In addition, the appendixes include a description of the product development process, sample templates and job descriptions, and questions to ask during the hiring process.

Although Starting a Documentation Group was designed and written with new group leaders in mind, it is also full of relevant and useful information for veterans.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point.......2005-07-20

This book is a great companion to Managing Your Documentation Projects by Dr. Hackos. It describes a concise, straightforward approach for publications managers or technical writers interested in advancing their skills or taking their department in a more focused direction. And, it provides a clear blueprint for how to position the publications group in the software development lifecycle. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource, Especially for Small Groups.......2001-04-17

When I asked a colleague if he would recommend this book, he said, "Well, there's a lot in there you already know." He's right. After 13 years as a tech writer, there's a lot I already know, but there's also a lot I might have forgotten. Hartman's readable book is a gentle reminder, among other things, of processes we may have forgotten, and of the big picture of writing documentation.

Another reason I found it useful was that it is tailored to small and startup organizations. In small companies, processes are trimmed and schedules are more compressed. If you've worked in large companies during your career and are thinking of joining a smaller company, Hartman's book tells you what to expect.

Hartman's suggestions on how to start, schedule, and staff projects may seem obvious to someone who's done it for years, but I found it interesting to see how someone else did it. My manager, who has not managed a doc group before, also read this book so she could see what the processes are in a well-run doc group. She's also going to try his suggestions for setting up a doc project in Microsoft Project: she and I have spent quite a few days trying to get it right, and we're hoping his suggestions help.

My only disagreement with him is in his statement where documentation groups belong in the organizational structure. Hartman is firm in his suggestion that documentation groups belong under Engineering. He overlooks reporting to Support, which can work extremely well. Nor does he mention that some Engineering groups treat doc personnel as second class citizens because they are not as technical as the Engineers. In extreme cases, they're treated as little more than technical typists; at best, they are not given the respect, authority, and freedom to act that they need to be true user advocates.

All in all, Hartman appears to follow widely accepted rules of good practice and presents his ideas in readable, enjoyable form.

I think it's a great resource for new managers or those who find doc managers in their reporting structure. As I said, it's also very valuable for people who worked in large organizations and are now working for smaller ones. Managers of organizations that are downsizing or spinning off smaller companies might also find it useful.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must for a New Technical Writer's Bookshelf.......2001-02-01

I bought this book with an Amazon Christmas gift certificate from my supervisor. It was one of the wisest investments of my career! Hartman takes you through every step to develop a successful technical writing group.

You are taken through the development process and project planning; the tasks of naming your group and getting necessary resources. You learn how to hire new employees, develop a style guide, write functional specs, and an information plan. The product development process is outlined with a summary and definition of the stages involved and the deliverables required at each stage.

Project planning is covered quite well, but I would advise purchasing "Managing Your Documentation Project" (JoAnn Hackos), "Developing Quality Technical Information" (Gretchen Hargis), and "One Minute Designer" (Roger C. Parker). This combination is like having an entire technical writing curriculum at your fingertips.

Lively, a popular speaker on time management and overcoming procrastination, covers the pros (yes, there are some!) and the cons of procrastination, then shows how to handle the situations that relate to it -- including those over which we have little or no control. With specific tips on pushing through "The Risk Zone" (the point at which the individual is ready to take on new risks) and taking action, this is a book no procrastinator will put off buying and reading ... even for a minute.

              1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2006-11-05

If you are a true procrastinator, don't waste your time by reading this book. While the author has good suggestions for those who have trouble making decisions, she fails miserably at helping those who know what to do and simply can't take action. If suggestions such as "start sooner" is what you're looking for, then this is the book for you. If you'd be motivated by calling yourself a "smart little snuffle-bunny," as the author suggests, then this is the book for you! However, if you are over the age of 10 and don't appreciate being patronized, I would not suggest wasting your time and money. After I read the book, I was so distraught that I had wasted 10 hours of my time that I could never get back. If you are struggling with procrastination, you'd be better off with another book choice.

5 out of 5 stars A winner with both analysis and strategies.......2003-09-14

The author has done an excellent job of providing useful tools, as opposed to the platitudes and vague concepts that plague many self-help books. There is a good balance between analyzing the causes of behavior and providing ideas and strategies for changing it. Of particular note is the useful distinction drawn by the author between procrastination and problems with decision-making.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and motivating self-improvement guide.......2002-04-04

Ms. Lively is a consultant and speaker on the subjects of procrastination, workplace decision-making and clear-thinking skills. She has also written an eBook called Managing Information Overload.

What makes this book a standout among procrastination books, in my opinion, is its offering of an alternate reason for being stalled in achieving your goals other than procrastination, which the author defines as knowing what to do but not doing it. That other reason for being blocked is that you are clueless about what to do because you lack adequate information or training. For this insight alone, and the accompanying advice for effectively scaling both these types of walls, this book is well worth reading.

Other reasons I gave the book 5 stars include the following:
              (1) The author has a lively voice and avoids preaching.
              (2) The book has a clear, readable Table of Contents and an Index, making it easy to look up what especially interests you or to go back over particular points in the book at a later time for further inspiration.
              (3) While I often get irritated by the "homework" in self-help books, this author is, thankfully, far less cutesy and/or patronizing than most authors in this genre. One caveat: I would recommend that, if you are actually going to give these exercises a try, you get yourself a notebook (either spiral or loose-leaf) to keep your scribblings together. If you just grab up loose pieces of paper as the author suggests, you are going to end up with dozens of messy pieces of paper floating around on your already cluttered desk (procrastinators tend to be very sloppy as well as slow to get going!).
              (4) This book isn't primarily geared toward teaching you how to make good choices, set goals, and gain useful problem-solving skills. As the author openly admits, there are many other books on the market specifically aimed at those topics. However, since the author asserts that in order to come out of procrastination, it is crucial to first figure out exactly =why= you are procrastinating, she very appropriately covers these important topics in a solid, basic, understandable way.

4 out of 5 stars Don't hestitate! Read this book now........2002-01-21

This book is very suitable for two types of people. The first type is they don¡¦t know what to do. And the second type is they know what to need to do, but don¡¦t do it. If you are one of them, you must read this book immediately. You may not change your lazy behavior after reading this book, but you will know the right direction of being a person who know what to need to do and do it right now. Also, the author divided the content into two parts, one is for the first type of people, another is for the second type. Therefore, you can read the part you need. It can save your time also because of the clear structure. Moreover, many useful tips and techniques are given in each chapter. Apart from teaching the readers the way to overcome procrastination, the author draw out the benefits and drawbacks when you are procrastinating. Certainly, it is not enough to know what to do, it is useless if you don¡¦t do it. So, this book will help you a lot if you want to be an active person.

This Manual is divided into two sections. The first deals with sale of goods and covers all major aspects of this subject, extending beyond sales contracts to include contracts for the supply of goods and services. The author deals with the essential concepts of property transfer and respective obligations of each party to perform its side of the contract and the remedies available in default. Statutory protection in its various forms is discussed and the relevant statutory provisions are appropriately extracted for ease of reference. Particular attention is given to more recent legislation, to the contribution of the European Union in this area and to the problems of electronic commerce. The work also includes consideration of recent case law. The second section, dealing with Consumer Credit, explores the Consumer Credit Act 1974, explaining its difficult concepts with clarity. The discussion is user-friendly, for example in the use of flowcharts and in concise explanation of the calculation of rebates on early settlement.

A comprehensive introduction to the underlying technologies of e-commerce. This book explores the full range of technologies, protocols, and techniques necessary for building successful e-commerce sites. Description:
Previous studies of online stores have concentrated on identifying various attribute and benefit dimensions important to customers and neglected delving into underlying motives of customers engaging in shopping online. The current study identified personal values as underlying motivations, which have received less attention but carry important meanings in explaining customers' loyal behavior. From the perspective of means-end chain theory, a hierarchical cognitive structural model consisting of personal values, attribute evaluations, and loyal behavior has been proposed. 353 questionnaire data were collected from the experienced online shoppers in South Korea and put into structural equation model to investigate the hierarchical effects of personal values, evaluations of online store attributes, and loyalty. The results show that three customers' values such as matured society, happiness, and esteem life are the underlying beliefs motivating and/or deterring customers to shop online. But their impacts were diverse. Even though esteem life value had a positive effect on attribute evaluations, values for matured life and happiness had negative influences on loyalty. In addition, the results also demonstrated that customers' favorable evaluation of product assortment eventually guides customers to be loyal to an online store.

                          Book Description

This study investigates the econometric properties of the demand-for-money function as it affects monetary policy. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the general properties of conventional and alternative demand-for-money specifications and on the predictability of those specifications over time. The data sets used for the econometric work of this study constitute an important contribution for the empirical demand for money literature. Most of the existing literature on money demand has been based on U.S. data. An important criticism of that literature is that the various hypotheses about post-1974 demand for money in the United States have been tested on the same body of data that originally suggested the hypotheses. Grivoyannis here uses a new data set-the Japanese data base-for the first time, comparing the results with those obtained for the United States. The comparison is justified because of the significant similarities between the U.S. and Japanese monetary sectors. Thus Grivoyannis is able to reliably test proposed explanations for the recent abnormal behavior of U.S. money demand on a different set of data and offer important new insights into the general properties of money demand functions. Grivoyannis begins by examining conventional short-run demand-for-money specifications, presenting estimation and simulation results from log-level and log-first-difference specifications for both countries. These results are then compared with data-driven "best-variable" specifications. In Chapter 2, the author separates the demand for real M1 into the demand for currency and the demand for demand deposits in order to determine the main source of the function's instability. Sectorally disaggregated demands for real M1 by money holder are also examined in depth. Alternative specifications, which attempt to take into consideration institutional events as well as financial innovation and deregulation, form the focus of the third chapter. Grivoyannis' conclusions support the general suspicion among policy makers that the assumed stability of the money demand relationship has collapsed. Required reading for scholars of monetary policy, econometrics, and macroeconomics, this study will also be of significant interest to students of international finance and banking.
