    Book Description

This book addresses two significant research areas in an interdependent fashion. It is first of all a comprehensive but concise text that covers the recently developed and widely applicable methods of qualitative choice analysis, illustrating the general theory through simulation models of automobile demand and use. It is also a detailed study of automobile demand and use, presenting forecasts based on these powerful new techniques.

The book develops the general principles that underlie qualitative choice models that are now being applied in numerous fields in addition to transportation, such as housing, labor, energy, communications, and criminology. The general form, derivation, and estimation of qualitative choice models are explained, and the major models - logit, probit, and GEV - are discussed in detail. And continuous/discrete models are introduced. In these, qualitative choice methods and standard regression techniques are combined to analyze situations that neither alone can accurately forecast.

Summarizing previous research on auto demand, the book shows how qualitative choice methods can be used by applying them to specific auto-related decisions as the aggregate of individuals' choices. The simulation model that is constructed is a significant improvement over older models, and should prove more useful to agencies and organizations requiring accurate forecasting of auto demand and use for planning and policy development.

The book concludes with an actual case study based on a model designed for the investigations of the California Energy Commission.

Kenneth Train is Visiting Associate Professor in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of Economic Research at Cambridge Systematics, Inc., also in Berkeley. Qualitative Choice Analysis is included in The MIT Press Transportation Studies Series, edited by Marvin L. Manheim.

Despite its claims to global scope and relevance, International Political Economy as a field of study remains entrenched in a narrow set of theoretical, conceptual and empirical foundations derived from the experiences of the advanced industrialized democracies. Bringing together specially commissioned chapters by leading authorities in each key area of debate, Globalizing Political Economy provides a systematic examination and critique of contemporary IPE, and puts forward a new agenda for a truly "global" political economy.

                          Product Description

"There have been many writings on geopolitical forces—how nations interact in the pursuit of power. Less has been written on geoeconomics forces—how national economies interact in the pursuit of economic gain. . . . It is to Sheth and Sisodia's credit that they offer a penetrating analysis on where the future of different countries is going under the pressure of geoeconomic forces." —From the Foreword by Philip K. Kotler, S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University While the world is still coming to grips with the implications of globalization, Tectonic Shift investigates what the globe’s economic and geopolitical future looks like and discovers the unfolding of an unprecedented realignment of forces. Based on extensive study and analysis, the authors of this compelling book argue that regionalization will replace the much celebrated globalization, characterized by extensive North-South integration between developed and developing nations. Authors Jagdish N. Sheth and Rajendra S. Sisodia describe how the world is evolving into three huge economic and political unions, which will take shape by 2020, and predict that: The EU will expand both eastward as well as to the south, right up to Southern Africa The Asian block, initially led by Japan and then by China, will encompass a united Korea, ASEAN, Australia, and New Zealand and create a vast free trade area by approximately 2015. The US and Latin American nations will revive the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and will be joined by the UK. South Asia will have its own free trade area, which will eventually ally with the FTAA Sheth and Sisodia argue that these evolving, strategic partnerships will involve free trade, monetary union, cross-border infrastructure investments, regional development agencies, and conflict resolution mechanisms. They also discuss the key steps that each region will have to take to be successful, and how it can overcome obstacles to change. Handled properly, the authors further argue, this evolution will result in faster and broader economic development coupled with diminished conflict among nations.

1 out of 5 stars A Dogma of two Idealists.......2007-04-02

If you are going to read this book, I recommend you to do so with a grain of salt. This prophetical novel by Jagdish Sheth and Rajendra S Sisodia is highly dogmatic, and because of that, many of his assertion made are groundless and illogical. The authors fail to look beyond the economical relations among countries and underestimate the political and historical tensions among them. For example, they hypothesize that all of Middle East will eventually unify and enter the EU block, but they fail to adequately explain how exactly the political/religious tensions among these ME countries are going to settle. They also make similar assertion regarding the unification of Asia block as well, but they too again fail to explain how the political/cultural tensions among these countries are going to settle. But these two are not all. Sheth and Sisodia make many other groundless arguments regarding many issues. They either forcefully tried to make sense of their theory or really believe in some irrational ideaology that economical relationship cures foreign tensions among countries. If you are truely interested and in reading this book, I recommend you to also touch upon "Globalization and Its Discontents" by Joseph Stiglitz, and most importantly, to read with criticallity and caution.

                            Book Description

This volume explores one important feature of the new global politics--the emerging role of regional systems of relations. The contributors concentrate on key questions: What constitutes a region? How is the historical process of region-formation developing? What are the roles of main state and non-state actors involved? What are the future prospects? The book examines 11 different regions that are coming into existence in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa to show how regionalization is an uneven developing, heterogeneous, and multi-dimensional phenomenon.

                              Book Description

Is economic nationalism an outdated phenomenon in light of globalization? Economic Nationalism in a Globalizing World demonstrates the enduring, and even heightened, economic significance of national identities and nationalism in the current age. The volume's contributors, pioneers in the reinterpretation of economic nationalism, explore diverse ways in which national identities and nationalism continue to shape contemporary economic policies and processes.

The authors examine the question in a range of geographical contexts and issues: European Union food politics, competitiveness strategies in New Zealand, East Asian development strategies, Japanese liberalization, monetary politics in Quebec and Germany, and post-Soviet economic reforms. Together, the cases explore the policy breadth of nationalism. It is not just a "protectionist" ideology but is in fact associated with a wide variety of economic policies, including support for economic liberalization and globalization.

                                  Book Description

This book explores how changes in the new world economy are affecting the education of male and female workers. Authors from Australia, Africa, Brazil, Europe, North America, and South Korea use methodologies--such as literature reviews, case studies, legislative analysis, evaluations of model delivery systems, and demographic profiles--to examine the current efforts of a number of nations around the world to transform vocational education and training (VET) programs into gender equitable institutions where female students are able to obtain skills necessary for successful and economically viable lives.

The cross-national perspectives in this volume illuminate the meaning of VET equity theory and practice in the new economy. Gender equity in education is constructed differently from place to place depending on a variety of factors, including economic development and cultural traditions. Starting from this understanding that gender and culture are multifaceted, historically situated, and constructed around dominant economic and institutional structures, class identities, and social positions, as well as discursive practices, the book addresses central questions, such as:
*What roles do schools play in the global economy?
*Is there a parallel between an increasingly globalized economy and a viable universal concept of education for work?
*What is the effect of a nation's financial condition, political system, and global economic posture on its training policies?
*Are educational equity issues heightened or submerged in the new economy?

The comparative perspective helps readers to more clearly analyze both tensions that arise as capitalist changes in the new economy are contested, resisted, or accommodated--and the impact upon education. In the Afterword, the editors identify overarching themes emerging from the volume and illuminate various comparative perspectives on gender and the new economy.

Globalizing Education for Work: Comparative Perspectives on Gender and the New Economy brings together important information and analysis for researchers, students, and teachers in education, women's studies, and sociology; for vocational education and training professionals; and for policymakers and policy analysts in governmental and nongovernmental organizations. It is well suited as a text for a range of graduate courses in the fields of comparative and international education, politics of education, vocational educational policy, gender and education, and sociology of education.

                                    Book Description

Taipei's quest to become a global city, which began in the 1960's, is the city's urban development. Globalizing Taipei reveals how the development of this capital of an Asian Dragon, key city in the South China Growth Triangle, and center for transnational production, has received firm state support, but is conditioned by international and domestic politics.
Divided into four parts -- economic and spatial restructuring, state and society realignment, social differentiation, and cultural reorientation -- the book analyses the interaction of international, state and local politics in the shaping of the city's urban environment from the Second World War to the present day.
All the contributors to this edited volume, except the editor, are Taiwan scholars, presenting the critical insiders' views for Taiwan. Based on each author's specialization and research interest, each chapter provides an in-depth analyses of one of Taipei's developmental issues generated by globalization. Collectively, they provide a broad, insightful and coherent coverage of this crucial era of Taipei's global transition.

                                      Book Description

This book evaluates the claim that in order to explore the changing social foundations of global power relations today, we need to include in our analysis an understanding of global civil society, particularly if we also wish to raise ethical questions about the changing political and institutional practices of transnational governance. br br The authors engage directly with the notion of global civil society in order to examines the ethical, social, and political conditions that make certain kinds of globalizing practices a reality today. They explore and utilize the normative dimensions of the civil discourse to further debate about the meaning of citizenship in a world of multi-level governance, as well as the changing characteristics of political community and democracy. br br Bridging the normative concerns of political theorists with the historical and institutional focus of scholars of international relations and international political economy, this book will be of broad interest to students and researchers concerned with international relations, civil society, global governance and ethics.
