From the author: Two key goals for aligning technology and business are to increase an organization's ability to change rapidly and to reduce the costs of technology. While many efforts are underway to improve application development, less emphasis has been placed on addressing key challenges posed by existing applications that resist rapid change. In this paper, we discuss techniques for accelerating change to legacy systems and for streamlining an application portfolio. Our approach takes business-driven application requirements, links them to analysis of an application portfolio, and identifies potential sequences of transformations to realize the targeted improvements. This paper describes our approach for mapping business requirements to application software, for using patterns to help translate business requirements to software requirements, and for using patterns to translate software requirements into potential solution designs. The paper describes how these techniques are applied to two stages of the software life cycle--initial analysis and detailed analysis--and summarizes experience gained from projects working with IBM clients.

From the supplier: IBM outsourced its risk management services to Marsh and McLennan Companies Inc. and to Johnson and Higgins. These two brokers received the contract because they were able to phrase their bid in financial terms, according to IBM manager James J. Conerty. Conerty believes that risk transactions are basically financial transactions and that risk managers must understand a company's financial situation to be effective. Marsh and McLennan will broker world-wide procurement of casualty insurance; Johnson and Higgins will broker property insurance.

Customer Reviews:
Great info for serious job seekers.......2003-04-11
This is a great source for those ambitious folks who are committed to working at this big five firm. I was very curious to see how IBM turned out after the big changes that took place with its merger. Now I feel fully prepared to meet the recruiters when they come to my campus this fall. I strongly recommend this as a great source for interview preparation.
Shows you a view of the company from the inside out.......2003-02-20
This guide is the best recruiting resource I've found so far. There is no other resource that provides this kind of in-depth information, both the good and the bad, on a single company. Now I have a very clear and detailed picture of the company structure, its business strategy, and the inside culture. I was fully prepared for my interview with intelligent questions. Better yet, if I get the offer (I hope!) I know exactly what I'm stepping into. To anyone interested in working for IBM, I can't recommend this strongly enough.
Good ammo for the interview.......2003-02-20
This guide was a good read--I was wondering what was up with the PwC acquisition! Anyway, it will definitely be helpful for when I interview with IBM. I'm banking on the fact that I've read and re-read this guide and followed up with more in-depth research to give me the inside edge on my competition!
Book Description
The essays present an up-to-date picture of the North-South negotiating process with respect to commodities. Some of the essays examine general issues concerning these negotiations, looking at topics such as power relationships and debt problems; others form coherent case studies. The development of the Common Commodity Fund also is discussed.
Customer Reviews:
A view of the future.......2000-11-25
This book is a classic for all of us who are looking for a change of pace and a better way of life. With the Virtual Office a reality, we can work virtually anywhere, so why not choose the pastoral life? We refer our readers who harbor such dreams to this book again and again. Sarah Edwards, author The Practical Dreamer's Handbook.
The best of it's kind.......2000-11-08
This is the best book of it's kind that I have read - out of about 5 or so. Written in 1997, the authors considered the Internet and telecommuting as well. And it is nearly as relevant to Australia (where I find myself) as to the USA. Easy to read, it contains many useful hints, tables, and resources. Valuable questionaires and lists. What you should and what you shouldn't. What you need, and what you don't. Even so, we also had a "First Try". But nothing ventured is nothing learned.
Loved this book!.......2000-06-17
Your book is well informed and plenty of resource that gave me more confidence. Reread it few times. I really enjoy reading it very much. Thanks
Detailed, realistic insights for aspiring country dwellers.......1999-09-15
If you have been dreaming of moving to the country, but don't know if you can really do it successfully, Country Bound! is a great resource. The Rosses lay all their personal experience on the line, frankly and comprehensively. They help you ask yourself the "nitty-gritty" questions that you MUST consider before making such a big life change. The book's separate sections on lifestyle and business considerations help you break down the decision into manageable pieces. The many quizzes and activities are fun as well as eye-opening, and the writing style makes it a quick, enjoyable read. One reading may not be enough, however! There's so much good information here, you will want to review many sections over and over!
A useful tool for Chambers of Commerce too........1997-10-23
As the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Partnership for Economic Development, your book has become a major source of reference.

Customer Reviews:
Writing and Reporting News.......2006-03-14
Helps understand the fundamentals of writing and reporting in a real live situation. An extreme help for beginner journalists or writers.
Great book for a beginner like me.......2005-10-05
This book is a required text for a journalism class I'm taking at a junior college. It is extremely well written, and the best part is, it's written in simple terms. As a beginner, I'm finding the information extremely helpful. I haven't looked at the CD yet.
Good Textbook.......2003-12-17
As a student using this textbook, I have found that Rich is clear and direct in her instructions and gives examples that are easy to understand and follow. This is a must-have for any novice in journalism or a student learning to write for print journalism.
A Great Way to Teach Writing.......2000-03-28
I started using this text in my beginning reporting and writing classes a year ago. It was a strange experience: My students actually loved a textbook! I think that because this text does a good job of getting over the touchy-feely parts of treating the writing and editing processes as coaching processes, and shows how it's actually done. My students were able to convert her perspectives into some good work during our one-semester course. I'll be using this book again for some time to come.
Book Description
This ideal partner to Rich's text gives your students the practice they need to become better writers. The workbook includes more than 100 writing exercises and style quizzes based on real news articles.
Customer Reviews:
DUPLICATE!.......2007-09-11
THIS WAS, AS ALL DON ASLETT BOOKS, VERY GOOD. HOWEVER, IT IS VIRTUALLY (EXCEPT FOR A FEW SENTENCES) THE SAME AS 'DONE'. I READ 'DONE' FIRST, AND ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED TO READ THIS BOOK. BOTH BOOKS ARE GOOD BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME. TIP: IF YOU READ ONE, DON'T READ THE OTHER.
Lofty ideals...and a lot of common sense.......2007-06-03
This is one of my favorite time management books. It's written in a straightforward, to the point manner, and focuses on not on cliches, complicated lists or 'feel good' fluff but offers some sound techniques ('be early' and dejunk' being a couple of them) and is interwoven throughout with good values and ethics as well (do right, read the scriptures, taking care of others is one of the most productive things on earth, etc.).
I'll admit I'm still working on incorporating all these principles into my life with more or less success, but think this is one of the best basic expositions of the work ethic and how to have a fulfilling life (hint: you won't get one watching TV every night after work).
I like too that he focuses not just on top tier executives or athletes, but on people from all walks of life showing that everyone can make the most of what they have.
Recommended.
Don Aslett must be as much fun as a hangnail.......2006-07-25
I checked this book out because I'd bought How to Lose 200 Lbs in One Weekend on a friend's recommendation and got a lot out of it. I wasn't just disappointed -- I was amazed at what Aslett considers reasonable in the quest for productivity. If we followed Aslett's guidelines, we'd never stop to chat with a friend, would work through meals even if we were hungry (not that the meals would be worth stopping for -- Aslett considers spice to be "food clutter" and recommends sticking to unspiced food), eschew coffee breaks because lifting that cup to your lips takes time, time, time, rise earlier, work later and generally keep our noses to the grindstone at the expense of relaxation, recreation or pleasure of any kind.
This book reminded me of the old joke about the man who asks his doctor how to extend his life, and the doctor tells him to give up alcohol, women, and rich food. "You won't live longer, but it will seem like an eternity." Aslett may be able to cram forty-eight hours into one day, but what a miserable day it is.
a bit unrealistic.......2004-02-22
I found this book to be inspirational but unrealistic - unless you are a type "a" workaholic"- then it's o.k. I bought this book several years ago and have read it a couple of times and the impression I get every time - compulsive, obsessive and unrealistic
Be More Productive With The Time You Have.......2003-06-22
I just read How to Have a 48 Hour Day again. It's authored by someone I interviewed several years ago, Don Aslett. I read it every once in a while to see if I am still following some of the ways to be more productive with my time. It is the best time management book I've ever read. The way Don teaches how to treat time is remarkable.

Customer Reviews:
Solution selling that works.......2007-02-22
The second of the three Gooze books. Finding his work has made a terrific boost to my income and career. Every complex sales person, CEO should read and reread his stuff.
Mitch delivers in a big way.......2007-01-26
Initially introduced to Mitch Gooze as a Vistage guest speaker, he was kind enough to offer his book "The Secret to Selling More". What a wealth of knowledge in a concise easy to read format. Much of the case studies had to do with the notion of forgoing the traditional external salesperson approach and moving in the direction of internal sales representatives (ISR's). My company sells a service not a commodity...I phoned Mitch with questions on the how-to of implementing his strategies in a service environment, he was gracious enough to return my call with a matter of hours and share with me very insightful thoughts, guidance and direction relative to applying the concepts of selling a commodity via ISR's without hesitation. I never expected such a meaningful conversation with his earnest and sincere desire to assist myself and company. I would encourage everyone struggling with ineffective traditional sales methods to read this book! Thanks Mitch!
Why hasn't your sales training worked?.......2006-10-11
Reviewed by Stephanie Rollins for Reader Views (9/06)
"The Secret to Selling More" by Mitch Gooze poses the question, "Are you happy with the performance of your sales force?" Of course, everyone wants more sales. The question is how to get everyone to sell like the top performer of the sales force. Also, is your top performer maximizing his or her potential? Do you need to set your goal higher than the performance of the top performer?
Gooze focuses on effectiveness and efficiency. He defines efficiency as "increase in sales' performance at the same or lower cost of selling, or by achieving the same sales' performance at a lower cost of selling." In this section he encourages old-school salespeople to not be in the field as much.
He explains that the one-on-one attention to clients has proven not to be as valued as it used to be. He encourages more phone contact and internet contact. He also explains that this keeps the salespeople near the customer service people. This helps when a client calls for assistance. The salespeople can reach the customer service department much more easily than if they are in a field, placed on hold.
"Improved effectiveness indicates sales' ability to sell more of the "right" customers "right." Why waste time with people who clearly are not your potential clients? Also, know who your clients are and how to sell to them.
Throughout the book, I kept thinking that he was referring to the need to "brand." The new paradigm is to think how to establish a brand. In the end of the book, he did touch on the subject. According to Gooze, branding is "A brand is a short-hand trigger for the positioning in the buyers' mind to remind them of what they get from buying this product or service. Branding is important in order to keep the customer's attention and loyalty on that specific company."
"The Secret to Selling More" is easy to read. It is broken down into sections, which simplifies the book. I did not find the book all that useful, but I think old-school salespeople may.
I grew up with a reliance on technology, as did most people under the age of 30. Therefore, it is instinctual to rely on technology for my relationships with my clients. For anyone who does not do so, this book may be an aid.
This is a book to share with your co-workers...AND your boss!.......2006-03-25
This book is worth the read, for the really funny and interesting stories alone. No matter where you fit in your company...how large or small your company is...or how efficient or broken your marketing and sales departments might appear...this book has insight and tips that make sense and are easily applied. This isn't your typical high-brow, I know better than you, type marketing book. I read this book over a weekend and went into work recharged with eyes wide open. This is that one book you buy for your whole team.
Thought Provoking.......2005-04-06
I found the information presented in this book to be both fresh and thought provoking (I read it twice). I have read a lot of sales training books and it is rare to find one that truly presents new ideas and ways of looking at the sales/marketing process. I found the anecdotal references to be insightful and useful in relation to my own day to day business. Mitch Gooze has a entertaining style backed up by experience and a clear, strong thinking process. The aspects of marketing and the responsibilities of marketing particularly on pages 132-136 really hit home for me as did the strength of positioning statements.
