Book Description

The end of the Cold War, Europe's single currency, Asia's financial crisis, the rise of China, new global trade agreements, massive daily flows of capital-all of these variables and more signal an unprecedented pace of change in the global economy. Globalization has emerged as the hallmark of the 1990s, challenging U.S. investors and corporations to grasp and understand the powerful forces at work outside the United States. This thorough, readable guide presents the 101 key demographic, financial, and economic characteristics of the global economy. It provides a taut introduction for understanding the key trends of the global economy and is essential reading for anyone engaged in international business and finance. It is an excellent sourcebook and reference, incorporating subjects ranging from America's position in global trade and investment to the rise of the global "MTV generation." Conveniently organized into two-page spreads that discuss and then illustrate predominant global trends, 101 Trends Every Investor Should Know About the Global Economy is a much-needed guide to the world economy. Joseph P. Quinlan, a Senior International Economist at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, lectures on international business and global investing at New York University. Kathryn L. Stevens, a graduate of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, is an international economist based in New York. "Interesting and informative . . . essential to success in international business and for individual investors. The authors take what could be cumbersome subject matter and make it stimulating and easy to digest:" -- R. Scott Shively, Vice President, International Marketing Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc. "Provides 20/20 vision on key issues and trends to cut through all the information fog media commentators and economists alike talk about." --Harry Martin, Chief Information Officer Herman Miller, Inc. "A timely, comprehensive, and prescient audit of the global economy. Politicians, business executives, analysts, teachers, and students will appreciate both the facts and the interpretation thereof." -- William E. Dodge, President Marvin & Palmer Associates "We're all involved in the global economy, but few of us can explain its intricate workings. Here finally is the indispensable book for those involved in the worldwide marketplace. In a straightforward, easy-to-read, and understandable style, Quinlan and Stevens clarify complex issues and put a human aspect on economic concepts. A great reference book you'll want to keep handy." -- Sally Heinemann, Editorial Director Bridge News

5 out of 5 stars Global Primer.......2004-08-23

An excellent source of information regarding trading fundamentals in global markets, especially for beginning FOREX traders. The information provided in the text enables the reader to grasp the main subjects of investment and world trade in a simplified manner. The only short coming is that the information regarding global economic statistics is dated to pre-1997 and it would be great if the authors provided an updated edition

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Accurate, and Meaningful.......2000-06-10

This book will open your mind to various aspects of the global economy. Any serious investor would be doing him/herself a great favor by picking up this book...it is written in a very organized manner wherein coverage of each topic is short, concise, and each has it's own accompanying graphs/charts/statistics page. A perfect reference.

Brian Quinlan, son of Joeseph P. Quinlan, is a funny boy who gives interesting speeches and has the best basement and television set in the world. We like to call him TW for terrific warrior. He is a big fan of Doug Flutie and Zack Debolt and you should beware of the "elbow".

The Export Institute deals with brand new to highly experienced international traders. Many of them already know that the old adage "follow the money" is especially true in foreign commerce. Smart exporters are continually monitoring the activities of global investors and financial institutions.

I am very happy with the purchase transaction. Delivery was speedy and as ordered. The book is easy to read and being used for a college course. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction to health care economics........1999-06-21

I wrote a paper on managed care competition for an economics course. This book proved invaluable. Without any previous knowledge of health economics, I was able to read, learn, and understand a fairly complex subject in a short amount of time using this book. The text covers everything but remains at an undergrad level. The arguments and examples are simple, clear, interesting, and easy to remember. I definitely found this to be the best introduction and overview to health economics, after having read six or seven books on the subject.

      Book Description

Employing a practical, hands-on approach, Linux in Small Business: A Practical User's Guide author John Lathrop guides the reader through a multitude of scenarios commonplace in a real-world corporate environment. Eschewing evangelism, Lathrop instead presents real Linux solutions that reduce software purchases, enhance stability, and lower the costs of maintenance and hardware upgrades. Precursory material includes instruction regarding the installation, configuration, and basic operation of Red Hat 7.2, the latest version of the leading Linux distribution. Readers are then guided through a series of practical lessons covering networking (particularly in a heterogeneous Linux/Windows environment), databases, the use of popular office products such as StarOffice, and basic system administration. Tackling many of these issues from the perspective of a native Windows user, newcomers to Linux will have no problem following the lessons.

Lathrop also shows how Linux can be integrated in a mixed Linux/Windows environment, which results in saving money and avoiding workplace disruption due to otherwise unwieldy platform migrations. Linux has now matured to the point where, with modest instruction and familiar GUI tools, a Windows user or administrator can install, set up, and use Linux effectively in a business, workgroup, school, or government office.

Linux in Small Business: A Practical User's Guide covers more material than most Linux books; the scenario-based LAN section alone covers DHCP, DNS, NAT, Samba, NFS, Sendmail, Apache, and PostgreSQL. Readers will find the coupling of this breadth of information with the goal-oriented presentational approach employed by Lathrop to be a refreshing and methodical strategy for quickly implementing a Linux-based solution.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Linux.......2004-10-07

John Lathrop did an outstanding job with providing a path for the typical Windows user to step into the world of Linux. This book covers a broad spectrum of Linux deployment, from a clerical workstation to a mail, web, file, database and print server.

What I found truly enjoyable about this book is the way the author gave sufficient directions on setting up Linux in various roles without going into excruciating detail on any one topic. Throughout this process, he also related these configurations to real-world scenarios.

In addition to basic Linux installation and administration, the author introduced several freely available software applications that would make anyone burdened with the cost of Microsoft operating systems and applications give Linux some serious consideration. I was really surprised at how much Linux has developed into a user-friendly platform, capable of filling many of the roles I previously thought could only be done practically in a Windows environment.

If you have any curiosity about Linux, this book is an excellent first step into exploring what open source operating systems and software can do for you.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2003-03-11

I am totally impressed with this book. It has enough (but not too much) information to set up a desktop or network and is very lucid and well written. In addition, the examples are specific and realistic. For a computer book, that is almost unheard of. I strongly recommend this book to people who are familiar with Windows but want to get started in Linux.

5 out of 5 stars Chapters on setting up a small LAN are great.......2003-01-04

I'm an IT professional working predominately with Microsoft products- but I've always played around with my Linux & Mac machines. If you're tech-savvy (but not a Linux guru) & want to set up a heterogenous LAN centered on a RedHat server, then this book is invaluable. A+ to the author for keeping all the code on the companion site up to date as well. Haven't really read many of the other chapters but they look like a solid general intro into the RedHat world. Nice job

3 out of 5 stars A simple guide to Employee Assistance Programs.......2007-01-29

If you're looking at putting in place a workplace program to help your employees this guide is pretty useful. It helps you put together a set of programs to deal with the main workplace stressors such as diet, exercise, heart health and more.

It gives you guidelines for screening employees and setting in place programs to manage problems such as alcohol and drug dependence, poor nutrition, and stress related programs.

It is a short book consisting of checklists, ideas and resources for setting up your Employee Assistance Program. If you're looking for an overview to set you off in the right direction and need only some stimulation and ideas to get going this is a great handbook. If you want everything spelt out with sample programs then this book won't have the detail that you seek.

Instead it provides a checklist of ideas to tell you what you should consider when setting up workplace programs. There are some good health promotion ideas but not enough detail for someone who is looking for templates to implement immediately.

The founder of the visionary, yet doomed, GO Corporation kept notes throughout his years at the helm, thinking that one day he would produce a book. It shows. This is a vivid and lively rise-and-fall account of a company born to create a pen-based computer. It begins on a corporate jet with the author and fellow industry visionary Mitchell Kapor, founder of Lotus, sharing a vision of pen computing. From there, Startup quickly leaps to the day-to-day challenges of hiring staff, constantly reassessing and readjusting goals, and coping with the stress of endless rounds of venture capital funding. That Kaplan, in his first attempt at running a company, battles with the top forces at Microsoft, IBM, and other industry giants to bring the idea to market, only makes the story more compelling. His company's ultimate failure says more about a cutthroat industry than about the quality of Kaplan's product. This is a real David and Goliath tale. If you've ever wondered why things go right or wrong, how competition can kill you, or how financing really works within a small startup, read this book!

        Book Description

Jerry Kaplan had a dream: he would redefine the known universe (and get very rich) by creating a new kind of computer. All he needed was sixty million dollars, a few hundred employees, a maniacal belief in his ability to win the Silicon Valley startup game. Kaplan, a well-known figure in the computer industry, founded GO Corporation in 1987, and for several years it was one of the hottest new ventures in the Valley. Startup tells the story of Kaplan's wild ride: how he assembled a brilliant but fractious team of engineers, software designers, and investors; pioneered the emerging market for hand-held computers operated with a pen instead of a keyboard; and careened from crisis to crisis without ever losing his passion for his revolutionary idea. Along the way, Kaplan vividly recreates his encounters with eccentric employees, risk-addicted venture capitalists, and industry giants such as Bill Gates and John Sculley. And no one -- including Kaplan himself -- is spared his sharp wit and o

5 out of 5 stars An adventure in school of hard knocks.......2007-10-20

This is a great story told from someone who lived in the trenches, soared with the eagles and then fell to earth. A true tale of the ups and downs of an entrepreneur. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. Interestingly it is all pre-bubble which makes it even more spectacular. Any entrepreneur will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible overview / warning of the startup process.......2007-04-08

This is the most intense book that I think I have ever read. A real life story of doing everything you can while experiencing the pain and agony of getting squashed by forces much stronger than you.

If you want to understand how hard life can or needs to be in order to overcome it, if you want to understand what competition is really about, the READ THIS BOOK.

        1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-03-07

What a tedious, pedantic read. After Kaplan spent three pages telling us how he had to scramble at the airport lest he be late for a flight (including such riveting passages as his secretary calling around and even sample dialogue at the ticket counter), I threw this book in the trash.

Kaplan is apparently utterly incapable of STICKING TO THE STORY. There are diversions about his cat's death, about where to eat in San Francisco, about where to park at the airport, about what he studied in school, etc. Who cares!? This is nominally a tale of a pre-dot-com-era startup, not Jerry Kaplan's memoirs.

If I wanted to read a very granular biography of Jerry Kaplan's life with moment-by-moment details of his lunch choices, I'd read...well, I guess I'd read Startup, because that's what this book is.

So many better books in this category. I was going to say "if you paid more than 99 cents for this book, you got ripped off," but the reality is that unless YOU were PAID to read this book, and paid well, you have wasted a portion of your life pointlessly.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete View at Starting Up.......2006-01-20

I read Kaplan's book over 3 years ago, and still consider it the best book on entrepreneurship that I have ever encountered.

Having met a lot of entrepreneurs, I find their experiences to be mostly incommunicable. Sure, they can dispense advice a la bulleted PowerPoint slides and Top 10 Lists, but the meat of the wisdom never quite make it out of their head into mine. This is where "Startup" the book excels. Because Jerry was so meticulous in recording every bit of his startup adventure (for he had intended to record GO's life in writing nearly from the very beginning), his book alone has an incredible amount of valuable detail that is lacking in other such startup "memoirs." Startup is so well-done as a "memoir" type, in leaving nothing out, that I felt like I was living through the experience along with Jerry. What is it like to operate a company with real employees, who have real personalities, real disagreements, real visions and real limitations? What is it like to have to put the rest of your life on hold to pursue your passion and what does it do to you and those around you mentally, physically? Jerry won't tell you these things, but he will show you. Because Jerry's story is real, these conflicts fold so naturally and almost imperceptibly, but often devastatingly -- just like in real life. Jerry's detractors say that he made some terrible decisions -- and maybe he did, but the only reason you know that is because he lets it be known. He really bares all in this book and I didn't feel like there was a single moment when he was trying to pull something over the reader's head. Of course, there are times when I don't necessarily agree with his conclusions, but that's a result of differences in our characters, and not because he tried to extricate himself from his responsibilities.

In addition to the realism and detail of the "adventure," startup-lovers will be pleased to know that the technicalities of the fundraising, marketing, and selling/negotiating processes (particularly with the Evil Empire, aka Microsoft, whose self-aggrandizement really knows no bounds!) are also revealed. As are the presence of and Jerry's interactions with Silicon Valley legends John Doerr and Bill Campbell. Reading "Startup" was like sitting next to these people in a bar -- Jerry's handsome writing, full of humor, really brought them to life.

I also was lucky enough to meet Jerry and have him sign my copies of the book at a Silicon Valley VC event where he was speaking. I now have two copies of the book -- one that I have at home, and one that is constantly roaming in my circle of friends and acquaintances, because I really believe that this is one of those books that should be required reading for all startup enthusiasts.

        5 out of 5 stars Must read........2005-11-29

I read this book over the thanksgiving weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book shows what it takes to be passionate about technology. Startups are not for making quick money, but to solve the real-world problems, fast. There are some very important lessons to be learnt from GO/EO and I think Jerry has done a terrific job at being honest and telling it like a story and not a chronicle of events. I discovered some very talented people through this book (E.g. Mr. Kapor, Campbell) who are an inspiration. There are many parts of the story that one will not forget. For me there were two:
        1. Death of Jerry's cat. My heart really pained after reading it.
        2. Jerry willing to bring on Campbell as the CEO. This showed that he was not part of GO so that he could be the CEO. I think this is a very important quality one must have.

        Again, a great read.
