3 out of 5 stars Would be interesting to re-read in 2004.......2004-01-24

Robert Eisner used to contribute to the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, where he was the lone Keynesian voice calling out in a Supply Side wilderness. Because of his unique fiscal policy point of view, though, he tended to talk down the budget hawks. It would be interesting to see what Eisner's take on the Republican Congress and Bush II spending policies appear to be. In fact, despite the declaration of the death of Keynesianism (we all thought we were looking forward to that, in the long run, weren't we?), the last three presidents have all pursued Keynesian policies despite themselves. Both Bushes ran up enormous deficits during recessions, and the Republican Congress/Clinton budgets achieved a "surplus" in a boom era (surplus if you don't count borrowing from Social Security).

This book explains why Eisner thought we shouldn't fear the debt run up by the Democrat Congresses and Reagan/Bush I presidencies. Though it was clear enough to me, and Eisner's practice at writing for intelligent lay readers of various non-academic publications helped, I agree with the other reviewer that it shoots between audiences and so misses both. Still, I plan to re-read it soon in order to determine if his conclusions then are valid today.

3 out of 5 stars It's in a sort of book limbo........2003-12-08

Unfortunately, Dr. Eisner's book suffers from the same problems that affected Stephen Hawking's Brief History of Time: although both books attempt to give the layman an understanding of the field, and dispel a number of common myths, they are both trapped between intellectual levels. They are too difficult to read through for the average person outside of the field, as they move too quickly and introduce too many concepts for the average reader to keep track. However, were they to be read by somebody within their field, that person would find that there is nothing to be gained by reading it -- they already understand everything that the book has to say. Not a bad book, but it will have an exceedingly difficult time finding its target audience.

      Book Description

When Washington Shut Down Wall Street unfolds like a mystery story. It traces Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo's triumph over a monetary crisis at the outbreak of World War I that threatened the United States with financial disaster. The biggest gold outflow in a generation imperiled America's ability to repay its debts abroad. Fear that the United States would abandon the gold standard sent the dollar plummeting on world markets. Without a central bank in the summer of 1914, the United States resembled a headless financial giant.

William McAdoo stepped in with courageous action, we read in Silber's gripping account. He shut the New York Stock Exchange for more than four months to prevent Europeans from selling their American securities and demanding gold in return. He smothered the country with emergency currency to prevent a replay of the bank runs that swept America in 1907. And he launched the United States as a world monetary power by honoring America's commitment to the gold standard. His actions provide a blueprint for crisis control that merits attention today. McAdoo's recipe emphasizes an exit strategy that allows policymakers to throttle a crisis while minimizing collateral damage.

When Washington Shut Down Wall Street recreates the drama of America's battle for financial credibility. McAdoo's accomplishments place him alongside Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan as great American financial leaders. McAdoo, in fact, nursed the Federal Reserve into existence as the 1914 crisis waned and served as the first chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

      5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-08-30

This book is a great read. The topic is fascinating (to me, at least). Some of the material is a bit intricate, but the author does a great job of explaining it. He liberally uses footnotes to explain details which to an economist might be pedestrian but to a lay person such as myself are not obvious. (One ongoing topic is the exchange rate between pounds sterling and dollars, and how that relates to the price of gold and the cost of shipping gold between the UK and the US. He does a great job of walking the reader through the process and the arithmetic.) I highly recommend this book, and particularly recommend it to anyone who wonders what the Federal Reserve Board really does.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating history of how the U.S. became the world's financial leader.......2007-03-30

In Kazuo Ishiguro's novel The Remains of the Day, a blue-blood guest unmercifully grills James Stevens, the head butler at an English estate. The pompous guest is trying to demonstrate that uneducated people should not have the vote. "My good man," he asks, "do you suppose the debt situation regarding America is a significant factor in the present low levels of trade? Or...is the abandonment of the gold standard...at the root of the matter?" Stevens, aware that the question is meant only to baffle him, replies that he has no idea. Poor Stevens! Anyone without a degree in international finance would have an equally difficult time answering such an abstruse question. That's why this intriguing business history book by William L. Silber is so worthwhile: He brings global finance to life by spotlighting America's 1914 money crisis and by explaining how then-U.S. Treasury Secretary William McAdoo used this portentous episode to establish the nation's financial supremacy. We suggest you read this illuminating work of economic history to understand the seminal events that established U.S. monetary policy.

Currencies and Crises brings together Paul Krugman's work on international monetary economics from the late 1970s to the present, in an effort to make sense of a turbulent period that, in Krugman's words, "involved one surprise after another, most of them unpleasant." The eleven essays cover such key areas as the role of exchange rates in balance-of-payments adjustment policy, the role of speculation in the functioning of exchange-rate regimes, third world debt, and the construction of an international monetary system.

        Book Description

There is no universally accepted definition of a currency crisis, but most would agree that they all involve one key element: investors fleeing a currency en masse out of fear that it might be devalued, in turn fueling the very devaluation they anticipated. Although such crises—the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, the speculations on European currencies in the early 1990s, and the ensuing Mexican, South American, and Asian crises—have played a central role in world affairs and continue to occur at an alarming rate, many questions about their causes and effects remain to be answered. In this wide-ranging volume, some of the best minds in economics focus on the historical and theoretical aspects of currency crises to investigate three fundamental issues: What drives currency crises? How should government behavior be modeled? And what are the actual consequences to the real economy?

Reflecting the latest thinking on the subject, this offering from the NBER will serve as a useful basis for further debate on the theory and practice of speculative attacks, as well as a valuable resource as new crises loom.

          Book Description

The management of financial crises in emerging markets is a vital and high-stakes challenge in an increasingly global economy. For this reason, it's also a highly contentious issue in today's public policy circles. In this book, leading economists-many of whom have also participated in policy debates on these issues-consider how best to reduce the frequency and cost of such crises.

The contributions here explore the management process from the beginning of a crisis to the long-term effects of the techniques used to minimize it. The first three chapters focus on the earliest responses and the immediate defense of a currency under attack, exploring whether unnecessary damage to economies can be avoided by adopting the right response within the first few days of a financial crisis. Next, contributors examine the adjustment programs that follow, considering how to design these programs so that they shorten the recovery phase, encourage economic growth, and minimize the probability of future difficulties. Finally, the last four papers analyze the actual effects of adjustment programs, asking whether they accomplish what they are designed to do-and whether, as many critics assert, they impose disproportionate costs on the poorest members of society.

Recent high-profile currency crises have proven not only how harmful they can be to neighboring economies and trading partners, but also how important policy responses can be in determining their duration and severity. Economists and policymakers will welcome the insightful evaluations in this important volume, and those of its companion, Sebastian Edwards and Jeffrey A. Frankel's Preventing Currency Crises in Emerging Markets.

            Book Description

Recent years have witnessed an increase in the frequency of currency and balance of payments crises in developing countries. More important, the crises have become more virulent, have caused widespread disruption to other developing countries, and have even had repercussions on advanced economies. To predict crises, their causes must be clearly understood. Two competing strands of theories are reviewed in this paper. The first focuses on the consequences of such policies as excessive credit growth in provoking depletion of foreign exchange reserves and making a devaluation inevitable. The second emphasizes the trade-offs between internal and external balance that the policymaker faces in defending a peg.

As someone who is not an economist, I am in no position to rate Tan's arguments vis-a-vis the positions of other economists. However, as an introduction to the complexities of the 1998 meltdown in Asian economies, this book is first-rate. It is very well organized.

Dealing with the crisis chronologically, and country-by-country, Tan is able to illustrate patterns that span the whole event, and unique events within each country. He treats the responses of each country, and does not shirk from providing a sober and often scathing assessment of the attitudes and policy responses of individual countries. His political analyses are just as useful, since the implications of the event have so much to do with the political makeup of individual countries, and their political and financial institutions.

Market data is used extensively to support his claim. There is a tremendous and often overwhelming plethora of data. However, if one is just looking for an identification of major patterns and analyses, Tan illustrates this very clearly within his chapters.

This book is a great resource for someone who wants access to source data that is relevant to the Asian Meltdown, as well as just a broad introduction to the phenomena that helps a reader trying to understand such a significant event (or series of events).

              Description:
Market participants often suspect that large traders have a disproportionate effect on financial markets, increasing the aggressiveness of market responses. Prior studies have shown that the impact of a large trader on a currency crisis depends positively on his ''size'' and informational position. By contrast, this article highlights the role that market sentiment has on the impact of a large trader. If the market believes that fundamentals are weak, then the probability of a crisis depends positively on the trader's size but negatively on the precision of his information, with these effects reversed in a generally optimistic market. A large player, therefore, need not make market responses more aggressive.

                    Description:
Prior empirical evidence on the stock price response of exposed firms to contemporaneous changes in exchange rates is weak. This paper avoids many problems encountered in previous work by using event-study methods to examine the daily stock price reactions of exposed U.S. multinationals to large, bilateral declines in the Mexican peso and Thai baht. We find a contemporaneous price response but interpret the magnitude of the response to say that the currency puzzle is not primarily due to methodological weaknesses in prior studies. Several findings suggest that effective financial and operational hedging may be the chief reason exchange rate changes do not affect stock prices more dramatically.

The New Managerial Mentor Becoming a Learning Leader to Build Communities of Purpose

This book is an excellent resource for helping to assess and to give you ideas on how to build your skills to become a better learning leader. Fritts creates a "learning moment" by having you take inventory your Learning Leader Role Preference and assess for yourself what areas are strengths and which need more development. I also liked the way it was clearly laid out. Each role was clearly defined, followed by focus of that role and the competencies needed. In addition to defining each competency, Fritts gives you an example of it in practice. Then you have an opportunity to assess your level in this competency with an exercise. The exercise was followed by ideas and/or suggestion of how to develop a plan to improve your level of learning in that competency. The way this book is laid out makes it a very practical read and a good learning resource.

As Fritts says on page 158 "To increase productivity in a knowledge economy, managers need to focus more on people than on technology". Fritts puts the mentor role in a new light, one of needing to fully develop a diverse set of roles, collaborator, innovator, producer, and integrator. Traditionally mentoring described a relationship of an "older individual imparting their wisdom to younger associates" (pg. 169). However, as Fritts states, "the new model calls for people at all levels to create reciprocal learning relationships and develop the technical and interpersonal competencies needed to thrive in the new economy", working in any business today requires us to be able to learn on the fly and be flexible, while meeting the marketplace needs. I think that Fritts hits the nail on the head with this book.

I enjoyed this book so much that I have purchased copies for my team and we are planning to use these concepts at our next offsite to see how we can continue to build our skills as learning leaders.

4 out of 5 stars The New Managerial Mentor : Becoming a Learning Leader.......2000-01-23

The New Managerial Mentor book places emphasis on learning as a collaborative effort. The focus is partnering and the importance of an organization's success over the next decade. It encourages manager to welcome change, encourage employees to take charge of their destiny and to find their work rewarding. The Managerial Mentor is essential for any company to prepare for changing times, as companies must become more competitive than ever with the advances in technology. The book guides managers in the facilitating process, as they support and encourage their employees to become lifelong learners. The book begins with an assessment exercise to identify the characteristics of your organization. The book is a good tool for any manager that desires effective methods to meet the demands and challenges of an unstable and chaotic environment. The emphasis is placed in learning in a continual process to bring about new ideas to sustain a competitive edge in uncertain marketplace.

The author divides the book into three sections - (1) Mentoring in the learning organization addresses the role that managers play in mentoring relationship and the diverse competencies of the learning leader. (2) Becoming a learning leader addresses the different learner styles - collaborator, innovator, producer and integrator. These four managerial mentoring roles help to provide individual competency assessment. Assists in focusing on the strengths and abilities. (3) Putting your plan together steps the reader through the process to become a learning leader by leading with a purpose. The book is equipped with exercises and checklists throughout the book designed to step you through the different processes, preference inventory and scoring sheets help you focus your development effort.

The book is concise, easy to read and flows well. Pat Fritts has skillfully put together the tasks and processes essential for identifying innovative ways to engage in collaborative learning. Use this book as a guide to step you through the processes. The exercises and checklists will ensure a successful plan for mastering new learning competencies. I would highly recommend this book for any manager who wants to ensure the success of his organization as well as the success of its employees by partnering and co-learning. A word of caution, this book is not for every organization. Its' methodologies and approach is aggressive and requires organizations to build its foundation on mutual trust and collaboration. It requires employees to empower themselves and take risks. It requires a transformation at every level of the organization.

5 out of 5 stars This is a practical and easy to use guide........1999-04-05

The exercises in the chapters focus on the practicality of this book. Dr. Fritts presents the information in an easy to follow and and easy to use form. Since the scenarios depict the workforce of today, a manager can see herself or himself in various situations then use the exercises to assist in thinking through the problematic areas. Helps one to determine areas of strength in the managerial arena. The lessons of the book cross all types of business situations. The book is relevant to all managers regarless of their experience level.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent learning vehicle for business/nonprofit managers.......1999-03-29

I found this to be an extremely helpful book. The author provides an innovative mentoring model for managers and professionals in all types of organizations. Most importantly, she includes practical tools for individual and organizational development. I highly recommend this book!

Sales is simply a great book. Bob Mander may be the first person in history to write a sales guide for thinking people. Bob has captured the essence of the sales process and what it demands of present day salespeople. This book goes beyond the trite PMA formulas of the past. We finally have a rational guide to the sales process. The greatest value of the book is the way the author guides you into seeing sales as an integrated and multidimensional profession. As a neophyte salesperson, I found this book to be of immense value. Sales will be studied for many generations to come.

You've heard people say, "He's a born salesman." It may be true that some people possess the elements often understood as good salesmanship traits: i.e. a self-motivating and aggressive nature, a sparking personality, and the ability not to take rejection personally. Granted, these are all beneficial traits, but Bob Mander claims those assets aren't enough and that successful salemanship must go far beyond those basic personal attributes. In this book Mander focuses on the learned and practiced skills necessary to put sales in its proper light; as that of a business discipline complete with ethics, passion and, most important, sincerity. Mr. Mander's book is the primer for success in sales. According to the author, you don't have to have Willy Loman-like genetics to be successful in the sales arena. Successful selling can be learned from the ground up by acquiring the proper skills and knowledge and Bob's book serves as the perfect syllabus for those sales people, old and new, who don't subscribe to the basic formulas but aspire to succeed in the sales field. If your career is geared to sales, whether it's widgets or web pages you're peddling, reading "Sales: Building Lifetime Skills for Success" is a must.
