In 1997, the sky fell in Asia. Up until the moment the Thai currency crisis began in May of that year, most pundits could see no end to the "Asian miracle." Now many of those same pundits are predicting a more severe drop while others go so far as to suggest that Asia is entering a "lost decade." The hard truth, suggests Callum Henderson, the Managing Currency Analyst for Asia at Standard & Poor's, is not so dire or dramatic. While Henderson acknowledges that most of the affected countries, particularly Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, have a long way to go in transforming their economic systems, the long term outlook for Asia is good. The conditions that help to make high rates of growth possible--high savings rates, low taxation, good education systems, and high productivity--are still in place. What needs changing are the government policies that focused too heavily on exports as the main engine of economic growth.

Henderson traces how and why the currency crisis happened and finds useful parallels between it and the Mexican crisis that began in late 1994. He also offers specific remedies--such as the creation of a domestic bond market in Asia--and points to compelling opportunities in countries with mature financial systems such as Singapore. This is the first comprehensive look at the Asian financial crisis and should be useful to anyone doing business or investing in Asia. --Harry C. Edwards

This book is well written which makes it a usefull tool to improve my English. The content is OK, but nothing worth it to rave about.(Perhaps, the author need to visit Continent of Asia little more often.)

      2 out of 5 stars 20/20 hindsight.......1999-04-08

This is a good book -- it tells what we already know. Too bad that the author could not predict any of these events -- but then of course hindsight is always 20/20! I do not think this book helps one to do business in Asia. One major drawback - the author seems to have no understanding of Asian business and seems not to have sullied his conclusions by speaking with any Asians. Read this book for a glimpse of perfect hindsight -- but read also "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley for a more fair appraisal of the Asian situation and a terrific understanding of Asian business.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful account for 1997 Asian currency Crisis.......1999-02-09

The Auther explain the underlining historical events ( e.g. the ups and down of dollar Yen exchange rate) that lead to the boom and bust of the Asian economics. He also account for the 1994 Mexico financial crisis in similar manner. Useful for understanding events shaping the world's economics.

As someone who is not an economist, I am in no position to rate Tan's arguments vis-a-vis the positions of other economists. However, as an introduction to the complexities of the 1998 meltdown in Asian economies, this book is first-rate. It is very well organized.

Dealing with the crisis chronologically, and country-by-country, Tan is able to illustrate patterns that span the whole event, and unique events within each country. He treats the responses of each country, and does not shirk from providing a sober and often scathing assessment of the attitudes and policy responses of individual countries. His political analyses are just as useful, since the implications of the event have so much to do with the political makeup of individual countries, and their political and financial institutions.

Market data is used extensively to support his claim. There is a tremendous and often overwhelming plethora of data. However, if one is just looking for an identification of major patterns and analyses, Tan illustrates this very clearly within his chapters.

This book is a great resource for someone who wants access to source data that is relevant to the Asian Meltdown, as well as just a broad introduction to the phenomena that helps a reader trying to understand such a significant event (or series of events).

                Description:
The Currency Board System in Hong Kong and the monitoring band system in Singapore are important benchmarks for two different exchange-rate systems. In this paper we consider the implications of the two exchange-rate systems on the interest-rate behaviour of the two economies. We examine the domestic-US interest differentials under the two exchange-rate regimes during the Asian Financial Crisis as well as the pre-and post-crisis periods. Using a bivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model, we also investigate whether there is any change in the correlation between the domestic and US interest rates due to the Asian Financial Crisis.

                  Description:
This paper provides a quantitative investigation of the East Asian crisis of 1997-1999. We stress two essential features of the crisis. First, the crisis was a regional phenomenon; the depth and severity of the crisis were exacerbated by a large decline in regional demand. Second, the predominance of the US dollar in the pricing of export goods in Asia (which we document empirically) led to a powerful internal propagation effect of the crisis within the region, contributing greatly to the decline in regional trade flows. We construct a multi-country macroeconomic model which contains these two features and show that it can do a good job in accounting for the response of the main macroeconomic aggregates in Korea, Malaysia and Thailand during the crisis. A key advantage of our model is that it can explain the very slow response of exports to the large real exchange rate depreciations that took place during the crisis. Without the regional dimension and dollar pricing of exports, we find that the model fails to account for the depth and severity of the crisis.

We examine the determinants of the currency denomination of debt decision of Australian and New Zealand firms and compare it with that of Asian firms around the 1997 Asian crisis. We control for location choice, and include firm and country specific determinants. We find hedging is the primary determinant of foreign currency borrowing by Australian and New Zealand firms. In Asian firms, however, firm leverage, the exchange rate regime, country political risk, and interest rate differentials determine the currency denomination of debt. With the exception of Hong Kong based firms, there is no support for the hedging hypothesis in Asian firms.

                      Description:
This paper employs a panel of household data from Korea to examine how households coped with the shortfall in consumption during 1994-1998, which encompasses the financial crisis of 1997. We adopt the econometric framework from Glewwe and Hall [Glewwe, P., & Hall, G. (1998). Are some groups more vulnerable to macroeconomic shocks than others? Hypothesis tests based on panel data from Peru.f Journal of Development Economics, 56, 181-206] and estimate a household consumption growth equation. We find that larger households tend to be protected to a greater extent from shortfall in consumption, and that the vulnerability of female-headed households is not greater than that of male-headed households. Among the coping strategies, private transfers act both as an ex-ante risk-managing device and an ex-post coping mechanism. Urban households and those headed by the self-employed experienced a larger shortfall in consumption during the crisis. While credit was used to smooth consumption of children's education, medical and childcare services during the pre-crisis years, it was not utilized as a coping strategy during the 1997 crisis, possibly due to the credit crunch caused by stringent monetary policies. Instead, households cut back consumption of luxurious and durable goods to preserve food consumption and spending on children's education. We do not find evidence of households liquidating their assets to cushion the shortfall in consumption, during the 1997 crisis. It is possible that they did not liquidate their assets because land and stock prices declined significantly.

Only an idiot or a criminal would follow the advice this author gives. His suggestions range from violations of employees' privacy (listening in on their private conversations, searching their personal possessions) to major safety issues (keeping the back door deadbolted so no one can get out). As someone who has been both an employer and an employee, I'm shocked and appalled at his complete lack of consideration for other people.

I don't see how any person with a shred of intelligence or self esteem could stand working for an employer like this. I wonder how he finds time to work on implementing a strategic plan for the business when he spends all day snooping on his employees and micromanaging the cash register.

And in case the author ever has a chance to read this review, here are a couple more clues to the mysteries of life:

                        1. Your female employees are women, not girls.

                        2. Winning the Superbowl is not the greatest possible success in the world.

Told in a funny and very personal style, Mr. New expertly examines the greatest threat to small businesses: employee theft. There's no white-washing here! New looks at employees for what they are -- people ready to steal you blind if you don't take precautions. Anyone running a small business -- no -- anyone running any kind of business should read this! It sure got me thinking

                            Book Description

Time is an essential feature of social and organizational life and part of the deep structure of business activity. Plans, performance, productivity, and pay are all linked to and often measured by time. Yet time is often taken for granted in daily life and the business world. The aim of this book is to bring time into sharper focus and in particular to look at the way time is constructed, made, managed, and used in organizations. The book both provides an overview of some of the key concepts in time -- time's arrow, time's cycle, clock time, etc. -- and it explores how particular features of the modern world -- global time, futures, etc. -- extend and change the temporal dimension of organizational activity. Making Time emphasizes the richness of the temporal relations within organizations and the wealth of competing attempts to order and control time in the act of managing. It describes and explains this temporal complexity as it occurs in management, giving full recognition to the way that people create their own sense of time alongside the official temporal apparatus of the clock and diary. The contributors use a variety of management perspectives -- strategy, organization theory, decision making, industrial relations, and marketing -- and deliberately place the experience of more traditional industrial settings alongside those at the forefront of the 'new economy'. Making Time seeks to spark a debate across the field of management that does justice to the richness of the temporal features of contemporary organizations. The book will be vital reading for those who want to understand the complexities of time in organizations and the modern world, and the challenges it presents for the theoretical and practical spheres of management.

The focus of discussion is on quantitative and, for credits, qualitative methods of portfolio management. These strategies may be employed for portfolio diversification and in order to outperform the benchmark. Methods applicable for different risk factors - duration, yield curve, basis, volatility and credit management - are illustrated in detail using a top-down and bottom-up approach.

This is an excellent book for those in the fixed income asset management world to get to grips with what managing credit risk is all about.

As the market becomes more transparenet and increasingly liquid, more asset managers will need book slike this to provide them the initial knowledge on how to make and manage the right bets in their portfolios.

I look forward to the next release which whould have more quantitative details around the credit markets.

From the supplier: This study illustrates an adaptive Bayesian framework for examining consumers' perceptions of the services of banking institutions in a target market. The approach uses multiple-measures data to estimate the significant determinants of consumers' preferences for competing banks in the market. This is accomplished essentially by incorporating prior structural information into analyses, information that is used to obtain a stabilized version of the observed predictor-criterion covariance matrix. Bayesian structural regression estimates are shown to provide a banking institution with reliable information for use in positioning itself in its financial marketplace. The paper also provides a number of implications for the use of the methodology in practical marketing response applications. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

From the supplier: This paper uses the Fourier flexible form to jointly approximate utility and service flows from durable and nondurable goods. In contrast, parametric functions are usually not flexible enough to accurately approximate nonseparability and often give inconsistent results. This paper calls these inconsistent results the consumer consumption conundrum. I calculate Morishma elasticities of substitution because Blackorby and Russell (1989) show that the Allen-Uzawa measure of substitution is incorrect. Results show that substitution between commodities are variable over time. Therefore, policy intended to affect consumption should take the variability of substitution into account because constant elasticity of substitution functions may give misleading conclusion.
