Book Description

Corporate giving currently accounts for nearly 10 percent of all charitable donations nationwide, and most experts agree that the flow of corporate resources earmarked for nonprofit programs is on the rise. Yet, many fund raisers are held back from tapping this gold mine by the fear they dont know how to "play the system" correctly. When it comes to soliciting corporate funds, even old hands at private fund raising find themselves stymied by the lack of clear-cut answers to such critical questions as: "How do I find out which companies give and how do I obtain information about them?" "Who are the funding decision makers, and how do I appeal to them and cultivate relationships with them?" "What hidden strings and pitfalls should I be aware of when soliciting corporate funds?"

Successful Corporate Fund Raising provides in-depth answers to these and all your questions about finding and winning corporate funds. The distillation of Scott Sheldons more than two decades of experience as a corporate fund raiser, it provides a complete blueprint for developing and maintaining successful corporate fund-raising programs at nonprofits of all sizes.

The book begins with an in-depth exploration of the world of contemporary corporate giving. It explains the key differences between private funding and the "strategic philanthropy" practiced by many corporations. It describes the various forms corporate giving most commonly takes, including cash, in-kind, and volunteerism. And it clearly spells out the motivations, perceptions, expectations, and conditions driving most corporate funding. The lions share of the book is devoted to schooling readers in effective low-cost strategies for locating, obtaining, and managing corporate resources. Organized around the five key components of a successful corporate funding initiative, it provides step-by-step guidance on how to research corporate funders, cultivate relationships with key personnel, solicit corporate resources, evaluate the efficacy of fund-raising initiatives, and manage funded programs. It also supplies a wealth of forms, questionnaires, sample letters and proposals, checklists, and other valuable tools that can easily be adapted for use in your organization. Successful Corporate Fund Raising is an indispensable working resource for all nonprofit fund raisers, development managers, agency executives, and board members.

An experts guide to finding and winning corporate support for your nonprofit organization.

This book shows fund raisers and executives at nonprofits of all sizes how to take advantage of the current corporate funding opportunities. K. Scott Sheldon provides a fresh, insiders look at contemporary corporate giving, and he develops a complete blueprint for developing a corporate fund-raising program. Step-by-step, he walks you through the entire corporate fund-raising process and:

2 out of 5 stars Flap Copy is Better Than the Book.......2002-07-31

Like a movie trailer for a summer blockbuster, the inside flap of K. Scott Sheldon's little book "Successful Corporate Fund Raising: Effective Strategies for Today's Nonprofits" promises much. Corporate giving accounts for 10 percent of all charitable donations, it says. "Yet, many fund raisers are held back from tapping this gold mine by the fear that they don't know how to `play the system' correctly."

But just as many movie trailers are more entertaining than their corresponding movies, the flap copy of "Successful" is better than the book.

"Successful" starts with a 35-page exposition on the history, scope and nature of corporate philanthropy. But Sheldon's case for why a nonprofit would want to go after corporate funding seems halfhearted. He sums it up by saying, "If the past is any predictor of the future it should be safe to say that corporate philanthropy will continue to be a significant source of support for America's nonprofit community for many years to come." It's a circular argument and a limp sentence.

Beginning with chapters six through ten comes the strategy promised by the subtitle. Sheldon outlines his 5-part process for seeking corporate funding: 1). Researching Corporate Giving Programs. 2). Cultivation. 3). Solicitation. 4). Evaluation. 5). Recognition and Stewardship. It's a quibble, but this self-evident approach struck me as being more of a program than a strategy, per se.

Nonetheless it's in these chapters that Sheldon really gets his feet under him. It's evident from these chapters that Sheldon is a careful and punctilious fund raiser. He certainly has the bona fides. Sheldon's been raising money for colleges and universities since 1977, most recently at Arizona State University. And yet even here some of the tactics in these chapters seemed off-putting if not hazardous to corporate fund raising efforts.

During the cultivation process, for instance, he recommends taking a "shopping list of funding priorities" to corporate funders. If they don't respond to one option he suggests moving down the list. While it's certainly smart to come prepared to pitch more than one idea, my experience is that kind of fishing expedition suggests that you haven't done your homework, and seldom pays off. He also advocates hand delivery of corporate proposals, and underscoring the words "Hand Delivery" on both the envelope and cover letter. My experience is that when nonprofits take extravagant measures it shouts to potential funders that you really don't need the money.

Well into the book Sheldon outlines an example of how to apply his five-part process to an employee matching gifts campaign. The money sought in the example is [$$$]. As outlined, Sheldon suggests the following steps; develop a campaign including the five-step process; discover companies in your area that match employee gifts, probably using a proprietary database, software or reference book; identify your constituency, including, hopefully, retirees; cultivate the constituency by mailing a brochure that you devise or a commercially available version; double check gift club eligibility; send one or more matching gift donor response forms and or reminders, perhaps including hand written Post-It Notes; meet to evaluate the program; thank matching donors; review the strategy; call eligible matching donors, offer gift incentives, and/or recruit matching gift captains at companies as needed; ensure that you've exploited companies that match gifts based on employee volunteerism. Whew!

It is here in the thirteenth of 14 chapters, the one in which the author dives into the nitty gritty of corporate fund raising, where the reader asks the Peggy Lee question, "Is That All There Is?" Is all that effort worth [$$$]? Sheldon, in devising the example, implies that it is. The reader, however, is left to wonder.

"Successful" has some errors of fact. WorldCom didn't buy Sprint. Neither Intel nor AT&T are really new companies or new to corporate philanthropy, as the book implies.

He also gives cause marketing sort shrift, devoting just 2-pages to the ever-burgeoning practice. IEG, the big sponsorship outfit in Chicago, projects that cause marketing will total [$$$] million in 2002, almost 10 percent of all corporate giving. Best of all, cause marketing money is frequently unrestricted and generally comes from marketing budgets, not corporate foundation budgets. That fact allows savvy nonprofits to double-dip from a company drawing on marketing dollars and corporate philanthropy dollars both. In giving cause marketing the high fly-by, Sheldon does his readers a disservice.

"Successful" isn't worth adding to your personal library. But if you're looking for the very most basic primer on corporate fund raising, check it out at your local public library.

5 out of 5 stars Good Practial Advice for Those Seeking Corporate Funds.......2000-03-28

Since I am new to fund raising I have been looking for a book that provides practical, hands-on advice on how to raise funds from the corporate sector. This book takes that approach and in a very positive way. It assumes that corporate giving is here to stay and takes the position that there are already enough books available that explore the theoretical reasons why corporations give. I particularly liked the fact that the author sprinkles the text with examples of on-line fund raising and using the Internet. There are good examples of how to submit on-line grant applications and ways to increase your success rate using this new technology. The author also advocates using email when contacting, cultivating and soliciting corporate donors, something that I feel comforatble doing. All in all a job well done!

1 out of 5 stars Regeneration of OLD Information.......2000-03-21

"I was very disappointed with this book. It is promoted as an "indispensable working resource" when in reality it is a rehash of old information much of which is way behind the times (examples -- just passing mention of cause-related marketing, sponsorships, product giving which are all the growth aspects of corporate support for nonprofits). Better to design a strategy for getting money from businesses by reading a book(s) written by someone on the inside of a company giving program -- not a fund-raiser who is on the outside looking in. Books I have found much more helpful are Corporate Social Investing by Curt Weeden (very cutting edge) and The Corporate Contributions Handbook by James Shannon." Carrie Tyrrell

      3 out of 5 stars A Thin Overview.......2007-06-30

Just finished "Start Your Own Information Consultant Business" and I feel like I have a grasp of what the career of an information broker might be like, at least in general terms.

As a person interested in careers in Information Studies, I am always browsing books that have to do with various outlying professions, other than the typical librarian or archival tracks and this seems to be one of them.

For a quick read, this title is perfect. It gives a realistic look at the numbers when it comes to the career, as well as being optimistic enough about the possibilities to still keep a person interested. Though there were some personal details from interviews with real information consultants thrown in, it would have been nice to see some more focus on actual information consultants, i.e. interviews, day-logs etc. As well as more descriptions of actual projects or jobs (there was one made-up example) that a person in the profession might be asked to do would have been useful for me.

Overall, I would recommend browsing this book at a local library but not buying it. It has some good basic information and a useful appendix (filled with organizations and other resources about information consulting) but not enough to make it worth keeping at home.

Note: Due to the 2004 publication date of this book, chapters 4 and 5, which deal with technology (hardware, software), are somewhat outdated. Use them at your own risk.

        Book Description

Executives today recognize that their firms face a wave of retirements over the next decade as the baby boomers hit retirement age. At the other end of the talent pipeline, the younger workforce is developing a different set of values and expectations, which creates new recruiting and employee retention issues. The evolution from an older, traditional, highly-experienced workforce to a younger, more mobile, employee base poses significant challenges, particularly when considered in the context of the long-term orientation towards downsizing and cost cutting. This is a solution-oriented book to address one of the most pressing management problems of the coming years: How do organizations transfer the critical expertise and experience of their employees before that knowledge walks out the door? It begins by outlining the broad issues and providing tools for developing a knowledge-retention strategy and function. It then goes on to outline best practices for retaining knowledge, including knowledge transfer practices, using technology to enable knowledge retention, retaining older workers and retirees, and outsourcing lost capabilities.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Considering as a Future Career Choice.......2007-03-13

I'm not much of a fan of management consultant books as I generally find them quite faddish. They usually state that there is a problem, enter a few amusing anecdotes that illustrate what they mean and follow up with some suggested solutions. In that sense this book is no different, but far closer to the Tom Peters academic style than the "One Minute Manager"

However the problem that it discusses struck a resonant chord in me. Years ago I viewed a tape from Texas Instruments that talked about capturing the knowledge of a distillation column engineer for Campbell's soup in a expert system. The gentleman was retiring soon, and the company didn't know what he knew and felt the best approach was to build a system that modelled his expertise. What I never found out was how successful the approach was in the end. (This story is not in the book.)

The basic problem is that through retirement and attrition key knowlege in many organizations disappears. No one knows who knows what nor the value of that knowledge before it is gone. The problem is exascerbated by the huge lump of the baby boomers when they retire. The anecdotes include NASA no longer knowing how to get to the moon any more using Saturn V technology (the plans are lost), Sandia labs needing to retain the knowledge of how to build, test and dismantle nuclear weapons, given that they haven't built or tested a weapon in years, the cost rediscovering wiring and conduits in building that we no longer have the blueprints of. The solution lies in identification, sharing, managing and storytelling. Various success stories are brought out to support the points. Strategies such as Communities of Practice and the U.S. Army's AAR (After Action Review): 1) What was supposed to happen 2) What actually happened 3) Why were there differences 4) What can we learn for next time) are covered.

What de Long doesn't deal with is the cost of collecting this knowledge vs the value received on a per item basis. Localized cost for globalized benefit usually plays poorly in most organizations.

Still the book is well written and enjoyable. I've always been one to define my own job functions. It suggests to me that there is a potential role in any organization as a professional liason between groups and generations of expertise - a possible career choice. The book emphasises the value that is contributed by individuals in the workplace and gets you thinking about the need to transmit the legacy not only of things done well but of things done poorly.

A book that inspires that kind of introspection is worth picking up and reading.

4 out of 5 stars Protecting the Eroding Treasure of Knowledge.......2005-10-29

The generation of workers that is moving into retirement now-the Traditionalists, followed by the huge (76.4 million) Baby Boomer cohort-has experienced an unprecedented era of change and growth. Workers in this period have typically stayed with one employer for many years, accumulating experience, continuity, and a wealth of knowledge that is principally captured within the individual. Now, as these workers retire, they're taking that invaluable knowledge with them; it's not being captured effectively to be used by successors. This loss is potentially a tremendous risk and cost for employers and for society.

The book, written by a a research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Age Lab, is organized into three sections. The opening chapters explain the high cost of losing intellectual capital. The author provides an abundance of delicious examples of how the departure of workers with unique, uncaptured knowledge and experience will wreak havoc in practically every environment. He certainly makes his case, and maybe even overdoes it. I felt, at times, that I was getting bogged down in an almost repetitious litany of exposure to the problem.

Part two takes us into evaluating knowledge retention practices. Readers will gain insights into developing the infrastructure and the process of preserving what people have absorbed, but not recorded or passed along to others. Again, DeLong presents a large volume of information, examples, and case studies-so much material that it seems to get in the way of the message. The small type size and book design make the book even more difficult to read. The content is strong, but the presentation was not holding my attention. I found my eyes glazing over on a number of occasions as I drifted, then pulled myself back to the message.

The final section of the book moves us into implementation, again with example after example of what various companies are doing to protect their intellectual and operational knowledge. There is unquestionably a tremendous amount of value in these pages; it's just a bit difficult to draw it out without some serious concentration.

The book concludes with a strong section of notes and a comprehensive index.

        5 out of 5 stars Lost Knowledge--A must read.......2005-05-27

        Lost Knowledge-a review

I enjoyed Lost Knowledge immensely. I am not a corporate manager,
but I found the book's insights and suggestions interesting, amusing and valuable. It's also incredibly readable. The anecdotes and stories are clever and compelling. The chapter dealing with the transfer of "explicit knowledge" got me thinking again about a woman I had known, the assistant to the head of an important organization, who had worked with him for several decades. She knew everything about anything. One day she was suddenly hit by a bus and killed and all her knowledge went with her. It took three people to replace her and even then...

The chapter on transferring "tacit" knowledge was also right on target. I didn't realize, until I turned my business over to colleagues, just how much of what I did (dealing with vendors, clients, buyers, employees) was either instinctual or learned and nowhere written down. This book also made me reexamine the current spate of industrial mishaps and accidents. I wonder how much of what happens (train derailments, chemical spills, etc) are a result of what DeLong suggests is departed experience.

The author identifies many hidden traps and challenges of lost knowledge and explains them clearly. Like the knowledge it so earnestly beseeches us to protect, this book should be kept and revisited as questions and challenges arise. If I were running a business again, I would consider this required reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Usefull.......2005-03-25

This book deals with a fascinating and complex issue facing organizations today. It's full of compelling examples that show how losing knowledge can seriously hurt organizational performance. DeLong provides a comprehensive approach to the challenges posed by boomer retirements, and the solutions he describes will be very helpful to managers looking for a way to attack this growing problem.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Suggestions for Better Knowledge Management.......2004-08-29

Around the developed countries of the world, knowledge workers will be retiring at a fast clip in the next five to ten years. In some companies and organizations that have done poor succession planning or have been wracked by layoffs, this impact will come sooner. Professor DeLong has done a number of helpful case studies to document the harm that these retirements can cause, and describes the questions that organizations must ask themselves if they are to avoid dangerous and expensive knowledge gaps.

The bulk of the book is a detailed look at the effectiveness of knowledge management techniques in a variety of companies rather than a focus on the retirement problem. I was most impressed with the parts of the book that began with chapter 10 and continued to the end. If you have experience with the subject of knowledge management, you can skip the parts of the book that precede chapter 10. If you are new to the subject, you will find those parts helpful . . . but slowly developed. Stick with it. The material after chapter 9 is worth the wait.

The central reality of knowledge management is that few executives are very interested in it, many retiring workers don't really want to share what they know and many new workers don't feel like they have much to learn from older workers. I was delighted to see that Professor DeLong was familiar with those problems and makes a number of helpful suggestions for overcoming those psychological stalls to maintaining and improving knowledge.

Lest you think that the subject really isn't very important, you will be chilled to learn that there's a substantial risk of organizations forgetting how to disarm nuclear devices built in the 1970s and how to repair nuclear reactors built in the 1960s. In many other situations, life and death are at risk.

                  Book Description

A behind-the-scenes expos頯f why our electricity system is headed for a state of emergency-and what can be done to head it off

Most people don't realize that skyrocketing global energy demand and economic growth severely affect the supply of electricity. Between production (power plants) and delivery is an antiquated, "third-world" transmission grid that is in desperate need of hardening against breakdowns, terrorist attacks, inadequate carrying capacity, and operational obsolescence. And while electricity doesn't hold the headlines or dramatic power of oil, the ability to ensure its uninterrupted supply at a reasonable price is even more essential to global survival and prosperity. Lights Out is today's most detailed, in-depth examination of this largely unreported looming energy crisis. Written by one of the world's top electricity industry experts, this powerful book covers numerous hot button economic and political issues-free markets versus regulation; energy independence versus foreign imports; nuclear power, global warming, and other environmental issues; and much more. Beyond just uncovering and illuminating the problems, however, it proposes a comprehensive road map of technical solutions and regulatory reform from both the production and demand sides of the equation-a framework for rethinking, rebuilding, and enhancing the entire electricity production and delivery infrastructure. Prescriptive and provocative, Lights Out will redefine the simmering debate on how the world can-and must-act now to head off a global catastrophe, one that could eventually wreak even more havoc than the ongoing oil crisis.

Jason Makansi is the President of Pearl Street, Inc., a consulting firm; Principal of PS Liquidity Advisors, an advisory service for energy technology companies raising capital; and Executive Director of the Energy Storage Council, a public-policy advocacy organization. A prolific author, respected industry thought leader, and seasoned communicator, Mr. Makansi has been analyzing the technological, business, and regulatory issues in electricity production and delivery for over twenty-five years. He earned a BS in chemical engineering from Columbia University. His earlier books include An Investor’s Guide to the Electricity Economy, also published by John Wiley & Sons, and Managing Steam: An Engineering Guide to Commercial, Industrial, and Utility Systems.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Read.......2007-09-17

I had high hopes for this book, but it's a very disappointing book. And I'm amazed at the reviews by others of the book. Makansi knows a lot, but he does a poor job of communicating precisely the problems he perceives with our electricity grid. The book is lively and eccentric, but very poorly edited.

                  I think it's a waste of time.

I happen to know Jason Makansi (from the long-ago past) and believe him to be a very capable person, but he could write a much better book if forced to show some discipline in the writing process.

5 out of 5 stars Makansi lays it out rather well.......2007-08-16

As someone who's got a couple years under my belt in the industy, I thought this was a great story for someone with no knowledge or someone that has been in the business 30+ years.

There's no preaching about renewable solutions that won't happen or the concept of a hydrogen economy... Just down and dirty dealing with the state of the industry, and what needs to happen on the generation, transmission and consumer side of the equation.

The book is very up-to-date, provides a little bit of history and a solid solution for what needs to happen for the United States to succeed in upcoming challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Lights Out provides a roadmap for keeping the U.S. strong.......2007-07-22

Electricity provides the fundamental power that drives our economy. The complex quilt of regulation, special interest groups, ownership, and consumer behavior make it a very difficult industry to comprehend and manage. This eclectic set of interests obfuscates the issues that we must address to keep our economy strong and our environment clean. Too often zealots high jack the debate putting our future at risk.

"Lights Out" sorts through these interests and presence a coherent way to insure our countries electricity supply while protecting the environment. The author has accomplished the rare feat of writing a very readable book on a complex technical topic. Many parts of the book read as a novel. I just about finished it in one reading. The book accomplishes its goals of: describing the electric generation and distribution industry, providing a roadmap for the future, and call each of us to action. It looks at the challenge from several dimensions and ends with a call to personal action. I found myself in agreement with virtually all of the recommendations with the exception of placing some constraints on the financial aspects of private equity entering the market. I understand the author's concerns for open and transparent operations. If these are insured I believe that open financial markets will enhance the solution not hinder it.

My favorite part of the book was the call to personal accountability. As Pogo said, "we've met the enemy and he is us." Each of us can play a role in the solution by: simply conserving electricity through changing our light bulbs, turning off equipment, insulating our houses, and running appliances more intelligently. We can also play a role by reading about the industry; abandoning our prejudices, opening our mind, and writing our elected officials and holding them accountable.

The point of the books is that the future of our electric supply system merits national attention. If we get involved, we can make this happen.

If you wonder how our country may be vulnerable in respect to the next national disaster, either via home-grown or foreign terrorist strike or climactic catastrophe or even simple human error....

If you are frustrated with recent power outages affecting your business or neighborhood and don't know why they are (and will keep) occurring...

If you wonder how we can get from "here" to "there" regarding our current reliance on overseas oil and fossil fuel-generated power to a more reliable, efficient and sustainable form of energy supply and transmission...

If you are someone in the industry who is frustrated with the merger and acquisition aspect of making the business end work and need both optimism and practical ideas for growth in this field.....

If you are, like me, a consumer who just wants to know what is behind the wall...

The answers, the ideas, and the possibilities are in this book.

I read "Lights Out" in two days. Informational without being grossly technical, provocative without demonizing any particular person or group, and at times bitingly funny, Jason Makansi writes in an accessible way about a complex subject, drawn from his deep background in the field and an honest, almost Trumanesque prose style. With no real understanding of how my lights go on, or any more than a consumer's investment in this industry--I was engaged from start to finish. This book sounds the alarm, describes the problems, and ignites a passion for taking the next step before we are facing a greater crisis.

For example, in the chapter titled, "Savvy Consumption, Empowering Ratepayers" he writes, "What if you also quantified the value of energy independence.....Imagine going to a filling station and seeing not only the price per gallon, but the hidden cost per gallon to protect our petroleum supply lines, fight wars in countries with oil and natural gas reserves, and lead global military defense!"

Did I mention he writes provocatively?

Regarding some of the dilemmas facing those in the industry he writes, "Both strategies for growth---'if we build it, Wall Street will come' and 'If we merge, business will surge'--are giving utilities fits. The problem is that delays, the money wasted on lawyers and consultants, and the general malaise that overtakes an organization under siege, drain time and money from real needs, like modernizing the infrastructure."

Did I mention he doesn't waste time demonizing but cuts straight to the problem?

And finally, from the chapter, "A Vision For The Future" he writes, "Imagine going to your local electricity store, just like you go to a car dealership, and picking out the model you want custom-built into your new home. What this industry needs more than anything else are entrepreneurial companies that provide home-and business-based electricity systems with the same quality and attention to detail of a home entertainment system: Maybe I want one that makes me feel better because it offers the lowest carbon dioxide emissions. Maybe I just want to be the 'baddest' dude in the neighborhood and pick out something that rumbles when I crank it up."

Did I mention he is funny?

There is so much more in this book, about the supply, the demand, the global structure of our fossil fuel reliance and the impending energy needs of other countries, to what is, in his view, the greatest concern: transmission. Along with a reasonable advocacy for taking a second look at nuclear power generating plants, (something I was previously opposed to), he also includes exciting ideas for new technologies and research, such as recycling the waste heat generated from all sources not just power plants, to a home meter that clearly and understandably shows the consumer how much energy is being used and when, to the idea of a national commission to unite and oversee power transmission from state to state. As Mr. Makansi puts it, "Why not?"

Can we reliably keep the lights on at our current levels of energy consumption? Are our grids vulnerable to sabotage and attack? Are there intermediate solutions that can be made within the industry and by our government that are practical, safe, climate sensitive and affordable now? Can I personally change the way I consume and view my own energy use? And what steps can be taken to affect the change that is needed?

Lights Out connects all interests on the way toward a more logical, more sustainable, more humane and renewable use of energy in today's world. The only question remaining: When will we take the next step?

                    Book Description

One issue of great importance to modern policymakers is the relationship between globalization and economic crisis. With unprecedented trends towards globalization (in part propelled by developments in information technology), the repercussions of economic crisis are more profound than ever before, particularly for developing countries. What Global Economic Crisis? bridges the gap between theory and policy by examining the destabilizing effects of financial crises on economic growth, stability and development. It also presents some innovative ideas intended to inform the design of institutions able to foster more effective international policy coordination.

From the supplier: Montana's businesses and industries will likely find new opportunities in the global marketplace as the 21st century approaches. The state is already firmly entrenched in the world market for grain but it might discover more opportunities with the transforming economies of the different nations worldwide. Montana might also experience an increased worldwide demand for gold, silver, copper and zinc, which are metals the state produces.
