5 out of 5 stars The Job Express Series.......2000-02-16

I bought all three books in the series while I was in college in 1994, around the year they were published. I loved them all. Cover letter express and Interview Express were the most useful, however. They are short, in a simple step-by-step format and get right to the point. There are examples of good and bad situations. I was checking online to see if they still made the companion software and was surprised to see that the books are out of print. They are only 6 and 7 years old. Worth looking for.

I bought this book thinking that it would be a nice guide to have after reading all the other great reviews. However, this book is not all that. Most of the stuff in it I already knew. It is a good book if you are completely clueless about this stuff, however, for those that know SOME stuff about the subjects I recommend that you pass on it and find another book.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever purchased three copies of........2003-09-30

To a girl on her own for the first time, every small catastrophe is a threat to her burgeoning independence, even to her sense of identity and self. Corny as the title (and cover, fonts, and optimistic writing) may be, "The Hip Girl's Handbook for Home, Car, & Money Stuff" is a godsend and lifesaver. As a perpetually frazzled young woman who has been on her own for a couple years now, I can sincerely tell you that every new, horrifying experience in maintenance has been its own trauma worth calling the police department or landlord over (like the time I smelled gas, frantically called the fire department, and they laughed as they relit the pilot on my stove, for instance). But Jen Musselman and Patty DeGregori take the horror out of the inevitable, giving young women the power and knowledge to take on each catastrophe with a clear head.

The book is arranged just as the title implies: the 'home' section talks about picking out a home, navigating the breaker box, and unclogging pipes--things no girl should have to turn to a repairman or neighbor for. The 'car' section lends comprehensive advice as to the maintenance and repair of every gal's automobile, as well as how to recover control of the car in times of enormous distress (and the section delegated to Road Tripping alone nearly one-ups Cameron Tuttle?s "Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road"). And lastly, the 'money' section pares down managing a checking account, as well as combating identity theft, into equally understandable, dare I say manageable, scenarios.

Not two days after I'd purchased my own copy of the book, I bought one for my best friend; do the same for the gals in your life. This is the one book every girl should keep front-and-center. The information jam-packed into this smiley little reference book is outright empowering: knowing how to take on every circumstance, no matter how wee or how devastatingly harrowing, gives a young woman both the confidence to take matters into her own hands, and consequently the blessing of new independence.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Purchase.......2003-02-27

This is a great buy for anyone out on their own for the first time, or for those of us who couldn't quite get it right the first time! Since reading it, I can now boast some stellar Hip Girl tire changing skills. And, just about the only thing clean in my apartment are the pipes which I now routinely tend to because of this book. My plumber boyfriend couldn't be more proud!

                  5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!!!.......2002-12-17

This book is fantastic! I am sending it for Christmas or birthday gifts to all of my married and single friends. It is so practical - especially the car tips - but also just a great book to read. There is definitely no book like this. Most helpful books are boring "how to" books - but not The Hip Girl's Handbook. These authors were able to include helpful information in a clever way so that this book is witty and fun to read. It also has an easy layout so I can reference what it is I am looking for pretty quickly.

I just wish I had this book years ago when I was first on my own away at college. I would highly recommend this book for any woman (or even young woman) who is, or wants to be, independent!

                  Book Description

An in-depth, hard-hitting account of the mistakes, miscalculations and myopia that have doomed America’s automobile industry.

In the 1990s, Detroit’s Big Three automobile companies were riding high. The introduction of the minivan and the SUV had revitalized the industry, and it was widely believed that Detroit had miraculously overcome the threat of foreign imports and regained its ascendant position. As Micheline Maynard makes brilliantly clear in THE END OF DETROIT, however, the traditional American car industry was, in fact, headed for disaster. Maynard argues that by focusing on high-profit trucks and SUVs, the Big Three missed a golden opportunity to win back the American car-buyer. Foreign companies like Toyota and Honda solidified their dominance in family and economy cars, gained market share in high-margin luxury cars, and, in an ironic twist, soon stormed in with their own sophisticatedly engineered and marketed SUVs, pickups and minivans. Detroit, suffering from a “good enough” syndrome and wedded to ineffective marketing gimmicks like rebates and zero-percent financing, failed to give consumers what they really wanted—reliability, the latest technology and good design at a reasonable cost. Drawing on a wide range of interviews with industry leaders, including Toyota’s Fujio Cho, Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn, Chrysler’s Dieter Zetsche, BMW’s Helmut Panke, and GM’s Robert Lutz, as well as car designers, engineers, test drivers and owners, Maynard presents a stark picture of the culture of arrogance and insularity that led American car manufacturers astray. Maynard predicts that, by the end of the decade, one of the American car makers will no longer exist in its present form.

                  3 out of 5 stars Not Enough.......2006-09-11

Maynard does a splendid job analyzing Detroits's current problems but ignores some important history. The industry as a whole was badly damaged by the great depression and later even more so by the FDR, The NRA, and the new dealers. Once upon a time American cars were like their Japanese and European counterparts in the sense they were precision machines loaded with engineering inovations, Cadillac offered 3 engines in 1931. V-8, V-12, V-16. By 1941 Cadillacs were nothing more than Chevrolets in basic design but grown longer, wider, and fatter. The American auto industry in the 1920's & 30's was like Europe's auto industry today building all different kinds of cars in all different price ranges. There were cars like the Doble and Stanley that were steam powered, in 1935 there were about 20 different car makers other than the big 3. The Depression coupled with sky high New Deal taxes destroyed the fine car makers like The Pierce Arrow Motor Car Company of Buffalo NY, Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg leaving the way for the Europeans to grab this important market starting in the 1950's after the economy began to recover from the war. Low cost car makers like Studebaker were hated by the UAW because they could not afford to pay the same wages Ford, or GM could. Ther biggest part of this whole tragedy is the art of making, desiging, well crafted cars died with the Pre-WWII generation From 1946 - 1973 American cars were been big, heavy, rolling pieces of costume jewelry. When oil prices after 1973 made building the cars in this manner no longer possible, Detroit has struggled since as to what to do. No longer able to fool people with cheaply made cars disguised to look well made under tons of steel, they have had to re-invent the way they build cars. To Detroit's credit they have made some progress over the years. The problem they faced in the 80's was they had not had to build anything remotely resembling a sophisticated engine in over 50 years. Up to the early 80's the 1928-37 Indiana made Duesenberg Model J still held the title of most technologicly advanced American car, when Detroits new front wheel drive engines could not match Toyota fuel economy they had to remove weight off the cars to make them lighter, since most consumers know nothing of engineering and only judge cars by what they see and feel, American cars were dismissed as being Tin Cans on four wheels, to quote my mother. In recent years Detroit has made some progress. Cadillac seems on the mend, the XLR is a wonderful car but like the Allante before it, way over priced. The new Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are really nice but GM blundered big time dropping Oldsmobile.Ford has not been doing so well, the new Mustang is a 1967 Mustang front end and 1970 Mustang rear-end redone in plastic. YUK ! Mercury is almost dead. The new Lincolns are hideous. Chrysler has benefited from it's association with Damiler Benz. The Chrylsler 300 is the nicest sedan in it's price range. Time will tell if things turn around. The U.S. Auto industry has been written off before and has come back.

5 out of 5 stars Maynard is the Oracle of Detroit.......2006-03-19

Here we are, March 2006 and reading this book for the second time will give one chills! Wagoner had a road map predicting the demise of GM and yet stayed the course. This book combined with The Toyota Way makes the unfortunate End of Detroit painfully clear and often sheds more light on cultural paradigm than business sense!

4 out of 5 stars An alternate title: Big 3 Execs Blow It.......2006-03-11

I was disappointed when I first started reading Ms. Maynard's book. I had expected to delve into the details of the manufacturing process and appreciate Japan's robotic genius. If you are interested in the technology then look elsewhere.

But Maynard is a pretty good storyteller. She tells stories about the founders of Toyota and Honda. She chronicles their cars, the Camry and Accord, and the engineers behind their success. If I have any complaint about her book, it's that she writes more about the import companies and their leadership then she writes of Detroit, her home town.

Perhaps she is hoping that the CEO's of GM, Ford and (Daimler)Chrysler will read her book and take a lesson or two from their competition:
                  1. Listen and learn from your customers. Had Ford paid more attention, Taurus might still be the number one selling sedan.
                  2. Respect your workforce. Toyota and Honda are demanding of their workers, in Japan and in America. But they also value and actively seek their suggestions for improving the production process. (Whether the United Auto Workers hinders this communication in Detroit is left unclear.)
                  3. Stay humble and hungry.

In the end I'm impressed with the case Ms. Maynard makes for leaderhip. Poor decision making by the Big Three Execs explain much of the reason that Detroit matters less in the automotive world than it used to.

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but somewhat superficial.......2006-01-18

This book provides a helpful overview of the major problems and challenges that the American auto-makers are currently encountering. Its breadth is impressive, covering everything from automotive history to market analysis to profiles of and leadership anecdotes from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, BMW, and others in addition to the Big Three.

But at only 310 pages (hardcover), what it has in breadth it lacks in depth. Books like Turnaround (about Ghosn's revival of Nissan) and Car (about the design of the Ford Taurus), both cited by Maynard as sources, provide more direct insight on automotive industry leadership. And Halberstam's The Reckoning, although it's twenty years old, makes a more compelling and analytical argument as to why Detroit should worry about the imports.

Maynard's allegations are nothing new: Detroit has huge pension and health care burdens; it overestimates its understanding of the American market; it relies too much on emotion and nostalgia, not enough on engineering, research, and quality; its hands are tied by UAW contracts; it relies on huge discounts to motivate buyers; it's suffering brain drain to the import companies; it has too much corporate inertia. And while there is some background information to support each claim, much of it is anecdotal and cherry-picked. For example, while much is made of Nissan's ability to reinvent itself, Chrysler's multiple successful revivals are used only as an example of its inability to be consistent. And although the American companies have improved their vehicle quality dramatically in the last decade, Maynard focuses on the negative and profiles on a handful of individual consumers who happened to buy American lemons.

While I didn't find it especially insightful or interesting, I think it's still a worthwhile read for those who want to build automotive industry knowledge.

Micheline has done an amazing amount of research, interviewing, and deep digging. This recent history of the US car market will blow your mind with the behind the scenes moves of the players in the biz. Do you own a Ford, GM or Chrysler? You should read this for the view of the future of you're favorite make. Do you drive a Japanese or European car? You should read this for the story of how they grew their US presence.
The flow of the myriad of threads..US outsource..Japan builds plants in US.. Germans arrive..Chryslers new Daddy..Hyundai sorts it out..and whats likely to happen next.
Great job by Micheline Maynard. This HAS to be on your car bookshelf..er business bookshelf..eh maybe even US history shelf...Nice.

Even though this book has some valid points, too much space was taken up by the writer telling us how he was going to reveal to us the smartest and easiest methods of making more money. Not until page 63(out of 93 pages) does he start talking directly about his new methods and they boil down to techniques to increase the sales of this book by suggesting that anybody in Network Marketing should hand out this little book to prospects. His style of writing uses lots of words that are capitalised, in italics, bold faced or with quotation marks. This makes the text difficult to read. On the whole I was disappointed by the book and I would not recommend it.

                      Book Description

This book identifies the essential features of the Soviet bloc's economic nexus: the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA), and Gorbachev's reforms. It describes the impact of reforms on the CMEA and speculates on this organization's future. The author links the recent developments within the CMEA with the wide ranging, fundamental changes in the politics and economics of the Soviet bloc. It also examines the connection between the recent upheaval of the Eastern Alliance to the general flux on the entire European continent in anticipation of the post-1992 abolition of internal trade barriers in the European Community. Sobell argues that the predictions of the CMEA's disintegration must be seen in the context of the planned acceleration of West European unification in the 1990s. The EC is poised to become the core of the post Cold-War Europe and will act as a magnet on other European countries, including CMEA members. The CMEA in the age of perestroika, Sobell contends, will continue to maintain its communist facade, but will be a profoundly different organization with increasingly dynamic links with Western Europe.

The primary goal of these seminars was to promote the elaboration of the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) as a means for public policy-makers and the private sector to gain a better perspective of tourism's overall economic impact giving them the opportunity to prioritize limited resources.

The Seminar on Tourism Statistics and Economic Impact Measurement was held at Cairo, Egypt on 15-16 December 1997.
