4 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis Applications In The Global Currency Markets Second Edition.......2005-07-16

Having always been intrigued by the FX market but also having never traded a day in my life I bought this book and his other with the intent of learning the basics. I wanted to get an overall view of wha the FX was and how I could trade in it. I believe it has done what I wanted and helped me to greatly understand the MANY different aspects of trading. I would say that it covers the basic aspects while only slightly delving deeper into some of the more complex issues. I believe one of the greatest things about this book is that it has helped me to figure out which directions I need to pursue as well as which I don't. I have read some other comments on this book and am rather appalled that people actually take the time to make negative and unsubstantiated claims about the author, his knowledge and experience. If you are disattisfied with the book, state your reasons why and perhaps make a constructive recommendation. Otherwise, all you're doing is wasting my time. This book is probably not for someone who is experienced and has a fair command of their trading. For someone who is looking for a clear, concise discourse on the basics this is definitely the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars To be critical is to be constructive........2005-02-05

If this book is very bad, I am glad to learn it from people who consider themselves knowledgeable and who have read it. But should it be possible for such critics to propose another reference which they appreciated the content. It would be much more instructive for readers who are shopping for quality books.

1 out of 5 stars Not any help at all..........2004-02-02

As a Foreign Currency Dealer, I was NOT helped from this book at all! Actually the title is misleading since he does NOT concentrate on FX, he only shows some graph examples using FX crosses instead of stocks... The author just refers to a lot of TA indicators only reviewing their typical Buy and Sell signals that are written in every TA book, and furthermore the sections are very bad structured. Really very very disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Very good book.......2003-08-08

This is a very good book. If you want to start trading currency online (like me) you must read this book first.

5 out of 5 stars excellent value!!.......2003-03-21

I haven't completed the book but if I never read another page it's well worth what I payed compared to some prices of other simular books on the market. I don't know what the initial cost was, but those who wrote the unfavorable reviews should have waited to purchase. Maybe they would have been more positive.

      Description:
A large literature on the appropriate sequencing of financial liberalization suggests that removing capital controls prematurely may contribute to currency instability. This paper investigates whether legal restrictions on international capital flows are associated with greater currency stability. We employ a comprehensive panel data set of 69 developing economies over the 1975-1997 period, identifying 160 currency crises. We control for macroeconomic, political, and institutional characteristics that influence the probability of a currency crisis, employ alternative measures of restrictions on international payments, and account for possible joint causality between the likelihood of a currency attack and the imposition of capital controls. We find evidence that restrictions on capital flows do not effectively insulate economies from currency problems; rather, countries with less restrictive capital controls and more liberalized regimes appear to be less prone to speculative attacks.

          Book Description

In an intriguing synthesis of current theories of international finance, trade, and industrial organization, Paul Krugman presents a provocative analysis of the extraordinary volatility of exchange rates in the 1980s.

Krugman focuses on imperfect integration of the world economy, showing how this has become both a cause and effect of exchange rate instability. He outlines the costs and benefits of recent flexible-exchange rate policies and offers fresh insight into why the models that worked in the first half of the 1980s don't work in the growing uncertainty of the latter half. Krugman's analysis is succinct and accessible, with technical appendixes that offer powerful backing to his ideas.

Exchange Rate Instability contains a surprising reevaluation of the author's own work on exchange rates. Krugman questions the need for further devaluation of the dollar, arguing that uncertainty - rather than the lack of costcompetitiveness explains the failure of current policies to reduce the United States trade deficit. He proposes an eventual return to fixed exchange rates.

Paul R. Krugman is Professor of Economics at MIT Exchange Rate Instability inaugurates the Lionel Robbins Lectures series.

            Book Description

In most cases the problems caused by financial globalization are identical in various countries, which is why it is especially important to develop some standard solutions. Nevertheless, it is also doubtless that economic "recipes" for "small" and "big" countries can be different and it would be a mistake to apply only a uniform approach to all of them.

The book evaluates an international financial system development potential in the context of "corporate crises" started in the USA and a probable impact on international financial markets and business activities. With the introduction of the Euro, a "new three-pole world currency system" was established. In this connection, two quite sensational forecasts made during the last two years regarding the collapse of the US Dollar are analyzed. These forecasts make a pretty "gloomy picture" of the future of both the US Dollar and the international monetary system.

The book draw reader's attention to global exchange rate instability and its implications for Georgia. It is demonstrated that as a small economy, Georgia cannot have any substantial influence on global economic developments; however, if it succeeds to pursue more-or-less reasonable economic policy, it may generate some positive results, or at least minimize negative ones.

              Description:
In this paper we provide new empirical evidence on the relationship between market power, as measured by market share, and incomplete exchange rate pass-through. The role of market power is examined in the context of a Cournot model, which is estimated with data relating to Japan's presence in the US market. To test for the existence of possible aggregation biases due to sectoral heterogeneity, estimations are carried out on time series data for the total economy and the manufacturing sector and on panel data for five manufacturing industries at the three-digit level of classification, using the Johansen multivariate cointegration technique and the recently developed by [Larsson, R., Lyhagen, J., & Lothgren, M. (2001). Likelihood-based cointegration tests in heterogeneous panels. Econometrics Journal, 4, 109-142] multivariate panel cointegration technique. Hypotheses about the degree of pass-through are tested as restrictions on estimated equilibrium pricing equations and robustness tests are performed. The empirical results indicate that Japanese firms have market power and this validates the use of an imperfect competition model. However, it appears that market power is not the only element on which to base the analysis of the incomplete exchange rate pass-through by Japanese firms.

Joan Flanagan's The Grass Roots Fundraising Book is the best investment a small nonprofit can make. Full of solid, practical advice, it's helped thousands of grass roots groups take control of their futures by learning how to leap off the fundraising cliff and generate the resources they need.

I logged on today looking for a copy to give to a community group I'm working with, and had Amazon had it, it would have been the tenth or twelfth copy I've bought over the years since it was published. If you need it, keep looking. It's still out there.

Sally Huang Nissen, a consultant and trainer specializing in diversity issues has provided us with what we need to know about a well-honed tool for bonding across cultures, races and genders. Modestly minimizing her own contribution, she begins by telling us of the rich history that Dialog Groups have had in the diversity movement, and of the benefits they have brought to those participating in them. She outlines the philosophy and psychology that create the principles of dialogue. She clearly distinguishes dialogue in terms of its attitudes and behaviors from other forms of discourse such as discussion and debate.

Following this solid introduction, she helps us understand the power and dynamics of the group engaged in dialogue and its stages of development. She tells us how to tap into the particular potential for synergy that people bring with them to group work.

From this point on, Dialog Groups becomes even more of a hands-on manual for the creation and direction of the groups themselves. It addresses how to form them and create the norms and ingredients for success.

The heart of the book lies in its ability to educate us in what it means to be an effective leader of such a group. Nissen does this first by examining the qualities of and formation of effective group leadership and then giving us a step-by-step agenda for initiating, managing, maintaining and bringing dialogue groups to a successful conclusion. The book is experience-based and continually harkens back to the hands-on learnings that Nissen and fellow practitioners have brought to the process of building multicultural community through dialogue groups.

The book contains several useful appendices: a profile form for enrolling participants and a self-observation form for monitoring the group's own effectiveness. There is a leader survey, which is more of a feedback form on the effectiveness of the dialog process itself, and an impact survey that enables the user to articulate how the dialogue group has affected him or her.

Throughout the book we feel the value-added of diversity as Nissen draws on her own Chinese-American heritage as well as occasionally from the work of her brother Chung Liang Huang (familiarly, Al Huang), well known in the history of the human potential movement and among Gestalt Practitioners.

At a time when e-Learning takes all the headlines, this is an important book because it is about those qualities of training, leadership and group process that will abide in face-to-face encounters and are both essential and irreplaceable to human progress in both the workplace and the larger society.

This study investigates the role of credit rating agencies in international financial markets. With an index of speculative market pressure it is analyzed whether sovereign ratings changes have an impact on the financial stability in emerging market economies. The event study analysis indicates that sovereign rating changes have substantial influence on the size and volatility of emerging markets lending. The empirical results are significantly stronger in the case of government's downgrades and negative imminent rating actions than in the case of agencies' positive rating adjustments. Sovereign rating changes anticipated by market participants have a smaller impact on financial markets in emerging economies.

We use the spreads of emerging market bonds traded in secondary markets to study investors' perception of country risk. Specifically, we ask whether investors apply the ''sovereign ceiling,'' which says that no firm is more creditworthy than its government. To do this we compare the spreads of bonds issued by firms to those of bonds issued by the firms' home governments. We find several cases where a firm's bond trades at a lower spread than that of the firm's government, indicating that investors do not always apply the sovereign ceiling. Bonds for which this is true tend to have substantial export earnings and/or a close relationship with either a foreign firm or with the home government.

                                        Description:
The country credit rating is a key covariate of the cost and availability of international financing for an economy. This paper models ratings as a function of expected repayment capacity, derives empirical implications, and tests them using the most comprehensive consistent series of sovereign credit ratings. These are the Institutional Investor ratings which have been widely used in the international finance literature. We report several stylized facts: volatility clustering, asymmetric adjustments, and serial correlation in credit revisions, especially in Emerging countries. These features are consistent with rational behavior of credit rating teams and have important implications in assessing the long term risk of international investments.
