps the biggest superstition is the attempt to separate micro from macro in economic affairs and claim that the decisions of individuals don't affect the overall picture. This is false because the decisions of numerous individuals is what makes up the overall picture.

A pretty good intro to macro issues.......2004-08-04

I thought that in general the book was pretty good. I liked the essay format as they were good sized chunks that explored a single topic well. It is a very easy read, especially at a chapter or two a day. I would have liked to see more mathematical discussion of some points, but that is not the point of the book so I can't fault it for not covering any. All in all a good read, but a bit dated at this point, thus the 4 stars.

Ideal Primer on Macroeconomics.......2003-03-21

This is a GREAT book to use to understand the macroeconomy. I read it in 2002 and although the book was written 10 years ago, it described what was happening in the economy perfectly. The 30 10-page essays are an ideal way to learn an important but dense topic: small, manageable bites. I highly recommend this book. After taking my time reading it, I am going to read it again after 6 months. It is worth the price and the time to read it.

A Very Practical "How To" Book.......2000-01-05

I've been a full time coach for over 10 years and Ron Ernst's RealTime Coaching is a real contribution to the coaching profession. The model he developed is easy to understand and powerful in its application. His use of actual coaching dialogue demonstrates how to use the coaching model and let's you go behind the scenes and view not only what the coach said but why she said it. A very practical "how to" book for any manager who is charged with getting work done with and through the cooperation of others. I highly recommend it!

Real Time Coaching is the simplest, yet most profound, coaching model I have come across in the years I have been coaching. It is a model that is easily understood and urges one to see the cause and effect between their behavior and the results they are achieving. I have gotten rave reviews from all classes who have gone through the model and as one leader in a company said, "I wish my boss would use this approach on me." Practical, Results-Now Oriented, & Skips the usual Hype.......1999-12-05

As the Founder of the Coach Center Group, I see a lot of coaches and material about coaching.

It's refreshing to see a book that is not only practical - but Results-Now Oriented. (Too often, some coaches sound like they are reading from a list; or their coaching is oriented to some future that isn't connected to present reality. This book is a cure for all that.)

Coaching is becoming so popular that the hype about coaching isn't helping. A good coach can coach in the present moment, resulting in plans rooted in reality and decisions in the present that get results.

If you want to learn to coach for such in-the-now results, with decisions that actually make a difference -- so that productivity and morale improves, employee turnover is reduced, job satisfaction and effectiveness improves -- then you really ought to look at this book, and read it. Take it seriously, apply what it says, try it out.

Wonderful blend of business and technical information.......2002-03-26

This book is an encyclopedia of metrics that business process owners care about, and a compendium of advice for measuring them. Don't let the title fool you - this book is as applicable to bricks and mortar businesses as it is to e-commerce sites. I can assure you that reading this book will give you insights into the minds of the business process owners for whom you exist to serve, and will impart a good appreciation of business imperatives.

What I like about this book, aside from what I've said above, is the way the authors analyze the technical and business factors. They start in Chapter 2 with a five-layer e-commerce model, then proceed in subsequent chapters to thoroughly dissect the model and how it applies to business types. This book only addresses technology as it relates to business issues. Chapter 3 illustrates this approach wherein the internet platform is placed into the context of cost/benefit issues. As such you'll get the technical details necessary to understand e-commerce infrastructure, but you'll never lose sight of the business imperatives. This is a refreshing approach, in my opinion, and the rest of the book is consistent with this.

Specific chapters that I particularly like include: (Ch 8) Customer Acquisition models, and (Ch 9) Application of Business models. These two chapters capture the essence of e-commerce. Another valuable part of the book is the appendix, which provides in tabular format real companies, their major and minor categories and revenue models. This is excellent research material that has been pre-compiled and will save you untold hours of research and classification as you benchmark your model against competitors and other business models.

Although I was unfamiliar with the authors and uncertain of the quality of theories/research, I was splendidly suprised and found this book to be a wonderful read. Not only were the theories challenging and stimulating, the author provided fascinating examples of the underlying principles of the book. I think that not only is this book a must read for internet professionals but for the avid business reader as well. The theories can be applied to all disciplines and the concise manner of this book makes it easy for all to understand.

The authors have done an excellent job of breaking up ecommerce into small modular business models, which can be easily understood and analyzed. Internet services, in particular, are detailed well with clear examples. The book covers a lot of ground in a simple, easy-to-read style. Found it useful to understand my business!
