Book Description

'Muller's great accomplishment in this book is to present a clear, thoughtful, and engaging overview of Adam Smith's thought. He reveals Smith to be a wide-ranging and innovative thinker who formulated a comprehensive social science.' - Peter McNamara, The Review of Politics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant primer on the thought of Adam Smith.......2003-06-01

I couldn't disagree more with the review of Max Hayes. It would and does shock people to learn that Adam Smith wasn't primarily an economist as we think of the term. The fact that his work was centered around moral philosophy and making people "decent" is widely unknown and most people have never even heard of The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Robert Heilbroner said it best when he called Smith "the most quoted and least read of the worldly philophers."

This book is not a biography of Smith, which would probably be pretty boring. It is an examination of his ideas. Muller starts by placing the book in its intellectual context of earlier traditions. Than he turns to an examination of Smith's work as a whole. This is important because to often Smith is limited to The Wealth of Nations, which is only one element of his thought. Muller examines The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Lectures on Jurisprudence to form a more complete picture of Smith as a moral philisopher.

The most important element of this book is the demonstration that Smith was not a defender of unrestrained greed. Smith sought to defend and construct institutions that would channel individual self-interest into benefical results for the whole of society. Nor was he an enemy of government. While it is true that he thought government often proved a danger to the market because of the influence of what we call special interests, Smith did not reject government regulation totally. In fact he argued for regulation of banking and interest rates and advocated using the government to try and correct the negative effects capitalism had on the intellect of the people through public financed education.

Muller writes a compelling book demonstrating that Smith is not the proto-libertarian so many people claim. That in fact Smith would probably be quite dismayed at the uses to which his thoughts have been applied.

1 out of 5 stars Another Book on Smith.......2002-08-22

This book is an uninspiring analysis of Smith's work. Nobody who has even a cursory knowledge of Smith's writings would be surprised by what Muller has to say. The basic point that Smith was not a philosopher of unbridled greed is unsurprising. It is not that the thesis of the book is wrong, but it is simply something that could have been said in an article or less. Obviously a lot of hard work went into the book, but it is the product of a mediocre mind.

4 out of 5 stars a very informative book.......1999-10-27

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent introduction to Adam Smith's ideas........1998-08-24

I am sure that anyone interested in the history of ideas will enjoy reading this book for its clear exposition of Smith's ideas and their relevance to today's economic, social, and political issues. Muller has a scholar's mastery of Smith's writings as well as a broad knowledge of their intellectual antecedents. The style is jargon-free.

                  Book Description

As we approach the end of the twentieth century, the ways in which knowledge--scientific, social, and cultural--is produced are undergoing fundamental changes. In The New Production of Knowledge, a distinguished group of authors analyze these changes as marking the transition from established institutions, disciplines, practices, and policies to a new mode of knowledge production. Identifying such elements as reflexivity, transdisciplinarity, and heterogeneity within this new mode, the authors consider their impact and interplay with the role of knowledge in social relations. While the knowledge produced by research and development in science and technology is accorded central focus, the authors also outline the changing dimensions of social scientific and humanities knowledge and the relations between the production of knowledge and its dissemination through education. Placing science policy and scientific knowledge within the broader context of contemporary society, this book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the changing nature of knowledge, with the social study of science, with educational systems, and with the correlation between research and development and social, economic, and technological development. "Thought-provoking in its identification of issues that are global in scope; for policy makers in higher education, government, or the commercial sector." --Choice "By their insightful identification of the recent social transformation of knowledge production, the authors have been able to assert new imperatives for policy institutions. The lessons of the book are deep." --Alexis Jacquemin, Universite Catholique de Louvain and Advisor, Foreign Studies Unit, European Commission "Should we celebrate the emergence of a 'post-academic' mode of postmodern knowledge production of the post-industrial society of the 21st Century? Or should we turn away from it with increasing fear and loathing as we also uncover its contradictions. A generation of enthusiasts and/or critics will be indebted to the team of authors for exposing so forcefully the intimate connections between all the cognitive, educational, organizational, and commercial changes that are together revolutionizing the sciences, the technologies, and the humanities. This book will surely spark off a vigorous and fruitful debate about the meaning and purpose of knowledge in our culture." --Professor John Ziman, (Wendy, Janey at Ltd. is going to provide affiliation. Contact if you don't hear from her.) "Jointly authored by a team of distinguished scholars spanning a number of disciplines, The New Production of Knowledge maps the changes in the mode of knowledge production and the global impact of such transformations. . . . The authors succeed . . . at sketching out, in very large strokes, the emerging trends in knowledge production and their implications for future society. The macro focus of the book is a welcome change from the micro obsession of most sociologists of science, who have pretty much deconstructed institutions and even scientific knowledge out of existence." --Contemporary Sociology "This book is a timely contribution to current discussion on the breakdown of and need to renegotiate the social contract between science and society that Vannevar Bush and likeminded architects of science policy constructed immediately after World War II. It goes far beyond the usual scattering of fragmentary insights into changing institutional landscapes, cognitive structures, or quality control mechanisms of present day science, and their linkages with society at large. Tapping a wide variety of sources, the authors provide a coherent picture of important new characteristics that, taken altogether, fundamentally challenge our traditional notions of what academic research is all about. This well-founded analysis of the social redistribution of knowledge and its associated power patterns helps articulate what otherwise tends to remain an--albeit widespread--intuition. Unless they adapt to the new situation, universities in the future will find the centers of gravity of knowledge production moving even further beyond their ken. Knowledge of the social and cognitive dynamics of science in research is much needed as a basis of science and technology policymaking. The New Production of Knowledge does a lot to fill this gap. Another unique feature is its discussion of the humanities, which are usually left out in works coming out of the social studies of science." --Aant Elzinga, University od Goteborg

In current market situation when everything looks grim for startup (no more fabulous IPOs and instant billionaires) it is nice to find a book that tells you how should the whole process be done.
So, let's start with new business. What will it be, a consulting business, your own software company or are you keen of dealing with real estate. You choose and adventure begins. Soon you have to decide if you're going to expand your business or not, or what kind of customers are you going to chase. And sooner then you know you earned your first million or you have to close down.
The book is divided into charters that describe your story and at the end of each you make your mind and go to appropriate chapter. Here you learn the consequences of your decision.
Sound interactive and maybe a book is not quite appropriate format for this kind of game, we may call it that.
Still I hope you will be better businessperson than I was. I must admit my decisions weren't very successful. More often then not I had to take a step back and choose another route.

I purchased "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook" along with other books written for people who have (or will soon have) law degrees, but are not sure they want to practice law. This book has been an invaluable tool in helping me realize where I want to go with my life. What I like most about it is that it includes exercises to make its readers think critically about their own skills, interests, and requirements in the workplace. I find that the book is very practical, and although I am just begining my job search, it has been helpful as a tool to prioritize what I'm looking for in an employer.

When considering whether to purchase this book, I read some highly critical reviews, but bought the book anyway. If you are serious about looking for a job which is more suited to you, I would encourage you to buy it too - and read it with a pencil and pad of paper close at hand.

For those of you who, like me, are very frustrated with law - whether you are already practicing or not, I want to share this passage, which summed up everything I feel about my experiences in the field of law. On page 12, Hindi Greenberg writes:

"One of my clients recently wrote a stinging evaluation of law practice, listing the things he dislikes. In his words: 'I disilke (1) the interpersonal nastiness of litigation, (2) the combatitiveness of litigation, (3) the win-at-all-cost attitude of litigation, (4) the crisis mentality of litigation, (5) that my goal is to defeat my opponent and my opponent's goal is to defeat me, (6) the pressure of being expected to do work that my oponent can never criticize - an absolutely unrealistic expectation, (7) that I am always around people who are angry at someone, (8) that I cannot be fair or reasonable, as I see fairness and reason, but have to fight for every advantage I can get out of a situation, (9) that I cannot spend my life working with a group of dedicated people to achieve a common goal but instead must constantly fight other people to achieve success.'"

Particularly with respect to number 7, this has been my experience over two summers of clerking for law firms.

The afternoon before I began reading this book, I went out for coffee with a fellow law student. I tried to explain to her all of the reasons that I am uninterested in a career as a lawyer - but no matter what I said, she was adamant that I will be able to find a fulfilling legal career, telling me, "not all law firms are like the ones you have worked for. There are plenty of areas of law where you never have to fight at all. There are better lawyers to work for. There are better areas of law to practice in." This book made me realize that I'm not being subborn or overly emotional, or closed-minded about career options. I am grateful to Hindi Greenberg for showing me that I am not alone, and that, frankly, there is nothing wrong with me for not wanting to spend the next 30 or 40 years of my life fighting for a living, or trying to do perfect work which can never be criticized.

In addition to giving me much-needed affirmation that I am not being an idiot, because being a lawyer is not for everyone, this book provides many practical tools for developing a job search, and for finding a career which suits my personality.

Another great resource in this book is the resume writing guide. As a first year law student, Career Services held a (mandatory) resume-writing workshop, teaching us how to make legal resumes - which are vastly different from non-legal resumes. On the brink of looking for a non-legal job, I found myself perplexed as to what a non-legal resume was supposed to look like. This book has examples of functional resumes versus legal resumes, as well as interviewing tips which I found to be infinetly more helpful than the tips provided by Career Services over the past few years.

I was very happy with this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is unhappy with his or her legal career, and definetly to law students who find themselves wondering whether there might be more worthwhile careers out there.

                          1 out of 5 stars Repetitive Rehash.......2003-09-03

This is a book like the dozens of other career change ones out there - you can find this information in publications from years ago, and with much better advice. No new information, and would only help lawyers who would lack the imagination to think of "legal publishing" or "in-house counsel" as career options. Truly unhelpul.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource That WIll Make You Think.......2003-06-21

When I picked up this book I knew that I had always had an interest in law, but was unsure if I wanted to work for a law firm. Before going to law school I wanted an idea of exactly what my options might be after school.

This book helped me a lot. I have not made a final decision, but I am definitely closer than when I picked up the book. The two most helpful sections to me were the assessment exercises that helped me think about what skills I have and the last 2 sections on actual jobs available.

If you just want someone to tell you what job is right for you then don't choose this book. If you want/need to think about yourself, your life, your skills, and what you want your job and your life to be then this book is a tool that will help you on your journey.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Great Information.......2003-06-13

As a psychologist who works with lawyers, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for my clients. It addresses the full range of issues that confront someone questioning whether to leave a legal career altogether or to switch to a different legal environment. No book should give clients the "answer" to their dilemma, and this one does not pretend to. I have found it extremely helpful in how it poses important questions to consider, offers wise advice, and provides in-depth help with resources and information. My clients have found it reassuring, encouraging and informative. It's an inexpensive resource that every lawyer or law student considering a shift in career direction should review.

5 out of 5 stars This book can be a LIFECHANGER!.......2003-05-07

I read ýThe Lawyerýs Career Change Handbook,ý and found Ms. Greenbergýs ideas and advice extremely useful. I found the self-assessment exercises, which most of us lawyers try to avoid, extremely helpful in clarifying why my previous work was unsatisfying and in what direction I needed to move in order to find work that would better fit my needs. The job ideas, extensive resource listings, and insightful comments by Ms. Greenberg also greatly benefited me in deciding upon my next career incarnation. The final assist was when I consulted individually with Ms. Greenberg. She gave me creative guidance, solid advice and wonderful support to pursue my current work. ... She is an insightful, generous human being.

College students are usually strapped for time, and a lot of their time is spent reading textbooks. Because they don't have a lot of extra time to read, Trent & Seppy's college guides are perfect! Besides listing very helpful tips and advice, their guides are written so the reader can open the book to any page and receive some informative advice.

The book, "Broke! A College Student's Guide to Getting by on Less," includes advice from college students who have already experienced or who are currently experiencing college life. This book gives ideas on how to save money, how to make the most of the money you do have, and how college students can keep from going broke.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- college students are sure to find great advice on getting through their college years without spending every penny they have.

They say when you want to know something there is no better teacher than experience. While not always true, that philosophy is the foundation of "Broke! A College Student's Guide to Getting By on Less". The book consists primarily of quotes from college students who share their experience and advice. For each subject there are multiple student quotes that are selected for their applicability to that subject, some real advice on how to handle various situations, and even selected resources. You have to appreciate the fact that the book covers so many critical areas a college student needs to understand but does it in such a way that they are likely to actually take the advice instead of ignoring it because it came from a parent. Some of the important areas include budgeting, prioritizing, banking, credit cards, scholarships, loans, purchasing textbooks, dining, entertainment, travel, and housing. Although it professes to be a guide for college students trying to get by on less the book is really a valuable tool for anyone making that difficult transition from living at home to being out on their own for the first time. "Broke! A College Student's Guide to Getting By on Less" is a recommended read and a recommended gift for anyone making that transition.

As this reviewer read the latest tome of wisdom collected by the Trent and Seppy team (not Ren & Stempy), I had three thoughts. First why I couldn't they go back in time and do this when moi was a freshman. Second Rodney Dangerfield's Commencement Address in back to School paraphrasing that it's a jungle out there - let your parents pay for it. Finally where is the advice for aging boomers eking out a living who do not want to write self help advice books.

As usual the dynamic duo obtains plenty of insight from those actually living the college life of always being broke. The primer is amusing, but also seriously provides money management 101 and 102 on topics such as budget, expenses, discounts, legal cash making schemes, and poverty (better known as living on either scholarship or your parent's economy). Fabulous and insightful as usual well worth the price for the student, but perhaps even more for us parents. Now to get that that junior consumer in my household to follow the expert advice compiled by Trent and Seppy.

Simply put, a fantastic historical business book outlining the history of the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads, the bohemoth merger, and ultimate demise. Each chapter was crafted in a way to allow the reader to easily grasp the brick wall that the Penn Central was headed towards. The author presents a myriad of facts/figures, allowing the reader to draw his/her own conclusion.

If you enjoy learning about potential pitfalls which could threaten your business, there is little that the PC railroad did not face following its merger. I typically like to learn the mistakes of others and there are plenty of lessons to be had in this book (corporate communications, governance, high finance, strategy and the so on).

BTW -- after reading the book my conclusion is that the company lacked leadership, a strong strategy, a competitive product, and was handcuffed by needless government agencies and regulations. Further, if there was true leadership coming from the railroad, and if the government was at all interested in "leveling the playing field" in comparison to the airline and trucking industry subsidies, this country would still have an extensive and viable freight railroad system. Just my two cents.

The author makes this interesting chapter in railroad history even more interesting. After I read this book I looked for more on this subject. This book is still one of the best if not the best on the Penn Central.

                              4 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2002-12-03

The Penn Central was the failed attempt at combining the storied Pennsylvania Railroad and the historic New York Central Railroad -- both major lines in the Northeast United States -- during a period of time in which all railroads were suffering under strict and burdensome government regulation and the obligation to carry passenger traffic. The wreck of the Penn Central led to Conrail, Amtrak, and, in many ways, the railroad industry we have today. This book is an insightful, on the ground view of the creation and destruction of the company. Very readable for railroad historian, business historian, or simply by one who enjoys a good read.
