    Book Description

This 1926 survey, written by a distinguished social and economic historian, examines the role of religion in the rise of capitalism. Arguing that material acquisitiveness is morally wrong and a corrupting social influence, the author draws upon his profound knowledge of labor and politics to show how concentrated wealth distorts economic policies.

                          Book Description

The process of European monetary unification (EMU) is approaching a critical juncture. At the beginning of 1998 the member states of the European Union will decide whether or not to go ahead with their monetary union and determine which countries qualify as members. There is a high likelihood that Stage III of the Maastricht process--monetary union itself--will commence on January 1, 1999, and that a single currency, to be known as the Euro, will replace the national currencies of the founding member states at the beginning of 2002. Even if it is delayed, Stage III is likely to go forward soon thereafter.

Whether EMU is feasible and desirable is contested among economists and politicians alike. This book sheds light on the controversy by considering seven major aspects: (1) what the theory of optimum currency areas reveals about the EMU project, (2) how Europe compares with existing monetary unions such as the United States, (3) the crisis in the European monetary system and the feasibility of stabilizing exchange rates in the absence of monetary unification, (4) fiscal policy and EMU, (5) labor markets and EMU, (6) the connections between monetary and political union, and (7) EMU and the rest of the world.

The author views EMU as neither a grand achievement nor a terrible blunder, but as a process. He argues that the effects of monetary unification will depend on how it is structured and governed, and how quickly Europe's markets adapt to a single currency. The process of monetary unification will not end in 1999 or 2002; rather, the structure and operation of Europe's monetary union will continue to evolve for years to come.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-06-02

The colorful, almost cartoonish, look and feel of Roberta Roesch's book will probably put off people who prefer to have their solutions shown to them in black and white. And that's a shame because this book is an excellent time-management resource for everyone. Roesch created her book for people who "don't have time to read time books," and did a really wonderful job. By eschewing the standard book format, she may have alienated some readers who prefer their books to look serious. But it is precisely this format that encourages readers who wouldn't normally buy time management books to give this one a chance.

You can read this book straight through, but its most valuable sections stand on their own. A number of questionnaires help you determine whether the material in a section covers an area that concerns you. The book is also peppered with "minutes matter," call-out boxes that offer short time-saving tips. It caters to those with short attention spans, but without being trite. It is particularly useful for those who have purchased time-management books before, but gave up on them out of boredom or frustration. We recommend this book to anyone interested in time-management. In short, if you don't have the time for time management, this book is for you.

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (11/06)

"Build the Life You Want and Still Have Time to Enjoy It!" was co-written by the father/daughter duo of Jim Claitor and Colleen Contreras. Both authors use their expertise to teach us "how to transform how you feel about yourself, your time and your life." In it we learn our personal styles and how to best work with them.

This book is divided into three main sections:
                                  1. How to make time your friend.
                                  2. Monitoring the E-Factor with six key steps.
                                  3. Clean Desk/Messy Desk - A Personalized Solution for Mastering Your Work Load. This includes key steps 7-9.

In the appendix, the book includes two valuable assessments. The first one is "The Personalized Style Assessment" and the second one is "The E-Factor Self-Assessment: Gauging the Impact of the Emotional Elements." I took these assessments first so that I knew where I fit in to the areas being addressed in the reading. There are two main types of people--creative types and linear types. Workable solutions are offered to help each type. A lot of the valuable information doesn't rely on a specific type of person; it applies to most of us. For example, if we get our emotional factors under control and use the organizational tools that work consistently, we all can succeed.

The authors incorporate humor and compassion into "Build the Life You Want." The problem is referred to as "The Monster." Fun yet meaningful cartoons are included to show the Monster in action and how it affects us. They also offer a lot of simple questions that promote self-reflection and offer steps to take that are manageable. Useful charts are included that help sum up what is being said.

I really found this book to be helpful. It made me aware of where a lot of my stress comes from and how I personally contribute to it. I am really good at getting caught up in my emotions and see how that slows me down. I also discovered that I am a "Sticky Tab" addict. That will be a hard addiction to conquer! I plan on discussing it on my next team retreat for work.

I think that "Building the Life You Want and Still Have Time to Enjoy It!" would make a great gift for someone that you know who is overwhelmed by having a lack of time. It is less than 150 pages so it will not take up too much of their time! It is also a great gift to give to oneself.

This book is a fast-paced, yet crystal-clear guide that shows readers how easy and versatile Access 97 can be. Readers will quickly learn how to publish their databases to the web and discover how to put Access 97's Wizards to work in designing databases, creating forms and reports, and analyzing their information with queries. Other items covered include macros, graphs, menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, and sharing information with other Office 97 applications!

3 out of 5 stars Read it, but think for yourself also.......2000-05-16

The biggest problem is that this book shows you how to do things but it does not really explain how things are done, so if you need to apply the knowledge to a more real world problem, like the ones I face at work, then it becomes hard to extrapolate and reason to get it to work the way you want it to. The book is a quick start, and you know when you buy a product like this, that it will not go into too much detail, so I was not expecting that much from the book, hence the 3 stars.

It will get your hands dirty, it will not teach you how to create those databases that will make you a millionaire or give you that 6 digit salary. Enjoy!

This was the worst book I have ever read on using any computer program in my 20+ years of information management. I was simply looking for an easy reference book that would quickly point me in the right direction on the interface between Access 97 and the Internet. Instead, it's just a regurgitation of the "Help" documents already included with the Access 97 program. The most unbelievable part is that this author keeps promising to explain more in the next chapter - imagine my surprise when there was NO next chapter on the subject! This book is going back to Amazon. What a waste of time and shipping money. Save yourself some time and money and read the help info already included with Access 97. What a joke!

I was hoping for some information on vb with access. But, over all it will make a good access reference book.

Before reading Mr. Neibauer's book, I had "winged it" when it came to Access. Sure, I created forms for data entry, which created my databases and subsequent kindergarten-like reports. This book is full of techniques and clues I wish I had had before I took flight. Like a great novel, once I started reading it and following the exercises, I couldn't stop. Six hours later I feel like I have mastered the art of database management. Thank you Mr. Neibauer for making it so easy!

4 out of 5 stars A great book for couples.......1997-06-23

This book could easily have been titled, "More Time for Golf", "More Time for Sailing," or anything else you'd like to have more time to enjoy. Already in its second printing, it is geared toward couples without children who need to reduce the stress and conflict that occurs when two people share living quarters.

In Chapter One, the author offers a Timely Tip: "Less stuff=more time. Learn the importance of getting rid of stuff. You can always get more stuff, but you can never get more time."

Demonstrating how more time can be created for fun and romance by reducing clutter and chaos, it is an easy-to-read-and-implement guide for such topics as "The Five Steps for Eliminating Closet Clutter" and "Putting Paper in Its Place."

Of particular interest was "The Business of Running a Household." Comparing a household to running a small business, the author discusses the importance of having a home office, even if it means using the kitchen table for a desk and a box for a filing cabinet, for such tasks as processing mail, paying bills, and maintaining files and tax records.

Every couple should read this book, whether they are in the early-love stage or celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. It has become my gift of choice for this season's showers and weddings

Raising children is one of the most important jobs you will ever have... and one that comes without a training manual. First-time parents can feel overwhelmed and often neglect to nurture their relationship with each other while they take the first steps into the transition to parenthood.
