    Book Description

Invaluable guidance on the most important legal issues facing nonprofits today

Internet communication is the lifeblood of countless nonprofit organizations, yet there exists no specific law to provide for its regulation. Without solid legal guidance, nonprofits risk not only missing out on the unlimited opportunities that the Internet has to offer, but also jeopardizing their tax-exempt status. The Nonprofits' Guide to Internet Communications Law analyzes and explains the laws applicable to Internet communications by nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit law expert Bruce Hopkins writes that with Congress and government agencies reluctant to create new law, it will ultimately be up to the courts to determine the future of Internet law affecting nonprofit organizations. Extrapolating from the underlying principles of existing law, Hopkins addresses the legal ramifications of Internet business activities, charitable-giving administration, fundraising programs, lobbying, political campaign activities, and more.

The Nonprofits' Guide to Internet Communications Law proves an unparalleled resource for this emerging field.

        Book Description

The focus of this book is on the U. S. segment of the global foreign exchange market. Chapters 1-3 describe the structure of the market and how it has changed. Chapters 4-6 comment on the main participant groups and the instruments that are traded. Chapters 7-8 look at foreign exchange trading from a micro, rather than macro, point of view - how an individual bank or other dealing firm sees things. Chapters 9-11 comment on some of the broader issues facing the international monetary system and how governments, central banks, and market participants operate within that system. This is followed by an epilogue.

Have you been thinking of what is the "next big thing"? Wishing for something to take us out of the techno slump we are in? Well, this is a book for you. He's given us details of the industry that would help a business write a plan, evaluate different models of vc, and see around the corner of what is "on the horizon" in vc. It's simply the most you can get in a single volume. Hey, it has humor in it too, like the part about the nascent higher level mpeg technology-- This technology challenges us to imagine a time when, out of the massive quantity of digital content, we'll be able to locate the exact location and spot where... (well I won't spoil it for you) READ THE BOOK ... IT's GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide on the subject..........2001-01-21

Jim Wilcox is a recognized leader in the videoconferencing technology knowledge space, and he doesn't disappoint with this latest edition of his seminal work.

Having referenced several other popular titles in the course of my work in the videoconferencing and collaborative computing space, I've come to realize that Wilcox's treatise is the only volume that stands up to the test of providing the reader with outstanding background and historical information through the detailed analysis of the complexities of the technology proper.

All too often, technical books of this nature focus exclusively on the technology without commenting on why and how the technology evolved. Wilcox excels in his ability to convey such information in a way that enhances the technical content of the book, versus simply regurgitating technical specifications and facts. This is specifically why this reference shines above similar efforts. Additionally, the book is quite approachable for newcomers to the field in that it presents very useful and pragmatic application overviews which better balance the theory with the practical.

Now required reading for my engineering team, I highly recommend this book to anyone, beginner or expert, requiring a detailed rundown on this exciting and rapidly emerging technology space. It is an outstanding reference and a "must have" for any complete networking and computing technology library.

          4 out of 5 stars Picture this!.......2000-04-26

Written by an acknowledged expert in the area of video-conferencing and IP networking, Wilcox's "Videoconferencing - the whole picture" serves an excellent jumping-off point for further investigation into understanding crucial network infrastructure issues surrounding multimedia-over-IP. The concise content expresses this complex subject so well that it makes the material lively for readers.

This book addresses today's hot networking trends, describes high-demand multimedia applications and provides in-depth explanation of the latest developments. It is a truly wonderful book that will teach you how various technologies actually work, how they compare with each other, what the regulatory framework is and what it could become. It is a one-stop book. Demand for multimedia-over-IP could not be more intense, with an exponentially growing number of Internet dreaming of interactive movies, music, and more. As broadband access becomes ever more available, "Videoconferencing - the whole picture" serves as a wonderful book that will teach you how various leading (and lagging) networking technologies work, how they compare with each other, and what the regulatory framework is and could become. It is a one-stop book, as you don't have to go through a book on each of these technologies.

The approach taken in the book is to emphasize core concepts and underlying principles to illustrate detailed textual descriptions. In addition, many carefully prepared illustrations are used throughout the book to enhance the textual explanations. By distilling complex technologies down to the basic issues needed for intuitive understanding, both serious and novice readers are able to gain valuable insights into the exciting world of multimedia communications.

However, the purpose of the book goes beyond making the reader merely conversant in these issues. In fact, it serves to stimulate reflection and further research, to encourage readers to more fully explore the topics covered. Most of the references have been chosen because they are either informative or particularly well written, and useful Internet resources and references have been included as well. Hence, the book can serve as an ideal course reader for video conferencing and multimedia over IP networks.

The chapters of this book are organized as follows. Chapters 1 & 2 provide a detailed introduction to videoconferencing history, terms and applications. Chapter 3 describes numerous (interesting) case studies while in Chapter 4, the author offers a primer on presenting the business case for (or against) videoconferencing. Chapters 5 & 6 area an excellent discussion of the history and technologies that prepared the way for current videoconferencing standards. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 provide a comprehensive view of multimedia standards including Videoconferencing, audio conferencing over IP. Chapters 10 and 11 are a comprehensive review of circuit-switched and packet switched networks, their histories and their future. Chapter 12 describes group videoconferencing issues, while chapter 13 details implementation issues for group applications. Chapters 14 and 15 are dedicated to personal videoconferencing, and provide an excellent resource for that endeavor. Chapter 16 addresses information security issues, and belie the fact that the author is a seasoned data security professional (hence the CISSP after his name). Chapter 17 is a fun chapter discussing a wide swath of technologies that will doubtless receive center-stage attention in future editions of this book. The remaining appendices (there are more than 200 pages of reference material) are an excellent (and valuable) compilation of information including the names and contactact information for numerous standards bodies, detailed MPEG standards, project planning and installation checklists, and numerous product suppliers as well as an excellent glossary of terms.

5 out of 5 stars Do you see the 'Whole Picture'? You will!.......2000-04-25

James R. Wilcox, CISSP, has put forth a tremendous effort in his 3rd edition of 'Videoconferencing the whole picture'. Mr. Wilcox clearly demonstrates this effort in the thoroughness at which he describes the technology that will forever change the way we function at work and home. Any reader interested in videoconferencing or interactive media will be delighted to see that this book includes the past, present and future of these profound technologies. Included are detailed discussions of terms and concepts to bring a full understanding to the enthralled reader. For any professional in the industry this book can be used to provide the background and overall nuances as well as a wonderful reference guide when out in the field.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Leaves No Stone Unturned.......2006-01-22

The authors leave no stone unturned regarding video communications. This book covers everything from the 26 pound picturephone launched at the 1964 New York World's Fair, squeezing video over the equivalent of 100 telephone lines, to the current and future uses of mobile video transmitting over invisible digital wireless high speed technologies.

I found the book to be well thought out and written in a concise, comprehensive way, replete with historical reference to the subject, technical analysis and implementation guidelines and resources. Though highly technical on many levels, I also found it to be well grounded and relevant to businesses, individuals and real world applications of video communications.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE ALL OF THOSE PICTUREPHONES THAT WE WERE PROMISED?.......2005-11-06

It's 2005! Where are all of those picturephones that we were promised back at the 1964 World's Fair at Flushing Meadow, New York? Authors James R. Wilcox and David Gibson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that answers the preceding question; as well as, discussing today's video communication tools and the applications that are built upon them.

Wilcox and Gibson begin by examining videoconferencing. Next, the authors cover the use of video communication applications. Then, they detail instances in which organizations have leveraged video communication. The authors continue by making the business case for video communications. In addition, the authors next outline the evolution of broadcasting techniques, why there are different television systems in different parts of the world, and what those systems are. They also discuss digital encoding techniques. Next, the authors present a thorough discussion of codecs and the standards that define them. Then, they discuss another aspect of conferencing--audiographics conferencing. The authors continue by discussing the standards for conferencing over IP. In addition, they discuss ATM with regards to physical and data-link layer transmission systems. The authors also cover packet-switched networks in detail. Next, the authors cover how group systems accommodate multiple viewers in a single location. Then, they consider the process of implementing a conventional group-oriented video communication facility that is suitable for routine organizational use. The authors continue by examining how personal conferencing leverages a variety of distance-collaboration tools that are easily used at a personal computer. In addition, the authors provide tips for evaluating and buying personal conferencing systems. Finally, they predict the future of video communications.

With the preceding in mind, the authors have done an excellent job of presenting clearly and concisely the complex subject of video communication. So, perhaps, by the end of this decade, we will all have those picturephones that were promised 40 years ago.

            3 out of 5 stars A good, in-depth background provider of Video-Conferencing.......1999-09-21

The book offers such a comprehensive history of the the technology and industry that the section(s) could be a stand-alone publication. It also reflects a great deal of effort on the part of the author in the background and research of the technology. The information was key in my ability to pass the CVE exam.

However, the editor should offer some apologies for poor grammer which makes reading difficult at times. This should not reflect on the author (most of us techies even speak that way). I noticed that due to poor punctuation, the interpretation of some paragraphs might be misunderstood and given the complex nature of this technology, small changes can mean the difference between success and failure.

I commend the author for her efforts to collect so much information into one publication.

3 out of 5 stars Overall, an acceptable introduction........1998-06-07

As a wanna-be propeller head, I would have to pan this book for not beeing geekie enough.

On the other hand, I am not a propeller-head and this book is a readable introduction to the subject of videoconferencing that covers the overall subject well on a non-technical level. In short, it is an executive summary of the subject. This book could be, alas it is, a text for a business-related videoconferencing class. If you are looking for the ins and outs of audio and video compression, see John Watkinson or Keith Jack. Either will wind up your propeller so that you can soar to new heights. If, on the other hand, you want a gentle path to the subject, stick with Trowt-Bayard.

4 out of 5 stars The first edition was informative, but immature........1997-06-03

The first edition of the book was informative, but also immature. This is not a fault of the book, but rather a comment on the state of the industry at the time of the first writing. It is a combination of a high level explanatory book and a product guide which quickly becomes obsolete considering how product technology changes quickly. There is a second edition out, and this review does not comment on it. (Nor is the product listed the second edition)

(My wife has been telecommuting from home on a part-time basis for about two years, and I must admit, I've been less than supportive.) Recently, I decided to make the plunge to start a home business and take on a good portion of the child care responsibilities. We searched high and low for resources that could help. "The Work at Home Balancing Act" was the *only* book we found that addresses ALL the issues and challenges of working at home from both a MALE and FEMALE perspective. It's been our lifesaver because we can both relate to it, and it teaches us how to communicate about complicated issues that arise when you work from home. It's written in a reader-friendly style with great quotes and stories from men and women--very realistic and motivational. Lots of nuts and bolts strategies--everything you need to know to set up and run a successful home business or telecommuting arrangement, and then some!

After a successful sales career spanning several decades and two continents, David J. Voegeli writes from retirement on the science of selling, aiming his advice at those new to sales and those who are experiencing stumbling blocks on the way. How to make it easy for your prospects to buy from you is illustrated in the useful scenarios that the author sets out in these pages. Making contact, introducing the product, and closing - David J. Voegeli makes it all clear. He also touches on discounts, display, after-service, accounts overdue, free gifts, flyers, and advertising copy... and getting from A to B! So if you're part detective, part psychologist, and part politician - as he says - this book is for you, because you're a salesperson. Be professional. Read it.
