2 out of 5 stars Not A Get Rich Quick Pitch, But Outdated.......2002-06-28

This book presents a lot of very practical information about the basics of formulating a 900 number concept, evaluating the concept, getting started and marketing. Particularly someone with no marketing background could benefit from some of the promotional/advertising tips.

However, the book was last updated in--I believe--'96. It basically predates the Internet as we know it. Most of the companies mentioned in this book seem to have gone out of business or have exited the 900 number business.

900 ain't what it used to be. This book was written during a different era. I only wish there were an equally sober and well done, but more up to date resource ...

                      Book Description

Remember the leisure predictions of the 1960s? By now we were supposed to be living a life of shorter work weeks, secure jobs, virtually no housework and a lot of free time. What happened? Most of us now can't even remember what free time feels like. How did we change from a leisure-focused society to one of the most time-stressed populations in the world? The future of leisure in North America is as rosy or dreary as we want to make it because it hinges on some tough decisions that each of us has to make. It's Not About Time challenges us to rethink leisure, but in simple, practical terms that are meaningful in daily life. It enlightens us on the range of everyday factors that impact our ability to experience leisure. Finally, it empowers us to negotiate our own leisure path, both now and in the future.

                      Book Description

Let's face it: You don't know half as much as you let on. Sure, you were able to skate through college based on a decent work ethic and the ability to use words like "postmodernity" in appropriate situations. Also, you had good hair. And maybe you're still afloat after a couple years on the job, despite having just recently discovered that a 401(k) is not quite the same as the 4-1-1, yo. But now life is catching up with you. You're realizing that last night's pizza is probably not the healthiest breakfast food. That romantic relationships are hard. And that credit cards can be trouble.

So basically you've got two choices. Option A: You ride this seat-of-your-pants thing as long as possible until you lose your pants altogether. Good luck with that. Wear clean underwear.

Or Option B: Buy this book. It's helpfully titled Things You Should Know by Now: A Mini-Life Manual for the Quarterly Aged. Inside you'll find a collection of tips, suggestions, step-by-step outlines and self-important asides from twentysomething author Jason Boyett, all intended to help you navigate the choppy waters of love, work, money and healthy living. It's entertaining! It's occasionally insightful! And there's a chapter on How to Cook Eggs! Things You Should Know by Now is, in fact, the instruction manual on how to live and actually enjoy life, and that's not just back-of-the-book boasting. OK, it is, but still... you need to read this. Seriously.

                      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Things you ALREADY know by now.......2007-08-23

This book is mistitled. It should be called "Things you already know by now and wish you hadn't wasted $12 to find out." I think that about covers it..... Oh, one good thing, my bf found a smoothie recipe he really liked. Not sure that alone was worth $12 though!

4 out of 5 stars common sense that's not so common .......2006-10-12

This book does have alot of common sense information. However, it is a helpful tool for basic things to know. It won't change your life incredibly and I don't believe that was the point. The point was basic stuff that everyone should know by the time they're in their twenties. You'll most likely know most of the stuff he's talking about (such as running is great excerise and optimism is better than pessimism). but It's good reinforcement for that sort of stuff. It's helpful little tidbits on life that serves it's purpose. It is organized into basic categories and can seem pretty random for some. But again, It's just random tips on how to live life. It won't save your life, but won't hurt it either.

2 out of 5 stars Some good some bad advice but mostly just one person's opinion.......2005-11-28

This book is very uneven. Some of the advice is ridiculous such as having a pest inspector in to check your house on a monthy basis.

Some is just platitudes such as "the best way to live is generously". Well maybe as long as you limit your exposure to being ripped off.

The financial advice is good for the most part.

Nowhere does the author say how he knows all this and why we should believe him. You don't know which advice is good and which is not, if you don't already know.

There is a lot to learn in life, so by all means read this book but don't rely too heavily on it.

1 out of 5 stars Stupid, pointless, and disorganized.......2005-09-01

I need to know how to perform a card trick by the time I'm quarter aged? Maybe if I was a magician that might be useful. I thought this book might be a little deeper than that, but all it is is a bunch of little tidbits of useless, and sometimes incorrect, information.
For example, in the section on credit card debt, he advises you to get out of debt by slicing up your credit card and then canceling the account. Cutting the card up is fine, but he neglects to mention that canceling a card can actually HURT your credit score, because your credit rating is based on your debt as a percentage of the total credit available to you. So if you cancel a card, you have less total credit available. Even the most basic books on debt will tell you this, which leads me to beleive this guy did absolutely no research, at least in this area.
And.. a chapter on how to buy groceries? Uh.. if you made it to "quarter-aged", I'm pretty sure you have a basic idea of how to purchase groceries. His tips include making a list, and eating before you go.. wow thanks for the ground-breaking advice.
I also found his "humourous" puns to be quite annoying and so numerous as to be most of the filler in this book. And they're not even funny. There are also way too many personal stories about this guys life. I suppose one of the "Things I Should Know by Now" is that he was afraid of the pie man on Sesame Street. Who cares!
A total waste of time and energy. Most things I already knew, the others I didn't care about. I guess I'm ahead of the game then.

                      5 out of 5 stars Ooh! I can make a smoothie!.......2004-08-09

I'm actually 21, transitioning to another new school, and only beginning to realize that, statistically speaking, I only have 9 more years of life before entering adulthood. This book managed to be informative while catering wit to my short attention span. What's great about the author is his very casual, almost big-brother tone. I found some of the chapters perfectly answered the EXACT questions I usually think about (like an FAQ for 21-year-olds: dating, finances, and smoothie-making) and others to be things I hadn't thought about, but were equally compelling ("the value of stories" and "what marriage isn't"). A lot of my friends are starting off in their own apartments for this upcoming year, and they've thumbed through it and found helpful advice as well. I highly recommend it for people looking for a twenty-anything birthday gift, or a college graduation gift.

                      Book Description

It’s Napa versus Sonoma, and the antics are rampant!

When acclaimed Vanity Fair journalist Alan Deutschman came to the California wine country as the lucky house guest of very rich friends, he was surprised to find a civil war being fought between Napa Valley, which epitomized prestige and wealthy excess, and neighboring Sonoma Valley, a ragtag bohemian enclave so stubbornly backward that rambunctious chickens wandered freely through town. In A Tale of Two Valleys, Deutschman wittily captures these stranger-than-fiction locales and uncorks the hilarious absurdities of life among the wine world’s glitterati. The cast of characters brims with eccentrics, egomaniacs, and a mysterious man in black who crashed the elegant Napa Valley Wine Auction before proceeding to pay a half-million dollars for a single bottle. What develops is nothing less than the struggle for the soul of one of America’s last bits of paradise.

                      A San Francisco Chronicle bestseller

                      2 out of 5 stars Feels like a run-on magazine article.......2007-09-19

Echoing what others have written, this is an extremely light account of the Sonoma and Napa wine regions. Unclear plot line (is there one?) and very little depth on any of the subjects that could have made it interesting (how about at least letting us know how the Screaming Eagle tasted?). If you are looking for a short, light hearted read with some reasonably interesting tidbits on Sonoma and Napa, this is an ok read. If you're looking for an ejoyable read with depth and history, this isn't it - your time would be much better spent reading House of Mondavi.

                      3 out of 5 stars Sour Grapes.......2007-09-19

Chock full of interesting characters and insightful observations, A Tale of Two Valleys is an entertaining read that ultimately disappoints for lack of a plot or central character. Deutschman stumbled on the subject matter to produce a West Coast version of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, but he seems to lack the creative instincts. He tells us too much and too little about himself, as if he can't decide how much of a presence he should have in his story. That said, his tidbits on the French Laundry ("an excerise in literary and aesthetic showmanship"), the Russian River Valley ("summer camp for the Castro District"), Lake Tahoe's Incline Village as a tax haven ("Incline Village is to Californians what Monaco is to Europeans") and where to hang out if you want to meet Sonoma's locals (the Irish pub and the Farmer's Market) are some of the many little gems that make the book worthwhile. Deutschman has a good eye and a good ear. I hope the next time he asks himself WWTWD - What Would Tom Wolfe Do? - and does it.

                      3 out of 5 stars A fast-food book about a gourmet subject........2006-03-10

Alan Deutschman's "A Tale of Two Valleys" is a quick, reasonably entertaining read, but as someone who loves the Napa and Sonoma Valleys and visits them a couple times a year, I was hoping for more. Some reviewers have taken Deutschman to task for factual errors; it's plain he misspelled the name of California wine industry pioneer Agoston Haraszthy (though that might have been an editing or printing error), and he may well have totally mischaracterized Haraszthy's life, and other things in the book as well. In any case, I had a different problem with "A Tale of Two Valleys": Deutschman tells the story in the first person, thus making himself a character in the book. That in itself is not a sin--so did John Berendt in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"--but, unlike Berendt, it's painfully obvious Deutschman remains on the outside of Napa and Sonoma, looking in. To be blunt, whereas Berendt is a storyteller and an empath, Deutschman is a reporter and a solipsist. He introduces a bewildering number of characters in his tale of political and financial infighting in the Wine Country, but he doesn't come close to making any of them memorable, with the single exception of Maria "Ditty" Vella, a cheese broker from an old-line Sonoma family and an outspoken advocate of slow food, slow growth and respect for the environment. There's no equivalent here to Jim Williams, Danny Hansford or Lady Chablis; I weep for the loss of what Berendt could have made of genuine characters like Bob Cannard Sr., the chicken historian of Sonoma, and Ken Brown, the New York cabbie turned Sonoma hippie activist. Deutschman is obviously enthusiastic about all the wonderful wines he drinks and gourmet meals he eats, but--except for one dinner with established winemaking families, planned expressly to keep out the parvenus--he doesn't give us much of a feel for them. The stories of the parallel battles over the futures of Napa and Sonoma are intrinsically interesting, and Deutschman tells them cleanly, swiftly, professionally. But it's too bad that this potentially gourmet tale is the literary equivalent of a bag of Cheetos--tasty, quickly consumed, and quickly forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Trembling in Mendocino.......2006-02-27

The hotel library's policy of "take a book, leave a book" possessed me of a copy of Deutschman's "A Tale of Two Valleys" which served well to prepare me for a behind the scene's exploration of Northern California wine country. Here was the real story exposing the artifice of wine country glamour and the vanity of its seekers. Where will Alan's critical gaze land next, upon the vapid ecotopia and sublime madness of Mendocino? Let them be afraid, let them be very afraid. Loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Better than expected and surprisingly familiar.......2005-09-01

Two things struck me about the book. First, the eccentric characters were not unlike those that one runs into routinely in a venue I'm more familiar with--small town deep south. Though flavored of California, of wine country, and of blue-state sensibilities, dress any one of the Sonomans in a blue sports coat and khakis and stick a bourbon-and-coke in his hand and you have yourself an everyday southerner of some stripe. Rich, poor, pretentious, humble, genuine, phony, romantic, hateful, kind, any of these just so long as slightly eccentric-cum-affected. Secondly, I noted a similarity in the characters' efforts to find transcendent meaning by pursuing pastimes with literal religious fervor. Wine, wine making, environmentalism, green space preservation, leisure--all find their place as the god of some Sonoman who otherwise found deity deceased in college and liked it that way, or so he thought. In parallel, take a less than rare southerner and find him worshiping on the gridiron any given Saturday or gleaning metaphysical truth from a blues man in a juke joint and you'll see the reverse image of your friendly Sonoman. I thought the book was well written and, intentionally or no, painted a clear picture of postmodern man's failure to find meaning. No idol satisfies, no passion fulfills, and A Tale of Two Valleys depicts that nicely.

                      Book Description

A trusted advisor to 90 of the Fortune 100 companies, Jac Fitz-enz is renowned as "the father of human performance benchmarking." He now turns his incisive eye toward performance in the e-World--especially as it is evolving from the industrial "i-World"--and shows how to manage an organization for maximum measurable results in times of head-spinning change.

"How can we measure true return on investment in a faster-moving, open-system world? How do we improve results in this new world using the same intellectual capital--our people?" These are the questions that far-sighted executives are asking. Fitz-enz answers by examining four key areas, each culminating in a Scorecard that lets readers gauge their own ROIs:

                      * Leadership argues that better communication and a high-touch approach--hardly traditional ROI focus points--are imperative for engaging the e-workforce.
                      * Strategy explores the links between innovation and risk, offering new ideas for rising above "commodity" status.
                      * Human Capital reveals that by combining continual learning and knowledge management, companies become Employers of Choice.
                      * External Relationships shows how to measure success with customers, partners, and alliances.

The final section shows "how to do it," wrapping the challenge into a practical methodology for making the transformation from the traditional to the e-savvy company.

5 out of 5 stars His Latest and Most Important Contribution.......2001-07-21

In The 8 Practices of Exceptional Companies and The ROI of Human Capital, Fitz-enz initiated a rigorous inquiry which continues as he explains in this book "how to map and measure your company's course in the new economy." It is not necessary to read the earlier works first but I strongly suggest it because, together, the three books create a cohesive understanding of three interdependent forces in the contemporary business world: organizational excellence, individual peak performance, and (for lack of a better term) appropriate navigation during constant change. "The good news is that the connectivity of the World Wide Web links everyone at light speed. The other news is that it has imposed a pace of life that is almost intolerable." The material is organized within five Parts.

                      * Enfolding the World

Fitz-enz explains how and why today's marketplace is changing from the old, industrial world (i-world) to the new, electronic world (e-world).

                      * Leadership Imperatives in E-World

According to Fitz-enz, there are "ten imperatives of e-world leadership": provide a clear vision, and strategy for people to follow, communication is the first priority as well as the best tool, use stories to implant the message, champion information sharing and learning, commit to building an exciting culture, reward innovation and punish unreasonable resistance, focus on measurable results rather than processes, invest heavily in developing associates, develop a "can-do" attitude in the organization, and finally, listen to associates.

                      * Strategy Drivers: Connectivity, Innovation, Customers

In Chapter 7, Figure 7-2 enables the reader to assess her or his readiness for e-world; at one point in Chapter 8, Fitz-enz examines Davenport's "Seven Rules of Innovation"; and in Chapter 9, Figure 9-2 poses a series of questions which, once answered, enable the reader to learn how customers view his nor her brand.

                      * Human Capital: The E-World Lever

This is one of the most important sections in the book. Fitz-enz suggests differences between and similarities of i-world and e-world associates; identifies what he considers to be, for supervisors, employees' most important needs and expectations; he lists (in Figure 11-1) those factors which affect employee productivity; he then identifies and discusses those factors which drive successful programs; and then in Chapter 13, Fitz-enz suggests how to integrate knowledge management and learning organization-wide. The Human Capital Scorecard (Figure 14-1) provided in Chapter 14 consists of ten attributes to be rated on a 1-5 scale

                      * Aligning Your Enterprise for E-World

I was surprised to learn in Chapter 15 that the results of a General Management Technologies research study (which asked executives about their general approach to e-business and the factors behind their e-business performance) reveals that "both the highest and lowest performers named the same factors as keys to success." Fitz-enz lists them. In the same chapter, Figure 15-3 illustrates the connections and pathways among people, knowledge, and performance. For those in need of a "game plan", this illustration offers an appropriate framework. In the final chapter, Fitz-enz focus on what he calls an "E-Alignment Scorecard" based on qualitative metrics which enable an organization's decision-makers to measure progress in the e-economy.

Note the logical progression from the analysis of E-World in Part I to an explanation of how to achieve organizational alignment with it in Part V. Fitz-enz then provides an Epilogue ("Over the Horizon") followed by Appendix A ("Three Levels of ROI Measurement") and Appendix B ("Bibliography"). In this book, Fitz-enz functions both as an anthropologist and as a tour guide. He shares his understanding of E-World as he accompanies his reader during a journey through it. In the final chapter, Fitz-enz suggests that the greatest challenge for any executive "is to grow an organization that is balanced in all respects. It must meet the imperative of making an acceptable return on all participants' investments. Stockholders, lenders, suppliers, employees, and customers must all benefit from the executive's decision...[then in italics] Every value system has natural outputs. We must choose our value system wisely. It is a death or life matter."

This is one of only a few books which I think should be the basis of a one- or two-day workshop (preferably offsite) for key executives of an organization. The book's table of contents would serve as the workshop's agenda. All participants are required to read the book in advance and complete various self-audits and organizational assessments, then come together (a) to share their responses and (b) to suggest correlations between the book's contents and the given organization's specific needs and interests. By the workshop's conclusion, all participants will have collaborated on a "game plan" to design, launch, and then implement a program which will enable their organization "to map and measure [its] course in the new economy." How important is the success of such a program? I wholly agree with Fitz-enz: "It is a death or life matter."

5 out of 5 stars Best of the millennium.......2001-06-16

One of the CEOs who reviewed the book called it the best new book of the millennium and bought one for every manager in her company. Two major software companies are arranging a special printing to give to their customers. This may be the sleeping giant! It is the first book that cuts through the hype to point out what is enduring and what is new in e-world. More importantly it directly attacks the three most important mega issues: leadership, strategy and managing people. Fitz-enz draws on 40 years of managing and writing (7 books and 140 articles) to give us a platform on which to ride the hype waves of the new economy. Perhaps best of all he gives us score cards to identify the keys to successful implementation and assessing our progress. Fitz-enz wraps up with an astounding network model (and scorecard) for aligning our organizations with the forces of e-world. Typical of his advice: "The universal connectivity afforded by the worldwide web has profoundly changed the employer-employee-customer relationship. Get it right or get out of the way!? It's extraordinarily insightful while maintaining a light, humorous touch where needed. What a treat this one is!

                          Book Description

In recent years, economic relations between Latin American countries and the People's Republic of China have developed steadily, exhibiting marked tendencies toward greater diversification. Using newly released data from the Chinese Government along with extensive interviews in China and Latin America, Li gives us the first systematic analysis of the economic and political ideas underlying this surge in Sino-Latin American economic relations. His focus on China's relations with six major trading partners--Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Chile, Mexico, and Peru--provides an accurate assessment of trends and prospects for an emerging bilateral economic partnership. The conclusions of this study find that Sino-Latin American ties have become less ideological and present PRC involvement has been largely compatible with Western interests. Since China is expected to develop into a major economic player in Latin America in the years to come, it is important for the United States to understand the implications of these burgeoning relations. This study is a valuable and much-needed contribution to the literature of South-South cooperation and collective self-reliance. Li examines three main areas of Sino-Latin American economic relations: trade, aid, and investment. Beginning with the Communist Revolution in China, he traces the history of China's relations with the six Latin countries, moving through early developments, the post-Cuban Revolution era, the 1970s normalization period, and China's Open-Door policy. Future prospects are considered in the concluding chapters, with hopes for greater economic interactions depending on the outcomes of China's own economic reforms and Latin America's economic recession. This book will be of interest to those who practice in the sphere of world political-economic relations, as well as academics who study them.
