    Book Description

Nigel Harris argues that the notion of national capital is becoming redundant as cities and their citizens, increasingly unaffected by borders and national boundaries, take center stage in the economic world. Harris deconstructs this phenomenon and argues for the immense benefits it could and should have, not just for western wealth, but for economies worldwide, for international communication and for global democracy.

        Book Description

International monetary reform is of vital importance to the countries of the world. Although many studies have been made of the structure and problems of the international payment mechanism, few provide an analytical survey of the international monetary system. This study analyzes the structural and operational limitations of past systems as well as the major reform proposals for modifying and/or replacing the current system with a new payment mechanism.

The authors describe the structure and nature of the international payment system and identify the issues relating to international adjustment, liquidity, and confidence. They discuss the nature of international liquidity, including liquidity's purpose, sources of demand and supply, and potential shortcomings. They analyze the theoretical and empirical implications of the gold standard. Of primary concern is the extent to which the actual operations of the system corresponded to the theoretical role of the gold standard, and the nature and limitations of the so-called dollar-gold system that prevailed in the past quarter century until 1971.

The major reform proposals of the international payment mechanism are next discussed. Included are the proposals of historical interest such as Keynes, Triffin, Bernstein, Stamp, Angell, Rueff, and the currently debated issues of the Special Drawing Rights standard, freely floating exchange rates, and the wider-band and crawling-pegged exchange rate mechanisms. Finally the authors analyze the nature, operation, and future role of the managed float exchange rate system, which resulted from the international monetary crisis of 1973. Of particular interest are the effects of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) cartel on the U.S. dollar as a reserve currency, and the monetary effects of the cartel's balance-of-payments surplus on the world financial markets.

This study provides the historical background, the institutional framework, and a balanced analysis of problems involved in the international monetary system. It will be of interest to all students of economics and finance, and should be read by anyone wishing to understand the world of ever-expanding trade.

4 out of 5 stars great summary of business basics.......2006-12-13

I found this book to be quite a wake-up call to the realities of home-based business. The author covers material related to managing a business like taxes, insurance, time management, how to handle money, and a bunch of other stuff, and he doesn't apologize for the realistic picture he paints. The only criticism I would make is that it's a little short on information about marketing crafts. Discussions of craft shows, wholesaling, internet marketing, and so forth are very briefly discussed in the final chapter.

4 out of 5 stars everything i needed to know.......2002-12-13

in starting my craft business, this book proved invaluable. he covers how to tell if you are a good fit for a home-based business, how to set up your bookkeeping (the biggest help for me), and how to track and analyze your production processes. definitely recommended if you are thinking about moving from amateur crafter to gettin paid.

3 out of 5 stars Good general overview.......2000-08-30

Simply put, this an easy to read book for one considering entering the craft field as a business and not just as a hobby. Kenn discusses the pros and cons of such a decision and encourages one to think carefully before starting a home-based business. He outlines managerial, financial and marketing templates for the artisan. The material is exact and full of useful tips and pitfalls to avoid. Anyone starting a home-based business should read his steps and make sure to follow his processes.

The book is not written with an MBA viewpoint but rather from a down-to-earth and straightforward one. He uses his past experiences to help the business neophyte enter this exciting world. His advice is sound and the templates are practical for anyone starting a home-based business.

Regardless, this style leaves one wanting more craft specific details. While Kenn started his own craft business, it is not until the later chapters that there is craft specific advice. This book could do well for any home-based business. See his other titles for proof.

We had hoped that future editions would include all of the business templates in popular electronic formats like Word, Excel or better yet HTML; but still nothing. Finally, we really like the new updated web and internet tips. See http://www.ijudy.com/ for more details.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Useful Technology Books to Read.......2004-03-11

I happened to pick up this excellent book from a local library. It has everything I need to know about organizing my life in the tech era. It was written in a precise and straight forward language with selected amount of useful information. I have read quite a few books in organizing and technology management. This book amazingly covers most core principles in other books, and its texts are less than 150 pages.

Ms. Hedrick starts from simple decisions of purchasing/using PDA or a Cellular Phone, to sophisticated system of organizing your life with papers, electronic documents, as well as relationship with other people in term of staying in touch and sharing information. The progression of depth is very nicely planned.

When I think harder, I have found the concepts of this book are aligned with most 'new age' simplicity books. 'Get Organized' gives you every tool you need without the philosophical understandings. The steps and methodologies outline in this book are very easy to follow, and they are effective. If you want to
dig deeper with advanced techniques, this book has plenty of leads you can follow up with.

You can read 'Get Organized in the Digital Age' in an afternoon and reap the benefit of it for the rest of your life. Give it a try!

This book has taken much of my fear out of using technology for organizing my life. It is written in a very simple manner that even a non-tech like myself can understand. Every busy person in American (and beyond)will benefit from reading this book.

Some people's kids simply do not want to be here. What if your kids can't handle the peer-testing they'll be subjected to at school. It's different in this multi-cultural climate. What about "That local attitude." Dogs, dogs, everywhere, and nothing can be done about the constant barking. "Things just don't happen here like they did at home." Working with Government in building or business issues. The so-called lack of available jobs. Rural Hawai'i's "different" driving habits. Having to wait for what you want or need right now.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of information.......2007-09-16

This is a wonderful book if you're planning to move to the Big Island of Hawaii. It breaks it down in an easy to follow way. Plain spoken and unbiased (although the author clearly loves the island). Lots of practical advise but if you're planning on moving to another island in Hawaii this might not be for you.

4 out of 5 stars This book was very helpful.......2007-08-03

This book has a lot of practical information and advice for people who think that Island living is as simple as just moving there. The author suggests many ways to make the move easier, cheaper and less stressful. He stresses the importance of assimilating to the island culture, rather than bringing mainland sensibilities with you. The author has a blog which is a great forum to share ideas and ask specific questions. Read this book and learn what it means to "Live Aloha"

            5 out of 5 stars Affordable Paradise.......2007-07-19

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book....Highly Recommended.......2007-05-25

After reading reviews on this site I ordered Affordable Paradise, as well as So You Want to Live in Hawaii by Toni Polancy. I loved Affordable Paradise and highly recommend it. I do suggest purchasing both books and reading them together. Toni Polancy's (So You Want to Live in Hawaii) book is quite pessimistic, right from the opening lines...but it does contain some valuable information. Skip Thomsen's book is my favorite by far. The author also maintains a website where updates are available free of charge.

2 out of 5 stars Not for moving to Oahu! (don't judge a book by it's cover).......2007-04-05

This book is poorly edited, and looks like it was printed in someone's garage. No less than three different font types throughout the main text. Additionally, the title of this book is deceiving- it should be called, the secrets to an affordable life on "THE BIG ISLAND" of Hawaii. The author says straight up on the second page of this book that this book will not help you if you want to move to Maui or any other Hawaii'an island for that matter. However, from reading the cover, it says nothing about referring to 'Hawaii'' as the Big Island of Hawaii. It just refers to 'Hawaii.' Annoying. Bad on me for not reading further- Amazon recommended this to me when I was purchasing another book on Hawaii, and I fell for it. Not satisfied.

            Book Description

When Lucent Technologies was spun off from AT&T in 1996, the new company was full of promise. An old-line manufacturer, it quickly became a sizzling hot stock thanks to the emergence of the Internet and the build-up of telecommunications. The stock market was soaring, and Lucent flew with it. Within a few short years it became the sixth-largest corporation in America and the most widely held stock in the country. Yet only months later, Lucent was gasping for life, victim of the greatest stock-market bubble in history.

Optical Illusions is the story of a financially sound company steeped in world-class talent, dominant in one of the fastest-growing industries, that in the space of two years found itself downgraded to a junk-bond credit rating, under investigation by the SEC for its accounting practices, the value of its stock reduced to the price of a cup of coffee. Lisa Endlich tells the fascinating tale of the company that epitomized the misfortunes of the telecom industry, leaving investors and employees shocked and confused.

In writing this book Endlich had access to more than a hundred people who played a role in the drama, as well as previously sealed courtroom documents. She explains how the conflicting styles of CEOs Henry Schacht and Rich McGinn contributed to Lucent's woes, and she shows how the loss of skilled executives such as Carly Fiorina hurt the company at a crucial moment. When it was all over, Schacht -- Lucent's first CEO, who was later brought back to right the listing ship -- acknowledged that Lucent had allowed itself to be swept up in the market mania, distorting its corporate values in the process.

Although the stock-market mania of the late 1990s is remembered as "the Internet craze" or "the dot-com madness," as Optical Illusions shows, the damage was more widespread and lasting. In fighting for its survival, Lucent laid off more than 70 percent of its employees, wrecking retirees' savings and investors' portfolios alike.

            4 out of 5 stars A thorough work........2007-06-27

This subject is very complex and one needs to read the history of Western Electric and AT&T at divestiture to appreciate the detail that the author reveals. Bravo!

Highly accurate (personally been there while it was happened) description of the unbridled greed and incompetence of Lucent management. An artifact well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Managed into the Ground.......2005-12-26

Endlich chronicles the story of Lucent's travels from AT&T spinoff in '96 to nearly bankrupt skeleton in '02. In two years its capitalization fell by $250 billion as a result of the stock dropping 99%. Despite having fabled Bell Labs as its research arm (developed transistor, laser, optical amplification, cellular transmilssion, UNIX computer operating system, C computer language, HDTV, and radar; "home" to 11 Nobel laureates), it also went from leader to laggard in a major new industry - optical switchgear.

Henry Schacht, former Cummins Engine CEO and AT&T Board member, was the first Lucent CEO. He requested Carly Fiorina the position of president of the Consumer Products division and a mandate to overhaul its product line. Instead, in a preview of her actions at H-P, she merged with the Dutch conglomerate Phillips, giving Lucent a 40% interest of the $2.5 billion (sales) and 12,500 employee result. Unfortunately, the new entity started out losing money and never improved. Lucent sold its share after two years.

At the time Lucent's spin-off it was 1/4 the size of AT&T long-lines - 19 months later it was larger thanks to the booming economy and new capital investment - especially in the optical communications and new phone lines (as a result of Internet usage) area.

Early on Lucent decided to focus on new independent local carriers that were springing up across the country. Lucent's new CEO (post Schacht) also broke the firm into 11 units - each with P&L responsibility. Thirty-eight companies were acquired in the first five years - each at a substantial premium. To help "pay" for the acquisitions Lucent resorted to increasingly aggressive accounting - eg. stretching the estimated value of its pension fund, etc. Then the demand for 2nd and 3rd phones started falling (initial demand became satiated; cable became a desirable alternative), and the new phone companies began encountering problems with maintaining growth and paying bills.

Lucent countered by increasingly funding equipment sales to increasingly credit-questionable firms, shifting sales from future periods forward, gaming the accounting for returns, etc. Meanwhile researchers became increasingly attracted to lucrative stock options offered elsewhere, and turnover amongst their ranks hit 20%.

Corrective efforts involved bringing Schacht back as CEO, a new CFO, reducing from 11 units to 4 (had duplicated sales and other staff between them). However, the "really bad news" was that an estimated 97% of new fiber laid was never "lit" - part of this was due to the fact that fiber laid pre-'95 with a capacity of 25,000 1-page e-mails/minute by '02 could carry 25 million similar messages with little upgrading. Meanwhile Lucent's customers learned how to "game" Lucent by waiting until late in the month to place orders (getting substantial discounts as Lucent struggled to meet its financial goals), and manufacturing became increasingly stressed by the see-saw nature of orders caused by this gaming.

Lucent had a high P/E ratio almost from the beginning due to its perception as a growth stock. However, this meant that once the growth stopped, the stock would get hammered. Even worse was the eventual revelation that fraudulent reporting had occured to support prior revenue-boosting efforts, the recognition that much of its accounts-receivable were uncollectable because of weak customers and poor quality shipments, and the substantial loss of market share due to Lucent's not keeping up with new optical transmission technology.

2001 brought losses of $16.1 billion - more than Lucent had made cumulatively to-date; by 2002 75% of its employees were gone.

The one recommendation I have for the author is to have greater quantification of some of its problems - eg. how much was lost due to A/R write-offs, obsolete inventory, phoney sales, etc

3 out of 5 stars Corporate and Business Line Changes Without Preparation.......2005-10-14

I enjoyed the comments of the preceding which told me much about the book in my conteplation of purchasing it. Lucent's down fall started with the 1984 decree. Something that AT&T embraced thinking that new and bigger markets would be available. Missteps included buying TCI cable without the experience and knowledge of running a mom and pop business on the run far from "Bell Standards" that so many Western Electric and Lucent Managers embraced. They did not change into the flexible and savy business men of the 80s and 90s and lost at every turn and decission. The "Early Outs" prior to 1991 took most of the business knowledge and stability with them. Managers and CEOs were hired from all differnt kinds of Companies having differnt values and business understandings (which was needed) but lacked fundamental telecommunications expertise and how to gain a lion's share of the market. The best method was new technologies coupled with listening to all the customers needs and concerns. Lucent, like its predecessor and parent company, devalued it's stock and undevalued it's once talented, dedicated and loyal workforce. The Book seems like a good purchase but it doesn't seem to touch upon the employees who built it and subsequently were forced to see it go. Bell Labs and the Bell System literally dictated to the Baby Bells that analog equipment would continue to be used in the late 70s. Digital technology had been introduced by various venders and Bell Labs played "catch up" when the operating companies began buying the digital equipment fron non Western Electric sources. That was the first mis-step of Western Electric....Lucent Technologies management. Understand the marketplace and the needs of your customer...always. R. Ferry...27 years with Western Electric.

            5 out of 5 stars Edifying Read.......2005-09-30

I completely enjoyed this book. The factual accounting was wonderful and the book was an easy read.

We had some dealings with Lucent back when I was the founder of a telecommunication equipment startup and it was interesting to see the street view of the inner workings of the company.

The book goes through the history of Lucent from its spinout of AT&T through present day. The lessons associated with the management mis-steps are the most interesting part of the book. They made some fatal mistakes from the standpoint of technology investments (or not) and clearly jumped into the CLEC craze. They clearly made bad decisions about extending financee to customers that were not credit worthy; a general issue of the times. The WinStar story is particularly interesting.

The view of acquistions is very interesting. Very few panned out and the back of the envelope is that something like ten to twenty billion dollars of cash/equity went out the door to fund the acquisition ferver. The acquisition of Chromatis cost about $4.5B and they shut them down after 10 months. hmmmmm....

There are some terrific management lessons to be learned by reading this book. Much cheaper than owning the stock during the decline. :-)

            Book Description

The latest in our ComputerWorld "Books for IT Leaders" series, this book offers sensible, authoritative advice for managing businesses in this new era of wireless tools, technologies, and applications. It provides a practical roadmap for realizing the rewards that wireless technology offers, and explains the current reality of wireless commerce. Praise for Keen & McDonald's "The eProcess Edge": "Extensive hype and overvaluation of companies engaged in eBusiness have raised much concern in top management and financial circles. This book is one of the strongest to help nontechnical managers get beyond the hype to understand the permanent value that will come from applying the Internet to core processes in every kind of business, old and new. - Mario Morino, Chairman of the Morino Institute, and former Chairman, Legent Corporation "For those of us innovating in the technology field, it is refreshing to see such an imaginative and practical book. This is a book executives in eCommerce simply must have." - Ed Newman, Chairman, President, and CEP, Xybernaut Corporation "Anyone can do electronic commerce, but not everyone can do it well and profitably. Keen and McDonald's research demonstrates how to combine Internet technology with the process virtues of efficiency and effectiveness. Both new and old economy firms find it invaluable." - Thomas H. Davenport, Director, Andersen Consulting Institute for Strategic Change, and Professor, Boston University School of Management

            2 out of 5 stars A manager's garden of misinformation...........2001-10-09

I bought this book because it sounded like the authors had a clear picture of the way ahead in mobile commerce. Unfortunately, it does not live up to this promise. Some of the case studies and analyses are thought-provoking. For example, the classification of a mobile application as a 'feature', 'convenience', or 'freedom' is a good way to evaluate its worth. However, the good parts are offset by convoluted writing, repetition, and errors in both facts and analysis. We learn that SMS is a 'Simple Messaging System' (it really stands for 'Short Message Service'). The authors also seem confused about WAP, a suite of standards designed to work with cellular networks and limited mobile devices. Equating WAP with early personal computers, the authors paint WAP as being slow and a 'convenience'. The real limitation here is current 2G networks and handsets, not WAP (which actually helps things run faster and more reliably).

I did manage to wade through the entire book, but the technical errors and stream-of-conciousness (unedited?) writing made this a chore. Sadly at the end of this, I do not feel that this book does much to clear the muddied waters of mobile commerce...

4 out of 5 stars The Freedom Economy.......2001-07-24

I found the style to be very clear and straightforward, and it easily held my attention. It has the right balance between enthusiasm and passion about the vision, and the rational criteria of the limitations of Mcommerce.

The authors provide an excellent framework for strategic planning for the Enterprise and their selection of Customer Relationships, Logistics and Intellectual Capital as focus areas is right on.

I think the application of the Braudel rule to be a stroke of genius, and offers a real breakthrough in strategic analysis.

While I agree broadly with the themes outlined in the book, both in terms of the analysis of current state and the future vision, I would take issue with the authors view of the evolution of Mcommerce in Europe vs. the U.S. I think the $100 B tax on consumers, which was paid by the operators to governments for 3G licenses is not a benign event, but will in retrospect will be viewed as a watershed event in wealth destruction.

The impact will be that the competitive positioning of the U.S. vs. Europe will not evolve as outlined of a reciprocal convergence towards parity between the U.S. and Europe. I believe Europe will advance to competitive levels in B2B integration, but the U.S. will exceed European levels in mobile.

I believe that because of this tax, Europe will stagnate in mobile, and the U.S. will now pull ahead of Europe, and that within 2-3 years the U.S. will have clear leadership.

Furthermore, because of the palaeolithic and fragmented condition of the U.S mobile infrastructure, the hurdle rate for next generation technology investment will be lower and the economic imperatives and opportunities for growth will be greater in the U.S.. This will enable the U.S operators to more easily justify the investments necessary to move to 3G.

Ironically, the idiocy of European politicians will allow the Americans to recover lost ground, and because of their current competitive disadvantage of antiquated and fragmented infrastructures, they will have an advantage in migrating to CDMA based architectures and 3G infrastructures.

I believe in Europe the more likely scenario is:

            a. delays for next generation deployment in Europe by the operators. b. once it is deployed, mobile rates will be held higher longer, particularly in roaming, to recover the investment in the licenses

Because of this, while the U.S. now suffers technological fragmentation, Europe will suffer economic balkanisation, the impact of which will be lower levels of innovation and retarded adoption rates, opening the door to U.S. leadership.

                Book Description

This book reveals how the Japanese national ministries can exploit their Special Status Corporations (public corporations, supported primarily with public funding from a state-run banking agency) in order to intensify their administrative power over industries and local governments and to perpetuate the interests of elite civil servants by facilitating the migration to post-retirement positions in the private sector. The book explains why the existence of these organizations inhibits the Prime Ministers efforts to implement structural reforms.
